About the author

Satyajit Ray (Bengali: সত্যজিৎ রায়) was an Indian filmmaker and author of Bengali fiction and regarded as one of the greatest auteurs of world cinema. Ray was born in the city of Calcutta into a Bengali family prominent in the world of arts and literature. Starting his career as a commercial artist, Ray was drawn into independent filmmaking after meeting French filmmaker Jean Renoir and watching Vittorio De Sica's Italian neorealist 1948 film, Bicycle Thieves.

Ray directed 36 films, including feature films, documentaries and shorts. He was also a fiction writer, publisher, illustrator, calligrapher, graphic designer and film critic. He authored several short stories and novels, primarily aimed at children and adolescents.

Ray's first film, Pather Panchali (1955), won eleven international prizes, including Best Human Documentary at the Cannes Film Festival. This film, Aparajito (1956) and Apur Sansar (1959) form The Apu Trilogy. Ray did the scripting, casting, scoring, and editing, and designed his own credit titles and publicity material. Ray received many major awards in his career, including 32 Indian National Film Awards, a number of awards at international film festivals and award ceremonies, and an Academy Award in 1992. The Government of India honoured him with the Bharat Ratna in 1992.

Early Life and Background:
Ray's grandfather, Upendrakishore Ray Chowdhury was a writer, illustrator, philosopher, publisher, amateur astronomer and a leader of the Brahmo Samaj, a religious and social movement in nineteenth century Bengal. Sukumar Ray, Upendrakishore's son and father of Satyajit, was a pioneering Bengali author and poet of nonsense rhyme and children's literature, an illustrator and a critic. Ray was born to Sukumar and Suprabha Ray in Calcutta.

Ray completed his B.A. (Hons.) in Economics at Presidency College of the University of Calcutta, though his interest was always in Fine Arts. In 1940, he went to study in Santiniketan where Ray came to appreciate Oriental Art. In 1949, Ray married Bijoya Das and the couple had a son, Sandip ray, who is now a famous film director.

Literary Works:
Ray created two of the most famous fictional characters ever in Bengali children's literature—Feluda, a sleuth in Holmesian tradition, and Professor Shonku, a genius scientist. Ray also wrote many short stories mostly centered on Macabre, Thriller and Paranormal which were published as collections of 12 stories. Ray wrote an autobiography about his childhood years, Jakhan Choto Chilam (1982). He also wrote essays on film, published as the collections: Our Films, Their Films (1976), Bishoy Chalachchitra (1976), and Ekei Bole Shooting (1979).

Awards, Honors and Recognitions:
Ray received many awards, including 32 National Film Awards by the Government of India. At the Moscow Film Festival in 1979, he was awarded for the contribution to cinema. At the Berlin Film Festival, he was one of only three to win the Silver Bear for Best Director more than once and holds the record for the most Golden Bear nominations, with seven. At the Venice Film Festival, he won a Golden Lion for Aparajito(1956), and awarded the Golden Lion Honorary Award in 1982. In 1992 he was posthumously awarded the Akira Kurosawa Award for Lifetime Achievement in Directing at the San Francisco International Film Festival.

বিশ্বসাহিত্য কেন্দ্রে বসে এটা পড়ছি।
খুব মন খারাপ নিয়ে বিকালে একা একা গেছিলাম বই জমা দিতে পরে মনে হলো বই জমা দিয়ে এত সকাল সকাল চলে না এসে একটা বই পড়ে যাই। এরকম যতদিন হয়েছে আমি সবসময় সত্যজিৎ রায়ের কোন বই পড়ে আসি। ওদের শেলফ ভর্তি ফেলুদা, প্রফেসর শঙ্কু। বইয়ের মলাট গুলো ও কি চমৎকার *_*
পরে জটায়ুর কীর্তিকলাপ পড়ে কি যে কষ্টে হাসি চেপে রাখছি তা আর কি বলি!!! XD
আমার হাসি দেখে পাশের টেবিলে বসা এক আঙ্কেল বই থেকে মুখ তুলে এমন ভাবে তাকালো মনে হলো নির্ঘাত আমি পাগোল হয়ে গেছি! :'3

বরাবরের প্রিয় গল্প। এই একটি ফেলুদা কাহিনীতে ফিল্মমেকার সত্যজিৎ রায়ের বহিঃপ্রকাশ সব থেকে বেশি। শুরুর দিকে ফেলু মিত্তিরের সিনেমার গপ্পো লেখার গপ্পোটাও ভারী মজাদার।

এক তারা কম কারণ বোম্বাইয়ের মতন একটি ভীষণ জলজ্যান্ত শহর এই গল্পে যেন থেকেও স্তিমিত। সাকুল্যে ওই কপার চিমনি, হোটেল তাজ ও এক চিলতে সমুদ্রতট। মানসভ্রমনে কোথাও যেন ঘাটতি থেকে যায়। সেটাই যা আফসোস।

তবে 'জেট বাহাদুর' এর অবস্থা যেমনটাই হোক না কেন। আসলি বোম্বাইয়ের বোম্বেটে পড়ে আর যাই হোক, আপনাকে কোডোপাইরিন খেতে হবে না।

পছন্দের একটা গল্প। মুম্বাই সম্পর্কে একটা ভালো ধারণা গড়ে উঠে, মানে ভ্রমণ বিষয়ক। এদিকে যতবারই পড়ি, ততবারই কল্লোলের কড়া পাক দেয়া সন্দেশ ডায়মন্ডা খাওয়ার জন্য প্রাণ আঁইঢাই করে!

জটায়ুর উপন্যাস দিয়ে হবে ফাটাফাটি সিনেমা আর সেই সিনেমার শ্যুটিং দেখতে ফেলুদা গেলো বোম্বে। উপন্যাসের নাম বোম্বাইয়ের বোম্বেটে। এর থেকে আরেকটু বললেই স্পয়লার হয়ে যাবে।🥴

জটায়ুর খ্যাতি এখন কলকাতা ছাড়িয়ে বোম্বাইয়ে গিয়ে ঠেকেছে। জটায়ুর এক বই এর কাহিনী নিয়ে সিনেমা বানোনো হবে বোম্বায়ে। মুভির কাজ দেখতে জটায়ুকে দাওয়াত দেওয়া হয়। ফেলুদা এবং তোপসের হাতে কাজ না থাকায় একই সাথে রওনা দেয় তারা। কিন্তু কথায় আছে ঢেকি স্বর্গে গেলেও ধান ভানে, একই ঘটনা ঘটে ফেলুদার সাথে। বোম্বায়ে পৌছেই ঘটনাক্রমে জড়িয়ে যায় স্মাগলিং আর খুনের কেসের সাথে। সন্দেহের তীর এসে পরে বেচারা জটায়ুর দিকে। শেষে অবশ্য হালকা ক্লাইমাক্স আছে।

পাঠপ্রতিক্রিয়াঃ গল্পের বই পড়া এবং সেটা নিয়ে রিভিউ লিখা এখন আলসামুর কারনে হয়ে ওঠে না। রিভিউ বলেন আর সারসংক্ষেপ বলেন লেখাটা হয় নিজের জন্যে। যেন পরবর্তীতে বই এর কথা মনে পরলে রি কল করা যায় বইটা নিয়ে। রিডার্সব্লকের মাঝে বইটা পড়তে খারাপ লাগেনি। তবে ক্ষেত্র বিশেষে বইটা কেন যেন অন্য বই এর তুলনায় একটু ম্যাড়মেড়ে লেগেছে।

The fun of a straightforward simple mystery is under rated. I got started on this book after reading Satyajit Ray's Childhood days and I understood why his scriptwriting and books are oriented in detail.

In this simple mystery, Feluda along with Topshe and Jatayu are in Bombay after Jatayu's latest book is bought by a film production house. Feluda could not stop making sly comments about Bombay Vs Bengali movies - a commentary Mr.Ray wouldn't make in public. Since the story itself is set in a film shooting - there are multiple elements which he details out - like the stunt sequence or the site selection or the stunt men.

The murder of course and the final scooby doo type unmasking of the villain were nostalgic of the earlier mysteries which were less complex.

রহস্য গল্প লেখক জটায়ু ওরফে লালমোহন গাঙ্গুলীর খ্যাতি এখন কলকাতা ছাড়িয়ে বোম্বাইতেও পৌছে গেছে। ওনার একটা গল্পের ওপর ছবি হবে, তার জন্যই থ্রি মাস্কোটিয়ারস এবার বোম্বাইতে। তবে ফেলুদা কোথাও যাবেন আর সেখানে কোন রহস্যের সাথে মোকাবেলা হবে না তা তো সম্ভব না। এবার তারা জড়িয়ে যান চোরাকারবারিদের সাথে। জটায়ুকে দেখা হয় সন্দেহের চোখে। বোম্বাইতে পৌছানোর পর প্রোডিউসারের বাড়ির লিফটে একটা খুন হয়। ডেথবডির পাশে পাওয়া যায় একটা কাগজ, তাতে জটায়ুর নাম-ধাম লেখা। গল্পের শেষে ছোট্ট একটা ক্লাইম্যাক্স ও ছিল। জটায়ুর কার্যকলাপে হেসেছি বেশ!

গুডরিডস এ রি-রিড অপশন রাখা উচিত।

সেই ছোট্টবেলায় পড়া।সানডে সাসপেন্সের কল্যাণে আবার শুনে নিলাম।
সত্যি কথা বলতে কি,সানডে সাসপেন্সের ফেলুদা শোনার মজা,ফেলুদা পড়ার মজাকেও ছাপিয়ে যায়।

আমার স্মৃতিশক্তি খুবই খারাপ। মা হাতে টাকা দিয়ে ৩টে জিনিস কিনতে দোকানে পাঠালে দুটো কিনে আরেকটার কথা ভুলে যেতাম। সেই আমার বোম্বাইয়ের বোম্বেটের প্রথম ৫ অধ্যায় পর্যন্ত একটা সময় দাঁড়ি কমা সুদ্ধু মুখস্ত ছিল। মুখস্ত করার কোন উদ্দেশ্য ছিল না, কতবার পড়েছিলাম তাঁর একটা ধারণা পাওয়া যাবে এই তথ্য দিয়ে। স্কুলে থাকলে এইগুলোতেই ডুবে থাকতাম। কাহিনি আর লেখা অদ্ভুত ভাল ছিল। একবারে পড়ে উঠতে হয়, আর বারবার পড়া যায়।

ফেলুদা পড়তে পড়তে কল্পনাশক্তি ভালই প্রসারিত হচ্ছে আমার। তবে যদি সিনেমাগুলাও দেখতে পারতাম, তবে জমে খীর হতো একদম। কিন্তু আফসোস...
ঠিক করেছি আগে গল্প গুলা শেষ করে একে একে সবগুলো সিনেমা দেখে ফেলব।

ইচ্ছা ছিল সব গুলো গল্পের সারাংশ লিখব। কিন্তু আলসেমি খুব পেয়ে বসেছে। সময় টাও তেমন অ্যালাউ করছে না। সংকল্পের তাই আপাতত ইতি। কোন গল্প খুব ভাল লাগলে লিখব। কিনত সমস্যা হল সব কয়টা গল্পই পড়তে পড়তে মনে হয় খুব ভাল। এই কন্সিডারেশনটাও তাই আর ধোপে টিকবে বলে মনে হয় না। আচ্ছা দেখি।

I read this one back in school and, although after thr Golden Fortress, this seemed like a let down, it was quite good, nevertheless. By now Lalmohan Babu and Feluda's friendship has grown and there's natural chemistry among the 3 protagonists.

রেডিও মিরচিতে শুনছিলাম বোম্বাইয়ের বোম্বেটে। সব্যসাচীর গলায় ফেলুদা বরাবরই চমকপ্রদ। আর পরানদার গলায় 'লালু' ডাকটা। বোম্বাইয়ের তাজমহল হোটেল, গেটওয়ে অফ ইন্ডিয়া, খান্ডালা, কুংফু ক্যারাতে, ডাকাত দল ও রেলগাড়ি নিয়ে শুটিং দৃশ্য- পুরো টানটান উত্তেজনা- জমে ক্ষীর!

It was, just like other stories in the series, an entertaining read. The story seemed to move at a slower pace till the second last chapter. Last two chapters stole the show, picked up the pace and met the expectations of readers from adventures of Feluda.

লালমোহনবাবুর বই এর অনুসারে একটি ছবি হবে মুম্বাই এ। সেই সুবাদে ফেলুদাদের বোম্বেতে ভ্রমণ। ভ্রমণের আগে মি স্যানাল একটি বই এর প্যাকেট দিয়ে যায় লালমোহনবাবুকে। সেই প্যাকেট বোম্বেতে একজন এর কাছে জমা দিতে হবে। লালমোহনবাবু যাকে সেই প্যাকেট জমা দেয় তাকে কিছুটা সন্দেহ হওয়ায় ফেলুদা তার পিছা করে। সেই লোক 'শিবাজি ক্যাসেল" এ আসে। সেখানেই ১৭ নং ফ্লোরে যায়। সেদিন হোটেলে চলে আসার পর ফেলুদারা জানতে পারে যে সেই শিবাজি ক্যাসেল এর লিফটে খুন হয় সেখানে লালমোহনবাবুর নাম পাওয়া যায়। সেই লোক যে কিনা প্যাকেটটা নিয়ে গিয়েছিলো সে ঐ কাজ করেছে বলে ফেলুদা ধারণা করে। লালমোহনবাবুর প্রোডিউসার গোরের সাথেও ফেলুদাদের দেখা হয়। তার কাছ থেকে টাকা নিতে যায় লালমোহনবাবু। পরে দেখা যায় যে লালমোহনবাবু সেই লোককে আসল প্যাকেট দেননি। ভুলে অন্য প্যাকেট দিয়ে দিসে। তাই লালমোহনবাবু একটু যেনো হাপ ছেড়ে বাচলো। পরেরদিন ফিল্মের শুটিং হচ্ছে। ট্রেনের একটা শুট। ফেলুদাদের ফার্স্টক্লাস সিটে বসায় দেয়া হইসে। সে কামড়ায় উঠে পড়ে মি স্যানাল । হাতে বন্দুক। ফেলুদাদের সেই বই দিতে বলে। সেই বই এর পৃষ্ঠা ছিড়ে স্যানাল আসল জিনিশ পায় না। আসলে ফেলুদা সেই জিনিশ(হীরা) সরিয়ে ফেলেছিলো রাতেই। এই দেরী হওয়াতে শুটিং এর স্টান্টম্যান ভিক্টর চলে আসে। ফেলুদাদের রেস্কিউ করে। ট্রেন থেমে যায়, পুলিশ এসে স্যানালকে ধরে। আসলে স্যানাল হলো প্রোডিউসার গোরে। ছদ্মবেশে স্মাগলিং করে।

অর্ধেক রেটিং দেয়ার ফিচারটা গুডরিডসে না থাকাটা খুবই বিরক্তিকর। অনেকবার ৩ বা ৪ দিতে হয়েছে যেখানে ইচ্ছে ছিল সাড়ে চার দেয়ার।

যাই হোক, ফেলুদা এবছরের আগে কখনো না পড়লেও বেশ কিছু গল্পের নাম অনেক শুনেছি। বোম্বাইয়ের বোম্বেটে নামটি অনেক ছোটবেলাতেই শুনেছি। যারা ফেলুদার ভক্ত তাদের কাছে এর অনেক সুনামও শুনেছি। আমার খুব বেশি ভাল লাগেনি। একই ব্যাপার সোনার কেল্লার ব্যাপারেও হয়েছিল।

পুরো গল্প জুড়েই একটা চাপা উত্তেজনা ছিল কিন্তু তাও তেমন জমেনি আমার কাছে মনে হয়েছে। হ্যাঁ, ক্লাইমেক্সটা বেশ ভাল কিন্তু এছাড়া তেমন একটা ভাল লাগেনি। প্রতি অধ্যায়েই অপেক্ষা করছিলাম যে এই বুঝি জমবে, কিন্তু তেমন জমেনি। চরিত্রদেরকেও তেমন বিপদে পড়ে গেছে এমনটা মনে হয়নি ওই ক্লাইমেক্স ছাড়া।

বেশ অবাক হলাম যে আগের বইগুলোর মত এখানে মুম্বাইয়ের তেমন বর্ণনা দেননি সত্যজিৎ, কিছুটা দিয়েই শেষ। তোপসেও আর তেমন কাজে আসছে না। আগের গল্পগুলোতে ও ছোটখাটো একটা সহকারীর ভূমিকা নিত, এখানে সে নিতান্তই দর্শক। ও বর্ণনাকারী না হলে ওকে এই গল্পে না নিলেও চলত। এ বই পড়ে সম্পূর্ণ হতাশ হইনি অবশ্যই, তবে আশাহত হয়েছি কিছুটা।

ফেলুদার বইতে ভালো ভালো জায়গার সাথে এত সুন্দর করে বর্ণনা থাকে যেন জায়গা গুলো চোখের সামনে ফুটে ওঠে। কিন্তু এই বইতে বোম্বাইয়ের মতো এরকম ঝাঁ চকচকে শহরটাকে ম্লান ভাবে দেখানো হয়েছে,শুধু বিশেষ কতা জায়গার নাম উল্লেখ করে ছেড়ে দিয়েছেন, কেন? Why ??
যাই হোক, গল��পের শুরু তেই গণ্ডগোল কোথায় ধরে ফেলেছিলাম, নতুনত্ব লাগেনি তাই। 3 star দিলাম।

এখানে ছবির প্রডিউসার মিঃ গোরে, ডিরেক্টর পুলক ঘোষাল, কিং ফু মাষ্টার মিঃ পেরুমল, ছদ্মবেশী মিঃ সান্যাল উল্লেখ্য।
মালাবার হিলস - হ্যাঙ্গিং গার্ডেনস্, ম্যারিন ড্রাইভ, Copper Chimney restaurant, ভিক্টোরিয়া টার্মিনাস,ফ্লোরা ফাউন্টেন, Prince of Wales মিউজিয়াম, Gateway of India - বোম্বের এই জায়গা গুলো মনে রাখার স্বার্থে নোট করে রাখলাম।

It's okay. Nothing much to write to home about. The story wasn't great or deep and translation was plain. I'm guessing the ingenuousness of the translation was, maybe, because this work aimed at much younger audience since this is unlike the volume 'The Collected Short Stories by Satyajit Ray' which had great stories from diverse genres and each of them having a lot of depth for their length, and the translation was indeed quite competent, which I am guessing were done by the same person.

One can read it if he/she happens to be a fan of this particular sleuth, else can skip.

ইদের দিন, মাঠের নামাজ শেষ, নাস্তাও শেষ, আকাশ টাও মেঘ করে ছিল কিন্তু বৃষ্টি হয়নি। এইতো ২০ টা বছর আগেও এই সময় বিটিভি খুলে ইদের নাটক দেখা শুরু করতাম। এখন চ্যানেল এর অভাব নাই, কন্টেন্ট এর অভাব নাই, কিন্তু মনে টেকেনা কিছুই। আমার তো মনে হয় আজ থেকে ২০ বছর পরে স্মৃতিচারণেরও কিছু থাকবেনা। তাই আর আগেপিছে না ভেবে শেল্ফ থেকে ফেলুদা সমগ্রটা হাতে নিয়েই "বোম্বাইয়ের বোম্বেটে" পড়া শুরু করলাম। এর সিনেমাটাও আগে হাজারবার দেখা হয়েছে, গল্পটাও পড়া ২-৩ বার। কিন্তু যতবারই পড়ি নতুন লাগে। ফেলুদা একটা ইমোশন এর নাম। সময়টা ভালো কেটেছে।
