Ellis Dangerfield has recently learned her life is a lie. Desperate to start afresh, she applies for a position as secretary to a demanding, widowed marquess. Never mind that she must pose as a man to get the job—Ellis is hiding far worse secrets.
After losing his wife—and, perhaps more gutting, learning of her unfaithfulness—Roman Garrick has sworn off human connection. To avoid his pain, he buries himself in rebuilding his family’s ruined fortunes. When he discovers his brilliant new secretary is actually a woman, he should dismiss her immediately. Instead, he’s captivated.
Faced with an unwanted and dangerous attraction, Roman and Ellis struggle to maintain their professional relationship while also trying to resist their desires. Neither is willing to compromise the vows they’ve made to remain emotionally aloof. But when Ellis reveals the truth of her scandalous parentage and a shocking secret from the past surfaces, their chance at happiness hangs in the balance.
Darcy Burke is the USA Today Bestselling Author of sexy, emotional historical and contemporary romance. Darcy wrote her first book at age 11, a happily ever after about a swan addicted to magic and the female swan who loved him, with exceedingly poor illustrations. Join her Reader Club at http://www.darcyburke.com/readerclub.
A native Oregonian, Darcy lives on the edge of wine country with her guitar-strumming husband, their two hilarious kids who seem to have inherited the writing gene, two Bengal cats and a third cat named after a fruit. In her “spare” time Darcy is a serial volunteer enrolled in a 12-step program where one learns to say “no,” but she keeps having to start over. Her happy places are Disneyland and Labor Day weekend at the Gorge.
This is my 59th book by Darcy Burke. I have been reading her since 2015. I consider her one of my favorites and since then I’ve read all her books in my genre, I just wait for her next new release to come out. I have really been enjoying this series. Although they've all been good, I have Book 1, 2 and 3 on my favorite books read list. Can't wait to read this one.
I really liked this book. I liked Roman and Ellis. I liked the storyline and their characters. The story with all the details of her family were crazy. I love how appreciative Roman was of Ellis' ability as his secretary. Overall a good read.
I love when female characters are virginal and not 18 in historical romance so I loved our lead character. She is dealing with feeling abandoned but also fear of being abandoned thus she flees. She goes undercover as a man to earn what she is worth so that she can get some savings and really flee. Enter Roman, a widow who was hurt in the past but immediately interested in the backside of his new secretary. He was caring, kind, and loving. He protected and stood up for her. What a wonderfully supportive man.
I love her friend group and that they call her out on her fleeing ways. 3.75 overall.
Darcy out did herself with this one. This series is best read in order. Each book has background and history that follows to the next book. But none of the books have a cliff hanger. Ellis Dangerfield has lived in the Duke of Henlow home as a companion to his daughter Minerva. He opened his house to her as their parents were best friends. She was able to take lessons along with Min. Life was not easy as the Duchess was always mean to her. But Min and the rest of the household loved her and treated her well. When she overhears an argument between Min and the Duchess, she is shocked by what she hears. Her whole life has been a lie. Knowing now she is illegitimate, she runs from the only house she has had since childhood. The duke offers to help her, but she refuses it. She needs to find employment that will pay enough for her to live on her own. Thru Min’s brother Sheff she knows a friend of his, Roman the Marquess of Keele, is looking for a secretary. She has more than enough experience to do this job. Only problem is she needs to be a man. With a reference from the duke and disguised as a man she applies for the job as Mr. Ellis. Roman, has been thru a lot, a marriage that never should have been. The unfaithfulness of his wife, then her death. He has left society and is rebuilding his fortunes and his estates. He has turned his back on romance and horrible secretaries who have caused more problems. When he meets Mr. Ellie, he is shocked by how efficient and intelligent he is. Even though something seems off about him, he hires him on the spot. The only thing that could keep Ellis from taking the job is that Roman needs him/she to live in his house and be ready to work long hours! Darcy gives us a lot plenty of laughs with fake beards and actions man would never do but ladies do all the time. When Roman finds her out, the real story starts and it’s wonderful. How both Ellis and Roman deal with their past, feelings, secrets and families good and bad. Both learn that families are not always the ones you are born into but people who love you for who you are. There are a lot of ups and downs, an emotion roller coaster. Grab a copy and get started; you will not be able to put it down. If only all of us could have a Roman of our own, he is one very special fellow. I received an ARC from the author and wish to thank her. This is my honest opinion and am freely giving it.
The Marquess Demands by Darcy Burke Rogue Rules #6
~ Another one bites the dust…another once-a-rogue, that is ~ Relaxing way to spend the day and nice addition to the series ~
What I liked: * Ellis Dangerfield: ex-companion to Min, adoptive parents died when young, taken in by Duke of Henlow, recently learned who her biological parents are, angry, self-worth issues, processing information, seeks to be independent, attracted to Roman * Roman Garrick: Lord Keele, Marquis, widow, cuckold, working to restore marquisate for former solvency, friends with and in partner in publishing business with his father-in-law, hires Ellis but questions “his” effeminacy, attracted to Ellis but needs a wealthy bride * Roman’s ability to realize Ellis was what he needed to organize and improve his life both as a secretary and later…as more * The way Roman kept secrets, didn’t push, found out who Ellis really was, and handled other issues in their relationship * Compassion for Ellis and the reason she made the decisions she did…even when I didn’t agree with some of them * Catching up with some of the previous characters in the series and remembering their stories * The strong friendship of the group of women that created the “Rogue Rules” * The Lacey family: Roman’s in-laws were the parents he wished he had and their younger daughter like a sister, supportive, loving, wealthy, and kind * The secondary romance of Margot Lacey and Pritchard * That the evil Countess was thwarted and (hopefully) banished forever * Thinking about who will have their story told next and how many delightful books there will be in this series.
What I didn’t like: * The emotional pain/trauma both Ellis and Roman carried from their past * Rowland Harker: hedonist, artist, serial philanderer, careless with the emotions of his lovers, poor father, more than one by-blow including Ellis, selfish, * The duchess: vicious, vindictive, grasping, abusive, evil, cuckolded her husband, had but never loved her illegitimate daughter, blackmailer, hedonist, despicable
Did I enjoy this book? Yes Would I read more in this series? Yes
Thank you to the author for the ARC- This is my honest review.
Ellis Dangerfield’s world crumbles when she overhears a conversation that reveals her life is a lie. Determined to take control of her own fate, she runs away, reinvents herself, and, in a stroke of either genius or utter chaos, applies to be Roman Garrick’s secretary, Marquess of Keele…while dressed as a man. Beard included.
Roman Garrick is focused on rebuilding his fortunes after a disastrous marriage to an unfaithful wife. He’s sworn off feelings, romance, and clueless secretaries—until Mr. Ellis shows up, efficient as a Swiss watch and just as unexpected. Roman’s thrilled, of course, blissfully unaware that his new right-hand man might need regular glue touch-ups on that beard. Neither of them expects the slow-burn spark between a guarded marquess and a determined woman hiding in plain sight.
Darcy Burke delivers her signature charm with bonus giggles—between Ellis’s facial-hair fiascos and her constant near-misses of being unmasked, I was smiling quite often. Their journey is full of witty banter, delightful twists, and sizzling tension. But beneath the humor lies a heartfelt journey: two people haunted by betrayals, secrets, and the fear of opening their hearts again.
When Ellis’s scandalous backstory and Roman’s skeletons waltz out of the closet, all bets are off. The payoff is equal parts swoony, scandalous, and satisfying.
Another stellar entry in the series, packed with emotional depth, clever writing, and characters you can’t help but adore. If you enjoy romances with humor, heart, and a touch of mystery, this is a must-read—I can’t wait for the next book!
I voluntarily read and reviewed an Advanced Reader's Copy of this book; all thoughts and opinions are my own.
Ellis was dealt quite a blow in the fifth book of the series (Until the Rake Surrenders--though the family drama really started in book 4, As the Earl Likes, so make sure you've read all of them to fully appreciate what happens here) and I was anxious to find out where she would go and what she would do next.
Posing as a man and working for a widowed marquess is a choice with so many risks--but of course it's a Rogue Rules book, so naturally it all works out in the end. But the journey there? It was delicious...if sometimes a tad bit frought. Both Ellis and Roman have secrets; I especially loved that even when he accidentally discovered some of hers, he respected her wishes and not only kept them of her but didn't push for more. I also loved that family played such a big role here for both of them--neither were born into an ideal one, but by the end of the book they both had the family they both chose and deserved <3
Now--do we really have to wait almost a year for Iona's book? Sigh...
Rating: 4 1/2 stars / A
I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book.
Roman Garrick, Marquess of Keele, is sharp, stubborn, & entirely too sure of himself… until one determined woman strolls into his life & rearranges his priorities like she’s alphabetizing his library. He’s got that Darcy Burke blend of brooding competence and “oh no, I’m catching feelings” energy.
Ellis Dangerfield walks to the beat of her own drummer - she's smart, capable, & absolutely done with men who underestimate her. She’s the kind of heroine who can outwit a marquess before breakfast & still look fabulous doing it. She brings warmth, wit, and a spine of steel. So..... dressing as a man to apply for the position of his secretary will be a snap, or will it?
A marquess with a plan, needs a secretary, hires a man - who ends up being a woman disguised as a man. What starts as a straightforward boss/secretary setup quickly turns into a partnership brimming with playful banter, hidden truths, & a slow-burn attraction that just can’t keep its pace. There’s a mystery threaded through the romance, a few emotional gut-punches, & the kind of tension Darcy Burke excels at, the “I shouldn’t want you, but here we are anyway” variety.
This was a delightful, witty, & emotionally rich addition to the Rogue Rules series. Darcy Burke delivers a romance full of spark, sass, and heart - exactly the kind of story that keeps you up past your bedtime muttering “just one more chapter.” If you love clever heroines, stubborn heroes, & a romance that simmers before it boils, this one hits the mark. I voluntarily read and reviewed an Advanced Reader's Copy of this book; all thoughts and opinions are my own.
I just adore the Rogue Rules series, and this is a great addition to it. Ellis and Roman have a swoon-worthy love story that begins as Ellis poses as a man to work as a secretary for Roman, a marquess. She never expects to fall for him, but that's exactly what happens, and I do not blame her one bit. Roman is a fantastic hero! I loved his intelligence, his sense of responsibility, and especially his opinions on women who want careers and purpose beyond marriage. That aspect of his character really stood out to me and made him even more appealing.
Ellis is great too, and so easy to root for. She and Roman both go through a lot of emotional growth over the course of the story, as they face the traumas from their pasts. For Ellis, after learning the truth about her parentage, her entire world is turned upside down. She is shaken and hurt, but she doesn't give up or fall apart. Instead, she looks for a way forward, even if it means disguising herself as a man to survive and start over. Ellis is capable, smart, and observant, but she also hides a lot of herself, both literally and figuratively.
Of course, I adored the romance between Ellis and Roman. It was so swoon-worthy!! Their growing attraction is filled with longing, temptation, and a lot of restraint, which added so much sexual tension to the story. I loved their connection, their sizzling chemistry, and their shared love of books and literature. Their relationship feels like a partnership, and I love how supportive they are of each other. They seem to understand and accept each other on a deep level that's even more special considering everything they've both been through.
I also really loved Roman’s in-laws. They are so wonderful. Warm, loving, and supportive, they bring a sense of family and comfort that contrasts nicely with how isolated both Roman and Ellis feel at times. There are major found family vibes, and though Ellis feels alone for much of the book, she finds there are many who love and stand by her. The plots involving the publishing house, Roman's sister-in-law, and the past generation’s mistakes were also intriguing, and it was interesting to see how certain elements of the story connected in unexpected ways. It definitely added more complications to an already complex situation!
Overall, this was such an enjoyable read. It had romance, emotion, secrets, and some great messages about literature, sexism, and more. Darcy Burke remains my most-read historical romance author for a reason, and this book is another reminder of why I love her stories so much!
The next instalment in the Rogue Rules book by Darcy Burke did not disappoint. Since the Marquess Demands sees Ellis Dangerfield overhearing the woman who has treated her so badly all her life is her mother, and she is her illegitimate daughter. Deciding that this is the ultimate betrayal, Ellis embarks on a decision to seek her independence and work for a living. When an advertisement appears for a widowed marquess looking for a new secretary, she jumps at the opportunity, while dressed as a man.
Roman Garrick, fourth Marquess of Keele, had to marry for money when his family’s coffers were to let. He marries the daughter of a tradesman and even though the marriage was not a love match, he grows to love his wife. He is dealt a sharp blow when he realises his wife was in love with someone else. Following her death, he decides to spend more time with his business and is delighted when he meets his new secretary who is everything he is looking for – efficient, capable, and more than able to handle the truckload of work the marquess has outstanding.
Things are moving along swimmingly until Roman realises that Ellis is a woman! The chemistry between the two is good and the feelings that develop between them is lovely to read. I thoroughly enjoyed Ellis’ and Roman’s story and look forward to the next instalment with eager expectation – maybe Ms Burke would consider writing Iona’s story a little quicker please.
I received an ARC from the author with thanks and submit my honest review voluntarily.
I have wanted to give Ellis Dangerfield huge hugs for a long time. She has been grossly mistreated for the majority of her life and when she learns the family secret she does what I would have done as well, run. Run far and try to find a way for my life to make sense going forward. Not to mention try to find a way to deal with the MASSIVE betrayal of a parent and utter disgust of both my parents. Her plan could have worked, but it had holes like Swiss cheese and her employer was youngish and observant.
This series has been amazing and I look forward to each new story. This one especially because Ellis has been a favorite character throughout. She is quiet and has an inner strength that serves her well. She is smart and extremely observant. She has a grace about her that makes her instantly likeable. Ellis has been given marvelous opportunities and education that make her ultimate running plan possible, not to mention a glowing recommendation from the Duke of Henlow.
Roman Garrick, fourth Marquess of Keele, needs a secretary to help him repair the chaos and mess left by his previous secretary. He is also still trying to repair the financial damage his father left the estate in and that is no small task. Thankfully he has wonderful in-laws that still are a part of his life despite the death of their daughter, his wife. He hires someone who is very efficient, knowledgeable and also giving him cause to wonder about himself.
When Ellis's secret is exposed the journey they embark on allows them both to heal their hearts, show them they ARE worthy of love and give them each the HEA neither of them thought possible. Together they are an amazing couple. They complete each other and have a grand passion they didn't know could exist.
With the help of their friends, which are a fabulous group that it is fun to visit with again, they manage to contain Ellis's parents and take away their ability to continue to hurt their children. I found myself wanting a bit more drastic results for the duches...exile to maybe America??? This series has such a wonderful tribe for the women and the introduction of Romain's sister-in-law makes me hope for many more adventures and visits with this sisterhood of amazing women and the men who love them. Thank you, Ms.Burke, for this awesome world you continue to share with us, your readers!!
Disclaimer: I received a copy of this book through BookFunnel, all thoughts and opinions are my own and left voluntarily.
Ms. Ellis Dangerfield has secrets. She has left her home without telling loved ones where she has gone, and disguised herself in a quest to make her own path. Intelligent and determined, to support herself, she needs to find employment. She has no desire to go into service, to be a governess, a seamstress, or any of the traditional jobs open to women in her day. Ellis disguises herself as a man to apply for a job as a personal secretary to a marquess. Lord Roman Garrick is a busy man. A widower, he works night and day repairing the mess that his father left him, while at the same time working with a publishing house owned by his former father in law. After his previous marriage, Roman has no desire to ever love again. Ellis is hired by Roman who believes she is a man, at least until a very telling day at the office. It seems that Ellis, being a delicate feminine beauty, isn't the most masculine of men. This is where the problem begins...
Yet another piece of the engaging Rules for Rogue's series, this tale had the reader enjoying the anticipation of that first look, touch, and kiss. ( I could hear that song in my head....)Ms. Burke wrote a wonderful story about two people who could have missed out on a great love if not for taking a leap. I highly recommend this book and am looking forward to the next in the series.
Ellis Dangerfield has recently learned her life is a lie. Desperate to start afresh she runs & applies for a position as secretary to a demanding, widowed marquess. Never mind that she must pose as a man to get the job. After losing his wife—and, perhaps more so he buries himself in rebuilding his family’s ruined fortunes. When he discovers his brilliant new secretary is actually a woman, he should dismiss her immediately. Instead, he’s captivated. The sixth book in the series & whilst it could be read on its own I’d recommend at least reading the previous book to fully appreciate it. I’ve loved Ellis throughout the series & she came into her own in this book, she’s strong, resilient, intelligent & wants to be loved. I also loved Roman who has been hurt but gradually opens his heart, he’s also stubborn & hardworking. The chemistry between the couple sizzled but they also liked & respected each other. Their journey to a HEA wasn’t easy especially when secrets were revealed. I adored how her ‘family’ were firmly in her court & Ellis realised she had a very supportive family. A very well written, unputdownable romance which ticked all the boxes for me I voluntarily read and reviewed a special copy of this book; all thoughts and opinions are my own
Enjoyed both the H/h and how secrets had them questioning relationships. So many twists, surprises and turns that kept me turning the pages. Great main and secondary characters making you realize, family doesn't have to mean blood relations.
The stories build as you go along with the different stories of the characters. To fully appreciate where our h had to endure, you'd get more enjoyment reading at least from book 4 forward. Can be a standalone, but I'm just thinking you'll want more background.
Lovemaking outside of marriage - heat level - bedroom door wide opened. The H was fantastic, he cared for the h and when he discovered some of her secrets, he kept them to himself.
One point in the story I thought here we go, becoming a cookie cutter. Then it dawned on me, this author doesn't do cookie cutter, so I'm always delighted. This had to do with a relation of the h and what she tried to pull with H.
No cheating with our MC, no cliffhanger, HEA, romantic, one crude word used, and plenty of steam. I can't improve on the blurb, just giving you extra tidbits to decide whether to purchase.
I received ARC and all opinions are my own and freely given. (ljb)
Very unrealistically, after Roman found out that Ellis was a woman who disguises men's clothes so that she could remain an independent secretary, he decided to help her. After a while, they could not ignore the feeling that brought them closer together and so they became lovers. On the other hand, Ellis was overcome with other emotions such as anger and jealousy towards her parents and her new found siblings. She was angry that after all these years of being treated badly by the Duchess of Henlow who constantly reminded her that she was even less than a servant, she was in fact the illegitimate child of the Duchess and an abysmal Rogue! She envied her siblings not for their wealth but for their legitimacy.. Ellis loved Roman so much so she never wanted to marry Roman because it will ruin his reputation also he needed to marry an heiress to save his... But when Roman proposed, without a moment's of hesitation, Ellis said "YES" !! So where did her worries go? And the mechanics of the story went so well to the end! I dare say that this story was strangely devoid of real excitement. The *** scenes were boringly too much.

Marvelous. We've all be eagerly waiting to read what happened to Ellis after she overheard Min yelling at her mother about the lies that have been told to Ellis her entire life; that she was in fact Min and Sheff's half sister and not the illegitimate daughter of the the Duke, but the Duchess. She flees from all the friends who love her to start a new life. To earn money, she disguises herself as a man and applies to Roman Garrick, the Marquess of Keele ,who is desperate to hire a new secretary. He quickly realizes that she is a woman, but doesn't care because she is an excellent secretary. He lets her keep her secrets and becomes very protective of her, when he perceives that she is in hiding. They fall in love, but how can they have a future together? Never fear, after several plot twists they do get their HEA.
Ms Burke's writing always engages me. Her characters are well developed, and with the exception of the Antagonist are endearing. Is Pandora next?
I was gifted an ARC form the publisher. This is my unbiased, voluntary and unbiased review.
The drama caused by the previous generation’s bad decisions continues as it’s revealed where Ellis has gone. What a tangled web kept coming to my mind as I was reading this story. I felt awful for Ellis when she originally found out about her parentage, & it made it easy to root for her to find some peace & happiness. I’m always a little skeptical about a woman being able to successfully pull off a male disguise in books, but the circumstances in this story are entertaining. I like that the Marquess quickly values Ellis, no matter her secrets. Having been through a lot himself, I found it easy to root for him, too. I couldn’t quite predict how some of the messy or loving connections would wrap-up in the end, but it definitely made me smile. Thanks to the author for allowing me to read an advance copy. Wish I could get an update on whether Harker manages to make any changes. Maybe a little hint in the next book…?
If you love the renaissance era novels, but also love a bunch of spice - here you go, between these covers. You have the societal standards that must be followed, but at the same time certain guidelines that no longer apply to the main characters. Ellis is firmly on the shelf. A companion. A "nobody" - who has been thrown an even bigger speed bump than most could imagine (please see book 5). She isn't one to just roll over and slink into the country to find the closest marriable farmer - no, she is her own woman and she will find her own way.
Roman has had his heart ripped out, but not from true love, from what could have been. Together they form an unlikely friendship / employment and what happens next is absolute fire.
Could be read as as stand alone on a rainy Saturday. But it's even better if you've read the previous books in the Rogue Rules series so you understand the character dynamics and back stories. Well done Ms. Burke. Well done.
After learning that her entire life was a lie, Ellie Dangerfield dresses like a man and applies for a job as a secretary to a widowed marquess to escape the previous life. Roman who is the marquess is trying to build up the fortune that his father lost hires Ellie on the spot. He soon realizes that Ellie is a woman masquerading as a man. When his partners discover that she is a woman, Roman quickly concocts a story that she is a widow to make it a more proper arrangement. There was great chemistry between Ellis and Roman, I loved her wanting independence, and they both had secrets that they were keeping from each other. The storyline was fabulous; there were lots of interesting secondary characters, some from previous books in the series, some steamy scenes and a very satisfying ending to the story. I received this book as an ARC, and these are my opinions.
Parentage, Society, Preposterous Deception, Thrilling Romance Book 6 in the most amazingly series is filled with fun and smoking hot sizzling romance. Ellis and Roman are a delightful couple that started off in a very unusual way. I loved the way Roman discovered that Ellis was not a man. I actually laughed out loud. The entire story was intense with emotions, betrayals, many heartfelt characters along with one vile mother of all mothers. The plot and characters took me on a romantic journey filled with friendships, and much love from almost every charter in the story. I loved the story, the series, and I shed a tear at the special Rogues Rules gift Ellis received towards the end 💋Mature Advisory 🔥🔥+ 💖 Favorite Character. Very hard to decide but for me it was Roman. So wonderful and suppoetive.
After learning that she is the product of a scandal, and not the one she believed herself to be, Ellis Dangerfield is determined to make her own way. She applies for the position of secretary for the Marquess of Keele. The hitch? She must disguise herself as a young man for the job. After losing his unfaithful wife, Roman Garrick determined not to marry, and through all his energy into restoring his family’s fortunes. He is quite pleased with his brilliant and efficient secretary, but he feels there is something odd about him. He soon discovers that his secretary is a woman. They should have parted ways, but they continued to work together, and so much more. Their romance didn’t begin at once, but friendship and respect were there from the beginning. This is a wonderful slow-burn romance between two very smart people, a stubborn marquess and a strong and resilient woman. There are secrets that can tear them apart, but with support from friends and some supportive family members (not Mama), they may well find their happily ever after. I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book.
A plan destined to fail, but the mistake ends up working out. Ellis Dangerfield wants to support herself without having to resort to jobs typically reserved for women. So, she dares: she dresses as a man to get a job as a secretary. At first, the plan works. However, feminine as she is, Ellis isn't exactly a virile man. Lord Roman Garrick, a widower, full of guilt, anger, and remorse, living through his grief, decides to focus his life on work and forget that humanity exists. Upon hiring his secretary, he realizes he has hired a qualified professional... until he discovers that he... was a woman. Intrigued by what could have led his secretary to such a bizarre attitude, he decides to let the charade continue, until it doesn't anymore. And the attraction they feel for each other makes the following decisions much more difficult... and irresistible. 5 stars
Very enjoyable read in this Rogues' Rules series! Love Ellis and her attempts to "be" a man to land a job that will pay her enough to live on, as secretary to Roman, a man desperately in need of an excellent secretary. It doesn't take Roman long to figure out that Ellis is not the man she portrays herself as being, but a woman, and a shapely one at that. Laughs alternate with tears as Roman kisses Ellis when she's wearing a beard and mustache (wonder how that felt?) and Ellis finds out why the Duchess of Henlow detests Ellie, and the Duchess is one the reader loves to hate! Also fun to revisit the previous rogues and their wives as they truly each find happiness with the right woman. Looking forward to Iona's story and hopefully, Pandora's! Although I received a reader's review copy for free, my opinions are my own and freely given.
I absolutely loved Since The Marquess Demands by Darcy Burke! This series continuation sparkles from start to finish. The story features a strong and memorable female lead who is both determined and engaging, making her a joy to follow throughout the novel. The plot is exciting, well-developed, and full of clever twists that kept me turning the pages.
With a heat level of 3, the romance is perfectly balanced—intense without overshadowing the emotional depth of the characters. I also appreciated the return of familiar faces from previous books in the series, which added a layer of warmth and continuity to the story.
Best of all, the book delivers a truly satisfying happy ending that left me with a big smile. Darcy Burke has once again crafted a captivating historical romance that fans of the series will adore.
“Since the Marquess Demands” (Rogue Rules, Book 6) by Darcy Burke Secrets Aloneness and True Family Oh, My, Yes. You really want to read this story. Since I tend to read closed door stories this has a bit more detail in a few scenes than I usually read.. That said, I love this story and this series, so I am trying to share with you how much I loved my time with Ellis & Roman and friends without spoiling the story for you. I want you to discover for yourself the chuckles I enjoyed, the bits of anxiousness, and moments of spontaneous tears. I cannot wait for the next book. This can be read as a stand alone story… BUT, I have read the previous five (5) stories in this series and it was kind-a nice to see the friends again. Happy Reading ! !
Totally Delightful! I enjoyed this super story - from beginning to end. The characters were so well crafted and their story was a real treat. It tells us how Ellis, a beautiful woman, dresses as a man (beard included) to get a job as secretary to Roman, who is trying to rebuild his family's fortune. It was so funny watching her make little slip ups as she tried to act as a man would and she almost succeeded. But, all truths tend to 'out' and of course this one does too and their whole story changes and goes off in another direction. This whole book was so cleverly written, has very funny in parts and also has its passionate and serious moments too. I have just finished reading an early copy and am happy to leave my voluntary review.
Even a Lady’s companion can fall from grace. She wasn’t pushed, no, she ran. And what’s a highly educated woman to do in a world with no opportunities for those of her ilk? Dress up as a man, impress and hope to remain undiscovered.
Once a proud rogue before his father’s title and debts smothered him. Then a faithful loving husband to a woman who barred him in favour of another. Now a bitter widower, immersed in publishing and adopted as a son by his in-laws.
Ellis & Roman, they’ve both been dealt some tough blows... is it any wonder they hang on to their secrets? How I loved to see his inner knight resurge as soon as he figures out his secretary is a woman. This man is protective, supportive and true – and a little pushy, but nothing she can’t handle. Of course, his other “knight” also resurges living and working in close quarters – old rogues die hard – and she hesitates a beat, but not so innocent Ellis has desires of her own... why not indulge if he’s offering. But sadly their delectable fling has a deadline... or does it? When their secrets converge, will truth tear them apart? Or will mommy dearest?
I loved the ‘no promises, no regrets’ vibe of their secret affair. The sneaking around, the fake-man-kisses, the teasing and the naughty quips. They’re so lost in pleasure, they never saw Cupid coming! They’re both so deserving of love, and it was just wonderful to see them find it in each other – mind, body & soul. I loved the whole subplot with Roman’s in-laws – such loving and supportive people; a true found family – and how their publishing house constantly plays second fiddle to the main plot. The love of books plays a major part in this tale, and brings a beautiful lightness to it. And lonely Ellis has her own family, even if it takes her an entire book to admit it, and they do come through for her in the end in the most brilliant way – especially Sheff.
This was an absolutely marvellous read, the perfect blend of happy & sad, and it gave me all the feels! Could not – and did not – put it down!
Another great book by a great author, I have enjoyed this series. This book is about Roman who is a widow, and Ellis. Ellis was Mini (from a previous book) companion. Because of something Ellis found out she left Mini’s family’s house and wanted to go on her own. She decides to become a secretary to a Marquess (Roman). To do this she pretends to be a man. Some of the stuff that happens when she is pretending to be a man is pretty funny. There is a fake beard, tight pants, people finding out etc. I really like Roman because he was calm, caring and understanding when he finds out she is a woman. I loved seeing some characters from previous stories, and I love Roman’s extended family and Ellis’ new found family. I received an ARC of this book, and I am leaving my honest opinion
Look, Ellis is still reeling from the revelations of her true parentage, so she’s hiding from her friends and family. She takes up a position as the Marquess of Keele’s secretary, but she’s disguised as a man to get the job. Roman catches on pretty quick though, but lets her keep the job because she’s just so darn competent. And of course, the attraction between these two starts to simmer and they eventually start an affair. Except Ellis is keeping secrets and just generally in hiding, so definitely not a suitable long term partner for Roman, or so she thinks. Loved seeing how all the characters are entangled in each other’s backstories.
Ellis was determined to make her way in life, even if it meant dressing as a man and working for Roman, Marquess of Keele. It wasn’t long before Roman realised why he was attracted to Ellis, as she was to him. However, Ellis was aware that being illegitimate would make a difference to Roman’s standing in society. Ellis had an horrendous mother and now she was about to visit her father and she worried how that would turn out. Ellis is lucky that she has very good friends and half siblings. I did like the characters of Roman and Ellis, both had a traumatic background, albeit in entirely different ways. I did like the way that Roman was protective of Ellis. It does have a happy ending and a comeuppance for the villains in the story. I received a copy and have voluntarily reviewed it. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
This is such a great series, and a wonderful story of Roman and Ellis’ romance! Roman Garrick is the Marquess of Keele, a widower , who was betrayed in his marriage. He hires Ellis, believing him to be a man, as his secretary. Ellis has secrets of her own. She poses as a man to get this job, which she needs very badly after fleeing her home. She is illegitimate and like Roman, has been badly betrayed. Neither feel able to open their hearts to another Lots of twists, turns, and obstacles getting these two toward their HEA!
