Sins of September

Rate this book
September Dawson is not quite fourteen when her mother takes off, leaving her and her four-year old half-sister Scout, under the care of Jesse Ryan, her much younger husband, and September's step-father.

Shortly afterwards, September is sent to live with her maternal grandparents in Mississippi. Four years pass before she returns to Arkansas, at the request of her step-father, to take care of her younger sister for the summer. It's the summer going into her senior year, and September becomes not only a mother-figure to Scout, but a slow spark ignites between her and Jesse. September is all about fanning the flame; Jesse, however, is all about denial.

This novel is not about taboo sex; this story deals with what some may consider taboo love. September is not the 'vestal virgin' being seduced by a man nearly twelve years her senior the summer of 2010. In fact, September has a bit of a sneaky side when it comes to getting noticed, but in the process, she learns about the man she's come to admire and love, and gets some well-needed lessons about honesty, maturity and sacrifice. "Sins of September" is more than a coming-of-age story. It deals with the complications of life; the reality of abandonment, and the drama and suffering that ensues when others want what you have, and the extent they will go to in order to destroy it. UPDATE MARCH 22, 2015: I HAVE NEWS. PLEASE SCROLL DOWN TO THE END OF MY REVIEW.

1 star. DNF @51 %. Review posted November 6, 2014. The author accused me of bullying.

Casey is a conniving bitch??

Dear September,

I guess you know the saying "It takes one to know one."

Author Graysen Blue offered me an ARC and I did accept due to the premise of the book. Fact is, younger heroine older hero is one of my favorite tropes. Unfortunately the book is a major failure. The author sent me a PM, telling me how disappointed she is that I had to, I quote, “…to make fun of the book with pictures and GIFS – I mean what’s the point of all of that? Is that common on Goodreads? Is it something that a lot of reviewers do to make authors feel badly? I would prefer it if you just didn’t finish and 1-starred it versus making fun of it. I’ve never done that on a review…ever.” BTW, I did not respond to her PM.
Shortly afterwards the author posted a blog accusing me of bullying which she deleted again. I'm glad that I took a screenshot, though. She even added the link to my review. That's what she wrote (you can enlarge the pic to read it):

 photo Bildschirmfoto2014-11-04um164402_zps956e9e6c.png

Let's be clear here. Posting a couple snarky gifs is not bullying.

I still believe that authors who can’t handle negativity or snark should stay away from reviews. And what’s the point in offering ARCs when you can’t handle bad reviews? If the author had taken the time to check out my profile thoroughly, then she would have known that I don’t hand out five-star ratings on a daily basis. As a matter of fact, I rate and review bad books (as well as great ones) uncompromisingly and an author has to earn a five-star rating from me. And by earning I mean writing an outstanding book. Period.

I will refrain from reviewing Sins of September extensively. And, to be very straightforward, the writing itself took care of making fun of the book because the “quotes” speak more than 1000 words. They are horribly bad. Besides, the eighteen-year-old "heroine" is a dumb, immature, conniving and insincere bitch and the "hero" who's pushing thirty isn't anything to write home about either.

The writing is extremely amateurish. Here are examples for your perusal:

Yeah, if you're going to say it again I will scream. I'm in awe of your foolishness. What an immature and annoying twat.

"Fuck," he growls, "Can you feel that?"
"I can," she gasps "Even with the rubber, I can feel you pulse into me, baby."

I've developed this major crush on Jesse--I mean are you surprised? It's pretty damn obvious, isn't it? But it's not an adolescent crush like what I first had on Todd. There's a sexual edge to this one and that's totally on me--not Jesse. He's never been anything but fatherly to me and that part sucks no doubt. It only means that I've got my work cut out for me.

He's staring a blazing hole through me now. I mean it's a burning gaze.

This is gonna be a piece of cake. I'm thinking he might need to gore me with that needle-dick of his a few rounds before he totally

I can feel the tip of his penis poking around my slit and for some odd reason, I feel a sudden urge to burst out laughing at how totally ridiculous this must look to the ceiling and walls of this hotel room. God knows, they've had to have seen better.

God knows I've read better books. Jesus Christ on a crutch.

These are excerpts of their first sex scene:

„What would you know about love—or life or any of it?“
“Maybe more than you think,” I reply softly, looking up at his beautiful, angry face, meeting his cool gaze with one of my own. Our conflicted eyes lock, and when they do, something passes between us; like a spark or something and all I can think is that it’s about damn time.

(…)

He captures my mouth with his roughly--almost savagely, but I don’t care. “Fuck you look so much like her,” he growls, “I need to see if you taste like her too.”
“Do it,” I dare.

(…)

I want to feel the cock that I watched thrusting in and out of Casey when he was taking her from behind; the same cock that used to make my mother mewl like some sort of pleasured animal within the confines of their bedroom.

(…)

He moves to me and I instinctively raise my arms up so that he can relieve me of my top. I hadn’t bothered with a bra so my breasts are bare and he’s perusing them appreciatively. With his gaze lingering on every inch of my heaving breasts, I watch, totally mesmerized as his hands make their way to the under swell of my tits.

(…)

Leaning back on my arms, my gaze never wavers from his gorgeous face as I lift my hips, my body language begging for him to relieve me of my jeans.
That simple gesture is all it takes for him to shed his last ounce of resistance, as his tongue washes over his bottom lip, and he quickly and expertly makes history of the rest of my clothes.

Baba made history of the book too.

(…)

“You taste even better than her.”
(he means her mother)
And that makes me happier than I ever thought possible.

(…)

Here is my personal favorite…I guess this goes way back to the Stone Age. Rawwwwwwrrrrr:

“God, Jesse…please don’t stop!” I can barely recognize my own voice and I realize that he alone has made me a woman this night. He alone has wrecked me for any other male on this earth. It’s primal and it’s meant to be because the chemistry is just that epic.
My words clearly set off some sort of primal need buried deeply inside of him. Maybe he feels the same connection I’m feeling. Our chemistry boils through our veins as if it’s been there for generations; existing in previous generations, other cultures from long ago and in former couplings of perfect mates. That is us. This is ours.

(…)

Letting my head fall back on the table, I groan when I feel the thump against the hard surface. Between the heavenly feeling between my legs, the sound of our lust echoing off the walls and the scent of our combined sexual tension enveloping us in our own private cocoon, I can feel myself drifting into another sphere.

(…)

Then, it’s like he’s somehow hit the detonator of some massive orgasm that I didn’t know existed—and maybe it doesn’t exist for anyone else but us, but I can’t help but scream his name as powerful waves of pleasure explode, one right after the other, penetrating every nerve ending, muscle and cell of my body.
Trembling, I feel his finger sliding out of me as his tongue is thoroughly lapping up every drop of this liquid release of mine. Spasms are still rocking my body as I slowly come down from the most beautiful and mind-fucking-boggling experience of my life.

I nod, my voice is thick with need as I answer him, “Yes, Jesse.”
He doesn’t need the humiliating details.
“I need a condom,” he says, (…)
“No,” I say getting my voice back. “I took the birth control shot.
I lie because there’s no way in hell that this is not going to happen right now between us. Hell, I’d gladly have as many babies as he saw fit to give me, because he’s mine.

(…)

The pain lasts for a couple of more thrusts and then my sex does what it’s supposed to do: it welcomes Jesse. I’m so wet for him now, and I’m not sure how much but I wrap my legs around his hips tightly.

He backs out and slams in again, faster, harder, deeper and I moan his name over and over again. His mouth has lowered to mine and his tongue mates with my tongue as his cock is pleasuring my pussy in ways I never dreamed possible.
"That's it baby," he croons as my hips buck up against him and my moans become feral as every primal instinct in me responds to his mating.
This is my cock--my Jesse. He belongs to me--not Casey and not Mama--only me. (…)

Jesse stills and I can feel the throbbing of his cock inside of me as he empties his seed into my fertile womb, over and over until with one final shudder, he's finished.

I think I'm finished too. Oh, wait, I'm not quite done yet...

*******************************

I leave the room all the while knowing that his eyes are piercing a hole through my backside. I feel a smile play on my lips as I close the door with a slight slam so that he realizes the depth of my irritation at being treated as an adolescent and not the woman that I've become.

Er…she became a woman?? This must be a bad joke.

He takes my hand and leads it down to his hard-muscled erection, and then places my hand on it, his hand leaving mine.

Just an important little detail…a dick is not a muscle. It's a corpus cavernosum.

A good friend of mine said:
LOL! Imagine how many times men would flex it if it were a muscle?

Read at your own risk.

That is all. Onwards...

**Review request of author Graysen Blue**

UPDATE MARCH 22, 2015:

Last autumn, author Graysen Blue sent me a PM, asking me to review her debut Sins of September. I accepted her offer because I love the student/teacher trope and the age gap between two main characters is something I find intriguing. I read the book and didn't like it and, of course, I said so in my review. Then the shocker. Author Graysen Blue accused me of bullying which I found ridiculous. After all, I did review a book, a product, and not the author. Maybe it's time to start reviewing authors? Because here is the real shocker. When I talked with a couple friends about what happened to me, they told me that Blue's behavior was similar to Andrea Smith's. They told me that Graysen Blue might be Smith's pen name. Can you believe this? I was so friggin' clueless when I accepted her ARC. I reviewed Smith's
Diamond Girl back in 2013, didn't like it and decided to not read anything else by this author. EVER. Then she has the audacity to contact me under a pen name, WITHOUT MY KNOWLEDGE OF WHO SHE REALLY WAS AND BAITING ME INTO READING THAT BOOK. If I had known that Blue is Smith, I would never have read Sins of September. And now a new cover is up on Amazon, revealing that, in fact, she is writing under her pen name Graysen Blue.

What is this for fuck's sake? MINDGAMES? Do you really think this is funny? What do you want from me? If you want me to cut and run then think again. I'm still here. I'm still reading and reviewing and I don't want to read your books. What did I do that you hate me so much? Why do you have an unhealthy fixation on me? Frankly, this is some kind of obsessive behavior which I find highly disturbing.

(cause sometimes I'm nice, I don't want to hear anything Soph >.>)

**This review possibly contains spoilers**

I love age diferrence stories. Especially ones with a younger heroine and an older hero. So when I read the blurb, I was SOLD! This was right up my alley.
Unfortunately this didn't work for me, for many, MANY reasons.

The heroine was so immature and a manipulative bitch!

I really didn't see what Jesse saw in her except that he wanted to fuck her because she looks like her mother, the only woman he ever loved.

Fuck! Really? I mean no just fuck no.

But oh, they fell in love.

AND THE WHOLE FUCKING COMMUNITY FINDS OUT THEY'RE FUCKING.
.... and nobody gives a fuck.

They just talk and laugh about it like it's the most normal thing in the world, him having sex with his step-daughter.

Then the mom comes back, things get complicated (if it can get more than that) and it ends. It fucking ends with a note from the author saying that she didn't want to finish it if she wasn't sure that we're gonna like the book and there's not gonna be a sequel if it doesn't get good reviews.

Well-fucking-done! That pissed me off so bad!

Even if she writes the sequel, I don't think I'll ever pick it up.

Reread 2020 - 3 stars

So I'll just say quickly that I don't agree with or support authors bullying reviewers (or reviewers abusing authors), I think that if you can't take criticism then you shouldn't put your work out there and open yourself up to it. If we all agreed or liked the same things then life would be boring.

Anyway that was far too series for my liking, lets talk about slightly inappropriate things.

It's really no secret that I like naughty stories were heroines fall for their friend's Dad's or their own ex/current step-dads. That's exactly what appealed to me about this story. What can I say, I'm a dirty perv - but a romantic one, because this story has an actual plot.

While I enjoyed most of this book, there were parts were the dialogue seemed a bit forced and September came across a bit too immature. It could also do with an edit. It didn't take anything away from the story, it was just a little distracting at points. Aside from those small niggles, it was decent with some pretty hot sex scenes and a bit of angst. I'd recommend it if you're not bothered about other woman/man drama.

This is where I'd normally write my review. But, I have to say I am utterly shocked by the authors note at the end of this book. Really, you are going to wait to decide if you are going to write the continuation of this book based on how many people like it? Then, if enough people like it, you have asked for ideas of how this story should go? You don't have a vision for where you want your book to go? So now, I not only bought it, but I have to give you ideas on how to write the next one??? I have to say that not only am I appalled, but this makes me furious. Are you a serious author, or is this just a hobby? Really, I'd like to know. I wouldn't have wasted my money nor my time reading this book for it to end on a MAJOR cliffhanger just on the whim that you MIGHT write the ending. (depending on how many people like it) If that is the case, could you not have given the entire story? You are allowing nay-sayers to dictate what, if, when you write??!!!! Sadly, this ruined the book for me. I am thinking of IM'ing you with my address so you can refund me my money, I didn't know peer pressure was a factor in my reading experience. Now on to my review: Sins of September definitely had an "ick" factor. The romance was between stepfather/stepdaughter. Surprisingly the book was good. It had a darkness to it that permeated on every page.
I didn't like September until almost the end. The author did a good job of maturing her through out the story, and this added to the credibility of Septembers character. I liked Jesse. I liked how he wasn't after September until years later, and even then he had her best interests at heart. Did this book have some problems? Yes, I absolutely did not like the flashback scene at around 90% that September had, I do not want to read about Jesse and Libby. Since the author asked I would like to see Jesse fight for September. Ms. Blue also asked if we wanted September and Jesse together? Uh, yes...that is why most people read romance, so the main H/h can get together at the end?!! I would have rated this book higher, but like I have stated, I am flabbergasted by this authors need for acceptance. Not every one will like every book.

****4.5 September and Jesse loving stars****

If you're looking for your next read that has angst, mystery, drama, love, sex and isn't your run of the mill Erotica this is the next must read for you.

The YA/NA category for this Novel is perfect, but don't let that fool you.

September is a beautiful, smart, teenager ready to experience exactly what being a woman means.
Having had her life torn to shreds when she was young and having the opportunity to be right back where she belongs, she takes that chance and finds herself wanting her desires to be filled.
This character brings back memories of high-school....
All the thoughts of where do I fit in? Who can I trust? Who can I talk to? What is it like to be desired? What did I do wrong?
The need to fall back on girlfriends and not knowing how...
The deceit, sneaking out, sneaking around, becoming comfortable with your body, flirting, and falling in love.....

Jesse, September's Step-dad (don't let that term get to you) is a hard working man, who is learning not only how to love someone again at 30, but also what trust is.

At first when reading this novel I was a little annoyed by how the main character spoke especially with the "hee hees"
but I kept telling myself that she was young and shit, I remember talking like she did when I was that young.

In youth we learn, in age we understand.- Marie von Ebner-Eschenbach

I kept going with this novel because it truly was well written, I was looking for something different and the author didn't disappoint.

From the love triangles, to nosey neighbors, to Septembers friends, Grandparents, her Mother and her half sister I wanted to know more about each and everyone of the characters.
It was so intriguing to learn about their secrets, their pasts and not knowing what the future holds.

These two characters have no idea the fate the stars have aligned for them nor what trials they will be facing together or apart.

Delay is the deadlinest form of denial- C.Northcote Parkinson

This novel will take you by surprise and have you begging for the next installment as soon as you're done reading it.

The ending had me on the edge of my seat, my mind reeling and my heart in tatters as I waited to see where this rollercoaster ride took Jesse and September.
I have so many thoughts. So many unanswered questions. And now i'm letting all my feelings and thoughts take-over....

I can't wait to find out what happens with this couple and look forward to following their story.

Love can be found in the most absurd places, it can take you by surprise, it can be with the one person you never thought it would be with, and this couple is just one of the millions that experienced love, lust and raw emotion in the one place they never even thought of it happening..... With eachother.

I am thankful for the opportunity to read this novel for an honest review and plan on updating it with teasers I've made :)

September was just a kid when her mother skips town. Leaving her to tell her step-father Jesse that she’s not coming back. But now September is seventeen and is going to spend the summer with him and her half-sister, Scout.

September’s seduction of Jesse begins slowly, manipulating those around her to get what she wants. Jesse isn’t that much older than her and as she turns eighteen it is getting harder for him to look past the woman that she’s become. Spending the summer playing house has allowed the attraction to bubble to the surface as this taboo relationship begins.
Typically I am not a fan of books that include any kind of romance when there are family ties involved. But there was something intriguing about this particular story that had me ready to give it a chance. Maybe it was the whole Lolita vibe of September seducing her step-father or just the idea of the slight May-December relationship and watching Jesse battle his attraction to the woman that he never should have pictured in a sexual way. This story was all kinds of wrong, but at the same time it was just right.

The downside to this read for me was the ending. I don’t mind the occasional cliffhanger ending or even the wait for part two... the anticipation of the conclusion can often times add to the story as a whole.

In the end, I was surprised as to how I felt about this story. Although I wasn’t absolutely in love with it, I liked it and found that I enjoyed the game that September played in getting what she wanted. I look forward to the conclusion of their story with When September Ends and hope that we don’t have long to wait.

Just finished the book and I'm still trying to gather my feelings about this.
No... it doesn't shock me at all the relationship between stepfather and stepdaughter, but its not a easy one to get through, specially when you have a child like Scout around, but I guess everything could workout well.

I wont make a resume of the book, I usually don't do that because of all the spoilers that come around, so I will just say that I liked this story! Its different, its well written, its taboo, its sexy and have a lot of steamy scenes and good ones ;) also makes you think what would you do if it were you!
The end... oh well... I really hope this is not the END because I would hate to know that Jesse's and September's love story will end like this!
So please... please bring #2!!

I really loved this book. I know some people may have issues with the relationship between Jesse and September, but to me it's about two people falling in love despite what people may think is wrong. The heart wants what the heart wants and why deny it. The author told the story in such a way that you can't help but to root for them to be together. It is emotional and very steamy. I sincerely hope we have a second book to see where their love story goes. There is so much more i would love to say, but I can't without giving stuff away and will not do that. I think people should take the chance and read this book and discover what love is really all about.

Ok so I wasn't sure what to think going into this book. I mean really step-daddy and his daughter? Yes they aren't blood but it just didn't seem right. Well, as I started reading and seeing everything that goes on with September I began to have my eyes open. As you get older the age difference really doesn't matter.
September is a girl that ends up growing up really fast. Her mother needs to be locked up in a padded room and let for what she did and her parents need to stop babying her and understand that she is a grown woman and f'ed up. But September is also a sneaky little thing. At one point in the book I wanted to smack her hard in the back of the head. But I did come to really care for her. She became a great care giver to her little sister and Jesse when she could have just been a teenage girl and been out having fun.
Jesse, my goodness he will make your panties melt. He is just some kind of yummy and I would do whatever it took to get into his bed too. He does need to sit down and really think about how old September is and the fact that she doesn't always get what is going on with him. He needs to sit down with her and make sure she KNOWS how he is feeling when everything gets crazy.
If you want a book that is a little different please take a chance on this one. It will really keep you turning pages nonstop till you are at the end. To me this was a book I went form not too sure if I would like it to loving it and wanting the next book now. Great job on this Graysen!!!!

I can't resist these forbidden love stories where our couple is sneaking around and secretly lusting after one another and this one delivered on the smut very nicely. For a story like this to really drag me in though, I need the feels - the emotional connection between the characters - and I didn't really get that from this story I'm afraid.

September goes to live with her stepfather and half sister just before her eighteenth birthday. She's always had a - ahem - soft spot for for her stepfather, Jesse, but after a few years apart, seems Jesse has something of a not so soft spot for his nubile young charge too. Now that has the potential to get a bit icky, but at the same time, it's that forbidden element that makes it all so deliciously bad. The smut was sizzling hot for the most part, but some of the dirty talk was, I'm afraid, on the icky side - like going in for the first kiss while telling her he wants to know if she tastes like her mom...Seriously killed that first scene for me; even removing the small detail that you're shagging the same man your mom used to shag, nobody needs to hear about previous conquests at that critical stage.

That said, I enjoyed this, it flowed well and September herself was an interesting character, at first manipulative and sly, then later becoming more emotionally selfless, thinking about her sister before herself. She grows and matures through the narrative and at times, seemed to be the more grownup one in the relationship. I didn't get the same sense of character development from Jesse though and I'm not sure I ever got to know him. I just wasn't convinced he saw September as anything more than a hot and convenient lay, which rather put a dampener on the emotional feels for me.

It ends on a cliffhanger which I knew about going into this, but the second, (final), part is out now. I had to know how their story ended so I one clicked that sequel the moment I finished.

If you're looking for deep emotional connection and something that will make you ponder the ethics of familial relationships then this is unlikely to hit the spot, but as a naughty taboo read, it's definitely worth a look.

10 Wonderful Stars but 5 on here

This book was given to me for my honest review.

We all have heard one time or another about Adam and Eve and the forbidden fruit as we know from the scriptures is the Apple but is that really the forbidden fruit? Can the proverbial forbidden fruit not be any kind of fruit or anything really? What is forbidden can just be the one thing we crave the most? Hmm like blueberries on a cold winter’s day cause of the succulent taste that we associate with the summer months?

September-young, sweet, outspoken and fearless at times

Scout-September’s younger sister

Jessie-handsome, hunky and reserved

Jessie and September’s journey is complicated, sophisticated, loving but hidden. The past is something that this couple must conqueror before they can move on? Can they defy the odds of the unknown and the judgments that are sure to follow to be one or will the forbidden fruit not be allowed to be eaten? Can the heat that they both possess for one another in the bedroom carry onto the world outside? Can this couple take the leap and be one? Can Jessie see that the future is in front of him and put the past securely behind him and let his heart soar to higher elevations? Can September trust Jessie’s heart enough to stay or will she run away?

What about Scout does she see what Jessie and September do not and can she help this journey or hurt the newfound love?

To the author: You have taken this reviewer to new heights. This book that you have written is more than just a book. To some it is a reality that you unleashed and soared with. Writing outside the proverbial box is such an overwhelming achievement that you have major kudos. I hope your readers enjoy this book as much as I did.

To the readers: Please keep an open mind when reading this book. You will be very surprised in the end just as I was.

Wow - this book just stirred so many different emotions in me; I felt myself gasping in outrage one minute and crying in sympathy the next. Until September - definitely a book of epic taboo proportions for me, but also the story about how true love comes in many different shapes. Something you believe is wrong is someone else's right. Regardless of what you think, you cannot discount the love between our H and h and how it has matured into something absolutely beautiful. I went into this book thinking one thing and came out feeling completely different, which was a very good thing for me. I am heartbroken for the h and now understand her reasoning in why she did the crazy and manipulative things that she did, but am hoping that she eventually gets her happily ever after or, at the very least, her happy. Although Ms. Smith leaves us on a cliffhanger, it isn't a bad one, but one that will keep you intrigued with the book until you read book 2. Andrea has sucked me in with this book and left me wanting more. I can't wait to see where she takes this story - she has made a believer out of me!

The story is well written and the characters are fully fleshed out. The subject matter was a bit taboo but the way it was written you can understand how two people can find love in this situation. But, to me the chemistry just wasn't strong enough between September and Jesse, something was lacking. And I had a hard time with the main character, September, she was so conniving and dishonest I had no sympathy for her. And Jesse seemed a bit too naive to me, for being the older one in the relationship he didn't seem to know what was really going on. But, as I said it was very well written and I liked that the author took a risk on a sensitive subject. I was gifted a copy of this book in return for an honest review.

Tastefully written romance ❤️🔥

I enjoyed this book sooo much! It’s a page turner and filled with so many emotions and drama.
Libby is September and Scout’s mother, she is married to Jesse who is Scout’s father. Libby is so dysfunctional and takes off . Unfortunately for September, Jesse leaves and takes Scout.
A few years later September goes for the summer to see Scout. September is very beautiful and almost 18 years old. She’s developed a crush on 29 year old Jesse.
There’s so much more that goes on in this book, it’s emotional, drama filled and a must read! Andrea Smith is a very talented author! This is a beautiful romance that sizzles 🔥 and ends with a cliffhanger. I cannot wait to start the next book 😍

September is not the normal teenage girl she comes from a tattered past but is not afraid of the unknown or is she? Family is the key to her survival but when an unexpected event takes her from what she has known can family still be the key and who owns the lock? The proverbial forbidden fruit keeps her going in times of despair but what is this fruit? Is it a man or an event, is it in her past or can it be in future as well? Will time heal all wounds?

Jessie is a man that is handsome but scared, knowledgeable and trustworthy and clueless at times. He has been hurt by the one person that still holds his heart but can he get past the hurt and see that there is a bright future in the current and stop living in the past? Forge onto the here and now forsaking what others think and let his heart heal and lead him down a new path of life? Or will he be so clueless and let it slip away before even trying to keep it?

Jessie and September’s journey is complicated, sophisticated, loving but hidden. The past is something that this couple must conqueror before they can move on. A really great read! I was glad I was offered the chance to read this one. I was a little skeptical when I first started this book. When you think of a step-dad….. Right away my own mind goes to “old man”…. But this isn’t the case at all! We get a glimpse of the past when September was a pre-teen. Her mom was a bit of a wild one. Not really knowing her own dad, September took to Jesse her mom’s new husband with no problems. Jesse being a bit younger than her own mom Libby, was a great step dad to September and her little sister Scout. Libby had some issues. She up and left one day leaving September to care for her younger sister Scout! Jesse returns home from work to find her gone. Not sure how to handle a 4 year old or a 14 year old, he sends September to live with her grandparents. September returns 4 years later to watch Scout over the summer for Jesse. He has kept his life going and has even moved out of the run down trailer and bought a house. But what Jesse hasn’t really realized is that September has grown into a very beautiful young lady… or does he notice? September isn’t quite as innocent as she seems. She is quite the snarky little conniving thing. She does have a great heart though and is only looking out for the best interest of Jesse and her sister Scout. When word arrives of a new finding Jesse and September go their own ways…. The end of the book had me wanting more… I just couldn’t see this as the end of the both of them. I grew to love them both together as well. Given their age, I don’t see it as an issue as September is wise beyond her years. I can’t wait to read more of them!!!! Thank you for the opportunity Greyson!

September Dawson was in her early teens when her irresponsible mother took off, leaving September, and her 4 year-old half-sister, and her stepfather to fend for themselves. Her step-dad, Jesse was younger than her mother, so only eleven years older than September.
Shortly after her mother left, September was sent to live with her grandparents in another state. She was crushed.

Fast forward four years. Jesse wants September to spend the summer with he and Scout (the half-sister) while he works long hours. September develops a crush, and yes, she is a bit sneaky and conniving I must say, but there's almost something about it that makes you want to root for her. The reader learns that September has been harboring feelings for Jesse since before her mother left. She had not even come to terms with it.

I won't say more expect this was a gripping, sometimes heart-breaking story of a girl, confused by many things, coming of age, and in the process, becoming a woman: Jesse's woman.
But when her mom surfaces, what will happen then?

Read this book!! You won't be disappointed.

If you loved "Unteachable" by Leah Raeder, you will love "Sins of September."

I thoroughly enjoyed this book, and rated it a 4 star read for me the only reason it didn't get a 5 was because it was a cliffhanger Grr !!
The taboo relationship between Jesse and September is nothing new to me has I've had a friend to the same and also one of my sister friend did it too , and well there nothing wrong in my eyes really ,

you must be twisted to write that. It does not matter that he is older, but he is her stepfather and her sister's father... In a country where cousins are not allowed to marry? With such language? it is porn for teenagers or young adults, and therefore disgusting. I must add that I find unbelievable that the author writes a review as if she was just a reader ( with 5 stars, of course, and "hoping there will be a follow-up"). If the only reason for not having sex with your father or brothers is the fear to have abnormal kids due to inbreeding, then take the pill, and you are free to do what you want. There is something deeply unsettling in this book, something sick behind it. Add that things pretending to be something else disturb me. It is not a love story, it wants to be pure sex. It is not taboo with older men but it is totally with your family.

I was lucky enough to receive an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.

From the very first page to the very last, Andrea Smith has written a story that you will not want to put down. This author has written a story about a taboo love that is intriguing and keeps you interested. She has the ability to let her readers experience the journey of her characters right along with them. Her characters aren't just characters, they are people; people who have real feelings, real struggles, and real strengths. Until September is a beautiful and emotional story about broken, flawed people and forbidden love.

Sins of September (September #1) & When September Ends (September #2) by Andrea Smith writing as Graysen Blue
3.5 stars!!

“...the truth is she is mine. I’ve claimed her; I’ve marked her, hell I’ve fuckin’ imprinted on her if you want to know the truth. September does belong to me, in every possible way.”

This is one of those series that is hard to review, the subject matter is not for everyone but personally I felt the way that the story was delivered was not on the gross side of uncomfortable, it was honest and a situation that I can see many families finds themselves in. There were a few lines that had my stomach churning and I felt should have been left out, but other than that I really enjoyed this series.

September had to grow up fast. Her real dad had never really been on the scene and September’s mum had married a man a lot younger when September was 5, his name was Jesse and they eventually had a daughter too. September’s mum was a waste of space and oxygen, she should never have been a parent, she was extremely selfish and this hit the extreme when she upped and left leaving September and her little sister with Jesse, she didn’t even have the guts to face Jesse herself, she left that to September too. They managed to cope for a while but it soon becomes clear that it is not working so Jesse leaves September with her maternal grandparents thinking it was for the best.

September felt as if she had been abandoned once again and herein lays the crux of her issues, everyone she has loved has left. September is a gifted student and as she hits her late teens the raging hormones take over and she develops into a beautiful young woman. As we grow older, we all develop fantasies of our ideal man and for September that man is Jesse. She idolises him, despite the feeling of abandonment and in her teenage brain she has him firmly set on a pedestal. They have kept in touch and she still sees him on and off with her sister and these feelings have only progressed and strengthened through the years.

“...but maybe someday he will finally see
How he broke my heart when he set me free...”

One summer when September is fast approaching eighteen, Jesse asks if she could come and look after her sister during the summer holidays as he will be working out of town for long stretches at a time. September jumps at the chance, not only to spend time with her sister but also to see the man that she loves and idolises. September throws herself into “wifely” duties, ensuring the house runs smoothly and everyone is happy and cared for and it is here that the lines begin to blur.

September could be as conniving as the best of them and she is no martyr by any stretch of the imagination, but she was fighting for what she wanted by any means necessary. Coming up against a neighbour that could be just as conniving certainly makes for interesting reading and also ups the ante in the anger stakes too. For a girl that was inexperienced she could certainly flirt and knew how to use her fine womanly attributes. September actually becomes the seductress and I felt she actually took advantage of the situation, she took the lead. Poor Jesse didn’t really know what had hit him, but it seemed he had the same attraction to her for quite a while too, so in essence they were both as bad as each other.

Yes, they are step-daughter and step-father, yes there is a bit of an age gap, but I read it the way the author intended, as a love story. We have the conflicted emotions, the rights and wrongs but the heart wants what the heart wants and when feelings and emotions are running high there is not much you can do about it. As they spent so much time apart, they didn’t have that close father/daughter bond so for me those boundaries hadn’t been crossed. Yes it is taboo, yes it is not the norm, but it can happen and it does happen.

“...I don’t want you with me if you can’t trust it too.”

There is a great plot running throughout both books, at times I was angry, at times I was sad, but the re-introduction of a certain character certainly brought a lot of anger back to the surface for me. This is where a new direction is taken and brings the story back full circle.

The grandparents I wanted to throttle, as I did the neighbour and the mother. Some choices are hard to stomach but I can see why they were made, but at the end you do see the grown up September where she makes choices for herself and no-one else.

For me I was glad that I read both books back to back, I felt the ending to book 2 was rushed and I didn’t feel completely satisfied at the end but loved the epilogue. I would also have loved a deeper character connection, while I felt it, I didn’t live it with them and at times I felt more lust than love, but overall I enjoyed their story and more importantly could empathise.

Sins of September...hmmm...how much to tell without giving away too much of the book.

This story throws you smack in the middle of September's screwed up childhood. Her mother is abandoning her, her half sister and husband for what I can only assume is another man...and doing so without remorse. Jesse(step-father) decide that since September will stay with her grandparents and he will keep his biological daughter, Scout. Several years later she goes to stay with Jesse for a summer to help out with her half sister. Which is definitely where the story takes a turn because September is older and is definitely lusting over her stepfather. She is determined to make him want her also.

Now this is where more than a little drama starts to unfold in this story. Yes, September and Jesse start a relationship but this story is soo much more than just they have sex it is hot and they live happily ever after.

When they come together and it is explosive every time...

"I want to feel the cock that watched I thrusting in and out of Casey when he was taking her from behind, the same cock that used to make my mother mewl like some sort of pleasured animal within the confines of their bedroom. I want that cock inside of me. I want him doing all of those delicious and forbidden things, only doing them to me this time"

But what do you do when you are in love with your stepfather? What are people going to say?

"What are we doing? Am I some twisted Lolita with daddy issues? Do I love Jesse because it's taboo and risky?"

There is a crap load of craziness with her mother pulling her disappearing act years earlier.

I honestly love a bit of a taboo story but if you are thinking to yourself I don't want to read it because of that trust me once you start reading it you are so engrossed into their craziness that their age difference and taboo relationship is an issue but not they way you would think.

Sins of September leaves you on a cliffhanger which honestly I was okay with because I felt like I needed to process what I read. I want them to have a hea but I am just not sure how that is going to happen.

I loved it and I am looking forward to the rest of September and Jesse's story.

*I received a free copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review*

I've heard some people saying negative things about how the author had written September's actions and the way she thinks/things she says. She is seventeen when the book begins! Plus, she had a very screwed up background.  Do you remember how you were at that age? I thought I knew everything there was to know about sex (I didn't). I would also assume I was very mature for my age then go on to do something extremely immature.  If you don't relate or think a teenager should automatically act like they're 20 something, then read a different book. Don't speak rudely of this one for being spot on.

Ok, so, I thought this was a great book. Although September did piss me off at times,  I understood her behavior. She is young.  Things don't make sense yet. She didn't have a good role model to teach her differently. I felt that I also would've wanted Jesse if I was her. He loved his wife and daughter. Was hot as hell.  Worked hard to get better things out of life.  When they finally get together it's both sexy and sweet.  Their sex scenes were seriously steamy!  I was dying to know if mama was going to come back or if she was dead.  I absolutely loved the epilogue,  where i was able to get a little insight into Jesse's mind. And i flew through this book because it was just that good!  This is author,  Graysen Blue's, debut novel.  It's a wonderful beginning and I plan to read everything else she writes.  Especially the SEQUEL that needs to come very soon!   Cliffhangers.  You love them, you hate them.  They always keep you coming back for more!
