Mary-Jayne Preston didn't do one-night stands ever. Except for her one and only with devastatingly handsome tycoon Daniel Anderson, who swept her off her feet before she knew what was happening! The attraction was powerful and seemingly mutual. But when she told him she was pregnant, all bets were off!
Daniel hadn't let his guard down since tragedy struck his own life four years earlier. Now he's drawn to the irresistible M.J., but cannot or will not let himself fall in love with her. He insists on marriage to protect her and their twins, but M.J. will accept nothing less than true love from this lone wolf forever.
About Helen Helen Lacey grew up reading Black Beauty, Anne of Green Gables and Little House on The Prairie. These childhood classics inspired her to write her first book when she was seven years old, a story about a girl and her horse. Although, it wasn’t until the age of eleven when she read her first Mills & Boon, that she knew wanted to write romances. Her parents’ love of travel meant she saw much of the world in those early years and she feels fortunate to have had a diverse and interesting education over several continents.
She continued to write into her teens and twenties with the dream of one day being a published author. A few years and careers later, including motel operator, florist, strapper, dog washer, and retail manager, she got the call from Harlequin Special Edition. She loves writing about tortured heroes, both cowboys and CEO’s, and heroines who finally get the love of the man of their dreams.
From Welsh parents and a large family, she lives on the east coast of Australia in a small seaside town at the southern most point of The Great Barrier Reef, with her wonderfully supportive husband, many horses, two cats and three spoiled dogs.
Good Storyline But Boringly Repetitive Heroine Who Was Unlikeable
In this book we meet Mary-Jane who is subbing for her good friend who owns and operates a boutique in an upscale resort while the friend heads home to care for her sick mother. It is supposed to be a three-week gig that morphed into six months. While running the store she runs into Daniel, a beautiful, cocky, arrogant, full-of-himself, CEO of the resort and they have this undeniable monstrous sexual pull. Daniel travels between all of his family-owned resorts keeping tabs on everything and everyone so he is not around much at all but he does come to town to celebrate his grandmother's birthday. MJ, as she is called by friends, has also become close friends with his grandmother and attends her birthday gala.
Now a little about the swoon-worthy Daniel. Other than the descriptions listed above he is also a sad, lonely, grief-filled man who lost his pregnant wife to an auto accident four years earlier and has sworn that he will never love again. Losing is too painful and he associates love with loss and brokenness. He is also thrilled to see Mary-Jane at his grandmother's birthday party and before long they are back in his bedroom and a month or so later she realizes she is pregnant with his child.
MJ is an honest woman and knows she must tell him he is soon to be a father. He has been calling her since their night together and he feels so drawn to her that he wants to continue seeing her until he gets her out of his system. She is indignant and tells him to go to hell. Wow!
Unfortunately this book is mostly about their battles, their stubbornness and Mary-Jane's continual whining. In her warped mind Daniel can do nothing right and she is determined to keep him out of her life and is not to keen on letting him be a father as well although she says she is. Her actions speak louder than words and her dialog is so repetitive that I was ready to lay the book to rest numerous times but I trudged on for Daniel's sake. I was curious to see if she would ever treat him as a human being. She was terribly bitchy and I longed to reach through my Kindle and strangle her. We hear the same thing from her throughout the whole book, minus the last few pages and I had every whiny, stupid line memorized and somewhat lost interest. It was a shame since the storyline was a very good one. I just didn't care for Mary-Jane and she was her own worst enemy. She was not likeable in the least and if the protagonists are not likeable then it is difficult for me to like and enjoy a book. Her words hurt Daniel at every turn and hadn't he already been through enough?
I like my books more balanced. We all are aware there will be angst and heartache but also love and devotion as well as a HEA (well, most of the time) but it is my opinion that there needs to be some happiness as well and there just wasn't much of it to speak of until the last few pages. That is just not enough for me
My favorite part of this book: Once Daniel has been intimate with Mary-Jane no other woman is enough and he remains celibate during their time apart. He had one date and was so miserable that he had her home by 9pm and only kissed her hand goodnight! That is a good thing for this reader who detests man-whores. The sleeping around stuff just doesn't get it for this gal. Daniel had class.
My least favorite: MJ's repetitiveness and unwillingness to look beyond her own self and insecurities to see the man that Daniel was and understand the horribleness that he lived through losing his wife and unborn child.
Would I recommend this book? Probably yes, but I will say that it is not a re-read for me. I am interested in the connecting stories from the other characters in this book and will give them a try.
THE CEO’S BABY SURPRISE by Helen Lacey is Harlequin Special Edition release for April 2015.
Unable to ignore the sizzling chemistry, Mary-Jayne Preston gave in to passion and had a fling with the CEO of the hotel group where she was looking after a boutique for her friend. She walked away the next morning before Daniel Anderson even woke up.
Yet Daniel doesn’t think one night was enough and he pursued her. But she thwarted all his effort. She knew widower Daniel had closed off his heart to love and commitment. Wanting it all, she was not ready to be Daniel’s short-term fling.
Then she found out that one night had consequences and she was pregnant. Would she tell Daniel? And what would Daniel do? Would he commit to her for his twin sons she’s carrying or for the love he had in his heart for MJ? Would MJ accept Daniel’s proposal of marriage knowing he was doing the honorable thing only?
THE CEO’S BABY SURPRISE is a story that will stay with a reader long time after she closes the book. It has that momentous impact by all the emotion depicted in this romance. Another shimmering and mesmerizing romance full of breathtaking emotions from author Helen Lacey.
Loved this story and re-visiting the small beach side town of Crystal Point and the characters I have gotten to know in previous stories this is Mary-Jayne's story and I have always had a soft spot for MJ with her honest straight forward and carefree life but has she met her match in CEO Daniel Anderson who runs a company in control of resorts around the world but their attraction could light up a street with the spark of electricity between them and after a one night stand MJ finds herself pregnant what else can she do but tell Daniel and of course Mr always in charge is determined to marry Mary-Jayne. This is a great story where MJ and Daniel come to terms with a lot of truths about each other and themselves in a journey that will keep very interested I highly recommend this one you will not be disappointed.
Good book with two very stubborn people. MJ doesn't do one night stands, but she had one night when she couldn't resist her attraction to Daniel. She woke up the next morning sure she'd made a mistake, and crept away, then avoided his phone calls. Then she discovered she was pregnant and knew she had to tell him.
Daniel had been intrigued by and attracted to MJ since they met. Their one night together was amazing and he wants more of them, but he can't get MJ to talk to him. When he finally tracks her down, he's stunned by her news.
Overall, I liked MJ and Daniel, but they were incredibly stubborn. As the oldest in the family, he's the one that took over the family business when his grandfather died. He became very focused on work, putting in long hours. He fell in love with a woman very much like him and was devastated when she and their unborn child were killed in an accident. Since then he hasn't allowed himself to get emotionally involved with anyone. When he finds out that MJ is pregnant, at first he's a real jerk about it, accusing her of lying or trying to get money from him. Once he calms down, he realizes that this is anew chance for him to have the family he wants. He immediately tells MJ that they should get married, and is surprised when she says no. He doesn't understand why, when it makes perfect sense.
MJ hadn't planned on becoming pregnant, but she's happy she's going to be a mother. She's independent and something of a free spirit. When Daniel proposes marriage, she flat out refuses him. She may be a free spirit, but when she marries it is going to be for love. She wants the same kind of relationship her parents and siblings have, where love is the most important thing in their lives. No matter how great the sex is, she won't sentence herself to a loveless marriage.
The sparks fly between these two every time they get together. Daniel is determined to get MJ to marry him and go back to San Francisco with him to raise the children. He has a tendency to make decisions and expect her to go along with them, instead of talking to her and actually listening to what she says. He also tries to convince her that love is not important, that what they have is enough. MJ absolutely refuses to settle for anything other than love. She feels that Daniel is only interested in marriage because of the babies. She accuses him of being controlling and too used to getting what he wants just because he's rich. MJ has her own issues that cause her to push him away. She sees herself as someone who isn't controlled by time and money, and Daniel is everything she's always detested. How can she be falling for someone so different than anyone she'd been with before?
There were times I really wanted to shake both of them for being so blind about what they felt and how mean they could be to each other. Everything Daniel did showed just how much he loved her, but he just couldn't let go of his fears and admit that's what he felt. And MJ couldn't get past her attitude about his money. The one thing that came out right from all their fussing and feuding was that they got to know and understand each other and themselves, and that was what it took for them to finally take that step. I really loved Daniel's way of showing her that she was "in his heart, over his heart, on his heart. Forever."
I recieved a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review
Mary Jane Preston doesn't do one night stands or flings, she wants the fairy tale romance, but after trying to ignore a sizzling attraction she sleeps with the CEO of the restort where is working. But is gone before He even wakes up the next morning.
Daniel is more determined than ever to be with Mary Jane, he doesn't do romance and flowers but he can't ignore how MJ sets his pulse racing, and a fling is just what he thinks is needed to get MJ out of his system.
However MJ is fighting off his advances, that is until she founds out she hasn't been eating dodgy foods, she is in fact pregnant. But Daniel has known heartache in the past and has closed off his heart...
Daniel is now saying that marriage is the only option, but MJ wants the fairy tale not marriage because of her pregnancy.
I enjoyed this book by Helen Lacey, it was well written although a short and easy to read story one that I still remember, even now writing this review when I read the book a few weeks ago...
Daniel does seem a little bit controlling and I wanted to slap them both more than once, but as ever in life it's never as easy as just shouting at the pages over what they should do...
It's an enjoyable read and any romance fan will love this book.
"The CEO's Baby Surprise" by Helen Lacey is a quick, easy and lovely read. We have Mary-Jayne Preston, M.J., who is one of the good girls. She is watching her friends boutique in a hotel and meets Daniel. Daniel Anderson is the CEO of the hotel and sweeps M.J off her feet.
After a very HOT one night together M.J. leaves but Daniel wants more time together with her intimately, and she is looking for more than being the girl he comes to just for sex. Daniel who is a widower whose wife and unborn child died wants the fun, but not the commitment. That is until he finds out their one night has consequences and M.J. is pregnant.
You'll love this story. It makes you root for this couple and hope that things turn out well in the end. Much more to the book than what I've given you but it is definitely worth the read.
Mary-Jayne is the bad girl in the Preston family, and I'd been eagerly awaiting her romance. This book didn't disappoint! Mary-Jayne is very bad, and Daniel is simply scrumptious. Helen Lacey just gets better and better.
The saying never say never comes true in this wonderful read from Helen Lacey. Mary-Jane Preston never does one night stands until she comes face to face with an out of control attraction that completely overpowers her. The attractions comes in the form of Daniel Anderson, he's devastatingly handsome , suave and everything a girl could want, except for the last four years he has made sure to never let his guard down, letting it slip will just bring tragedy to his life again.
So when Mary-Jane informs him that their one night stand has resulted in her being pregnant with twins , he 's all for marriage to make sure their twins are protected but falling in love with her is the one thing he refuses to do. But Mary-Jane doesn't just want his ring and his protection she wants his heart and fight to get it is what she will do.
This is one of those books that will stay with romance readers for a long time after the last page has been read. I adored the character of Mary-Jane, even with everything the world of an unexpected pregnancy brings she still holds her head high, and even still sees the humor in life. Spunky, fun and just so very likable, that I doubt any reader will be able to find fault with her.
Daniel was the one that my heart broke for, the heartache and loss he faced in the past really is something no one ever has to go through. He is a truly broken man and of course in desperate need of some serious tender loving care. But as we all know not every broken person wants to let anyone in so the author letting Mary-Jane be this really awesome in your face try and make me go away kin of character was really neat.
It's a stunning story of romance, new hope and all set within the perfect bubble of beautiful writing. I highly recommend this read for all lovers of romance journeys with powerful emotion and a message of there is always being a new tomorrow.
5/5 star review " One night and nine months leads to the road to of happiness "
The CEO's Baby Surprise by Helen Lacey This book needs to be on your bucket list of books to read. ONE night with the CEO of the resort and Mary-Jane found out that the food poisoning wasn’t the reason for how she was feeling, she was pregnant. Mary-Jane was subbing for her friend who owns and operates a boutique in an upscale resort and she had attended Daniel’s grandmother’s birthday party. She had met Daniel before as she was operating her friend’s boutique and there was an attraction there at the party between the two. Now she must decide how and if she should tell Daniel he is going to be a father. Daniel had lost his wife and baby to be in a car accident and she does not know how he will feel about the news that she is now pregnant. He cannot get her off his mind and keeps trying to contact her to no avail as she keeps avoiding him. When she does tell him he wants marriage but without love she has a hard time accepting it. He feels the marriage is something that must happen so that the baby is protected and cared for in the way he can provide. They find out together that the baby is not just one but twins. Daniel and Mary-Jane spend most of the time not getting along. He tries to do nice things and she is worried he will take the babies. They just cannot agree. This book is a must read. This story is about what the consequences can be of one night. It is another book that you fight to put this down cause you want to keep reading and find out what happens. It is perfect for day when nothing else is planned for the day.
Mary Jayne Preston is quite a firecracker. Even when extremely pregnant and in the worst predicament in which a woman can find herself, she has a cracking sense of humour that makes her a joy to read. The man who’s gotten her into this situation had better watch out!
Daniel Anderson suffered beyond anything anyone could imagine when he lost his wife and unborn child in an accident. But now that he has the feisty Mary Jayne in the family way, and a family is literally what she’s carrying, he has a second chance to have the love and the family of which he’d always dreamed. But Mary Jayne isn’t going to step into another woman’s shoes so easily.
She’s strong and gutsy and ready to take on the world as a single mom. And although Daniel’s a successful businessman and would make a great husband, she’s not sure if she can buckle down and settle for the white picket fence and the perfect family. She’s a free spirit indeed.
I enjoyed revisiting Crystal Point and catching up with what my favourite characters are doing. But be warned! This is not what you might call a predictable story.
So what’s it to be? Read and enjoy! This family story is lots of fun.
We revisit Crystal Point and find Mary-Jayne Preston attracted to widower Daniel Anderson a CEO of a large resort who spends most of his time traveling the world. One night of attraction between the two results in a pregnancy. He wants to marry her and especially when she finds out she is having twin boys. She gives him a difficult time because she doesn't believe a child is enough to make a happy marriage, and wants a man "in my heart, over my heart and on my heart forever". She gives Daniel a difficult time as she is so determined to have what she wants. The story has so many lovely moments and a few laughs when Daniel goes to the doctor with Mary Jayne and admits his fear of needles. An enjoyable book from page one and the characters are so wonderful you feel you are in crystal point with them. You can read this alone but Ms Lacey writes so wonderful you will want to read all of them and look for more. It has a HEA ending that makes you sigh.....
I loved reading this book. A story about a free spirit, independent woman, who falls for an uptight, and a bit controlling rich CEO. After one night the surprise of finding out that their one night together produced some surprising result was when the story really started. How do two people who come from different worlds find common ground....by looking at what's right in front of their eyes. That they have more in common than they thought......
A beautiful story about a man who thought he could never find love again and a woman who thought she could ever love an uptight man like him.
A one night stand leads to life changes for Daniel & Mary-Jayne. The road is not easy for these two, with the arrogant attitude of Daniel in his pursuit of M.J. & her less than stellar attitude towards Daniel they butt heads constantly. M.J. vows she won't be a pushover for Daniel & refuses his advances & marriage proposals, planning on raising her babies by herself. Daniel has a different outlook on what is going to happen & the fireworks that ensue are great.
"Lacey’s latest romance in Crystal Point, Australia, stars an oil-and-water couple who effectively use their battles to mask their relationship fears. Their powerful attraction is perfectly showcased, and their journey from loathing to love is delightful" (RT Book Reviews, 4 stars).
I love a story that moves along quickly. A story about two very stubborn characters. Mary Jayne becomes pregnant after a hot night with Daniel. Daniel wants more but Mary Jayne is not moving too quickly. A very fast read but loved it!!!
