This is an ok book about an eight year old boy hoping to get a pet as a birthday present. When he doesn't get what he wishes he and his best friend save up money to buy a carnivorous plant, since it's the closest thing he will get to ever having a pet. Once he has the plant it gets boring after a couple weeks and he wishes he could get a proper pet again. It reminded me a little of Ceder's Sally books, except I like those better. The kids don't gravitate towards this book, I think it looks a little too childish for the kids who can read it and it's too much text for the kids who would be interested in it. So, I think it would work well as a read aloud book. Or it just needs a good book talk! I thought it was a bit rambley and disjointed, and that it could have been split into different books. As a whole it's funny and cute and about everything: family, friendship, bullies, economy and pets.
