Review of advance copy received from Edelweiss+

The second omnibus edition about the Sanson family of executioners of Paris covers the decade before the French Revolution, original volumes 4-6. It concentrates mostly on the second Sanson daughter Marie-Joseph, the executioner of Versailles, who dresses as a man and ignores all polite conventions. Where Charles-Henri, the eldest son, is becoming more compassionate as he grows older, dreaming of more humane method of execution, Marie-Joseph becomes more radicalised. But she’s still protecting the king and queen while dreaming of equality between men and women, no matter the cost.

This was a more straightforward story than the first omnibus, which jumped between past and present. It proceeded fast from event to event, skipping years. Some historical events featured, showing the radicalisation of the French people. The omnibus ends with an execution of a young man that the citizens of Paris consider innocent, which will ignite the revolution. Art was excellent, like in the first volume, with a couple of beautiful full colour plates.

I received a free copy from Edelweiss in exchange for an honest review.
