The cold chill of rain and a booming crash of thunder wakes Ella from her unconscious state. She finds herself in the middle of a bloodied battlefield surrounded by death and decay with no memory of who she is or why she's there. Through sheer will, she manages to stumble into the tavern of a Northern town. Her dark skin is already a rarity in this Northern region, but her white hair and violet eyes make her downright odd. In order to survive, she accepts a position as a young lord's magical advisor and begins to formulate a new identity.
While navigating the rules of the North and rediscovering her magical prowess, she soon finds herself developing an infatuation with her employer. Her gentle nature is challenged, however, by the arrival of the assassin on the lord's payroll. Through their interactions something stirs within her, bringing forth the truth about who she really is. Everything she's built is threatened when her memories start to return, tearing her in two different directions; different personalities, different ideals, and different men. With a civil war brewing, she must decide who her allegiance belongs her new home, or her people.
From the very first page, I was hooked. The imagery of Ella waking up in the middle of a battlefield instantly pulled me in, and her journey of self-discovery kept me turning pages late into the night. The mix of romance, magic, and political intrigue made this such a compelling read. I can’t wait for the next installment!
