Viette: A Story of Love and Hate

Rate this book
Stripped of her nobility and taken as a war prize, Viette is determined to take control of her life at all costs even if it means dominating a King to do so. As a servant, however, she's in no such position . . . or is she?

King Leonin of Whitmore has his sights set on Viette for things beyond scrubbing floors. Will she give into his affections or fight him at every turn? Caught between hating him for her precarious position in life, and enthralled by his attentions and passion, she doesn't even know her own heart.

Viette's world is filled with passionate intrigues, silver-tongue lies, and blinding deceit. As the story unfolds, Viette finds her own heart but loses sight of who is friend and who is foe.

I adore erotica, have been a reader for quite some time and in the last few years I've become an author.

I write everything from poetry to novels, flash to series. A variable hat of content, themes, categories. If it exists, I intend to write about it.

I'm a mixed hat of saucy, sensual, sexy, seductive, sharp, and scholarly. Keep it interesting, keep it snazzy.

Interesting plot, and impressive world building. But there was something really weird going on with the period, a hodge podge of Medieval, Victorian, and Steam Punk. Being a history nerd that set my teeth on edge on occasion but given that the story's fantasy it was much easier to ignore.

Basically as the plot goes, in the recent past the King Brisbane of Whitmore invades Yander, setting ruin to a huge patch of it and massacring the royal family. The crown prince (later king) Leonin convinces them to spare the princess/sacrificial maiden and he takes her prisoner with them when they promptly leave Yander. Because apparently Whitmore's too good for regular conquests.

The princess, Viette, is placed as Leonin's personal servant, because reasons. And during her servitude they develop a strong attraction for each other, except Leonin apparently already had the hots for her from the "moment he set eyes on her" as is the case with many romances.

They strike up a relationship but then things go down hill for the two with the introduction of politics and a couple pesky attempts on the King's life.

I don't know, I must say the romantic aspect was cheesy at best. Although the bad blood between the couple was quite intriguing. And hey, there's finally a sexually submissive alpha hero, which is a first.

Viette as a narrator didn't do much for me. She seemed too brash and hot headed until she just locks away in her head, never to be seen again. Her personality was uneven in that sense, but the situation was enough to keep me reading.

Leonin was better, except on the occasions when the author attempted to soften him up. Many times his emotional responses didn't seem that natural, but for the most part I liked being in his head.

But overall it was a nice quick read. I'd recommend it.

What I Thought:

Though I am not always a fan of the steamier reads, I do find I enjoy those that have enough steam to make it a 'secret' treat to read, but are just in your face. I found this read to be right in the category of those I like. It had plenty of steamy scenes, but also still had a storyline.

We are met with a King, who has won his kingdom by war, which resulted in the murder of our main female's family. She is now a servant, who holds her head up high, not stopping to the whorish ways of some of the others she knows, but she does feel for the King. However, she must battle with her feelings and the memories of his face as he slashed his way through everything she loved.

We following along as her life changes forever, after an encounter with the King, just before he leaves on a long journey. Will her life continue to change, or will she go back to her ways as a servant?

I thought the characters were fun, exciting and kept me interested in the story. Who wouldn't want to read about love, steaminess and castles?

The plot had a decent pace. At some points I would have liked it to have gone faster, but it actually worked out, as the slower scenes combatted the face-paced romance scenes.

Overall, I think this is a good read, for a steamy one. I would recommend reading it, if you are into the like of a good historical erotica/romance style read.

I was provided with a digital copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Viette's life revolves around political conspiracies, betrayals, forgotten promises and nasty surprises. Having been thrown down from a high-flying life to one of ridicule and shame, Viette has her patience and will for living tested beyond what her capabilities can endure. Having been a noble woman once, she takes solace in being a servant with dignity at least, when destiny decides to mess with her life and pushes her to become a courtesan. Things take a turn when the King of Whitmore takes a liking to Viette. Although she is drawn to him in turn, having had her trusts brutally crushed in the past, Viette has no idea if King Leonin means a word of what he says, not to mention her doubts about his ways of life. Does Viette manage to surmount her issues and find peace in a new love life, is what the book takes us through.

The storyline, although a tad predictable, is handled deftly by the author. The usual challenges of dragging narratives, complex characterisations are all very well managed in this plot by the author. I would have loved to see the pace of the book a tad faster, but nevertheless, this was an enjoyable read.
