Vercingetorix is the story of a young man, a chieftain of the Gallic tribe of the Arverni, who successfully unites the other tribes to lead a rebellion against Roman rule. After witnessing the fate of his father, Celtillus, who tries to raise the whole of Gaul but is publicly put to death, Vercingetorix has to grab the crown from his uncle Gobanitio and the Arverni noblemen – the council of elders – and then persuade the leading tribal chieftains to come together and support his efforts.
He has to outwit the Roman military tactical genius, Julius Caesar, who with his ten legions has almost subdued the whole of Gaul. To defeat the Roman Commander, he adopts new tactics, using guerilla warfare against Caesar’s supply lines and only engaging his legions on terrain unfavourable to the Roman’s style of fighting. And all along the young Gallic general has to deal with the various forces opposed to his leadership, particularly from the Arverni’s main rivals, the Aedui, and when his advice is ignored, the consequence are often fatal.
Nevertheless, his personally trained army is able to inflict a stunning defeat on the Roman proconsul and he uses his cavalry to continually deny the legions access to their provisions. But will it be enough to defeat the Roman invaders?
