*reviewing parts 1-4 as a complete book
At the time of requesting these titles from NetGalley, I didn’t realise Hunger’s Mate parts 1-4 combined made up book number 5 of the established series The Shadow Shifters. This being said, Hunger’s Mate can be read completely on it’s own, however reading the previous 4 books would give you a far better insight into this instalment.
This first part had so much info, and so many people coming into the story that I was completely lost for a bit as to who was who and what some of it had to do with the story. As I moved through the rest of the book it all began to make sense as I got a better understanding of the people & situation. This is where knowledge from the first 4 shadow shifter books would be advantageous.
I really like how this book is written in multiple POV’s, I like how it gives the reader insight into more than just the one character, and also into situations we’d otherwise be left guessing about. You get a much clearer picture of what’s going on this way.
Early on you work out that Jewel is on the run, eventually we learn who from & why, even if the horrid details are left somewhat vague, which I actually liked as you can fill in the blanks with whatever horrors your mind can handle.
Ezra is equally as troubled, but unlike Jewel, rather than running from his fears, he wants to face them head on & beat them. Instead of his fears, Ezra meets ADAM and “war” ensues.
A larger plan starts to emerge from the chaos that reaches far beyond Jewel. Throw in some kidnappings, some hero’s to save the day, and we get a somewhat happily ever after with just enough mystery thrown in to hook you into reading the next novel, set to be published later this year.
This book really has a bit of everything thrown in to satisfy everyone. If you like yourself some shape shifting cat men, give this series a try!

HUNGER'S MATE PART ONE begins a four-part serial which continues the saga of the Shadow Shifters, which began in the Damaged Hearts serial and continued in the Shifter's Claim serial. A. C. Arthur begins this new story with a glossary which is helpful especially to those who may not have read the two previous serials. The setting is our current-day world with the addition of the supernatural shape-shifters, species of man-cats who exist unbeknownst to nearly all humans and who have a fully-developed hierarchy of their own government/protective elite. Each shifter protagonist in these erotic romance stories finds his mate, whether she be shifter or human, against a plot wrought with danger, intrigue, and passion.
In part one, shifter Lead Guard Ezra Preston has come to Perryville due to the possibility that the government may have learned of the existence of the shifter race. He will perform a dangerous assignment at Comastaz Labs in order to ferret out a suspected government-backed plot to exploit shifter DNA. Ezra is confident and as cool as a cucumber in anxiety-provoking moments at the labs; he is completely unprepared, however, for Jewel Jenner, an administrator at the resort he's residing in who stirs feelings within him that throw him completely off balance and bring to the surface painful memories from his past. Ezra's past is just a dark memory, whereas Jewel's may cost her her life and more likely, her freedom.
Arthur weaves an interesting tale; she's skilled at backstory, helping the reader to understand and sympathize with her main characters. Another plus is the alternating points of view; we get to hear the story from both Jewel and Ezra's perspectives. It is also gratifying to be reunited with characters from Arthur's other serials. The story does suffer a bit due to its descriptive style. In scenes centering on the emotional struggles within her characters, flashbacks, and interpersonal conflicts, the writing is at its strongest, particularly in the verbal battles waged between Ezra and Jewel; though they are brief chats, they are witty and charming. The mechanics of the physical scenes, however, are less elegant; the descriptions of the physicality between Ezra and Jewel is not romantic or sensual, nor do their sexual encounters deliver the expected impact (perhaps due to many clichéd word choices during these moments), unlike the easy flow of other scenes. The conflict at the police station seems staged, awkward, and a bit confusing. In all, there is some choppiness in the descriptive narrative which led me to read through more quickly than I usually like to, slowing to absorb the more compelling scenes such as the flashbacks and emotional revelations. Arthur does pack a lot of action, physical and emotional, into these brief 95 pages, but that also may contribute to the choppy quality due to the minimal page count. It is challenging to set up the frame of the entire serial and still tell a story in a short first episode; considering this and the fact that Ezra and Jewel are promising characters whom I am interested in following, I am rating part one of this serial at four stars. Due to the world-building and shifter vocabulary, and the return of Bas and Priya, readers would benefit from first reading the Shifter's Claim serial, though it is not a must-do.
NOTE: THERE IS NO "PART 5"; IT'S A BUNDLE OF THE ENTIRE SERIAL: The covers of the four-part e-serial each state that Hunger's Mate is "a novel in four parts." Goodread's listing for Hunger's Mate Part 5 is actually the bundle pack of the original four-part serial in one title, either e-book or 352-page print paperback release. At this time, It does not state in the product information that there is any new material added to the bundle package title. It is confusing to see this title listed as "Part 5." The author's website clearly indicates that this Hunger's Mate title is simply the bundle of all previous four parts (not a new fifth part); the full print and e-book release will be available on the same date which the last (fourth) part of the e-serial is available---February 3, 2015.
Hunger’s Mate is a deliciously provocative edge-of-your-seat thriller that that is chock full of more heart and soul then you would ever think possible. Balance is key to living life, being successful, and ultimately experiencing peace and happiness, but what would you pay to obtain that balance? Would it be worth giving up the façade of control that you think you have over your life and your heart? What would convince you let go in order to be free of a horror that haunts you every second of your life? If gaining your freedom meant facing your demons heads on with no limitations and no boundaries, would you eagerly grab hold with both hands, or would you run away yet again and pray to hide for just a little longer? The hardest thing you will ever do is to stop, turn around, and fight. Running and escaping is easy, but when we do that, we willingly give all of our control over to another. When will you stop running and instead stand your ground and fight for what your heart wants? If you find something worth fighting for, never let it go.
Jewel Jenner lives a life that not her own. She lives each day heavily mired in routine and above all hates change. Listening to her heart is something that she has forgotten how to do, but her heart has not forgotten how to feel and what it wants. Wary of everyone, she keep her life small and guarded. She works hard and enjoys the life she has built, but she is about to learn that when you ignore your heart, you do it at your own demise. The moment Ezra Preston sees Jewel something instinctively deep inside shifts and he can do anything but stay away from her. Unable to explain or fully understand this strong pull to her, he nonetheless tries to get to know her. That, however; proves to be anything but an easy task. Caught up in a twisted hurricane that was her former life, Ezra and his friends are pulled under as they try to untangle the mystery that is Jewel Jenner in order to save their own lives and the fate of others. Will Jewel stop running and face a past she has tried to forget for so long? Can Ezra show her that she is so much stronger then she thinks she is, but in the process will he risk her disappearing from his life forever?
I must admit that I haven’t read very many books in the shifter genre, but I was very pleased with the sharp, intellectual plot that kept me utterly enthralled the entire time. Watching two deeply hurting and severely broken characters find hope, courage, and love as this amazing journey unfolded really took my breath away. It was a little frustrating but believable that it was only when they were on the brink of losing something so precious that they finally realized what it was they shared. It’s not easy to see what is right in front of your face when your mind refuses to acknowledge what your heart is screaming to you. It’s only when we stop and truly see that the beauty and life that has been all around us the entire time finally comes into crystal clear focus. Only then, do we start listening to our heart and discover what we have been frantically in search of.
A.C. Arthur has weaved a magical spell that has entranced my mind and delighted my heart. This story was beyond anything that I had hoped for. The characters were thoroughly captivating and the storyline was heart-breakingly superb. I can’t wait to read more from this amazing author who has definitely caught my attention.
Ezra suffered sexual abuse for years causing him to swear off relationships regardless of his insatiable appetite for women. Jewel has been living a lie for the last three years, working as someone else to protect herself and her sick father. Ezra feels a pull to Jewel despite his reservations and her lack of interest returned. When Jewel’s past finally catches up to her, Ezra will tear down anyone in his path to help her. So this is the first part of a 4 part serial, making it about 80 pages total in length. I feel like there was enough character development and back story for each of the characters to get me interested and invested in their wellbeing. There was not a whole lot of action in this episode (for lack of a better word) more like it set the pace for what was to come and introduced us to the characters. Reading this went so quickly and the ending was a complete and utter cliff hanger. If you are looking for a short complete story, this is not for you. I had never read a serial before so I was not completely sure what I was getting myself into. The way the story ended was as if the reader needs to turn the page for the next chapter for the plot to continue, but there was nothing. I do feel like I have to pick up the rest of the installments to get the complete book. That being said, I am not sure I am a huge fan of books in a serial format. I personally would rather pick up an entire book for more money than lots of short less expensive books to make up the same thing. Also, I am not a fan of cliff hangers. It is a useful tool in a series I guess to keep the reader wanting for more and guarantee that they pick up the next book, but I just don’t like them. I have an issue with patience (in other words I completely lack it) and I don’t like to wait for more. I usually end up forgetting what was so all consuming at the time anyway so I don’t feel the anticipation like I originally did. I think for the moment I am over series, especially trilogies. Sorry for the tangent. Overall, this was a quick snippet into the world of the cat shifters that the author has done an amazing job of building. I have read one other book in the series and I have the same one complaint with this one as I did with that: there are too many characters to keep track of. I feel at times overwhelmed by all the side characters mentioned or involved in things and I have no idea how to keep them straight. To be fair, I did not start this shifter journey at the beginning of the series with the first book, but just a random newer title, so maybe that is why I am bamboozled by the character overload. Maybe sometime I will start at the beginning and things will flow better. Who knows? Oh and the books are HOT, with some kink and a lot of steamy thrown in, just an fyi. I received this title from the publisher in exchange for my honest review. More reviews available at my blog: http://smadasbooksmack.blogspot.com/
This is the first of four parts of the serial novel, Hunger’s Mate, and Ms. Arthur certainly has my attention. In this installment, we meet Ezra Preston, a Lead Guard of the Stateside Shadow Shifters. He has been sent to Perryville to infiltrate Comastaz Labs to find out how much the government actually knows about his people. While there he encounters Jewel Jenner, a human who works as the administrative assistant for the Mountain Zone’s Lead Enforcer, Jacques. She calls to his cat in a way that no female has in a very long time. Because of his treatment at the hands of the last female he was drawn to, he does not engage in emotional entanglements with women, not that he ever would with a human.
Fans of the series may recall meeting Jewel briefly in Shifter’s Claim. The Prologue of Hunger’s Mate Part 1 provides quite a bit of insight into Jewel’s past without actually revealing why she is on the run. Through her interactions with Ezra and Jewel’s own inner monologue, it is clear that she was abused – likely physically and sexually – and she is in hiding from the man who abused her. That she unknowingly happened to end up working for a resort owned by shifters who are not interested in humans as mates has given her a safe haven in which to hide. And all was well in her life until Ezra arrived on the scene. He makes her want things she hasn’t wanted in years and this scares her.
As expected, Ms. Arthur infuses an elevated amount of sexual tension between Ezra and Jewel – no sex yet, but the make-out scenes definitely got my inner kitty purring. Although there has been no mention of companheiro calor nor has Ezra considered it in this first installment, those readers familiar with the series will easily recognize the direction of Ezra’s behaviors and the writing on the wall is clear. However, Jewel’s past makes an unexpected intrusion in her life and she is whisked away before Ezra has a chance to take things further. Not only is Ezra left frustrated, but so is the reader as the author has set up the ending of part one with an action-packed cliffhanger that makes me relieved that I already have part two sitting on my Kindle.

REVIEW: HUNGER’S MATE Part 1 introduces the players in A.C. Arthur’s fifth installment in her adult, contemporary Shadow Shifters paranormal romance series. This is Shadow Shifter feline/ Lead Guard Ezra Preston and Jewel Jenner’s storyline.
We are introduced to Ezra Preston-a Shadow Shifter whose current assignment finds him undercover at Comastaz Labs-a government facility involved in the illegal research and possible modification of Shadow Shifter DNA. While Ezra hunts for any clue behind the attack against the Shifters, his mind and body are drawn to a human female who works for Perryville Resort.
Jewel Jenner is hiding a secret; her fear and pain radiate through Ezra and his cat needs to protect her from whatever threat has her running scared. But Jewel’s secret is about to be exposed, and her days of running have come to an end. Ezra’s emotions are all over the place, and he is having difficulty controlling the cat within.
A.C. Arthur sets up the backdrop to HUNGER’S MATE. Ezra’s need for Jewel can only be measured by the desires and needs of his cat, and in this Ezra may have found the woman to tame the beast within. Ezra’s backstory and history is revealed, letting us aware that there is more to Ezra than meets the eye.
Many of the previous storyline characters play a secondary and supporting role: Shifter Hierarchy is revealed through contention and disagreement: and some of the history between the Shadow Shifters, The Genesis Project and Comastaz Labs is slowly revealed as Ezra begins to uncover the truth.

This new serial finally gives us Jewel's backstory and her (hopefully) mate. Coupling a damaged shifter guard with an equally damaged human might be the perfect match for this world. I really hope we get a good HEA at the end of this set.
Jewel is in hiding. She's been on the run (well, really staying still, but in hiding) for the past few years after escaping from her abusive ex and stealing his fortune. Instead of living large and running out of the country, she chose to take care of her ailing father and maintain a job at a resort. Somehow she ended up at a resort filled with shifters but maintains a healthy distance from most of the inhabitants. She even starts to relax until Ezra shows up on the scene.
Ezra is a bit damaged himself from his time growing up in the care of a sadistic woman. He's got tons of baggage, but doesn't let it hinder his attraction to Jewel. The two of them start their rocky romance in this first book, but things that they both thought were in their past manage to come up to bite them (literally).
Hunger's Mate Part 1 is part of a four-part serial that will be a complete novel. It is clearly promoted as just that, so you can be sure that you know you are getting only the beginning of the novel. Each part is released one week apart. Is it worth it, yes, I enjoyed the start of this novel very much.
I remembered Ezra and Jewel from the last book which centered on Bas and his love interest, Priya. While the events of that novel lead up to Ezra going undercover, I still feel this complete novel would read rather well as a stand-alone. The world of the Shadow Shifters is explain as well as the conflict surrounding the Shifters. . Plus there is the glossary which is a bonus in understanding how this society works and fits in with the human world.
Much of Ezra background is explained in this part, which helps to understand how his mind works. He is easy on the eyes and the heart. Jewel is still shrouded in mystery though some of the past is revealed, just not clearly explained. This works well with the cliffhanger at the end of this part. I really like that the author allows us to see in both of their minds.
This seems to be the new thing to do. Release books in parts and then release the whole book after. It is honestly not a favorite new trend of mine. I want the whole book when I get a book. Now that being said I have all 4 parts through NetGalley thankfully. And this first part really hooked me. I want to know what will happen next and luckily I am able to go right to the next part and begin reading but I can see how frustrating it would be for fans of the story/author to have to wait a week.
I am really enjoying Ezra. There is just something about him that I find interesting. We haven’t really gotten to see too much of Jewel yet but what we have seen I like. She is running from her past but it has caught up to her at the end of this part and Ezra just may end up going nuts if he can’t get to her soon. And that is where we are left… until part 2. So far so good. And off we go to the next part.

There is an issue in the area that concerns the Shadow Shifters. So they send Ezra there to investigate and help out the local Shifters. Ezra normally stays away from humans but he can't seem to stay away from Jewel. One of the resort employees. It doesn't help matters that he can tell that she wants him too.
Jewel doesn't want anything to do with Ezra. But he just won't leave her alone. She just wants to be somewhere where her and her father are safe from her past.
I think that this was a great beginning to the book. I have read some of this authors work before and I really like it. The Shadow Shifters series is another take on shifters. I have enjoyed what I have read so far and I definitely recommend reading!
I totally didn't know that all 4 parts of this serial made up book 5 of a series. LOL No worries, I caught on pretty good. The first part of the book is mainly a lot of info and background rehashing. I couldn't keep up with all the characters that were coming in at first. But as I read I caught on much better. Yeah I would have read the other books first and it would have helped me catch one quicker. There's multiple POVs and that helps a lot and it's also done really well. There's a great insight to a lot of things happening this way. Jewel is on the run. Ezra has a troubled past. but he won't run like Jewel, he wants to face them. And then chaos ensues. There's some great action that takes place and the romance is hot. I of course love shifters, so I enjoyed this one! 4 PAWS!!
This book is part of a novel that has been serialized. Meaning it's one book that has been split into multiple parts, four parts to be exact. While it's a great idea, amps up hype for the story, keeps people interested, as a reader it's super frustrating!
In this first instalment you're introduced to Jewel and Ezra. Both have their secrets but both are pretty loveable nonetheless. He's a rugged man's man and, she well she doesn't truly let anyone in. I really loved the primal nature of the shifters. Especially Ezra, I can't wait to see how they're developed over the three other parts of the book.
I received this book courtesy of NetGalley in exchange for my free and honest review.
I was given a copy of this book by Netgalley for an honest review. HUNGER’S MATE PART is split into 4 parts, and this is a great start to the book. In part one we get to meet Jewel Jenner and Ezra Preston. We find out that Jewel is running from her past and it has found her. Ezra meets Jewel and he cannot resist her and wants her at all costs. The characters and the story line are well-developed. I enjoyed this book and can’t wait to see what happens. I am torn between getting the other three parts or waiting for the whole book to be released. I recommend this book to everyone, and I give it 4/5 stars.
Two different people, two different missions, but both attracted to each other. Ezra is on a mission to protect and discover the secrets of the nearby lab. Jewels is on the run and has her own secrets.
He can't get her out of his head, and his cat wont take no for an answer. No matter what Jewels wont let her guard down and is doing everything she can to make sure she's protected. However she doesn't anticipate Ezra reading her like no one has before. Fighting the attraction between the two is getting harder as well. I really liked this.
I loved Ezra right from the start, "I think you look damned good in my arms." He's protective, "when I see a woman running for her life, all that freedom crap goes straight to hell. Now you can tell me what happened or I'll find out for myself," he warned." I think what I loved most about Ezra was his cat, "the cat in Ezra was clear on one thing - save Jewel - and kill anyone who gets in his way." I'm excited to see how this plays out.
Ezra and Jewel both have secrets and both are attracted to each other. Jewel is on the run, hiding from a man that hurt her. Ezra is looking into a lab trying to figure out what they are up to. This was a good start to the novella series, it kept me interested all the way through. I'm looking forward to the next part.
I was given a copy by the publisher via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
LOVE the cover. So excited to see POC in a clinch. Unfortunately, I couldn't get into the story. It felt that this wasn't the first in this world. There were concepts and worldbuilding that went over my head in that way when you miss the first book and read the second by accident. That's how I felt reading this.
This by far is one of the best shifter series I've read. The author could easily write anything but I'm glad she chose paranormal romance. What makes it good is her writing, the plot, and foreshadowing I can't wait to download the next book.
