An Unexpected Christmas Gift . . .
Chris Walker was a scarred Army Ranger who isolated himself in the mountains. But Holly Bennett would soon be changing that situation. But for now, he has to convince his mother that he is okay and is not coming home for Christmas. He wants his solitude and knows how to keep himself calm. He is just not comfortable being around other people, and he can work off the stress by chopping wood -- far more than he needs, but still therapeutic and not wasted. All he needs is silence, solitude, and distance between himself and the rest of the world. After his time in the military, it has become important that he can keep from hurting anyone else. She doesn't want him to become a wounded animal -- yet that is what he has become. And he may be beyond repair. Now, when he sets up another log to chop, he hears a car struggling through the snow on a barely passable hill... followed by a crash! He jumps in his diesel truck and heads toward the main road to help. He finds a Jeep Cherokee smashed nose-first against an enormous boulder, a small woman standing next to it. He snarls as he asks what she is doing on this road in this weather, but she immediately replies that she was following GPS directions to a cabin rental. He looked at her screen and saw the GPS trying to take her to the old Brennan place which had burned up 3 years ago! And she had already paid to rent it! Regretting his words, he offered to take her to his cabin to use his phone and call someone. At least she will be out of this weather.
He finds that she is full of Christmas cheer, decorating his porch and humming Christmas songs. Can she change his attitude and heal his painful memories? Is it time to melt the ice that keeps him numb and let her warmth draw him to her?

Chris Walker is a former Army Ranger who was severely wounded and forced to leave the Army. He went back home to Texas, but he no longer fit in there. So he moved to the cabin his grandfather had left to him in the Montana mountains to be left alone. He doesn't need anyone; he wants no Christmas decorations. He just wants to be left alone; it's what he deserves.
He wants the solitude to remember the ghosts of his past—the ones he can never forget. Kandahar, Afghanistan, changed his life forever. He'll never be able to return to who he once was.
His parents want him to come home for Christmas, where his mother will try to feed him to death, and his father will walk on eggshells trying not to upset him.
No he's staying right where he is—alone. He semi-lies to her by saying he must go because the weather is changing... It is, but it won't make any difference to him.
Then Holly Bennett crashes into his life. He heard a vehicle coming up the barely passable road and could tell it was having problems, then he heard a crash. Since there are few guardrails and many steep drop-offs on the road, he knows he has to go help the driver.
Her Jeep has smashed into a boulder and is leaking fluid, so it will have to be towed away. Turns out her rental cabin was a scam. The place had burned down three years ago. Luckily she will be issued a refund, but by the time she'll receive it, her vacation will be over.
All she wanted was to get away from Denver for a week at Christmas to rethink her life. She had established an event planning business four years ago, but her partner and best friend, Jessica, had embezzled almost forty thousand dollars of her business funds before she left. Jessica had a gambling addiction. The worst thing was that Jessica had been her best friend, and yet she never knew that side of her. Insurance paid for most of the loss, but Holly used almost all of her money to repay her clients. Her reputation was ruined, and she had to close the company. She's starting over at twenty-eight with little more than spunk, optimism, and a stressed bank account. And then she fell for a scam! But she's lucky to have Chris come to her rescue.

This was a fast moving short Christmas romance. It starts very quickly and Ms McRae spun a world with characters dealing with emotional struggles. Christopher Walker, 34, escaped to Montana, locking himself away in his inherited cabin (from his Grandfather) trying to make what happened in his service as an Army Ranger, not destroy him completely. This man will break your heart. His pain, anger, his need to find peace within himself has left him questioning his own worth as a person.🥹 Chris' scars on the outside do not compare to the ones he carries on the inside. He struggles with PTSD and guilt. He prefers to be alone, but Chris was hurting badly. He didn't want anyone around him. It was better that way. Or was it?
Holly Bennett, 28, came to Montana to rent a cabin to escape her worries and stresses. She too has been left with betrayals and the loss of her business by shady dealings from a person she trusted. And in the middle of a snow storm, she gets into an accident. Chris comes to the rescue. Her cabin paradise was a scam. What can she do? Chris has an idea. And as the raging blizzard traps them in very close proximity, Holly shows Chris that he was a man worth loving, touching, and holding. That he was beautiful.🥰😘 The only way to heal was to not ignore or bury the hurt, but to push through it with support and letting someone see all of you. I love how the author blends both worlds seamlessly, giving readers a sense of connection and continuity.

Holly, an event planner, is escaping her own heartbreak when fate—and an unexpected accident—brings the two together. It's a short and steamy, instalove, OTT, opposites-attract, grumpy-sunshine, forced-proximity, curvy girl gets her mountain man Christmas romance. Holly is a city girl who is a sassy ray of Christmas sunshine. She has rented a cabin in the mountains for Christmas when she gets in an accident. Chris is a hunky, grumpy, somewhat grinchy ex-military man who suffers from PTSD. He moved to the mountains 3 years ago to live alone. He hears Holly crash and goes to help her. When he realizes she was scammed renting a non-existent cabin, he takes her to his cabin to ride out the storm. As they spend time together, things get hot and S-T-E-A-M-Y, but Chris is worried he is too damaged for her. Can she show him that he is worthy of love? These two had great chemistry. They were both facing challenges but found love and support together. The ending was so happy. I loved it.

Both main characters are a little older and more experienced in life, each carrying their own past trauma — and watching them begin to heal together was genuinely touching. I especially appreciated that there isn’t an age gap here; both characters are mature, grounded, and act like adults who’ve lived and learned.
While the plot itself isn’t particularly unique, the strength of this story lies in its characters. Their emotional depth, quirks, and realistic chemistry make this book stand out. This was a heartfelt story of second chances, a damaged soul, and fresh starts. Chris is an ex military who is chosing a life of solitude after an accident scarred him at war, that is until he finds Holly on the road, she is lost and just had a car accident. He rescues her, and in turn she rescues him from loneliness.
Holly is also trying to restart her life, and when CHris offers his place until the storm dies down, she sees in him the man that is damaged but full of life to live. TOgether they make everything work. She is his balm, he is her rock.

I enjoyed this fast paced insta-attraction romance. Chris is a scarred ex-Ranger who chose the quiet of the mountains to try and cope with his experiences. Holly literally crashes into his life while attempting to escape what her existence has turned into. These two broken people make quite the pairing. Pulling at the heartstrings, this story points out the difficulties veterans face returning to civilization. It was interesting to read how Holly chipped away at the barricades he put between them (as a means of protecting them both). It was ultimately an endearing tale that had a definate kick of spice.😉.

Holly is on her way to a vacation cabin but she ends up wrecking her car and thankfully Chris is there to save her; she has no choice but to stay in his cabin for a while because there is a snowstorm. Slowly she breaks down his walls, but she herself is not perfect and is struggling, but they find perfection in their imperfection.
This was a short but well written and very very sweet story. I loved how they came together and their HEA and bonus scenes. Awwwww!
The author is new to me, and I picked up this book because it's part of the Mountain Man Christmas multi-author series, and I'm excited to read more from the series as well as the author!.

I felt I could relate to the story, my husband being ex-military. We have similar issues we work through on a daily basis, but I refuse to let him shut himself off from the world. When Holly literally crashes into Chris’ quiet life in the mountains running from her failed life in Denver, she was only planning a week in the mountains to figure out what to do next. I loved how the book started in Chris' POV, normally this type of book–at least most of what I’ve read–start in the woman’s POV.
