FAILURE ISN'T AN OPTION FOR THIS NAVY SEAL IN JOANNA WAYNE'S LATEST BIG "D" DADS: THE DALTONS NOVEL
When Jade Dalton escapes a ruthless kidnapper on the trail of a multimillion-dollar necklace, she flees to the one place no one will find her: her estranged father's Texas ranch. Booker Knox is also on his way to Dry Gulch. After a potentially dangerous situation thrusts her into his arms, the navy SEAL appoints himself Jade's personal bodyguard.
It isn't every day Booker finds himself being kissed by a gorgeous stranger. Except Jade's a fugitive from justice who's also being hunted by a determined killer. Now Booker will do whatever it takes to protect the beautiful big-city event planner. Failure isn't an option. Neither is walking away when this is all over.
Joanna Wayne began her professional writing career with the release of her first novel, DEEP IN THE BAYOU, in 1994, but Joanna will be the first to tell you that the wheels were set in motion years before. She started reading at four years of age, the same age that she began making weekly trips to the library to check out as many books as they’d let her have, only to finish reading them all before bedtime. That love of books never waned.
Joanna was born and raised in Shreveport, Louisiana and was the middle child of a large family. She moved to New Orleans, Louisiana in 1984 when she married her current husband. New Orleans opened up a whole new realm of activities and she found the mix of cultures, music, history, food and sultry southern classics along with her love of reading a natural impetus for beginning her writing career. It was there that she attended her first writing class and joined her first professional writing organization. From that point on, there was no looking back.
Now, forty published books later, Joanna has made a name for herself as being on the cutting edge of romantic suspense in both series and mainstream novels. She is known for the suspense and emotion she brings to the page, as she takes ordinary people and thrusts them into life-and-death situations. She has been on the Walden Bestselling List for romance and won many industry awards. She is a popular speaker at writing organizations and local community functions and has taught creative writing at the University of New Orleans Metropolitan College.
She currently resides in a small community forty miles north of Houston, Texas with her husband. Though she still has many family and emotional ties to Louisiana, she loves living in the Lone Star state.
Good mix of romance and suspense. Jade is an event planner in New York and her latest job has been running a multi-city tour for a jewelry maker. On this night the man invites her to his suite before the show and shows her a beautiful necklace. They are interrupted by a delivery of champagne that turns out to be drugged. The next thing Jade knows, she's being held captive, the jeweler is dead and she's being blamed, and the kidnapper thinks she has hidden the necklace somewhere. She escapes the kidnapper, who is also a dirty cop, and unwilling to trust the police, heads to her father's ranch to regroup. On the way she meets Booker, who is also headed to the ranch, to meet the half sister he didn't know (she's married to one of Jade's brothers).
Booker's protective instincts are raised when Jade throws herself at him to escape the notice of those who may be looking for her. He doesn't know who she is at first, but once he hears her story he suspects that she's been set up. He's determined to keep her safe while the investigation goes on. It doesn't hurt that she's beautiful and the chemistry between them is pretty hot.
Jade is used to taking care of herself and not depending on anyone's help. Her mother is a bit of a drama queen and has been through multiple husbands. Her father, RJ, pretty much abandoned the family until recently, when he was diagnosed with a brain tumor. She's not inclined to forgive him, but she knows she will be able to hide out on the ranch for a couple days. She doesn't expect to find several of her half brothers there along with her father, or that all of them are determined to help her. She's not quite sure what to make of the previously unheard of family support.
I loved seeing Booker and Jade together. The attraction between them is strong, but neither is interested in a relationship. As a SEAL, Booker feels that he's a bad bet until he done with deployments, as constant separations are hard on relationships. He keeps his involvements light. Jade also avoids them as she hasn't had good examples and isn't ready to risk her heart yet. As they're thrown together Booker discovers that Jade is strong and independent, and she finds that it's comforting to be able to lean on someone else for a change. When all the fuss was over I loved the way they got to know each other while staying at the ranch. The ending was really sweet.
The suspense of the story was good. The big question was what had happened to the necklace. Jade's escape from the kidnapper was pretty intense. There was also her need to clear her name about the murder and theft. There were some pretty intense moments when Booker's bodyguard/SEAL abilities came in quite handy. Just when I thought that everything was over and done, a twist in who was after the necklace became apparent. That final confrontation was nerve wracking until it was all over.
I also enjoyed the continuing story of the reconciliation between RJ and his kids. I liked seeing RJ finding ways to help Jade through her trouble. She was pretty wary of all the family togetherness, but it was great to see the way her brothers stepped up to help. I'm looking forward to the next book.
I really enjoyed this fast moving intriguing story. Combining a Navy SEAL and a hot shot event planner, mix jewelry, mystery and greed into it at the start and you'll want to keep reading to find out what the heck happened. Lots of twists and turns to find the real killer at the very end. Want to read more.
Showdown At Shadow Junction by Joanna Wayne is a fabulous romantic suspense. Ms. Wayne has given readers a well-written book populated with an outstanding cast of characters. Jade is an event planner that didn't plan to be on the run to Dry Gulch and hunted. Booker's SEAL team is on a 30 day leave and he decides to visit his niece at Dry Gulch. Booker and Jade's story is packed with action, humor, spice and suspense. I enjoyed reading this book and look forward to reading more from Joanna Wayne in the future. This is a complete book, not a cliff-hanger.
I read a print copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Showdown at Shadow Junction 5 in series Big "D" Dads: The Dalton's by: Joanna Wayne is another great read. I know that this series is great. So far in all these books you become part of the Dalton's Family. This series puts you on The Dry Gulch Ranch were you part of this wonderful family. In book 5 it tells us about a daughter that really isn't part of this family but, that didn't matter she became a part and how this family and a sexy Navy Seal polls together to clear her name of murder and a staling high priced necklace.
I enjoyed this book. I couldn't put it down. I just had to know what happened. Jade wanted nothing to do with her father unless he could offer her some protection from things that happened in New York. Even while she was at his house she still didn't want anything to do with any of them. I can understand her reasoning though. She didn't seem like she even wanted to give any of them a chance. Not even her half brothers just because they found a way to forgive their father.
All in all it was a good book. Not much to really complain about. I really liked that Jade wasn't one of those girls that depends on a man for protection though. When it came to it she fought for her survival.
I love this series. Each book has action, suspense, and a touch of romance. Each book is also a stand alone, so it does not matter what order you read them. RJ has many kids, but he was never there as a father figure when the kids were little. Most of the kids have different mothers. When RJ was diagnosed with a brain tumor, he wanted to get to know each of his kids. He brought a group of strangers, that were family, together for the reading of his will. As the series continues, the bonds of the family are strengthening with time, and forgivingness. As time goes on, RJ and his love for his kids are pulling on my heart. You can't help but love the cantankerous old man.
In This story, Jade is a event planner in New York. Quaid Vaquero is a famous jewelry designer from Spain. He invited Jade to stop by his room the last night of the jewelry show. When she got there, he placed a beautiful breath taking necklace around her neck, to show her one of his favorite pieces. She about had a heart attack, when she found out the necklace was worth Two hundred twenty five million dollars. She encouraged Quaid to take it to the hotel security, and have it locked up. The next thing Jade knew was she sipped Champaign that had been drugged, Quaid was murdered, and a dirty cop from New York kidnapped her. She was wanted for murder. She did manage to break free, but she had to hide, to get away, to escape. She flew to Texas, to visit her dad. Once she landed at the airport, she ran into Booker Knox, a Navy seal. I loved the way the two first meet. Booker knew Jade needed a body guard, and he stepped up to offer the protection she needed. Hey I love books, with handsome, sexy as sin body guards. I also loved the way Jade's family stepped up to help her. When she first got to the ranch, it was like meeting a bunch of strangers, but throughout the book, those strangers became family. This was a fast paced, intense book, with lots of twist and turns. I loved it. The banter was good between Jade, and Booker making it a fun read.
I did however find a few sentences with missing words, that I think the editor missed.
Sample from chapter 7 - Booker stepped over and gave susie Q a good nose scratching and then ran a hand along her withers. She stood perfectly still. "Seems calm enough to me. I'll be right beside you and we won't go faster than a steady trot." "A slow trot, " Jade modified. "I'm a city girl. The most dangerous thing I ride is a New York taxi." Booker took the horses reins from Cornell. "Then you can survive anything." "I'll cast my vote on that when we get back." Another sample from Chapter 7 _ "You must already rue the day I kissed you in the airport, " Jade said. "I'm not sure. I can't remember much about it" He teased. "How about showing me what that was like again.?" "Maybe later, Booker Knox, if you behave yourself. And when it happens, I guarantee you that you will not forget it." "Then why wait?" "A second kiss should never be rushed."
Showdown At Shadow Junction by Joanna Wayne. Jade Dalton is a Events Planer. She is in the hotel with a jewelry designer when they both are drugged and the designer is killed. Jade is then kidnapped and taken to a old fishing cabin. She escapes and on her way to the Dalton family ranch. (This is one of The Big "D" Dads: The Daltons Series book". Which were all good books. I enjoyed them all. Jade gets off the plane in Texas, in her disguise, when two follow her. She goes around the corner and runs into Booker Knox and gives him a kiss. Wanting to fool the two guys following her. She ask him to play along. He does. Booker gives Jade a ride to the Dalton ranch. Come to find out Booker was going there anyway. His sister married a Dalton. Lots of intrigue. The bad guys are after Jade. Booker becomes her bodyguard. A must read.
"A perfect mixture of suspense and romance, Wayne’s latest is an engaging read with well-developed characters and a riveting fugitive storyline. There’s a nicely played twist readers won’t see coming until the last moment" (RT Book Reviews, 4 stars).
