Lorraine Heath has always had a soft spot for emotional love stories. No doubt because growing up, watching movies with her mom, she was taught that the best movies "won't half make you cry."
She is the daughter of a British beauty (her mom won second place in a beauty contest sponsored by Max Factor® during which she received a kiss from Caesar Romero, (the Joker on the original Batman TV series) and a Texan who was stationed at Bovingdon while serving in the air force. Lorraine was born in Watford, Hertfordshire, England, but soon after moved to Texas. Her "dual" nationality has given her a love for all things British and Texan, and she enjoys weaving both heritages through her stories.
When she received her BA degree in psychology from the University of Texas, she had no idea she had gained a foundation that would help her to create believable characters—characters that are often described as “real people.” She began her career writing training manuals and computer code for the IRS, but something was always missing. When she read a romance novel, she became not only hooked on the genre, but quickly realized what her writing lacked: rebels, scoundrels, and rogues. She's been writing about them ever since.
Her work has been recognized with numerous industry awards including RWA's RITA®. Her novels have appeared on bestseller lists, including USA TODAY and the New York Times.
The author of more than 60 novels, she writes historical and contemporary romance for adults and historical romance for teen readers.
Under the names Rachel Hawthorne and Jade Parker, she writes popular contemporary, historical, and paranormal romance for teens readers. She also writes young adult novels with her son under the name J. A. London.
Nice twist near the end of the book, but then the following events were too rushed. It was like Ms. Heath suddenly remembered this was a short story and she needed to finish it ASAP. Other than that, I really liked the whole story.
The h is a writer looking for a story based on a real life hero because her "muse" has left her and she's got writers block.
My observations:
It lacked the usual intense conflict that I am used to in Heaths books. What miniscule conflict there was seemed lame to me (The hero not thinking he was a hero and not wanting to share his history with the famous dime novel writer heroine.)
I found little likable about either character and I still have no idea why they fell in love with each other. I also hate that the heroine is not attractive.
The hero was undefined IMHO. It was like Heath wasn't sure if she wanted him to be a man-whore or not. It gave me, as a reader, mixed signals. One minute he's thinking about the women he had and whether he had any bastards or pregnant women left behind, and then he's like "it's been so long since he had a woman", then it's mentioned that all the women he had he screwed he just up and left right after the deed. Never getting emotionally attached. My question is why do we need this irrelevant information? It made me not like him right off the bat. I will however admit, that in the end he wasn't so bad but I still didn't love him, and still cannot understand why they fell in love. There needed to be more moments of them together for it to be logical to me. Being a novella it's in MHO she wasted too much time on the bullshit writing thing with the h and should have concentrated on the romance build.
Heath is an awesome writer technically, and because of her excellent concentration on details I felt she should seriously avoid writing novellas. She is an author who needs time to craft and writing a short story doesn't give her the time.
Overall.. well I finished it, and it was ok. Certainly not her best, and I would not recommend this one.
I wish Lorraine Heath would write more Western Historicals. I absolute adore the heroes she's written in those and they're far, far superior to the ones found in her England-based historicals. Give me more perfection like Clayton and Jake! Those two were all kinds of amazing and I absolutely loved them to bits and pieces.
Now, onto this book itself. I wish this had been a full-length novel. It had the makings of being something really great (especially with that twist/reveal at the end!) but it was just all so rushed. The twist was so great and it was so wasted! It was super instalovey (they're in love ) and the conflict and solution came and went way too quickly. I guess it's the nature of a novella, but it still annoyed me.
This was a sweet little western read that had a nice twist near the end. Even though it was a short, it had a lot of emotional depth to it. I hope that we see more stories come out of this little Texas town.
A brooding hero and a chipper young girl.. There was a surprising twist towards the very end- and how I wish the author would have used this as the story's central point!
This book is in a genre that I do not often read. This one made me think a LOT and I am glad I read it. The main characters had their own demons that led them to the paths they walked in life. Both had to be strong in the face of fear and determined to jump the hurdles that were encountered on their individual journeys. The circumstances that brought them together required trust. They learned that no one is perfect and sometimes people do change. I really enjoyed this book a LOT. The author did a great job in telling this story.
My holds for the next books in the Immortals After Dark series still aren’t available so I’m trying to knock out the last couple of incomplete prompts in the 2021 Heaving Bosoms Reading Embrace. I read Heath's Texas Trilogy a few months ago and really liked it, so I was happy to see that this short western of hers fits the Sheriff of my Vagina category. The hero is the sheriff of a small town in Texas. He was in the newspapers for helping take down a gang of robbers. The heroine is a writer of dime novels who comes to town hoping to shadow him for inspiration for a new book. It was a fine little novella, just nothing special about it. I did like the little twist at the end. I don’t think I’d recommend it unless you were were also looking for a short book to finish a reading challenge.
STATS Genre: historical western romance Setting: Gallant, Texas, May 1884 Book Length: 79 pages, 21k words. novella. Format: ebook borrowed on Hoopla, copyright 2006, ebook edition published May 2015. Heat: 1.5
I enjoyed this book. Though it's a bit too short to my liking, but I definitely sense the southern atmosphere. I was hoping for more drama. But overall a good before bed reading.
This is the first book I've read by Lorraine Heath and I really liked it. I admit that I read it solely because of the Reading Challenge for the 2021 virtual Coastal Magic Convention but I'm really glad that I picked it up.
Historical M/F Romance really isn't my thing but this one was really good and touched on all of my emotions. The hero was aggravating but the heroine was tenacious. It was easy to suspect that Matt had something in his past that he didn't want Andi to find out. But when it was finally revealed there was so much more to it than what I had imagined and it brought tears to my eyes.
This really was a great short novella that was well worth the few hours I spent reading it.
I love a good western and did enjoy this one. Andrea is a writer who is trying to find inspiration for her newest series and she has chosen Matthew as her muse. It was a blast to watch them interact especially with Matthew being so against the whole process at first and then becoming acclimated to it. There is also a fun twist to the entire story that I appreciated. I just found myself wishing that this had been a full-length novel. There was so much potential yet I felt like the characters and the romance was underdeveloped. We were told a lot more than we were shown.
I know this was a “Novella” but it need about 200 more pages. Lorraine Heath’s writing was excellent. The characters were intriguing enough that I wished there was more “meat” to this story. Again I love a good slow burning, descriptive story (that unfortunately this short story didn’t provide) And IMO descriptive writing is where Lorraine thrives.
After reading a five star book, I ften find it difficult to settle on another book. Such was the case this time. I hoped I might avoid it this time by reading a quick shot story and remembered I had this one in my TBR. It worked. I started reading Lorraine Heath book years ago when she was writing Westerns. I've always loved this trope and while I understood it, I was still rather sad when she mostly stopped writing them as they are still some of my favourites. Reading this book brought me back to those days. At only 70 pages it's very short but because Ms. Heath is such a wonderful writer, I still enjoyed this book despite its length
Set in Texas in the 1880's, Andrea Jackson is our heroine. She writes dime store novels for a living but her muse has dried up. In oder to re-energize her writing, she decides to write a story about Matthew Knight, sheriff of a small town and a hero who foiled a robbery and shot the robbers. The very absolute last thing he wants is to be the hero of some book but Andrea is very insistent.
There isn't much time for a lot of character development but the author did an amazing job in getting me to care a great deal for these two. I even found myself a bit choked up a couple of times, but then that's something she excels at. I'm so glad I read this one even though it did only take a few hours.
“A man could live with you in poverty for the remainder of his days, and he’d still be rich.”
May 1884, Texas. Sheriff Matthew Knight gets his world turned upside down when Andrea Jackson arrives in town one day. The writer of dime novels, with titles like “Lone Star Lily and the Treacherous Cattle Drive” and “Lone Star Lily and the Notorious Outlaw”, Andrea is in town hoping to find her “new hero”. After her old muse left, Andi wants to use Matt as her new inspiration for her new hero, a character she wants to write a series about…Texas Knight. Matt continuously tells her he is not hero material but the grumpy sheriff eventually relents and promises her one day to shadow him to form her character.
This is a short novella, about 80-90 pages. It follows Andi and Matt over the course of the day that she shadows him to take notes for her new hero. I loved seeing Andi show up early for the day and Matt try and bore her so she leaves. His reluctance and grumpiness was fun paired against her more outgoing nature. Not a whole lot of angst since it is a novella, I did find myself wishing this was a longer book instead just to give the characters and their story more time. We do get a bit of a twist, but otherwise this western historical is short and sweet.
I officially only have one novella and one full-length novel to go in my Lorraine Heath read through. This is a short, fast-paced novella that pulls zero punches as Lorraine digs into these characters and puts them through about as much as she can in 70 pages.
Andrea Jackson has writer's block. She has written a string of best selling penny dreadfuls but can't seem to get the words flowing. Her block is a problem because she needs the money from her writing so she strikes out to a small town to shadow sheriff Matthew Knight as inspiration for her new series. He was profiled in an Austin newspaper for a recent act of heroism so she thinks he'll be the perfect inspiration for her new main character. But she didn't ask him if she could follow him around before arriving in town and Matt would rather do almost anything than talk to a novelist because he is no hero.
If you're reading this for what it is, a short novella that leans hard into insta-love and has all the vibes of a Western, you'll probably enjoy it. Andrea is a vibrant character who has a real reason for needing to write. She's willing to do anything she needs to find inspiration so she can pay the bills. Matt is such a stereotype. Lorraine is Lorraine-ing with him. He is exactly what you'd expect if you've read her other Texas books.
I read this while waiting for a flight and it was a great distraction in an otherwise stressful situation. Not life changing, but it's only 70 pages and does the job.
This novella is a short read BUT it really packs a punch! I got a little teary eyed at one point.
I so adored Matt (The Reluctant Hero). He always told Andrea that he was no hero. He doesn't want to be her's either. Andrea is a writer and she has lost her muse! She desperately needs a hero to come to her rescue.
Andrea is caring for her ailing mother. She discovered that her newly deceased father embezzled money from the bank where he worked to find a cure for his wife. Andrea has a strong sense of right and wrong. She will pay the bank back every cent that is owed them. She needs her muse!
Matt reluctantly agrees to have Andrea follow him around for a day. Only the one day. He does his best to get her to leave but Andrea is like a fly that landed in honey, she is stuck on him like glue!
I was entranced to my e-reader. I turned the pages as fast as I could. I was swept back in time for such a delightful ride. There is one sexy scene. It was written in such a matter that any adult shouldn't be offended as it was so glossed over.
This is on me, I read the other of the short Heath novella The Gunslinger written in the 2014 timeframe and was like, errr, no thanks, but then I read this one anyway (the reviews mentioned clever twist, so I thought, why not). Nothing really wrong, but Heath goes super hard on the insta-love; the MCs spend one (1) day together and both think its love and make life plans.
Matt is a sheriff with a murky past and a secret heart of gold, recently in the news for turning in bank robbers on the dead side of the Dead Or Alive reward chart. Andrea is a writer with writers block looking for a muse. She shadows him for one day to get inspo and naturally they end the day in bed. Which means of course love and forever, god forbid you bang it out with the hot sheriff and dip.
The twist was fine. I think maybe if I were sheriff with a Big Secret I wouldn't keep evidence of that secret in plain view in my office, but that's just me.
É um conto de 70 páginas... Que na minha opinião é incrível, fantastic, perfect... E que faz desejar mais dessa story...
😍😍
Andrea Jackson e Matthew Knight
Uma escritora que procura um herói e um Xerife que não é um herói... Não tem como não amar... Impossible not to love... O casal tenta a toda forma negar a verdade, mas o amor e o desejo é um sentimento forte demais para ser escondidos... E claro que esses sentimentos vencem no final...
Good writing, a potentially great story, but very short and with few character developments.
If the writer had given it a few more pages to drag a little more the story so she could develop the characters and their relationship it would be the perfect story for me.
THE STORY: Andrea Jackson is a writer of dime novels who comes to the western town to meet Sheriff Matthew Knight in order to have him star as the hero of her new series of novels. Matthew knows that he is no hero and doesn't want anything to do with the project by the strong willed woman. A deal between the two, results in the two finding out more about one another than they expected.
OPINION: This novella is sweet and the dance that goes on between Andrew and Matthew is sweet. This novella feels too short and I think that this could have easily have been a longer novel. The story has an unexpected twist that once revealed gives what happens previously more meaning. (Don't read spoilers!) Finding out the twist is half the fun of the story. The two characters are interesting although there is a lot going on for such a short novella. I liked both of the characters and really liked the way the story ended.
WORTH MENTIONING: THE RELUCTANT HERO was originally published as part of the anthology MY HEROES HAVE ALWAYS BEEN COWBOYS.
FINAL DECISION: Short and sweet, this book has a twist that gives the story more depth than it first appeared to have.
What a great story. A little bit of fun, a little bit of drama, a little bit of love and a little bit of sex. What more could I ask for. And Matthew was “a reluctant hero,” just like the title of the book says. Matthew was everything a hero is supposed to be, even if he didn’t think so. And, even though Andi left him when she found out the truth she came around in a super big way. She and Doctor John Martin sure saved Matthew's hind-end. I love westerns and this was a good one.
There was a little sexual tension between Matt and Andi, and the one sex scene was nice. The sex was not overly descriptive but it was there. There wasn’t any kind of body parts mentioned so I think it would be ok with you prudes that don’t want sex in their books. I don’t know, it might still be too much.
Anyway, it was a really sweet story and I liked it, as I do all of Ms. Heath’s books, of which I’ve read 12 to 15, maybe more.
I just finished this book and was very happy with ending. I have never read her books before but I have bought about a dozen more. Thank you for a good afternoon. You do good work.
