Savannah Sleuths #1

Beyond the Shadows

Rate this book
They solved a murder before prom—now they’re retired, nosy as ever, and dead set on cracking one last case before someone signs them up for chair yoga and a senior discount.

When Emma Lynn Whitmore returns to her childhood home in Savannah after losing her husband, she expects peace, maybe a little porch-sitting—not a fifty-year-old mystery clawing its way out of the attic. A faded photograph, a broken promise, and a name no one’s dared mention in decades all point to one Delilah didn’t run away. She vanished.

Teaming up with her old high school partners-in-crime-solving—sharp-tongued Margaret and quietly brilliant Graham—Emma Lynn dives headfirst into a Southern tangle of missing land deeds, whispered family names, and secrets buried deeper than a Lowcountry grave.

Armed with charm, determination, and a collective disregard for their doctor’s advice, the trio sets out to finish what Delilah started—no matter who’s still trying to keep it buried.

Perfect for fans of cozy mysteries with heart, Southern sass, and sleuths who’ve traded curfews for reading glasses—but haven’t lost their taste for trouble.

I very seldom write a review, and never have I written a negative one. In this case I must speak up. Never have I read a book with so many metaphors and similes. Every page contains multiple instances of “like” and “as if” as well as the overuse of personification. I have read many of Veronica Mixon’s mysteries and have enjoyed them. Has she always written this way and I didn’t notice, or is this a new phenomenon? Either way, I could not read more than about 15% of this book and won’t be reading any more by this author.

This was one of those books that you enjoy on a rainy day when you are all tucked up at home. Just the right amount of suspense. Love the references to Southern culture. A quick and easy read.

INTENSE Drama with Sass.
I really liked this story that had sassy southern "charm" and sarcasm. Emma Lynn was charming, astute, and she noticed things that others didn't. She began to have some prophetic dreams of Delilah that surprise Emma !. That stirred her even more to dig for the truth.
Emma Lynn, the southern way of saying names down there reminded me of what happens when my husband goes with me "down south." That's right, I'm a Northerner. But I love the south. I just don't want my name spoken with my middle name included. That's why family don't know what it is. Lol.

Emma pulls in her sassy, talented friend Margaret, who works in the library and knows how to pull the very information that they need. She's direct and blunt but also caring when it comes to Emma and Graham. Emma's other friend, Graham is Super-smart and compassionate and very easy to like. I almost made the title of this review- "Emma, friends & Murder to be solved." Because they do. With cunning, cleverness and humor. I loved that They weren't going to let the Vanishing of Delilah Grace Hart, go quietly into the night.
Delilah Hart and her daughter Eva Hart Simmons, were such sad people in the story. Eva's epileptic son was also stolen from because of all of this. Stolen from and attempts to erase all of them as though they never lived, loved or thrived in any ways at all. They were poor but that's no excuse to what they did to them ! To steal land from them to prosper from it and to kill to keep it ! And the sleuths and Eva just aren't going to put up with it even when things get tough and they do !
Smug, Mason Blake was designed for me to hate and I did ! Him and those who helped him ! There were several surprises about that and I loved that too. They were being watched and being sent secret notes and warning. Short but threatening... saying in one form or another, "Stop digging."
On a finally note, although they were SO MANY witty things spoken and written in this story, but I do have a favorite. When hysterically but oh so stern, direct, proper, caring Margaret had this said about her by Emma. "If this mysterious messenger thought a few cryptic notes would undo us, he really, really should've read Margaret's Yelp review" I almost fell down laughing ! Had to read it over a few times and giggle.!
There is also a mention of the first book where this group first solved a murder, it was free so I got it. It's called "Buried Beneath the Ivy" by Veronica Mixon."

I read this book through Netgalley. And I'm glad that I did.

As a 40-year Savannahian, I was looking forward to cracking open Beyond the Shadows by Veronica Mixon, since it’s set in my town. I wanted to like it but came away disappointed. Now, having had a week or so to digest it, I figured out why.

The book lacks an authentic sense of place. Because of this lack of depth in the setting, the characters seem to walk through scenes that could be in almost any small city. Sure, it mentions locations in/around Savannah, but only to the degree displayed by someone who visited for about a week and returned home with a memory of places. In at least one instance, the geography was completely wrong, though it’s only noticeable to someone who’s lived here. Non-residents won’t notice, and probably won’t care.

Another let-down was a lack of justice. I’m accustomed to mysteries in which a culprit is revealed and faces the consequences of their crime. I didn’t get that here. Answers were provided, people were exposed, and closure was provided to a degree, but the actual instigators of a 50-year-old conspiracy were long dead and buried. While their heirs may have shared in the benefits, it’s not as if they can be held accountable. As a result, the ending was unsatisfying.

Mixon displays a wide repertoire of similes and idioms, many of which are rather witty. Perhaps it’s the way she (or someone she knows) actually talks, but not apparently her character of Emma. Emma may “think” that way in internal monologues, but it doesn’t come through in her dialogue.

Despite the book’s shortcomings, I’m happy to keep an open mind. I’ll read the latest in the series next, to see how much the author has improved before deciding if I wish to read more.

Ghost writer Emma Lynn comes home to take care of her late grandmother’s affairs. She catches up with her childhood friends, Margaret and Graham. It becomes patently obvious that if she wants any peace, she is going to have to deal with some ghosts. Savannah is famous for its ghosts but this one is not her Gran but a friend of her Gran who disappeared in 1971. Delilah was digging into some shady doings amongst the city’s movers and shakers and as she got closer and closer to the corruption, it threatened to swallow her. Gran and Delilah knew the risks of poking that bear. As Emma Lynn finds the “bread crumbs” left for her, she becomes determined to find out what really happened and bring those responsible to justice- or at least shine a bright light on their evil deeds.

Both Margaret and Graham are game and soon all three are getting threats which convinces them they are onto something nefarious. What those trying to keep the secrets don’t realize is that these three don’t back down. With a southern talent for colourful metaphors, the book weaves a fascinating tale of the little guy standing up to the powers that be and, after 50 years, winning. I do enjoy stories that draw me into them and this one did. I look forward to the next adventure of the dynamic trio. Five purrs and two paws up.

The writing style was something that I really enjoyed in the first quarter of the book. I would have to delve into my old English grammar books to figure out what the actual terminologies I should use to describe the descriptions the author used but I'm short on time so I decided to go with a lot of metaphors.

The leading lady is a newly widowed lady who has lost her grandmother too and is trying to come to terms with her grief. She is visiting her childhood home when she stumbles upon an old photo and related memorabilia that indicates something big once happened to someone she knew and that something was hidden over several decades.

Painstaking investigation is carried out and as I mentioned earlier, the writing style worked well for a time and then those asides got a little too much for me. The corruption scandal is pretty straightforward without much of a mystery. The investigation of three old friends is to gather all the evidence and cross all the ts before going public.

It was a little slow going at times but I'm glad I tried it. For people who like the narrative style, this will be a truly enjoyable book with its own thriller-like moments.

I received an ARC thanks to Netgalley and the publishers but the review is entirely based on my own reading experience.

The story is based on the overly used trope with the main character (an author) finding something in the attic. This leads to a cold case mystery that she investigates, though we never really learn what exactly happened. The writing is very jokey with lots of hokey similes and metaphors. But at the same time, it feels overly dramatic, with the main characters getting threats and being followed (though nothing ever comes of it). The author does a nice job with the characterization of one of the sidekicks, and with building the atmosphere. (She includes lots of smells.) I didn't care for the woo woo element of premonitions, ghosts, and messages from dead people through dreams. Nor for the main character's apparently magical ability to remember conversations from when she was 9 years old. Otherwise, the book was readable.
I won a free copy of this book (thanks to the author & publisher!) and am voluntarily providing an honest review.

Emma Lynn Margaret and Graham, friends from school now well a lot older but none the less inquisitive and determined.

When Emma returns home well if you've read the spill you will know all that and if you've read anything from Veronica you will all know or expect a great reading experience. This is a bit different to her usual style more cosy than normal. But still a great read none the less. The 3 friends have unearthed a trail that was laid years ago and some want it left that way but our 3 intrepid friends just won't let it be. So its with some angst, and plenty of turns this novel will keep you engrossed till the end just it time for part 2 of what's looking like an enticing series

So i want to highly recommended this to you a absolutely fully deserved 5 stars me.

Emma Lynn, Margaret and Graham are three native Savannahians who reconnect when Emma Lynn returns to Savannah after the death of her husband and Gran. She's come to clean out her grandmother's home. A home that she grew up in alongside her Gran who took on raising her when she proved to be too much for her mother's lifestyle.
But, what she finds is a mystery that dates back 50 years and is entangled in Savannah history and corruption. Delilah went missing but Emma Lynn unearths several bread crumbs that will lead the trio on an interesting path to determine what happened to her when she raised too many questions.
If you're from Savannah or have visited the "Hostess City", you'll be checking to see what mentioned businesses and landmarks truly exist.
Follow the trip as they pull all the puzzle pieces together and solve the mystery.

Emma returns to Savannah following the death of her husband. In going through her deceased grandmother's attic, she finds clues to a 50 year disappearance. She teams with her librarian friend and a childhood friend and neighbor in investigating and following the clues.

This book is very well written, with great descriptors, and the author has written many similar stories. The characters are well developed, and the author has a knack of making you feel what the characters feel.

There were no real plot twists, and the plot was a bit methodical. In other words, I believe that the author depended more on tension and suspense than in twists or surprises. In my opinion, the suspense did not manage to carry the day.

Emma Lynn is the most shrewd, perceptive, witty, family-and-friends-oriented old lady I have ever seen! Even at the age of 63 and living out her retirement years in her good old Savannah, she actually desires to solve a disappearance mystery of a person she only met at the age of 9! No wonder the Savannah Sleuths see her as the gem of the group. Together with her best friend Margaret and neighbor Graham, they seek to expose the skeleton in the cupboard no matter the cost! Stay tuned for more Savannah Sleuths books.

Beyond The Shadows is an ode to the power of a grandmothers love to reach out beyond the grave and the.strength of lifelong friendships. Eloquently written, the essence of the Deep South is softly imbued in the thoughts and actions of Emma Lynn as she delves into the years old sudden disappearance of her grandmother’s dearest friend Delilah. The mystery deepens and the tension mounts as more clues are unearthed. Throughout this journey of sleuthing, Emma Lynn unfolds her own precious memories of the grandmother who gently but surely gave her the life skills which she must now call upon.

Thank you NetGalley and BooksGoSocial for the eARC.
This is such a lovely read, I enjoyed it immensely. The protagonist Emma Lynn is in her 60's, which is a nice change, and back in Savannah, where she and 2 old friends are trying to solve a secret. But someone is determined to stop them ... but the plucky threesome can't be stopped.
The writing is great, you really get a sense of Savannah, there's gentle humor throughout and a sense of human kindness that can't be stopped by any means.
Read it, it is worth every word, because it makes you feel good!

Slow Southern Mystery

This one took me by complete surprise. The descriptive prose flowed from the page so thick I could taste the sweet tea and smell the magnolias. It added a sense of depth and richness not usually found. Returning to her hometown after the death of her husband and the grandmother who raised her, Emma finds a mystery. The disappearance of a dear friend of her deceased grandmother. Armed with her investigative writers eye, and the help of two old friends, she goes after the truth. This is a well written and even better plotted mystery.

Loved the book, where the city of Savannah is a character that lives, breathes, and slowly reveals secrets long-buried.

Emma Lynn and her 2 best friends for the last 40-plus years dig deep into the past to find the truth about a woman who was silenced and made to disappear without a trace.

The author has a fantastic voice, and the book is full of wit, charm, and laugh out loud moments. This author is definitely at the top of my favorites list!

Thank you to NetGalley and Sapelo Publishing for granting me the pleasure of reading and reviewing this book.

This author writes the most beautiful descriptions and similes. Their characters are perfection (for a cozy mystery)- well rounded, enjoyable, believable, make you smile.
However, like sugar, too many similes and descriptions end up no longer being enjoyable and the book would only have been at least half as long if they had been removed.
The characters were also overly dramatic. They behaved like something horrible was going to happen all the time.

I will most likely continue with the series. The author does a great job in developing her characters, and she captures Savannah beautifully. The three star rating is based more on what I perceive as plot holes. The first chapter fully jumps into the mystery, but logically there is something missing.

Also, if I had a dollar for every simile, I would be able to afford my next vacation to Savannah. Sometimes more is just more.

Mysterious

I think this is an excellent mystery. It's filled with great descriptions of the city of Savannah almost allowing you to feel like you might be there. The shadowy moss and ivy hanging off trees leaving you with a feeling of ghosts. The unraveling of buried secrets and lies that officials and businessmen have tried to bury and erase. I found it to be a very intriguing and interesting mystery.

i never write reviews of what I read, and I hate to start with a negative one - but I must. The idea of being set in Savannah hooked me, but I was terribly disappointed. I spend about an hour in my car each day to and from work, so I often combine Kindle and Audible versions to listen to part of the book. This title has a "virtual" reader (AI reader). Between the overuse of similes and metaphors and the ridiculous pronunciation of the AI reader, I could not finish this book.

This is book 1 in. the new series, Savannah Sleuths. Emma returns to Georgia after her husband dies and is cleaning out the attic. She discovers that a friend from high school didn't move away, she disappeared. She re-connects with some friends and together they try to solve the 50 year old mystery. They uncover missing land deeds, and secrets that no one wants uncovered. Looks like a good series with mature characters.

This book was completely different from most books I read. Masterful sharing of the steps to revealing murder and secrets. Love the three characters and how they work as a team. If you love mysteries with psychological suspense and are looking for a different kind of story then check out Savannah Sleuths by Veronica Mixon.

I enjoyed reading about mature women (or any sex) that show intelligence, solid planning and the will
to work together o reach their goal. even though they feared what comes next they went ahead and
took the hard and scary step to win out. The characters were believable, facing painful outcomes
and just pain. I would recommend this book to my kids who all have e-readers.

What a great story!

Loved this, read it in one sitting which I rarely do but I simply needed to have the complete story! I have read the prequel and was impressed with the style of writing, the characters and a bit of Savannah history, so was definitely enticed to read more. Will be definitely reading the rest of the series as well as more from this author!

enjoyed this immensely

I was born in Savannah but grew up in England and to this day, I’ve never been back to see my birthplace. I’m 64 so that a long time not to want to see it. This book has made me want to visit with the description of the old moss swaying from the trees and the cosiness of her home.

Keeps you guessing

A mystery that's not scary or vulgar. Violence is from the past. Three friends take on the task to find who done it. Their friendship and Savannah make this a read. Not going to give you bad dreams.
