The Making—and Remaking—of a Hero
In this Pride and Prejudice variation, Elin Eriksen’s The Heroic Mr Darcy’s Bad Manners is a thoroughly entertaining twist on the classic tale, where a past rescue, a hidden identity, and a cascade of social blunders set the stage for a delightful slow-burn romance. Elizabeth Bennet may become wealthy and titled in this story, but her heart still belongs to the young gentleman who once saved her life—and later charmed her at a London masquerade. It is only upon their second meeting, in Hertfordshire, that her opinion begins to sour, as Darcy’s behaviour toward those beneath him—including herself—shatters the image she once held of him.
Darcy, meanwhile, is vexed to find himself drawn to a country miss he believes beneath his notice, not realising she is the very lady he cannot forget. Now he must face the fact that he has driven away the only woman he ever wished to marry, and he must confront the damage done and begin to earn Elizabeth’s good opinion all over again. He slowly begins to redeem himself, and through one final, heartfelt gesture to defend justice and Elizabeth’s family name, he risks his own name to bring justice where it was long denied, revealing a depth of character Elizabeth cannot ignore—and proves that the hero she once loved never truly disappeared; he simply had to find his way back.
There’s a strong supporting cast too—not-so-bad Bennet parents, and Elizabeth’s loving grandmother Bennet and her friend, Darcy’s no-nonsense aunt Eudora, play welcome roles in helping things along. Jane ends up with Colonel Fitzwilliam in a natural, well-paced pairing, while Bingley fades from contention, his capriciousness speaking for itself. And though Elizabeth has already made up her mind to choose Darcy, it is rather satisfying to watch their loved ones nudge them in the right direction just the same.
Eriksen’s affection for these characters—old and new—shines through, and with each new book, her storytelling becomes more confident and engaging.
Highly recommend.

I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review, but my preordered copy came through on my Kindle before I had a chance to read the arc.

Elizabeth Grace—one of my favourite audiobook performers who really knows her craft. Her Darcy voice is soooo Darcy. Her variety and range of voices always leaves you without doubt a different character is speaking. I love her.
