Andre Norton

Andre Norton, born Alice Mary Norton, was a pioneering American author of science fiction and fantasy, widely regarded as the Grande Dame of those genres. She also wrote historical and contemporary fiction, publishing under the pen names Andre Alice Norton, Andrew North, and Allen Weston. She launched her career in 1934 with The Prince Commands, adopting the name “Andre” to appeal to a male readership. After working for the Cleveland Library System and the Library of Congress, she began publishing science fiction under “Andrew North” and fantasy under her own name. She became a full-time writer in 1958 and was known for her prolific output, including Star Man’s Son, 2250 A.D. and Witch World, the latter spawning a long-running series and shared universe. Norton was a founding member of the Swordsmen and Sorcerers' Guild of America and authored Quag Keep, the first novel based on the Dungeons & Dragons game. She influenced generations of writers, including Lois McMaster Bujold and Mercedes Lackey. Among her many honors were being the first woman named Gandalf Grand Master of Fantasy and SFWA Grand Master. In her later years, she established the High Hallack Library to support research in genre fiction. Her legacy continues with the Andre Norton Award for young adult science fiction and fantasy.

No audio links

Promises links to "some" audiobooks but there are none. Hodgepodge of books in different genres without completing series.

The stories are quit good especially if you take the date of publishing into account having said that I would like to see the unique/made up words explained a bit more so I at least know what they mean instead of having to guess.

A very mixed bag of stories.

I had read a large number of Andre Norton's sci-fi as a teenager, I enjoyed renewing the pleasure of her work. The other stories, the Westerns and the mystery were a nice surprise. Good reads.

Well written, enthralling, compelling stories.
One of my favorite authors since I was a scamp!
Some I've come back to to finish, and some I'd forgotten.

Early young adult and regular science fiction from the 1960s. I’m not sure if teens would enjoy these stories now but I certainly loved rereading them.

I recommend this anthology highly.

Lots of story for the money

A Dandy collection of stories. Pleasant and straightforward storytelling. Characters with character. A nice blend of genre. A few laughs and a few tears.

Review “Andre Norton: The Essential Collection”

It had been a long while since I’ve read Andre Norton, so I was pleased to find this broad compilation of short stories and novels.

Of course, Ms. Norton was a prolific and successful author from the Golden Age of Sci-Fi Fiction, and certainly a trailblazer for women authors of the genre.

Overall, the stories in this collection are entertaining and particularly suited for younger readers. Except for a few forays into historical fiction, Ms. Norton’s tales steer much closer to fantasy than actual science fiction—in my opinion.

Just a couple of mild critiques… Ms. Norton subjected many of her characters to repetitive evade, capture, and escape scenarios. Personally, I prefer protagonists exert more influence over their destinies and keep superfluous dialog to a minimum as tense situations unfold. Additionally, except for interstellar space travel and alien contacts, Ms. Norton’s imagined technologies of the future are rather quaint compared with today’s computing and global networking technologies.

Anyhow, it was nice to revisit these stories.

For anyone interested in 20th century science fiction, this collection is important to own. You likely won't find many of these Andre Norton books in print anywhere else. You might want to read the novels sporadically, though, as this is a lot of (mostly) early Norton. The stories are uneven in quality, but there are some series represented here that I found to be as good as her Witch World books. Like every important writer, Norton grows better as she produces more books.

There were some seriously distracting typos and distracting juxtapositions that speak of little or no editing. It might put you off, unless you are a real collector.

I can't speak to those of her historical novels in this super pack, since I don't find them as interesting a genre as her fantasy, and haven't read them yet.

Alice May! One of the best

While much of her work is very dated now, most lovers of Science Fiction will thoroughly love the stories in this Super Pack. Her protagonist & antagonist are strongly built characters as are the worlds the inhabit or visit. And while her descriptions of our galaxy are often colored by past misconceptions they're easily overlooked by the strength of worlds & people now unknown.

Many hours of delightful entertainment

I've been an avid fan of Andre Norton for decades and have twice set out to collect a copy of all her writings. Sadly I lost both incomplete collections so I'm reading them electronically. This collection has "new to me" in it and I am thrilled!!!!
