Really 3.75 stars. A good sweet story of a time gone by — but really Ethan Allen was about the only thing that put it in a specific time. An enjoyable read, with some vivid scenes and strong characters.
“Bless you, everyone in Vermont is a farmer,” he answered. “That is how we all live in a new state, for Vermont is still new and has most of her great affairs before her. And no person has ever come to love here who does not love the land.”
The book reminds me a bit of “Farmer Boy” with a Vermont flair. Anyone wanting their children to know what kind of people settled Vermont and the lives they led will be delighted to read the book. It’s not heavy, it’s filled with warm and cheerful circumstances, and yet it shows the challenges of farming in the 1700’s, just after the American War for Independence. It also covers some basic Vermont history which is useful for homeschoolers as well.
This book is more than a “sweet story of bygone times” and it certainly has many historical references to tell you what time period you’re in other than the existence of Ethan Allen. But then again it might take a Vermonter to spot them. One thing I loved was the portrayal of how Vermonters took care of one another; which I know from readings in other books to be true.
If you’re a Vermonter - this is one to get your hands on and read to your elementary kids ☺️
