JOURN-E, edited by Frank Coffman, publishes short fiction, non-fiction, art and poetry in the genres of Adventure, Mystery, Fantasy, Horror and Science Fiction. It is a very attractive publication, both in terms of the look and the quality of the contents. The contributors are always a pleasing mix of established writers, like Katherine Kerestman and Ngo Binh Anh Khoa, and newcomers. This issue of JOURN-E is a delight, and my favorite one to date. My favorite story was probably Andrew Fraknoi’s “In Conversation with the Downloaded Me”. The title gives a good indication of what the story is about. Life on Earth has been largely wiped out by aliens. In an attempt to survive, a few humans downloaded their consciousness to computers in an underground data center. But there is still one human on the surface, the original version of one of the downloaded entities. It is a challenging concept, handled very skillfully. Of the poetry, Kerestman’s “A Sonnet from the Gallery, No. 666” is great fun. The art is all very pleasing, with Paula Hammond’s “Escape” being my favorite. And in non-fiction, Frank Coffman’s “The Kolchak Formula” is an entertaining look at a perennial favorite character. Coffman deserves great credit, not only for putting out an attractive journal, but also for giving new writers a venue to publish and get the wider audience that they deserve.
