A splendid sequel to ENHANCED! Loved this tale of genetics and identity, where the search for family intertwines with high-stakes action. This series is so wonderful. I'm honored to have read an advanced copy of this book and can't stop telling other people about it, especially all the TCK (third culture kids). It captures life across cultures so well. The fact that it does so in an entertaining and fantastical world makes it even better. Five Stars!

Oh. My. Word. This sequel to Enhanced is absolutely stunning. The character development, plot twists, and, well, literally every part of this book had me squealing and on the edge of my seat.
I’ll admit, when I was first working my way through Enclave’s books, I was hesitant to read this series because it’s not something I typically read. But I am oh so glad that I did because about a chapter into the first book I was completely hooked. And then… something crazy happened… the second book was 10000% better. I’m a firm believer in “The first book is always the best” but Candace proved me wrong. And if she can destroy my very firm conclusion on the quality of each book in a series, I can’t wait to see what she’s going to do to us with book three.
Note: I received a ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review:))

《"Maybe I am the Hybrid."》

◇urban: outcast, seeker, artist

◇review:
Overall a fun, exciting YA sci-fi novel, Hybrid did lack a certain spark that made Enhanced so incredible. Still, I enjoyed it more the further I got in it, so four stars for a fantastic climax. I did figure out the (main?) plot twist in book 1, but maybe that's just me. Candace is an amazing person, and I do like reading her work!

◇content:
Mild romance (fake dating).
Violence (non graphic).
Kidnapping and human experimentation.

The search for The Hybrid just intensified....

Wow, and I thought Enhanced was a wild thrill-a-minute ride...Well, Candace Kade has topped it with Hybrid, the second book in her The Hybrid series. Even more intense, this book spans the globe and takes the heroine to new heights – and lows. Old and new enemies converge on Urban every time she seems to be getting close to some answers. And possible betrayal leaves our heroine – not to mention readers – wondering if there is anyone she can trust.

While sci-fi and dystopian are genres that I haven't really read a lot of, it is stories like Hybrid and authors like Candace Kade who keep me coming back and trying new things. The vividness of The Hybrid series is undeniable. You can totally see the story unfolding in your mind's eye and you quickly become invested in Urban's life. At the end of each book it is so hard to say goodbye to the characters but at least with these first two books readers know that there will at least be one more.

Candace Kade's fiction maybe aimed at a YA audience but it is just too good to be limited to only one age group – hence the reason this adult reader is such a fan. I sincerely enjoyed every page of Hybrid and I am on tenterhooks as to what will happen next in the world of The Hybrid...

(I received a copy of this book from the author/publisher. All opinions are entirely my own.)

Pulse-pounding and lushly described with a resilient and compelling protagonist, Hybrid gives us some answers yet leaves plenty of loose ends dangling in the promise of an action-packed series conclusion.

So excited for book three!

HYBRID takes all the bracing thrill of book 1 and kicks it up about fifteen notches! Through life-threatening photo shoots, close calls with giant scorpions, more illegal motorcycle races, and mobs (Ah! Mobs.) Kade weaves a truly action-packed plot with a complex emotional experience and healthy dose of heartache and triumph in turn. Plus a character redemption that absolutely broke my cool. It really is more of an exciting ride than a read, and I loved how themes of family and identity pervaded the temple heists, globe trotting, and high-tech sleuthing. Dr. Yukio may also be a new favorite character, and I really hope we get to see more of him in the next book!

I'm enjoying this series so much! The first book, "Enhanced" was so exciting I could barely put it down, and "Hybrid" did the same. I have to be so careful about spoilers, though, so this may be a short review.

In Enhanced, we learned that this is a world where genetic enhancements are not only possible, but common. The problem is that people can only receive these enhancements while in the womb, so if a family can't afford the expensive procedure, the person must grow up as a "natural" and there is conflict between enhanced and naturals, some of whom see themselves as superior. Additionally, parents choose enhancements for their children, so if the child grows up to want other things out of life, too bad, they must continue on the path chosen for them before birth.

Some people are trying to manipulate human DNA so that it can accept enhancements after birth, thus creating a "hybrid" human. But this would shake up the social classes so much that some people with power and money because of their enhancements don't want it to happen and are willing to kill the first hybrid human in order to stop it. This is where Urban finds herself in book 2. Because of an incident during the Games in book 1, she's been labeled as the hybrid, and yet a friend did some tests and told her that she's not. So now, not only does she have to pretend to be enhanced, she also must watch her back because of multiple radical groups who want to kill or use her.

Again, no spoilers, but the tension throughout this book was perfection as Urban deals with the conflict not only in the world but in herself. For so long, she thought that being enhanced or having the ability to become so would make her feel like she belongs, but now she feels like the belief that she's the hybrid is just making her feel more "other" than ever, even with her adopted family.

I wasn't expecting family to be quite so big of a theme, but I'm glad that it was. It provided some personal conflict amongst all the big, world-changing conflict. Mysteries were solved, more mysteries discovered, and I so, so, so appreciated that some healing occurred, even in an unexpected place.

Like I said in my reading updates, I also love Urban's relationship with Everest. It's so sweet and respectful and yet still great romantic tension going on. I especially appreciate that, unlike in so much YA these days, Urban has guys who are friends and yet there's no love triangle and Everest doesn't feel threatened by any of the guy friends because *gasp* Urban knows who she loves and why so it isn't an issue. And she's also allowed to be a compelling female character without needing every male in existence to drool over her. *extra gasp*! This was so refreshing, I can't even. :)

As for the world-changing conflict, I enjoyed that as well. I wasn't quite sure what to expect or where things would go after the explosive ending of the first book, but I really liked where things went and how it escalated. And the big twists near the end had me gasping!

Like I said at the start, I'm just enjoying this series so much! It's intriguing and fun and I appreciate so much that it's also deep and thoughtful about important topics like family fighting for each other despite differences. Here's looking forward to book 3!

Content Advisory:

Language:
None.

Sexual/Romance:
The attraction between Urban and Everest continues in a chaste manner. Several times, Urban remembers a kiss that they shared and the feeling of him holding her and a couple times he leans close like he's about to kiss her. They do eventually share a kiss, which is described briefly but more in emotional terms than physical.

Violence:
The threat to Urban's life continues and she is in mortal peril multiple times. Someone gets injured by a lion and there are mentions of bloody wounds and blood on the ground. Multiple people get hit by various electric stun weapons. Pain is described in some instances, and in others, the person's body jerking on the ground is described.

Urban sees video of someone spasming after being touched by a person who was enhanced tree frog poison in their skin.

A mob scene features people getting stunned with electricity and gassed with something that impacts them like tear gas.

Heads up to those with an insect phobia that a scene during the official Games about halfway through the book features a giant, genetically modified scorpion. It is described and it attempts to attack multiple players with it's giant stinger.

Punches sometimes get thrown, martial arts moves are executed, and people get knocked unconscious. Sometimes pain is described.

Drug/Alcohol
As in the previous book, it's mentioned that Enhanced people can change a part of their biology so that they can drink tons of alcohol without being impacted by it as quickly as Naturals. It's something that they seem to be able to turn on and off and many of Urban's extended family members turn it off so that they get drunk at a Chinese New Year celebration. Slurred speech, trouble coordinating, and stupid behavior is depicted. Urban herself never drinks because she would get drunk too fast and therefore reveal herself as a Natural.

Mention of someone taking prescription drugs that treat a certain deadly lung disease that only Enhanced people can get.

Mention of a gas that knocks people out.

A couple mentions of blood samples being taken. (Not described to any extreme, though a prick of pain is sometimes mentioned)

It is described as someone is forced to undergo an experimental medical treatment via a micro needle patch, which is affixed to the person's arm and covered with an electronic device that won't let them take it off without getting burned in punishment. Multiple brief descriptions of the burn this device causes.

Spiritual:
None so far. The book is written by a Christian from a Christian perspective, but the series thus far hasn't dealt with any faith topics or even mentioned God. Some Enclave books are like that while some don't deal with faith until the final book, so I'll be sure to make note when the third book comes out if any spiritual themes come through there.

its been a few days since i read this, and i thought that would help me process it in order to write a better review, but it seems like i just forgot most of what happened. so uhh,, anyway, we'll go off what i do remember.

i did not like the games in this book. it felt forced and unnecessary. honestly, a lot of the world building felt that way. i think i would have enjoyed this book better if the plot was mostly focused on the thing--instead of like 100 (the games, her school, kol things, the hybrid, etc.). even though some of them connected, it just felt like way too much.

the plot twist at the end... im not sure if i liked it or not. it made sense, but... ehh...

what i did really like, though, was finally getting more info about lucas! i dont hate him anymore. and towards the end, too, i started liking urban. she stopped being annoying. i could hardly stand her in the first book with sosh this and sosh that and woe is me im not enhanced. but that was literally like the last two chapters.

and that brings me to the next topic... the actual enhancements. honestly, i hate them. it does make for an interesting story, which is why i even read these books, but i wish the author didn't make it seem like you just HAD to be enhanced. instead of "equality between enhanced and naturals" it was more "let naturals get enhanced too". i thought that maybe everest would be more on the "its okay to be natural" side, but that was not the case...

segway into the romance... that i couldn't care less about. they started fake dating, for whatever reason. usually i would be behind that but it felt ridiculous here...

her art teacher was probably my favorite character. i would have LOVED to get more info about her art class. her final project at the end was also ridiculous. and does it even count, if she didn't make it? thats basically cheating. who cares if she almost died the chapter before... LOL im kidding. mostly.

i was under the impression that this was a duology but i guess not? anyway, since i was liking the end, maybe ill like the next book. idk.

I definitely enjoyed this one more than the first book. I love Kade's ability to describe the world vividly without making me feel like I'm slogging through paragraphs of information.

Sidenote: I'm not really a fan of all the alcohol consumption, even though the main character doesn't imbibe. With this being YA, I'm a bit wary of how the alcohol issue might come across to younger readers.

The romance in this (and Enhanced) feels forced and superficial to me, and I was relieved when it dropped out of focus for the last third of the book. Every time I came across a section of romance content, I started it, only to become almost immediately uncomfortable/disenchanted and then end up skimming or skipping until I made it back to the main story. For the record, I find the vast majority of romance content intensely uncomfortable/unpalatable to read, and this was not an exception. I am extremely particular in this regard, so I have no doubt others will have vastly differing opinions on this front.

All that being said, I loved the way this story kept moving. Even during times when characters weren't in physical motion, the story was still taking forward strides, and I never felt stuck. The question of who the Hybrid was stayed with me until the reveal, and I enjoyed the process of discovering the truth surrounding that particular mystery. Competitions and tests are something I really enjoy reading too, and Hybrid had multiple instances of that, which was a fun plus for me.

I loved this heart-pounding sci-fi thrill ride! It was exciting, fast-paced, and impossible to put down.

It’s been a while since I read the first book, so I was worried it might take a little bit to get back into this world. I shouldn’t have worried. I was able to dive right back in with no problem.

The worldbuilding is stunning! Intricate and detailed, yet never overwhelming. Futuristic yet not out of the realm of possibility. The tech and gadgets were really interesting! Just as I thought with the first book, this is one of the most impressive and unique stories I’ve had the pleasure of reading.

The second half of the book takes Urban to the Western Federation. It was really interesting to see how it differed from the Asian Federation.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys exciting, clean young adult science fiction. Be sure to start with book one, though. This is not a standalone. I can't wait for the next book!

This action packed sequel launches off right where Enhanced ended! I really appreciated some of the recaps since it’s been a while since I read the first book. The world building in this series is my favorite part. The culture is so different from what I usually read and the tech is imaginative and immersive!

While the plot was captivating and fast paced, I still found myself not super invested in Urban herself. She was pretty much the same as in book one and it felt like things were just happening to her. I’m still very much looking forward to her character arc in book three and that ending is promising!

What I’m most invested in is the political aspect of the series and I’m really curious about how it’s going to play out. I can’t say I was shocked by any plot twists, but some were still surprising and well written. I’m highly anticipating book three and seeing how everything plays out! I loved the family themes as well as everything with Everest!

Hybrid is the exciting sequel to the Hybrid Trilogy and I can't wait to read book three!

At the start of this book Lee Urban is navigating tense politics of the world, her secret natural ability, her new status as KOL and her relationships with her ex and her family, all while on a new mission to find the Hybrid and her birth parents.

Hard to put down, Candace creates a fast-paced story that makes you wanna read the next installment! She excels at world building and descriptors and you feel as though you are there in the world with Lee. Would love to see this series as a movie some day!

*Thanks @enclavepublishing for my earc!

Hybrid follows Urban and her journey from book one so I don’t want to spoil the plot, but this was a great sequel to “Enhanced”. Candace created such a unique world and I think anyone who enjoys Dystopian fiction will enjoy this series! There was a great twist that I wasn’t expecting and the set up for book two left me really wanting more! I really enjoyed the character development in this one too.

Swipe to see the picture I used from the cover reveal from when my little girl was tiny. I had to recreate it now thag she’s bigger!

Read this if:
-You enjoy Chinese culture.
-You like Dystopian fiction.
-You ever wondered what it would be like to have special abilities.

My rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫 (4.5/5 stars)

HYBRID is book 2 in The Hybrid Series. Be sure to read ENHANCED (book 1) before starting its sequel.

HYBRID starts off about 2 weeks after the ending of ENHANCED. Once again, I enjoyed the futuristic world Kade has created. HYBRID is, for perhaps the first half of the book, set in the Asian Federation (same place as ENHANCED). The author once again made me hungry with all the Chinese food referenced. (And once again I was googling all the unfamiliar dishes.)

Somewhere in the middle of the story, main character Lee Urban (along with a few others) makes her way over to the Western Federation. While there, Urban hopes to get some answers about her birth family as well as search for information about the hybrid.

We know the hybrid is key. Will Urban and her friends discover the truth about the hybrid?

🤐🤐🤐

You’ll want to read HYBRID and find out what happens! *squees* It’s so good! I can’t wait for book 3!

I would recommend this story to older teen and adult readers who enjoy a fun & clean YA scifi adventure.

Because HYBRID is published as Christian fiction, I will note that there is (so far) no overt faith represented in this series (some Christian themes are in there, but they’re really subtle). I personally enjoyed it as a well-written, creative, Christian-made story.

I received an ebook ARC of HYBRID from the publisher/author. All opinions expressed in this review are my honest thoughts about this book.

If your origin story was a bit mysterious to begin with and then your reference point gets obliterated, you may find yourself in a position to either sink or swim. But what if you had to not only lean into your greatest fear, but dive head first to survive?

Lee Urban in Candace Kade’s 2nd book of The Hybrid Series: HYBRID is learning how to dive deep into an ocean of unanswered questions that could very well take her own life and those she loves.

Once again tapping into the very plausible landscape of a futuristic society immersed in an incredibly controversial genetic science culture, Kade continues this thrilling ride that will shake you to your core.

This book is highly enjoyable and an excellent format to ask yourself the deeper questions of life and how we should live now for a better outcome for future generations.

HYBRID launches March 5th! Go grab yourself a copy of both books in the series today!!! https://www.bestofbooksok.com/preorde...

As in Enhanced, the worldbuilding is great. I loved all of the small details Kade woven throughout the narrative that add another level of depth to the setting. It was also fun exploring the Western Federation--some of the Texas things made me laugh. =)

The plot was well balanced, juggling multiple subplots all while keeping the pacing and tension. Be warned, the last quarter of the book is full of twists and turns that will keep you eagerly reading. There was a certain plot twist that I would have liked to have grounded/foreshadowed a little more, but I'm anticipating there being more explanation behind it in the third book.

While many YA books often brush off family, I loved how Hybrid focused on family and its importance. Urban's arc was done very well in relation to the theme.

While second books in a trilogy sometimes suffer from "filler syndrome," Hybrid certainly does not and will leave readers eager for the conclusion to the series.

Cautions: moderate romance; one kiss; non-graphic moderate violence

When I reviewed Enhanced, I gave two separate ratings--one for quality and one for my own personal enjoyment. This one has instead just ended up averaged out, since it was harder with this book to separate my opinions of the book from its actual quality (due, I think, to going into it with low expectations after Enhanced). So here's a list of my likes and dislikes about Hybrid, with the understanding that most of the dislikes are not faults of the book but elements that are not to my personal taste.

Dislikes
- It's still very steeped in YA tropes, especially in the way it handles character relationships (both familial and romantic).
- The character relationships are probably my biggest gripe, honestly. The main romantic plotline feels like it has a really shaky foundation, and the lack of communication doesn't help; and ditto with all of Urban's familial relationships taking a hit and little effort being put into resolving them.
- Urban comes across as a very self-centered protagonist; even if/when the book's events aren't entirely meant to center around her, the way they're portrayed from her POV makes them come across that way.
- This series is not self-examining in the department of sci-fi tech. Not one character questions the wisdom of what has become "normal" in terms of the world's technology. That's totally fine, and largely understandable, but I personally prefer when unsettling technological advances are critiqued within a book vs. embraced as totally normal, and this series just doesn't take that approach.
- Urban's family (including broader extended family) consistently gets drunk around the holidays. Urban does express distaste for this, but it still felt like it was a normalized part of their behavior and it came up multiple times in the early chapters of the book, which felt a bit excessive to me.
- The portrayal of the Western Federation felt very stereotypical. Maybe that's just personal blindness to how my own culture really is perceived by someone who's been on the outside, but it felt like it was very lacking in nuance--or diversity, which is a little ironic to me.

Likes
- The relationships are finally beginning to be handled in more mature ways by the end of the book, which gives me greater hope for the series finale.
- The plot did surprise, on a couple of occasions.
- One or two scenes were described with really strong cyberpunk aesthetics.
- This series does an effective job, overall, of exploring what it would be like to live in a world where people with superpowers are the norm, and what sort of connotations that might have for relationships between superpowered vs. ordinary people within a common culture.
- Most of the side characters Urban works with are cool, and they're all very distinctive contributors to the story.

Candace Kade's latest book, 'Hybrid', is a captivating continuation of the first book in the series. It follows the journey of Lee Urban, a young woman on a quest to find her birth parents and discover her true purpose in the world. As a Christian reader, I found many relatable themes in this book - the search for meaning and purpose, and the importance of having Jesus in our lives.

The main character, Lee Urban, is a relatable and likeable character. Her struggles and doubts about her identity and purpose are something that many of us can understand. As Christians, we know that without Jesus, we are lost and searching for meaning. Lee's journey mirrors this, as she tries to find her place in the world without knowing who she truly is.

Kade does a great job of weaving this theme into the story, making it relatable to readers of all ages. However, as much as I enjoyed Lee's adventures, there were some elements in the book that I found concerning. As a young adult book, I feel that it should have been geared more towards adults, especially considering the mature content that was included.

There were some uncomfortable situations in the book, such as partying, drinking, and romantic scenes that were not necessary for the story. As a Christian, I believe that young adults do not need to be exposed to these things, especially in Christian books. It sends the wrong message and can be misleading for readers.

Moreover, I was a little disappointed that Jesus was not clearly portrayed as the central Savior in the book. Lee Urban seemed to be the savior of humankind, and this could potentially send the wrong message to young readers. As Christians, we know that Jesus is the only Savior, and this should have been more readily portrayed in the book.

Despite these concerns, I did enjoy the book overall. Kade's writing style is engaging and kept me hooked until the very end. Her descriptions and vivid imagery brought the story to life, making it easy to visualize the events as they unfolded. I would definitely recommend this book, with a word of caution for young adults.

In conclusion, 'Hybrid' by Candace Kade is a well-written and enjoyable read. It continues the saga of Lee Urban's journey to find her birth parents and discover her true purpose. While I appreciated the themes of finding meaning and purpose in life, I feel that the book could have been more appropriate for young adult readers. Nevertheless, I would still recommend it, with a bit of caution, to adults looking for an entertaining read.

I received a complimentary copy from the author through Celebrate Lit, for my honest opinion.

Candace doesn't hold back in this electrifying continuation to book 1! Featuring super-sized beasts, illegal underwater experiments, terrifying games, and a dizzying web of twists and turns, Hybrid takes you on a wild adventure that you aren't soon to forget.

The book starts out with a bang, pulling us into the colorful, exciting cultural world of New Beijing as Urban spends Lunar New Year with her family. The abundance of concrete details is one of my favorite parts of this series--Candace has woven such a colorful, vibrant world into this exhilarating tale, and it really comes to life because of her attention to detail!

I loved how the family dynamics were developed in book two. I adored the protective, older sister vibes from Lillian. And it made my heart happy to see Lucas and Urban finally resolve the tension between them (also, his whole personality cracks me up). As the oldest of five siblings, it always warms me to see healthy family dynamics in fiction.

Just like in book one, as a TCK, I could deeply relate to Urban's struggles of not belonging in Enhanced society and not knowing what her identity was. Candace has brought a fresh, creative spin on this common longing for belonging and identity, one I know many TCKs will find solace in.

Everest and Urban's relationship really improved in this second book. I enjoyed watching them struggle and learn and grow together through their adventures--all the time becoming closer to each other and realizing what's really important. Everest's protective nature melted my heart.

There were so many mind-boggling twists and turns that I could hardly keep up--or put the book down! You won't be able to resist the pace of this thrilling, adrenaline-filled ride. And I found the political and cultural details sprinkled throughout quite fascinating--especially in the way they reflect modern happenings. Because after all, fiction is never truly fictitious, only a reflection of our own world.

Candace has outdone herself again in this intense sequel to Enhanced--I can't wait to read the next installment of Urban's story!

I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
