The Japanese use two styles of writing at the same kanji—Chinese characters, which are ideograms, and kana—which are purely phonetic characters. A very basic introduction to Japanese calligraphy. This book has the same information as many others (history, tools, techniques), and while the basics of the tools and kana are covered well enough, kanji is only briefly touched upon, katakana is only mentioned, and the focus is on hiragana. While the examples are beautifully done and writing of hiragana is well-explained, I feel the author could have gone to more depths with kanji, and some of the examples could have been better explained.

I have learned a great deal about the art of Japanese calligraphy from this slender & beautiful book. I found it interesting and useful to read while learning to read and write the hirigana in my beginning Japanese studies. I am not a calligrapher, but I enjoyed it and learned about the art form.
