No more solos for this heart . . .

As a lawyer at Touchstone management, Tessa's position brings her up close and personal to some of the world's biggest heartthrobs. Sometimes that intimacy crosses professional lines, which is understandable considering Tessa's impressive contact list. But when rock star Brian Ellis set her aside for the girl of his dreams, Tessa can't help wonder if "spinster aunt" is her true vocation. Which explains her hook-up with rising star Brett Cherney at Brian's celebrity wedding . . .

As the lead singer of BroRide, Brett has lived the rock-n-roll bad-boy lifestyle to the very hilt. But when the girl of his dreams marries fellow rocker Brian Ellis, he buries his disappointment in the arms of an older woman. The following morning, Brett realizes what he experienced was only the beginning of a song he's been trying to write all his life. It's a seductive theme, which Tessa falls for again and again, but getting her to believe they have a hit is turning out to be far from a sure thing . . .

I'll admit... I didn't get very far into this one before I DNF'd. This is the oldest ARC on my Netgalley shelf, so I thought that would be a great place to start. When I looked up the book, however, it didn't interest me at all anymore. I'd never read a Christa Maurice, so I'm not sure what initially attracted me to this book. It surer wasn't the cover. There are only 10 ratings and 4 reviews for this book on Goodreads, so I decided to definitely give it a go and see if I could hype it up a bit. But I was confused from page one, and that feeling didn't abate the more I read. I'm letting bygones be bygones with this one and DNF'd. I don't know if it's because it was the fifth book in a series or the premise in general (probably both), but it's a big no for me.

Characters

There was an interesting stream of characters that you get introduced to rather quickly. Despite this being book 5, the author takes the time to introduce you to them with just enough backstory to fill in the pieces. Enter Tessa and Brett. Tessa is a focused career woman who is just realizing she isn’t as young as she used to be. Brett is a twenty something who isn’t happy with the regular women who fling themselves at him. When each needs comfort they find it in each other’s arms…only Brett isn’t prepared for it end.

The other cast of characters seemed to be merely a backdrop to Tessa getting her happiness. I imagine books 1-4 covered the ‘happy couples’ in this book. Tessa is serious but she can’t resist Brett’s boyish charm. He is a bit of an idiot at times but his heart is in the right place…most of the time.

Plot

It’s a romance. If you expect an army of a unique plot you are so in the wrong genre. Just like with most romances this book is tried and true with a twist. It was a little refreshing to have a book where a younger man goes gaga for an older woman. Like more than a decade age gap. Not to mention the music bit was interesting as well.

Overall

The characters were great! The plot was reliable. This is for sure something you’ll want to read when you are looking for that mindless romance to reset your batteries. It was perfect release after the fantasy and sci-fi’s I’ve been reading lately. It is always good to recharge!

Why not 5 you ask? Simple, the ending. It wasn’t an ending. The author did a wonderful job on the characters, at having a romance with a decent plot, and then just ends it. I was so dissatisfied with the ending that I almost knocked 2 stars off right there. However, it wasn’t meant to be a Hemingway or Fitzgerald. It was a romance and in the end, pun not intended, I liked it.

Where did I get it?

I got this book from net gallery for an honest review.

Tessa is a successful lawyer and Brett is the lead singer of a band and a playboy. They find themselves at wedding brooding: Tessa is starting to realise she's getting older and the love of Brett's life is getting married. They offer comfort to each other by having a weekend of sex.

I really liked Brett, he maybe young but he knew what he wanted and pursued Tessa. I wasn't too keen on Tessa: she was always angry and bitchy towards Brett. In my opinion, the chemistry between these two wasn't great, it appeared too one sided beginning to end. I understood Tessa's insecurities but felt her rude behaviour was just inexcusable. I just couldn't understand why Brett would want to be with someone who treated him like that. The final straw for me was when she pulls him by the hair and leads him away because he confesses his love for her. OMG could this woman get any worse.

This book wasn't for me, I couldn't connect to Tessa's character. I couldn't understand why Brett would want her especially, in light of her behaviour.

This is the first book I've read by Christa Maurice and the first book I've read in this series. The author did a good job catching me up!

Brett is the lead singer in BroRide and he's living the life of a rock star. However, when the girl of his dreams marries a fellow rocker, he's not happy.

Tessa is at the same wedding as Brett and is also not happy, so they seek the company of each other. Tessa is older than Brett. Was this a one-night stand? Or can it be something else?

This was just an okay read for me. Tessa was annoying and Brett was too accommodating.

Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for a copy of this book.

Holy Cougars, Batman!
So, Tessa gets dumped by the rock star, traded in for a newer, younger model. Poor Tessa is feeling a little down on herself until she catches the attention of Brett, whose own fiancée leaves him for Tessa’s ex. Revenge sex ensures and they find a shared attraction.
I kind of liked the twist on the whole rock star romance thing. The younger man and the older woman. The writing was good and the main characters were enjoyable to read. The book was short, just over 100 pages, so it is a quick read, but good all the same.

I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
