This book, Mastering Enterprise Platform Engineering by Mark Peters and Gautam Palappa, is a great read if you want to understand how to build, manage, and scale modern enterprise platforms. It’s divided into 11 chapters across three parts, starting with an introduction to modern platform engineering and the history of DevOps. The authors also include a useful analysis of today’s technology landscape.
What I really liked is that each chapter ends with actionable takeaways, best practices, and further readings, which helps turn concepts into something practical.
The book isn’t deeply technical, you won’t find full projects but there are code snippets, frameworks, and real-world examples. It focuses strongly on security, DevOps tools, leadership, and organizational design. And of course AI.
It’s perfect for architects, operations and security managers, or team leaders who want to understand the bigger picture of platform engineering. The authors also highlight real examples from companies like Netflix and others that struggled with their platform efforts, showing both successes and lessons learned.
Another strong point is how the book ties AI and platform engineering together, explaining clearly that AI is an enabler, not a replacement. It also covers key roles such as platform managers, DevOps engineers, and architects, giving you a clear view of what a well-structured platform team looks like.
Overall, this book gives you the frameworks, tools, and direction to begin or improve your enterprise platform journey.
I gave it four stars because, while it’s rich in ideas and leadership guidance, it’s not a deeply technical book. If you’re looking for hands-on implementation, it might feel light in that area. But if your goal is to understand strategy, best practices, and how to lead successful platform engineering initiatives, this book is absolutely worth reading.
