They were never truly over — and this time love might just get it right.

After ten years of globe-trotting, Cassie Channing returns to Sturcombe Bay to care for her ailing grandmother. Only to find herself face-to-face with Liam Ellis — the man she once loved and left behind.

Liam has moved on since the day Cassie left, or so he tells himself. A devoted single dad and respected vet, he’s built a life without her. But the moment she steps back into the village, old feelings come rushing back.

Liam’s determined to keep his distance — but the spark between them is impossible to ignore. And, as Cassie settles into village life and grows close to his daughter, staying away gets harder.

The more time Cassie and Liam spend together, the more the heat between them intensifies — but so do the unresolved tensions from the past.

With Cassie’s plane ticket booked to leave in six weeks, they both must decide if the love they never really got over is worth a second chance.

I'm a Londoner, though now I live in Devon, a twenty-minute walk from the sea. I love nothing more than walking my pretty Cavapoo on the beach in the rain (well, OK, I don't object to the sun, but when it's raining we usually have the whole beach to ourselves.)

Back in the day I had 25 novels published by Mills&Boon. After a long gap doing other things I found my love of writing again, and self-published three new novels.

But I knew that to reach more readers I needed an established publisher. Step in Joffe Books. They were top of my list so I was delighted when they accepted the first novel I sent them.

This could be the beginning of a beautiful friendship.

Coming Home to Sturcombe Bay is book 2 in the Sturcombe Bay series but can be read as a standalone.

It was so easy to fall in love with Cassie and Liam. They’re such lovable characters

Cassie is back home to see her Nanna knowing she hasn’t got long left. The moment she’s back she feels a sense of calmness like she belongs. When her eyes land upon Liam riding in the background it brings back memories to her first love and her broken heart and leaving him behind to explore the world.

Liam is living life the best he can. After an accident leaves him and his daughter without the woman in their lives he’s doing the best he can. He works and loves riding the horses. When his eyes land upon the girl that broke his heart when he was 18 he’s taken back to those times.

As the two spend time with their friends who just happen to be in the same circle they slowly being to become what the once were. There’s a spark between them, one that’s never gone away.

It’s been a fun and easy journey reading this book. All the characters and the town, it’s all so precious. This is my first read from this author but I know it won’t be my last. Her writing is beautifully done and flows easily, I’m hooked.

Even though this was the first book I picked up in the series, I instantly fell in love with the characters. It has everything you could hope for in a romance—charm, emotion, and engaging relationships. That said, the romantic scenes themselves weren’t written in the style I typically enjoy. While the story moved me to tears at times, the ending felt rushed and didn’t entirely fit the characters I had come to know.

If book one was a warm hug in story form, then book two felt like coming back to that same cosy embrace—only this time, with an even deeper sense of comfort and belonging.

I adored Coming Home to Sturcombe Bay just as much as A Fresh Start at Bramble Cottage. In fact, reading the two books back-to-back made the whole experience even more special. I’d been saving the first book on my TBR for a while, and I’m so glad I waited. It felt like stepping into a familiar village where everyone knows your name, and the kettle is always on.

Susanne McCarthy has a writing style that’s both gentle and emotionally rich. Her descriptions are so vivid and immersive that I genuinely felt like I was there—standing on the clifftops, wandering through the village, or curled up in a cosy cottage with the scent of sea salt and home baking in the air. She paints the setting with such affection that Sturcombe Bay feels like a real place—one I’d move to in a heartbeat.

What really shines in this story is the kindness and quiet strength of the characters. There’s a real sense of community—of people looking out for one another, even through misunderstandings and heartaches. The plot itself is sweet, emotional, and full of moments that made me smile. It’s a story about second chances, finding where you belong, and the kind of love that creeps up on you when you least expect it.

Coming Home to Sturcombe Bay is the kind of book that leaves your heart just a little lighter than it was before. Uplifting, tender, and beautifully written. I was genuinely sad to leave this world behind when I turned the final page.

Here’s hoping there’s more to come from this delightful seaside village, because I am already missing Sturcombe Bay and its lovely cast of characters. 💖🏡🌊

This is the second book in the Sturcombe Bay Romance series, yet only the first that I've read.

This actually worked pretty well as a standalone read though as we focus mainly on the lives of Cassie and Liam.

When Cassie returns home to the bay to care for her sick Nanna, she knew that old memories would be stirred up.

But after 10 years of travelling the world, she didn't realise just how much those feelings would develop for the man who had once been her first love.

This made for the perfect summer read with it's feel-good storyline and likable characters.

I really felt for the pair initially as they tried to navigate the strength of their feelings for each other - against those feelings of past hurt and worry for the future.

It was great to see Cassie bond with Robyn instantly. Such a sweet relationship.

But I totally understood Liam's reservations, especially after the death of his wife (her mum).

This had me on tenterhooks as I really wasn't sure what might happen in the end and this kept me racing ahead to fins out how things played out.

The setting of Sturcombe was just beautiful and I could just imagine myself there along with all the characters.

I must make some time soon, to go back and read the first book in this series to experience our introduction to the area.

And I'm already looking forward to returning for the next book.

Here’s my review of Coming Home To Sturcombe Bay by Susanne McCarthy

I don’t usually read romance stories but this one sounded intriguing, a ‘will they, won’t they’ situation so I just had to know the answer! It was a riveting read but I thought after all the build up, the ending was a bit rushed. It was set in a little village by the sea. Cassie and Liam had known each other since she was fourteen as she was a proper tomboy and hung around with her brother and his friends. They got together when she was seventeen for about six months then she had to choose between travelling and Liam. She chose travelling but it hurt to leave him and now she is back after ten years away, they were trying to be friends but there were still feelings on both sides. Although nothing was said. Neither wanted to test the water and Liam had his daughter, Robyn to consider. This story was well written and well thought out. It was written with a lot of emotion and feelings involved. Cassie and Liam were very likeable characters and I liked both of them. I liked that the story told of the past as well as the present. The author wrote the story as if it was happening in real life and made it feel believable. I read it in one sitting. The story has very descriptive writing and describes everything in detail. It makes it easy to picture it in your mind as you are reading. It makes Sturcombe very picturesque and well worth a visit if you like the sea.

Blurb :

They were never truly over — and this time love might just get it right.

After ten years of globe-trotting, Cassie Channing returns to Sturcombe Bay to care for her ailing grandmother. Only to find herself face-to-face with Liam Ellis — the man she once loved and left behind.

A devoted single dad and vet, Liam has moved on since the day Cassie left, or so he tells himself.

With Cassie’s flight booked to leave in six weeks, they both must decide if the love they never really got over is worth a second chance.

Firstly thank you to net galley for providing this e-arc in exchange for a honest review.

Secondly I want to highlight that this is book 2 in an interconnected series but you do not need to read the book before (I had not).

Coming home to Sturcombe Bay is a light hearted, fluffy second chance romance set in beautiful Devon.

Cassie the FMC decided to travel the world at 18 and left her then boyfriend Liam at home. Both going their separate ways for 10 years before meeting again when Cassie returns to her home town to visit her ailing Grandmother.

The star of the book for me was Robyn, Liams 5 year old daughter.

If you enjoy slow burn, second chance romance with very little spice, then this book would be ideal for you.

Due to not reading book 1 I did not care much for some of the characters that was mentioned, you get the understanding that the previous book was based on a few of them (after googling this, it was confirmed) maybe if I had read the first book, my rating would be higher, and I would recommend new readers to perhaps read book 1 to be able to fully enjoy the experience.

The book is a very much slow burn, where the characters do not get together, or actually have a adult conversation about their 'relationship' until the penultimate chapter...

I personally wanted a bit more angst and push and pull with the main characters, but all we got was awkward meets and inner monologue about each other.

The ending was very rushed in my opinion.... after a whole book of liking each other from afar but deciding not to pursue things, an out of the blue one night stand to 3 days of distance from each other to a marriage proposal, and a wedding (this is across I think 2-3 chapters).

Well Contrived Story; Easy Read
I thoroughly recommend this book. Coming Home to Sturcombe Bay by Susanne McCarthy is an enjoyable, well written read from the first page to the last, containing everything you were expecting a book of this genre to be.
Cassie and Liam were childhood sweethearts in cozily scenic Sturcombe Bay located on the picturesque South coast of Devon. They planned to go to Exeter University, then spend the rest of their lives together – until Cassie’s wanderlust prevailed. With the help of Cassie’s Nanna who gave her money to fund a divemaster certificate and encouraged her to follow her dreams, She left Liam behind while she spent ten years fulfilling her desire to see the world. Our tale begins as Cassie returns to Sturcombe Bay to be with her dying Nanna.
This well-contrived story is skillfully written and easy to read, the characters are well-developed and believable, it is schmaltzy, it contains not just one but weddings plural to make you smile – and a funeral to coax a tear or two, a couple of nicely steamy interludes, some lovable pets and absolutely adorable children. Liam’s daughter Robyn is so delightful you just want to pluck her from the page and hug her!
Cassie spends the whole book vacillating between accepting a once-in-a-lifetime offer to manage a luxury resort in New Zealand and resume her adventuresome lifestyle or settle “home” in Sturcombe Bay. Liam spends the time resisting his inner urges to ask Cassie to stay this time. Does this situation have a happy conclusion? I shall not spoil the ending for you – but encourage you to read this entertaining book and find out for yourself!

A lovely story of coming home and finding love again.
After ten years of traveling the world, Cassie returns to Sturcombe Bay—the small coastal town she left at 18—and to Liam, the boy she once loved. Liam has always belonged in their hometown, and Cassie's return only reminds him that while he’s always loved her, her heart might still be out chasing the world.

This story had all the ingredients for a five-star read: second chances, small-town charm, and the tender ache of first love revisited. I really enjoyed the wholesome small town setting, the side characters, and I quite liked Robyn—Liam’s daughter—whose personality brought warmth and a bit of sparkle to the pages.

There were some emotional moments that gave this story the potential to become a truly swoon-worthy romance. But for me, it just didn’t fully deliver. After such a drawn-out slow burn, it didn’t quite hit the emotional depth I was hoping for. I found myself wanting more from their reconnection—more romance, more spark, more heart.
Additionally, some editing issues pulled me out of the story. The repeated references to a "little" or "small daughter" felt awkward and inconsistent, and the dialogue was at times difficult to follow, with conversations that felt a bit jumbled. The frequent use of “huh” also stood out and often felt out of place.

All in all, this book had great potential and a beautiful premise, but the execution didn’t fully deliver for me. Still, if you're a fan of slow burns, small-town love, and stories about rediscovery, it may just be your cup of tea.

Thank you to NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.

I’m going to be honest here. The blurb of this book focuses on the romance between Cassie and Liam, but honestly, the entirety of the book as a whole doesn’t really focus on the romance too much. This book really focuses on Cassie coming home after ten years away. She sees family and friends that she hasn’t in ten years, including her nanna who is close to the end of her life. She reassess her life and what her future holds; she tries to figure out what she wants for her future – whether she is going to stay or leave again.

This aspect of the book was fantastic. I loved seeing the relationship between Cassie and her Nanna. Nanna is a spitfire of a woman. Everyone was so welcoming of Cassie, even though she had been gone for so long. Though, Cassie did miss her sister’s wedding because she didn’t want to see Liam with his new girlfriend. I wanted to yell at Cassie for that.

When it comes to the romance, it felt nonexistent for a majority of the book, at least for me. Liam and Cassie had some interactions, but some were awkward, and some were okay. But I didn’t feel any pull between the two characters. I wanted to have more interactions; I wanted to have more yearning and angst. By the time these two have a real conversation, it was 80% into the book. I don’t want to give away the ending, but let’s just say, it all happens way too quick. I will say, Liam has a daughter from his first marriage (he’s a widow). Robyn (his daughter) and Cassie have a delightful relationship!

Anyway, this is a feel good kind of book, so if you like those, this book would be great for you!

Thank you NetGalley and Joffe books for the chance to read this ARC!

I love small town romance stories, and Susanne McCarthy describes the idyllic seaside village of Sturcombe Bay in such a way, you can almost feel the sand between your toes and smell the salty air. I’m not familiar with many British English words or slang and had to look them up while reading, which was kind of fun to be honest. The book does include their definitions in the back!

Cassie hasn’t been home to Sturcombe bay in a decade. She’s been traveling the world and relishing the adventures. But now that an ailing family member has brought her home, she’s instantly struck with the feeling that there’s truly no place like home. But is that what she truly wants, when she’s plagued with choices she made in the past and will need to face the reality of if she moves back to this small town for good.

Liam watched Cassie walk away once, and though it hurt- he moved on and started a life and family without her. Tragedy has since altered his world and it doesn’t look the way he expected it to. Now that Cassie has returned home after ten years, it has brought up many feelings. He’s drawn to her, but he can’t let himself get close to her, only to lose her again.

A true slow burn second chance romance, don’t anticipate many surprises in this one. It follows the mold of what you expect from this type of small town romance story. The predictability is a comfort.

I would say 3.5 stars.

Lovely story about second chance at love
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 31 May 2025
Cassie Channing returns to her seaside home after 10 years travelling & working overseas following a phone call telling her her Nanna is seriously ill.
At aged 18 she left behind her loving family and first love Liam who was in his final year studying to be a vet following a family tradition and lifelong love of horses.
It was inevitable they'd meet up in such a small town and both had memories of their sad parting but also the love they'd felt for each other. Cassie was still single but Liam had married 7 years before , had a beautiful daughter but just 4 years into their marriage his wife had been tragically killed in a road accident on holiday in Greece. He had reservations about whether Cassie would go back to New Zealand and break his heart and that of Robyn his beautiful 5 year old daughter as she'd done before and was only just beginning to get over the loss of his loving wife Natalie.
Cassie was torn between staying , finding her love for Liam growing stronger or would she miss her other life across the world.
The pace of the book and the emotions it stirs go to make this a very good read.

Cassie Channing and Liam Ellis were childhood sweethearts. At Cassie's 18th Burthday party, they finally give themselves to each other and make love on their secret beach. They are in love, but Liam is determined to follow his career as a horse vet, and Cassie is drawn by her wanderlust. She needs to follow her dream and travel the world.
Ten years later and Cassie returns because her beloved grandmother - Nanna is dying. She manages to get back from New Zealand just in time for the last few days of Nanna's life. She decides to stay in Sturcombe Bay after the funeral for two weddings of childhood friends. A chance meeting between the old flames Cassie and Liam reignites the emotions, and individually, they realise that they are still in love. However, Liam is still tied to his career as a horse vet and Cassie still needs to wander and is drawn back to New Zealand. Added to the complications is Robyn, the charming little daughter of Liam, who Cassie gradually bonds with, and Cassie's latest job offer in the antipodes.
Two weddings and a funeral later can love conquer all?
Great characters and a clever storyline make this a lovely romance story.

I hadn't realised this was book 2 of a series, but they appear to be interconnected standalone novels so there was nothing missing from not having read book 1 first.
Set in Devon, we meet Cassie, returning from 10 years of adventuring, back to the small-town she grew up in, and the past that she left behind, including ex Liam.
Chuck in a super cute five year old, well-meaning family members and an obstinate grandmother, you have the makings of a great story.
There are a few flashbacks throughout which further explained some situations.
The storyline was as you expect in this type of read, but the burn was a bit on the slower side to what I'd have preferred. There are a couple of spicy scenes, but nothing overly gratuitous - mores the pity in my reading enjoyment!
I really enjoyed the setting, characters and storyline, I thought it was a great summers read. I finished it in two sittings in less than 24hours and would absolutely recommend it.

I loved the H's little girl and she added a lot to the story. I read book 1 and this could be a standalone, but I think you'd like the secondary characters more if you read book 1.

The MC's have just a little interaction with each other. Were lovers for 6 months when she turned 18 and then she decides she wants to travel and leaves. She came across as selfish to me because she doesn't come home at all in the 10 years. Not until her 90-year-old grandma is near death.

Lovemaking described once near the end of the book. Heat level barely 3 out of 5. I didn't feel a connection to this couple. I really liked the H and the h was okay. I did enjoy the h's grandma too.

No cheating, no cliffhanger, HEA, no romance for me and a tad of spice. Little on drama and suspense, one crude word used. I can't improve on the blurb, just giving you extra tidbits to decide whether to purchase. (ljb)

This book was so sweet and had tonnes of charm. The story was excellent and very enjoyable to read.

The cover is lovely. It's beautifully designed. The colour palette is vibrant and all used colours pop. Excellent job! It was perfect for the book.

The book is written beautifully and flows perfectly. The descriptions are excellent and provides some lovely visuals.

The setting is the fictional town of Sturcombe Bay in Devon. It sounds like such a beautiful place. The British seaside town was a staple in family holidays for many years and I love reading about them!

The characters were wonderful. They were so rich and excelled in their roles. I loved Cassie and Liam. Their story was special and I love how it unfolded. Liam's daughter Robyn is cute as a button and I do she gets her 'tappoo' when she is 18!

I really recommend this book. It is part of a series but is perfect as a standalone too! I can't wait to read more.

This is book 2 in the series and after loving book one i couldn't wait to get stuck in again. Even though this is a part of a series it can easily be read as a standalone but of course i recommend reading the series in order, because it is such a cosy lovely feeling!

This time we meet Cassie and Liam. Liam is a single dad and the local vet and Cassie is back after ten years of seeing the world to look after her ailing grandmother. Cassie had once been in love with Liam and now that she is back he is doing his best to stay away from her, which is proving difficult as Cassie grows close to Liams daughter and as they end up spending time together again they see that the spark is still there. The only problem is that Cassie has a ticket booked to leave again in 6 weeks time....

A lovely story with a lovely cosy atmosphere and fab characters

Love it!

Coming Home to Sturcombe Bay is a heart-warming, sweet second chance romance with plenty to love. Cassie has returned home from her adventures to see her ailing grandmother before it is too late. Liam is caring for his little girl after a unfortunate accident took her mother. Liam is focused on his daughter and is not looking for a new love. But will a old love for Cassie stir up feelings and blossom? This book took me on quite the emotional rollercoaster one minute I was in fits of laughter and the next I was a blubbering mess! I feel like the characters become your treasured friends and I wanted to know everything about their lives. The plot is sad but happy at the same time. It's a new series for me that I am so happy to read every single book!

A Lovely Book

Ten years ago Cassie made the difficult decision to leave friends and family to travel the world. Now she is back to see her grandmother before it is too late, but will she be able to settle down now or will her love of adventure get the better of her again? One of the first people she sees is Liam. Her first love, who was broken hearted when she left, but picked up the pieces, married Natalie and had a lovely baby girl, Robyn, but he is now a single parent. When they meet up it is obvious the attraction is still there between them, but Liam is reluctant to start anything in case Cassie decides to leave again. I read this book in a day. There were some funny moments but it also brought tears to my eyes at times. A lovely book.

3.5* A relaxing holiday read

This Hallmark type novel has it all, endless summer days in a small Devonshire seaside town, a close family, catching up with old friends and a handsome ex.

After ten years of travelling and working in far off places, Cassie has returned to her home town for an extended stay with her family. When she comes face to face with Liam, her teenage love, she realises that she still cares deeply for him, but life is not straightforward. As a single father and the village vet, Liam is firmly based in Sturcombe Bay, and Cassie has her flight booked back to New Zealand in six weeks.

An uncomplicated plot which I found a gentle change to thrillers and murder mysteries.

Thank you to Susanne McCarthy, Joffee Books and NetGalley for an ARC of this book. All opinions are my own. ♡

₊˚⊹⋆ first thoughts: ummm i am a sucker for a good second chance romance. this is definitely going to be up my alley! can't wait to check this one out. updates soon! :)

₊˚⊹⋆ final thoughts: this is a very light hearted slow burn. and i do mean slooow burn. cassie & liam pine after one another for soo long before we get them together. it's a very sweet happy ending book. i wish i had read book 1 to really grasp some of the other characters in the book, but enjoy that the series can be read as standalones as well. robyn was the absolute star - maybe im biased due to my daughter lol. this was for sure a sweet read.

As I like stories about people who dated as teenagers meeting (and, of course, falling in love) again after several years, I knew I would enjoyed this book and I'm now pleased to report that yes, it was exactly what I wanted to read. I really liked Cassie, Liam, and also Liam's cute little girl. Additionally, as it's the second book set in the fictional small town called Sturcombe Bay, readers of the previous one get to spot a lot of familiar characters throughout this one, including the main couple and another one also formed in book 1, now getting married.

I received an advance copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

A very delightful second time around romance between young sweethearts who meet again ten years later.

Cassie and Liam and their families are attractively drawn characters and the story is very much a feel good love story, set on the English south coast. The widowed Liam now has a five year old daughter who has a central role in his life and the resultant anxiety for her in the event of any dating is his primary concern.

Highly recommended, it is in fact second in a series but stands entirely successfully on its own.

After ten years abroad, Cassie Channing returns to her seaside hometown of Sturcombe Bay to look after her grandmother — and ends up running into her old flame, Liam Ellis. Now a single dad and the local vet, Liam says he’s moved on... but of course, things are never that simple! As Cassie settles back into village life and bonds with Liam’s daughter, those old feelings between them start to bubble back up — along with a few unresolved issues from the past. With only six weeks before Cassie’s supposed to leave again, they have to decide if their love is worth a second shot.

This was my first time reading Susanne McCarthy, and overall, I found it an easy, enjoyable read. I did feel there were quite a few extra characters, and it took me a bit to get everyone straight, but once I did, it flowed nicely.

I really liked Cassie's sweet connection with her grandmother, and her growing bond with Liam’s daughter was lovely too. The romance between Cassie and Liam was engaging — though I have to admit, the ending felt a little rushed. I would've liked a bit more time to see things play out. Still, a heartwarming story with charming small-town vibes

This was a sweet, second chance romance from Susan McCarthy! I enjoyed reading about the English setting and countryside descriptions that were so vivid! The characters were incredibly likeable, relatable, and so easy to love! I especially loved the two MC's, Liam and Cassie and their characters! Overall, I enjoyed this one.
Spice: chapter 15!
CW: moderate language!

A lovely romance set in Devon. The heroine, Cassie, is well portrayed as a girl who longs to see the world and does. She leaves her love, Liam, but returns when her grandmother is near death. Once back her heart is unable to decide to stay or go. The ties are her friends, family and country. I loved how the author brought all these to life and right to the end you are not certain which way Cassie will go. Enjoy the journey!

A second chance at love after returning home ten years later. I liked parts of this but it lacked much interaction between the couple! And the ending was very rushed, feeling like it missed the mark.

Full disclosure - I received a copy of the book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review

A good summer read. Second Chance romance trope. Enjoyable story about Liam & Cassie in a delightful setting in a small coastal town in Devon, with enough jeopardy in the story that you didn’t know for certain until almost the end whether or not there would be an HEA.
