The last thing Brian expected was to find someone to touch his soul at a crime scene. He is a professional, and this is not the time for things to get messy… well, more than they already are. Kerry and the boys truly get under his skin… in the best way possible, but Brian has a job to do and that must take priority… for now.

Kerry’s priority is the boys, and Brian’s is finding out what happened to their mother. Each has information the other needs, so working together, they hope to figure out what happened, help the boys begin to heal, and stop a further threat that could tear this fragile family apart, Time is of the essence if they want to be able to build a family after all the pieces come together.

In this short story by Andrew Gray, Kerry Sutherland is notified that his sister is dead, and her two sons are with a trusted neighbor. The boys are suffering from the loss and even their dog becomes part of the evidence the police are gathering.

Kerry is a Child Psychologist and his sisters designated guardian for the boys. He gets the call from the trusted neighbor who tells him his sister is dead, and in the garage. So while they are living in a crime scene, there’s still danger as no one has been identified as the assailant. Detective Brian Morrow is the man in charge of the investigation. He’s confronted by Kerry who is dismayed the police have told the boys their mother is dead. He’s worked with the police for procedures on how to deal with children, and safeguarding their safety and mental health.

What he did not expect is to be so affected by Detective Morrow. Brian is a seasoned officer and is moved by the psychologist. The two play off each other in seeking information that the boys might have, while Kerry is working to ensure they are not traumatized more by police questioning or the ongoing investigation. There’s a strange man who speeds away after hovering across from their home, and Kerry is trying to help the youngest boy get his story out about what he saw happen to his mother.

This is a love story in the midst of this effort to solve the murder. Kerry and Brian have an attraction to each other, but it’s acted on away from the children. The dog, DNA, her youngest son all contribute to solving the crime. And with that, Kerry and Brian resolve to jointly raise the two boys in a new household made from love.

I really enjoyed this book, it’s a quick read but definitely has a good story and characters and I found myself totally invested in Kerry and Brian! It really has a lot of feeling packed into it.

Kerry is living in Seattle when he gets a call that his sister Caroline is dead and he is needed to come be with his two young nephews. Bring a child psychologist he should be prepared and able to handle these situations but it’s different when it’s your family. It also doesn’t help that when he arrives his nephews are horribly upset so of course he steps up and confronts the police on scene, and that includes Detective Brian. As they get the situation settled, Kerry learns that Brian is not the enemy and is actually a really good guy. The two actually form an easy connection but the timing is more than difficult. Brian is investigating the death of Kerry’s sister, which turns out to be murder and Kerry is trying to be there for his nephews and figure how they are all going to move forward.

I thought this was a really touching read! It’s not overly romance focused, it’s more about them coming together to grieve, heal and figure out who killed Caroline and in all of that Kerry and Brian find each other and real love. There is a sweetness and gentleness about this journey and I really felt like it fit these guys. Yes, there is a lot of love, between Brian and Kerry but also for the boys too and the family they all become together. Low angst but with a lot of feeling, a good read with a mix of mystery and romance.

I really liked these characters - Kerry, the uncle who dropped everything to be there for two terrified boys and Brian, the detective charged with finding out what happened to orphan the boys. Their connection was good, but really focused on so much else going on in their lives that I wish the book had been longer, so we could have seen more of the relationship growth and maybe some more interactions outside of the chaos. I also love the way Kerry and Brian were there for two little boys and how the kids needs were put above their own wants and needs... Sometimes a shorter story can encapsulate the story well, but this time I think it needed just a little bit more time to sell me on their HEA beyond the crisis.

THOUGHTS: This was an enjoyable, quick read. In this one, the main character, Kerry, is a child psychologist with a sister and two nephews. When his sister is murdered, he has to step in and help the youngsters deal with their loss, while also dealing with his own. It gets even more serious when they realize the 6-year-old actually saw the murder and the dog, Pebbles, got a piece of the killer when he bit him. Enter Brian, the cop assigned to the case. With Kerry’s help, they figure out who the killer is and take him down. Meanwhile, the two men fight their attraction, but eventually give in and let romance take over.

A quick read with a satisfying HEA ending.

Emotional And Loving

Kerry gets a call about his sister and has to leave to go be with his nephews. He meets Brian who is in charge of what's going on. It was an emotional journey watching this play out on what happens. Wanted to hug them all.

Brian grows closer to Kerry and the two boys Philip and Henry as well. He cared and started falling for the three of them. Kerry is tough but even being child psychologist its hard when its your own family needing the help.

Really loved the family that they make and how they help the boys and put away the bad guy. Another great book by Andrew Grey even if was short it hit in the feels. So glad read today.

Enjoyable novella about love emerging from tragedy. Kerry gets a call that changes his life. His sister is dead and he's now the guardian for his two young, traumatized nephews. Rushing to their home, he discovers that there is a crime investigation and it is likely his sister was murdered.

Brian is one of the lead detectives on the case. As such, he interacts with Kerry over some days. He's immediately attracted to Kerry, but does not act on it, as it is not the right time with such immense grief. As the crime is solved, the two men begin to take some solace in each other. This is a gentle story of healing and love for the two men and their little family.

Let me start by saying I hate that the author was able to make me cry so much reading this book. The book was a complete joy to read from beginning to end I enjoyed the fact of the chemistry of the characters the dynamic how the story flowed then density of the mystery and watching feelings develop for each other throughout solving the case of his sister's passing. This book was a complete joy to read My only complaint is that I want it more at the end of it I kind of wanted to see what else would happen what else was going on in their lives I hope that the author does come back and make another part two cuz the two leads were amazing characters and beautifully put together.

I tried...but it was dreadful. I enjoy some of Andrew Grey's books. This one was tedious. I felt like I was listening to an outline of a story. It was written something like this: "Kerry did this. Then he did that. Then he had an emotion. Then he had a new family. " Ugh.

I wanted to test out virtual voice. It's as creepy and awkward as I suspected. Any longer of a story, and I wouldn't have bothered finishing even if the mystery was unresolved. It wasn't worth finishing anyway.

Just don't folks. Just don't. If you like Andrew Grey, go find a book that was worth having Greg Bordeaux narrate.

Excellent book, Andrew. Kerry is a psychologist, and his sister Caroline is murdered, leaving two small boys behind. Kerry does what he can to help, and the policeman who arrives to solve the murder, Brian, does too. They realize they're attracted to each other, but there's a trial to go through first. Seems the murderer thought killing Caroline would mean he'd get custody of the older boy. That for sure doesn't happen, and the book ends with Brian and Kerry getting married and adopting the two boys.

A Who Done it MM

Well this was a first murder MM for me, not a lot of steam but a slowly growing relationship between investigating Police Officer Brian and Kerry Sutherland, a Psychologist whose sister Caroline has been found murdered in the garage of her home. Kerry is Uncle to Phillip and Henry, her two sons.

As the case progresses it’s clear that Brian and Kerry feel the attraction between them, but take it slow until the culprit is found.

There was no hot steamy passion on page, just fade to black once the lights in the bedroom went off.

The Mystery Of Life

This story of a mystery about a murder of a sister that opens into a love story. The brother has to come take care of his two nephews, help find the killer and begin to try to help his nephews in the loss of their mother. The story also develops a background of feelings for the detective assigned to the case, and leads to both discovering their feelings for each other. A very great story that is very interesting and old fashioned romance ending in the best way.

Nice story with a good plot and nice characters.
The only reason why I didn't give a higher rate is that, despite the tragedy and the death of a sibling, the book wasn't emotional. I expected more drama, tension and struggles (especially regarding the children), instead it was a bit bland.
The love story part was like that too. The MC were undeniably attracted to each other but I needed more romance and passion.
I still recommend it since it's a quick lovely read.

Kerry and Brian…

Something has happened, and Kerry is a Psychologist who must go to take care of his sister’s two boys. Brian is a Policeman on the case.
We get a tale of mystery and loss.
The men are drawn together and begin a meaningful romance.
We see the investigation, the family bond being made and the interactions.
I like author Andrew Grey’s characters, the hot sexiness, and truly marvelous storytelling.
ENJOY !

Sweet, relatively low angst story

This is a quick read, sweet, low angst story. A detective investigating the murder of a young mother falls for the brother of the victim who is now the guardian of her two boys. It’s an insta-connection story. Both MCs are likable and you want to root for their HEA. The book does a good job, it seems to me, addressing child victims of crime and their mental health.

"Having His Back" is a quick read and exactly what I needed to enjoy right now, considering I'm stuck in the middle of two multi-book sagas! The story is a delight, typical Andrew Grey, in that even though there's trouble afoot and possibilities galore of how the relationship could fail, it doesn't. But, also typical for this author, the twists and turns are surprising, titillating, and led to a HEA, which, after the two sagas I'm involved in, was a breath of fresh air.

I was honestly bored while reading Having His Back by Andrew Grey. The story didn’t really pull me in, and I struggled to stay interested. What did hit me emotionally was the kids—losing their mom was heartbreaking, and I felt bad for them. Unfortunately, the rest of the story just didn’t leave much of an impact on me.

If you are into murder mystery along with a growing mm romance then you'll like this story. An unexpected early morning call changed child psychologist Kerry Sutherland's whole world and a nightmare began. It's a quick but gripping read, you can't help but get totally invested in the lives of these two men and at the same time absorbed in the investigation.

The characters are sympathetic but why was not the first and main thing they did get access to her phone calls, texts, and emails? I got to 62% of the book before anything like that was mentioned - and it was just for pictures. It took me way out of the story as they are all puzzling about who she might have dated or been in contact with - hello, look at her phone!

I love these characters. You have a hot detective and a sexy child phycologist that just inherited his 2 young nephews.

The kids are cute and there is an adorable dog.
The storyline is intriguing with a budding relationship and touch of mystery.
Another great book that's not real long so you can kill a few hours without the feels.

suspense, romance and found family

I enjoyed this read about a man suddenly to take custody of his nephews when his sister is murdered. It was a slow burn and I liked that fact that both mcs were so good with the young boys. It was a feel good book with a bit of suspense in the mix. I loved the new found family they created.

Classic Romance

A well crafted, classic romantic storyline, good character development, no angst and low drama. The ending is as expected, but the journey to reach it remains enjoyable.

It felt like book was written with AI. Excessive use off poorly used aphorisms and phrases (under his skin used fur times). Use of both “mama” and “mommy” by the same character. Does not feel like Andrew Grey’s writing.

From tragedy comes love 💕

Well written and heartwarming. A police detective helps solve a murder mystery and finds a family to love. It almost comes together too quickly…I wanted more of this family’s story. But it felt good as it is.

Great quick read!

Trauma, drama, and easy love. Always fun when two characters get together and it just works! In this case, because there are two young boys involved it’s sweet to watch the “family” develop.
Andrew Grey has done it again!🫶❤️
