Quick & Dirty: Dragon King has it all from a steamy romance, wonderful writing, action scenes to an amazing cast of characters.

Opening Sentence: Grace was screwed.

The Review:

Dragon King is an absolutely sexy read. The characters are entertaining and the writing sucked me in to the story. I really felt like I was in the highlands of Scotland sitting on the side of the mountain with Grace. I really liked this setting and the dragon’s story. I just want to stop everything and read the rest of this series. I thought this novella was that good. I have never read anything in this series yet but I will. I think this could be read as a standalone because the world is set up and explained in such a way that I didn’t feel like was missing out on anything.

Grace is desperate to finish her novel. She has been fighting terrible writer’s block. She does the last thing she can think of and that is to travel to Scotland, the place where her book takes place. She is hoping the atmosphere will help her write. She drives to a location that she thinks is perfect for writing and write she does. It was the perfect option for her troubles.

Grace suffers from a weird phobia. She is scared of storms. She is a little worried when she sets out because of the rain but she faces her fear because writing is the number one thing she needs to focus on. As the rain picks up she seeks refuge in a cave as she continuously writes.

Arian has just woken up from his dragon sleep. He can sense that his cave has been invaded. He is intrigued by the woman who is sitting at the entrance to his cave. She shouldn’t have been able to see it but he is enraptured by what she is doing. He thinks she is a wonderful storyteller but he needs to find out how she got to his cave. Arian’s cave comes under attack by Dark Fae and he must decide whether Grace knows anything about it.

As a novella, the sparks fly pretty fast between Grace and Arian. Once she is aware of Arian she isn’t scared of him. I do think she is a little insane because he is naked when they first meet and she doesn’t really think anything too crazy (at least she doesn’t dwell on it).

Arian is a dragon who can magically transform into a human shape. He is drool worthy. Arian follows his intuition when it comes to Grace. He is a little selfish and doesn’t want Grace to leave him so he uses his power to control weather to keep her in his cave. For the most part, Grace is levelheaded. She isn’t freaking out too much about the things she is finding out about Arian and the world that he is from.

Dragon King has it all from a steamy romance, wonderful writing, action scenes to an amazing cast of characters. I really enjoyed this novella and I’m already hooked onto the character of Constantine. I really want to know what is going on with the leader of the Dragon Kings. If you like dragons and want to read a series that is well written. I would check out this novella and see if it hooks you like it did me.

Notable Scene:

“You’re quiet,” Grace said.

Arian found himself smiling. He noticed that he had been lightly rubbing her back the entire time. “So are you, lass.”

“I’m thinking.”

“About?” he urged.

She snuggled closer to him. “Don’t laugh.”

“I would never,” he responded solemnly because he had a feeling whatever she was about to say was about them.

Grace flattened her palm on his chest. “I’ve not been writing it correctly.”

“Writing what, exactly?”

“Passion. I forgot what it was,” she whispered. “I went off what I saw in movies or read, but I haven’t…experience…it in many years.”

He didn’t like thinking about other men being with her, but they were in the past. Where they would remain. “Were they no’ good lovers?”

“They were all right, but without passion, it all feels…empty.”

FTC Advisory: Evil Eye Concepts, Inc/InkslingerPR provided me with a copy of The Dragon King. No goody bags, sponsorships, “material connections,” or bribes were exchanged for my review.

There are a few books before this novella and I might have missed some important facts that occur in those previous books, but if I just look at the evolution between Grace and Arian, they weren't needed, but I felt like this big battle might need even more clarification so I might just have to start on those books lol

Grace is a write in need of inspiration and while searching for her place to write, she finds a cave that calls to her unaware that Arian, a Dragon King, to whom it belong just woke up from centuries of sleep. While danger is lurking around his cave, Arian keeps Grace with him to find out if she is an enemy or if she is truly an innoncent. While the attraction between them grows, Arian must find out first if he can trust her because a war is going on and every lapse of judgement could be dangerous.

Overall, it was a good story, but like I said before, I feel like I might need to read the previous books just to make sure I understand everything about the war and the background story to all of this.

Dragon King was so freaking good but mainly interesting af. Were-dragons?? Who knew that was a thing. In it, you will meet Grace and Arian. Things were okay between them but I honestly felt like everything was being rushed. It could just be me because it is a pretty short novella and all but I would've liked for things to go a bit slower. Other than that, I did like the little twists it gave me but not a lot happened.

Anyone who has been keeping up with Donna Grant’s Dragon Kings knows how Con feels about his Dragon’s finding human mates. He would do anything to keep it from happening. As it is he tries very hard to prevent them and he continually fails in this endeavor. Now imagine his reaction to a freshly woken Dragon finding his true forever love as soon as he wakes from his Dragon Sleep. Arian is so newly awoken that he has not ventured from his cave or found clothing to cover his very sexily naked body. That’s exactly what happens with Arian and Grace (insert maniacal chuckle) and Con is King Pissy over it.

Grace is in a bind. Her publisher is pressuring her to turn in her next book in a few weeks. It’s already way past due. She has ran off to Scotland to find her missing muse. All Grace wants to do is find the perfect quiet spot to write her book, muse permitting. As luck would have it she finds that spot but soon discovers that a cranky man who doesn’t want her anywhere near his cave is already there.

Having slept for the past six hundred years Arian is behind on some things but thanks to Constantine keeping him up on most current events he knows that the Dragon Kings are once again at war. Arian also knows not to trust anyone because enemies are at every turn. Now Arian is left to discover if the beauty with the laptop is a spy sent by their enemies or if she truly is as she says, just looking for a peaceful place.

This installment of the Dark King series could easily work as a stand-alone. There are not any advancements made in the events that have been occurring in the full length novels. There were not any major revelations made that concern the conflicts that the Dragon Kings have been facing.

Donna's Dragon Kings' stories are always entertaining with great characters, well-paced action and scorching passion.

"You may no' believe it, lass, but you're safe with me."
Grace scratched her nose. "With a dragon?"
"Aye."
"You were a dragon," she said. "A huge dragon with wings and fire and everything."
He gave a nod. "I ken exactly what I am, lass."

DRAGON KING: A DARK NIGHTS NOVELLA by Donna Grant is a fascinating addition to Donna's Dragon Kings series. I absolutely love Donna's sexy Scottish Dragon Kings! I can never seem to get enough of Highlanders nor of dragons - and this series combines both! Donna's stories can always be counted on to contain lots of exciting action and hot swoon worthy passion.

This novella features Arian, a dragon king who has been asleep for six centuries. Con, the king of kings, has been wakening all the dragons as there is a war on the horizon. Arian is not happy about having to wake up and even unhappier to find that his cave has an uninvited visitor. So he has a conundrum: Is she a spy or is she truly a writer - as she claims to be - just seeking a peaceful place from which to write?

Our heroine is Grace Clark who is fighting a bad case of writer's block as the story opens. She's facing a tight deadline and her publisher is pressing her to produce, but the words just won't come. She has traveled to Scotland hoping that the change of scenery will allow her creative juices to flow. After arriving, she had searched for peace and quiet in the majestic Scotland countryside from which to write when a storm suddenly set upon her. She's deathly afraid of storms and sought safe refuge in a nearby cozy cave which is where Arian found her.

I easily connected to both Arian and Grace. It's funny that Donna would pair a woman afraid of storms with a dragon king who controls the weather - but, in hindsight, that was a brilliant move on the author's part. I liked that the change of scenery has indeed allowed the words to again flow for Grace. If you have been reading the series, you know that Con is not happy about his fellow dragon kings finding their mates. Therefore, you can safely infer that he's not thrilled about Arian finding his true love so quickly upon wakening.

DRAGON KING is a 1001 Dark Nights release. Dark Nights are a collection of novellas that are advertised to be breathtakingly sexy and magically romantic. Some are paranormal; Some are erotic. Each one is compelling and page-turning. They are all meant to work well as standalones and they can also serve as introductions to a series or as a way to sample a new author's work. DRAGON KING certainly fits the bill in the paranormal category. Fans may be slightly disappointed that there are no major advancements towards resolving the conflicts that the dragon kings have been facing within this book. However, many favorite characters from the previous books make appearances - so fans of the series will certainly rejoice in that.

Donna's Dragon Kings' stories are always entertaining with great characters, well-paced action and scorching passion. DRAGON KING is no exception. I highly recommend DRAGON KING to anyone who loves paranormal romances!

This is going to be a short and sweet review - just like the story! I haven't read many Dragon based paranormal romances, but if this is what they are like then I am going to have to start digging in more! Grant does a great job making these mythical beasts seem real and approachable, while at the same time making them scary and intimidating.

Even though I am not a writer, I could almost instantly relate to Grace (minus the fear of storms, I LOVE them). She was quirky and independent, but trying to force things to happen when she should take a breath and RELAX. Enter Arian - while of course adding undue stress at the same time helps her to just let go and BE. I think we all could use a little bit of that in our lives.

Being a 1001 Dark nights novella, Dragon King has a fully fleshed out story in an existing world - the Dark Kings Series - but you don't need to be familiar with the series so far to dive right in. Of course we meet a few characters who I am sure we would know better had we read the series up until this point, but it certainly takes nothing away from the story. And you can believe that I will be playing catch up with this series with my next book budget!

The idea behind this story was interesting: were-dragons used to be in abundance and now they have to hide, etc. But the writing was pretty bad and the plot wasn't much better. The narration was very much telling instead of showing and the dialogue didn't feel natural. The plot itself felt very rushed, although that's probably the fault of this novella format forced upon the story by this multi-author series. I won't be in a hurry to read anything else by Grant, although I would be more willing to read another novella in this series by a different author since the novella format can sometimes work really well.

Grace has traveled to Scotland to trying to overcome her writer's block. She finds the perfect place to write but stumbles across the secrets of Dreagan. Arian has been asleep for six centuries but knows instantly that there is more to his attraction to Grace than just lust.

Their relationship is quick and filled with trials they have to work through. I liked both Grace and Arian. I hope we see more of them in the future.

"Dragon King" is a short-novel by Donna Grant, from 1,001 Dark Knights, a series with the stories of several authors and different genres which "reinterpret" Sheherazade in "One thousand and one nights" with new novels.
I love reading them, because it seems to be in a little fairy tale dimension, although adult fairy tales in this case.
"Dragon King" also is part of the paranormal romance series "Dark Kings" (# 6.25).
The story of Arian and Grace has for me all the charm of Dark Kings series and its shapeshifting dragons, a very ancient and powerful race, nearly invincible, because of their magic; their lives changed a lot when humans appeared on Earth.
Despite being a short story, the author has managed putative us the salient facts of the Dragon Kings's past, the conflicts and struggles that divided them. For this reason the book could be read as standalone, though certainly some nuances about secondary characters maybe lose a little bit.
I love the Dragon Kings, I love their reality, so full of magic and I'm intrigued from their memories, a past when their dragons flyied in the sky freely, I like to imagine them as well.

They're creatures with extraordinary powers, proud fighters and despite everything they protect human people who are unaware of the dangers and of the existence of supernatural creatures. What I prefer the most in them is the depth of their feelings when they find their mate, they're are literally overwhelmed by the intensity of what they feel and everything for them is questioned, also the orders they receive from the King of Kings,Con.
Arian also is no different, once he's sure Grace isn't a threat for his brethen, he lets go and enjoying her presence in his cave, even if he has to deal with his need to protect her and the duties to his race.

Grace is very funny, she always speaks her mind and she's totally focused on her mission to go ahead and write her book, but Arian is too much, to remain indifferent. When she discovers his dragon nature for her it's a real wonder, because of her open mind full of imagination.
Everything happens quickly between them, thanks to the storms , and the unusual beauty of Arian's mountain, and the attraction between them it's impossible to resist.
It was fun to see how Con as usual is annoyed when the other Dragon Kings find their mates among humans. He always try to do everything to put a spoke in the wheels, and his choices and behavior, always remain a mystery to me. I never understand what is running in his head, but it's worth seeing as the Dragon Kings fights him and how he must swallow the toad.
I can't wait to read more stories about the Dragon Kings and see if some mysteries concealed by Donna Grant will be revealed eventually to us.

Grace Clark is a writer looking for a little peace and quiet to meet her next deadline on her new book. Taking a trip to Scotland might just be what she needs to get those creative juices flowing. So when she finds a writing cave – and I literally do mean a cave where she can write in – she soon discovers that the majestic atmosphere is enough to have her fingers flying on her laptop.

Grace is a really sweet character. With her fear of storms, it’s quite funny that she gets paired with a man who can control the weather. This isn’t something that I’ve seen in too many paranormals lately and certainly not in a character who is also a dragon. Putting Grace in Arian’s cave was the best decision Grant could make and I absolutely loved the story that came out of it.

While this is only a novella, all the elements that make up a good Donna Grant book are presence in this one. There’s action, passion and that all important brotherhood that continues to grow with each book. I’m quite impressed by Grant’s ability to continually develop and improve her world with each new installment to the series. Fans of Lara Adrian and Karen Marie Moning would just adore this series!

I’m obsessed with the 1001 Dark Nights series. Each book tells a unique story that adds to the theme. Dragon king by Donna Grant is part of both the 1001 Dark night series but it’s also part of the Dark Kings series.

Grace Clark is way beyond her deadline to finish her book and she hasn’t even begun writing it. Travelling all the way to Scotland is supposed to break her writer’s block. Surrounded by the quietness and the breathtaking view f the Scottish mountains, Grace begin to write until a storm begins. Terrified of thunders, Grace is forced to seek a safe place and ends up entering a cave, Arian’s cave.

Arian is a Dragon King who just woke up from a thousand years old sleep. When he finds Grace in his cave he first assumes that she must be with the enemy but if she’s with them then how did she find his cave? All his questions are answered when Grace discovers she’s not alone in the little pretty cave and the man she’s with isn’t a normal human.

Dragon king was incredible. Grace and Arian were amazing characters. Their story was a short one but their relationship wasn’t rushed. I wish we could get more of them.

Filled with action, romance and suspense Dragon King is bound to captivate you.

I highly recommend it!

I received an ARC of this book from InkSlinger PR in exchange for an honest review and as part of the book's blog tour promotions.

I don't know what it is with the novellas featured in the 1001 Dark Nights series. They all are just so good. I think that I have been a fan of every author that this series featured. And if there were authors that I wasn't a fan of, the series novella definitely made me one.

Donna Grant's Dark Kings series is a popular series that has great characters and wonderful stories. This novella has the dragon king for a hero. And what a hero he is. I also really liked this novella's heroine. She was a winner in my book. She was sweet and very lovable. Dragon King has everything that a reader loves in a Donna Grant book/series. The chemistry between the characters was obvious, the brotherhood that the hero had with his brethren, the action and the thrill and all the exciting events. In such a limited number of words, Dragon King gets to entertain any reader just as much as a full length novel can.

Another great little novella..

Wow! I’m such a dummy. I pre-ordered this in March and just read it tonight, and enjoyed every second of it. Loved Arian and Grace. It was nice seeing Con and Warrick again. I also thought it was pretty cool how Arian controlled the weather, and kept it raining so she couldn’t leave his cave.

I absolutely love all these little novellas of Ms. Grants, and I’ve read every one of them. As far as I’m concerned she could write nothing but these and I’d be happy as a pig in sh.. slop. Every time I read one I feel like I’ve read a whole novel, she packs so much story in such a little novella. I love how she makes it a good story but leaves it open for another story without making it a cliffhanger. I do HATE those cliffhangers.

As always she has a marvelous sex scene.

I look forward to her next one.

It was a short read although I wished it to be full-length novel. I happened to like this Grace character. I enjoyed her bluntness and sass. As for Arian, he's Arian. A hottie jade dragon. He's practically a stranger to me I seriously don't know what to talk about him.

The romance was insta-love! Ugh. Love at first sight stuff it's just cheesy. Nevertheless, I closed my mind's eyes on that matter because my desire to read dragon shifter needs to be fulfilled - that is just how much I love dragons and dragon shifters.

Actually, the book left me wondering of a few unsolved mysteries, unanswered questions which I am sure are going to have connections with the next instalment.

Main charaters: Arian (Dragon King of Jades) + Grace (human)

Grace and Arian. Hmmm. Maybe this author isn't my cup of tea. I DNFed the last book I tried and this one is half as long and I still got bored. I don't need constant action, in fact I hate that. But I also hate when the author resorts to a repetitive mantra about the characters thoughts rather than showing. More telling than showing. Predictable, repetitive, very little character development and card board cut out bad guys. I would expect better from an author with so many books under her belt...

Pleasant read. Not riveting or especially hot. Had some action, although the 'Dark' fae seemed rather ineffectual.

American novelist Grace Clark is on a mission to find her muse again. Since her every romance is set in Scotland, it seemed like a very good idea, to go there to find inspiration. She was determined to meet her editor's last deadline or risk defaulting on her contract altogether. Too bad it rained so damned much there. If there was one thing Grace truly feared, it was rain storms. Nothing good ever came out of them. Her mom left them on a stormy night. Her dad died on another storm. Now she was stuck in the middle of nowhere with buckets of rain pouring around her. Sure her muse had reappeared and she had written a ton in just a few hours, but now what? Without many options, Grace seeks shelter in a cave, that is dried and quiet. That's when absolutely gorgeous and totally naked Arian appears and demands that she leaves... For the past six centuries, Arian has slept. Some Dragon Kings sleep to pass the time, others to forget the past. Guilt still rode Arian hard. Since Con had cast a spell on all Dragon Kings not to fall for mortals, Arian had walked away from every woman he had associated with. Until Grace. He could tell she was afraid of the storm and of him, but she kept her head high and challenged his every demand. She made him smile and stirred a passion in him, he had never felt before. At first, he wanted her to leave, but after a trio of dark fae attacked him and she stayed, there was no way he could deny his need of her. In a moment of passion, Arian and Grace fall in each other's arms, only to have to face yet another foe before long. In Dragon King, Donna Grant awakens another sleeping dragon and stokes the fires of passion and love in him as he meets his mate and the challenges that only being a Dragon King can bring. A quick, hot and sexy read by the master herself.

Dragon King
Dark Kings, Book #6.5
By Donna Grant
ISBN# 9781940887678
Author’s Website: http://www.donnagrant.com/
Brought to you by OBS reviewer Heidi

Grace Clark is desperate to finish writing her book that is way overdue. If she can’t complete it in the next three weeks then the publisher will cancel her contract. She’s having a major case of writer’s block and doesn’t know what to do to get her creative juices flowing. So, she has come to Scotland, where her story takes place, in a last-ditch effort to get her book written.

In her search to find a quiet peaceful place, Grace stumbles onto Dreagan property and into the mountain of recently awakened Dragon King, Arian. He doesn’t know how she was able to find his home with the magic that hides the property from the mortals, but with the war brewing he’s worried that she’s working with Ulrik or the Dark. However, after spending some time with her, he quickly realizes she’s innocent, but strangely enough doesn’t want her to leave.

I wasn’t sure if I’d like this book or not. The previous book, Soul Scorched, was a dud for me and this one was a novella to boot, which I usually don’t like. But I found this story flowed nicely and I really enjoyed the characters. There was no real depth or backstory to them, but the book was a nice way to spend the afternoon.

Eeeeepppppp!!!!!

Dragon King is book 6.5 in the Dark Kings series and a novella with 1001 Dark Night *Love those ladies btw*

Grace is a writer, one who has traveled to Scotland to try and brake through the wall that is her writers block. The second book in her series is giving her a hard time and she has turned to the country side of Scotland to kick start her muse. Little does she know she has trespassed on Draegan land, and is for more "inspiration" than she signed up for.

Arian is a recently woken Dragon King, having slept the last six hundred years, only to be awaken from his slumber to help his fellow Kings in the War that has found them once again. Slowly shaking off his dragon slumber, Airan is fought with tenseness when he is alerted that someone has passed onto Draegon land, who or what it is, he doesn't yet know, but goes to find out. What he finds changes everything.

Grace and Airan are such a cute couple, love at first sight with them is so much fun to read. The back story we get on both of them is interesting to read about and feeds more into the drama with the Kings and the War that is coming. Again, I do FULLY recommend reading the other books in this series before reading this one, too much happens and their story won't make the most since if you do not. Donna Grant truly is the Mother of Dragons!

*eye roll*

Other than the fact that I’ll probably remember Arian only because turquoise happens to be my favourite colour, the Dragon King and novelist Grace made for a non memorable story.

Within a 48 hour timeframe:

Girl stumbles upon the cave entrance to a Dragon King who’s been sleeping for six centuries until recently. Rather than run away screaming after encountering a strange naked man in the dark depths of his lair, they instead make love because he/she is The One. As a side story, Dark Fae repeatedly attempt to breach Dreagan land. The King of Kings, Constantine, does his usual unhealthy manipulative routine equivalent to a waaay overprotective parent and uses the boy’s power over weather to effectively drive away the girl. Boy goes after girl, protecting her from another Dark Fae attack in the process, and all is forgiven.

The End. 🙄

Look, I’m all for reading a book with an open mind but I truly didn’t enjoy this novella. I don’t feel that it helped to drive the plot of the series, as a whole, forward in any way - which makes me more frustrated considering I would really prefer for everyone to $h!t or get off the pot, and get on with things already!

I’m taking a brief break to cleanse my literary palate and am willing to return in the hopes that the series soon progresses in a more productive and rewarding manner. 🤞
