Fran Donoghue has just killed her neighbour. Don’t worry, you’ll agree, he deserved it.

Detective Gareth Donoghue has a terrible feeling about his missing neighbour.

By the time this is over, that will be the least of his worries…

A dark, sharp and hilarious novel about love, marriage, and murder, with an ending you won’t see coming… Gareth certainly didn’t. Perfect for fans of How to Kill Your Family, Everyone in My Family Has Killed Someone and Killing Eve.

Gareth is a detective. Fran is his wife. They have a cat named Mep (who is on the brink of death 100% of the time but still somehow carries the plot).

Did I mention Fran is a secret serial killer? Their weird neighbor “mysteriously disappears"... except actually, Fran shanked him in the eye.

Meanwhile, Gareth is accidentally investigating his own wife’s murder case.

This book is batshit in the best way. I laughed. I gasped. I said “NO FRAN NO” out loud. it’s a murder mystery where the murderer is your narrator and somehow you still root for her. Like yeah she stabbed a man but also…he might’ve deserved it?? (He def deserved it).

3.5 stars

The STORY is iconic. Mep is top tier. The execution was lacking a bit. Still an entertaining read and I flew though it.

Thank you to NetGalley and Storm publishing for the ARC in exchange for my honest review.

My Wife, the Serial Killer written by H.J. Garbett was very interesting. The first half of this book was very slow and took me forever to get through, but by the halfway mark it started picking up pace and I was flying through the pages. I first requested this book because of that stunning cover, I mean how could you not love it? It's pick and the detail is stunning as ever. But when I read the synopsis, I was sold right away. If you loved the Mindfuck series, you are going to love this one as well, it has the same exact concept. I absolute loved the Mindfuck series, and I did enjoy My Wife, the Serial Killer, but I had to lower my rating due to the pacing issues and how long it took me to get into this book and the ending gave me no answers except for one character, which bummed me out a bit. Don't expect much from this review because I don't want to give away the plot, so you are going to need to read this book to get the gory experience of a killer. If you love unhinged women, you are going to want this book in your hands asap, so please do me a favor and mark your calendars for June 17th, 2025 for the publication of My Wife, the Serial Killer written by H.J. Garbett and make sure it's on your tbr list if you are looking for something creepy. I can't recommend this book enough, like I said before, if you loved the Mindfuck series, and you are a fan of unhinged women like myself, you won't want to miss out on this novel.

THANK YOU TO NETGALLEY AND STORM PUBLISHING FOR AN ARC OF THIS BOOK IN EXCHANGE FOR AN HONEST REVIEW!!!!!!

"💯A bad plan is better than no plan at all💯".

"👿🍀Most murderers are stupid, but there had to be a few clever ones who got away with it👿🍀".

"😂⏳You can't exactly ask Siri where's the best place to hide a dead body😂⏳".

Fran Donoghue reminded me of Lana Myers. They are both badass women and so damn unhinged💅💟. Fran was dry, funny, and full of dark humor, I loved Fran because my love language is dark humor. Fran killed her neighbor, Gordon O'Neill who was supposed to protect children that were in child protection services, but let's just say he's a scumbag. Fran claimed it was self defense, she wants it to be known that she isn't a serial killer, and she will remind you throughout the book that she isn't a psychopath. Fran is a social worker in child protection, but she mostly works with foster kids because she wants them to be in a loving home. Fran doesn't like to talk about her childhood, but if you read the book you will get the full backstory, but here's just a little information, Fran was at St. Nicholas which is a Children's Home, but one day a fire started from a broken heater, and Fran wasn't protected at all, in fact her life was ruined. Gareth Donoghue is Fran's husband and together they have a dramatic cat named Mep that's on his death bed, but he will definitely capture your attention. Gareth loved that Fran was so spontaneous, he texts like a grandma- he turns everything into an acronym. Gareth is also the detective that is investigating the "disappearance" of Gordon O'Neill, but little does he know his wife Fran killed him, talk about a marriage that's about to crumble to rubble. Gareth is a people pleaser when it comes to his colleagues at work, but damn sometimes I just wanted to knock some common sense into him because at times he was just so oblivious to the things happening around him. Anywho, that will be the end of my review, because I don't want to spoil the plot, so please go get your hands on this book like right now.

There is nothing more that I love than an unhinged female main character in a novel! This book is witty, funny, shocking, clever and unforgettable! It is full of mystery and adventure. This is the author’s debut novel and I will say that she absolutely nailed it! It is a medium paced read that has lovable characters in it! I really loved the female main character, Fran. The way that she thinks in this book is downright hilarious, in a dark way of course. I really started liking her husband Gareth too, especially towards the end of the book. I really enjoyed the dual points of views and the extra point of view at the ending! The flaws of the female main character is a main focus of the story. This book flows well, is extremely captivating and comes with a killer female character! It also comes with a shocking twist at the end!

Even though this has a lot of humor in it, it still is very dark and tense. Fran ends up murdering someone right at the very beginning of the book. Gareth is a detective and becomes curious of the neighbor’s sudden disappearance. Gareth is deep in his work and really doesn’t pay attention in the world in which he lives in. This book becomes a mystery really quickly and throughout the entire book. Overall, I give this a solid 5 out of 5 stars rating!

I think anyone that enjoyed “The Mindf*ck Series” and the book “How to Kill Your Family” would love reading this book. Content warnings include death and murder.

Thank you to NetGalley, author H. J. Garbett and Storm Publishing for this digital advanced reader’s copy of this book in exchange for my honest review. All thoughts and opinions expressed are my own.

• The blurb for this book had me so excited. You know I love me an unhinged woman. However, I found myself very underwhelmed by the execution of it. Let’s put it this way, My Wife the Serial Killer didn’t even need to happen if Gareth had not been so adamant about investigating his neighbor’s death. He could’ve minded his own damn business & none of this had to go down. The End. Fin.

• The book started out strong. The plot was intriguing. The pacing was fast. I was into it! Then, it all went downhill for me. I found the pacing started to slow, nothing interesting was going on, & it started to drag. I wasn’t looking forward to picking up the book anymore like I was at the beginning. It felt more like a chore to read it & I hate when a book does that to me.

• If Gareth has no haters, then I am dead. Within the first few chapters, I had a feeling I wasn’t going to like him. He seemed like an insecure, whiny, immature kiss ass. I couldn’t care less about what happened to him. And what he did to Fran?! There was no coming back from that for me. I don’t know how she even forgave him. Sure, he pulled through for Fran in the end. Homeboy literally waited until the last minute. & though I had a soft spot for Fran, even she got on my nerves! You know how hard it is to root for characters you really don’t care about? My favorite character was the 17 year old, dying cat, Mep. Not sure what that says about me.

• While My Wife the Serial Killer did have humor, heart, & good writing, it just wasn’t for me. But I could see it working for a lot of other people!

♡ this was such an unhinged story & i LOVED it ♡

thank you to H.J Garbett & Storm Publishing for an advanced reader copy of this book!

5 ⭐️

this book had the perfect mix of dark humor, chaos & secrets. i was hooked from page one and literally could not stop reading. this book was impossible to put down & has easily become one of my favorites. Garbett is an excellent writer! i have no complaints!

📖 plot & pace: the book starts off so fast with the FMC committing a murder. her husband (a detective) dives into a case.. the same his wife played a part in. it spirals from there in the most wild, witty & unpredictable way. the pacing is fast with short (but suspenseful) chapters that make it so easy to binge in one sitting.

👥 characters: the FMC is absolutely unhinged, definitely dangerous, but somehow still charming. the characters are ALL unforgettable, with sharp dialogue and a ton of personality.

🤩 tropes: morally gray characters, ride or die vibes, secret past

if you love thrillers with morally questionable characters & dark humor, this needs to be on your tbr!!

My Wife, The Serial Killer by H. J. Garbett
A murder comedy with a killer concept that fizzled fast.

Huge thanks to Storm Publishing & NetGalley for the eARC!! 💌

this was criminally underwhelming.
the pitch? immaculate.
a wife who kills. a detective husband investigating. a deranged cat. moral chaos in suburbia.

but somewhere between Fran’s darkly funny monologues and Gareth’s tragic case of chronic oblivion... the story lost its spark.

🎭 Domestic Noir
🥀 Suburban Gothic
🎭 Dual POV
🥀 Dark Comedy
🎭 Moral Ambiguity
🥀 Animal Sidekick (!!)

✂️ sharp setup, blunt delivery.
the first half? quick, snarky, twisted. I was rooting for Fran like she was auditioning for the morally grey hall of fame. the
second half? tone shift whiplash. the humour fades, the pacing crawls, and character arcs? shaky at best.

I get the intention — trauma, secrets, guilt. but the execution felt clumsy, like the plot couldn't pick a lane between satirical thriller and melancholic domestic drama.
also: can we talk about how Gareth had the emotional depth of a damp towel until the very end? 😐

📉 the downfall:
- characters acting out of character for convenience
- an epilogue that felt like a shrug
- emotional beats that didn’t land
- and that one cat who was more emotionally consistent than half the cast (justice for Mep tbh 🐾)

but here’s the thing:
this could have been epic.
I wanted it to be epic.
I prepped for a full on obsession.
instead, I got… ✨mild confusion and unfinished potential✨

would I recommend it?
maybe, if you’re into quirky murderers, weirdly loyal cats, and don't mind a shaky back half.
but if you’re here for a Lana Myers level of psychological slayage — prepare for disappointment.

━━━━━━━━━━━⊱♡⊰━━━━━━━━━━

🖤✨ PRE-READ THOUGHTS ✨🖤

okay. pause.
A murderess baddie wife?
A detective husband in the dark?
Sign me the hell up.

I've barely opened the book and I'm already ✨unwell✨ over the vibes.
Everyone’s saying this gives Mindfuck series energy??
AND they’re comparing Fran to Lana??
I fear I'm going to love her. A little too much.

I’m obsessed with morally grey women who kill men and still somehow make you root for them 😌 Also hoping they don’t betray each other and end up on the same side because lovers-to-reluctant allies-to-lovers again in a morally grey marriage of secrets and blood?? i NEED that to go right 😭

This is about to be dark, twisted, and disturbingly funny. Let’s go.

•This is definitely one of the most addictive thrillers I’ve ever read 🔪. I just couldn’t stop reading—if it weren’t for needing sleep 😴, I would've finished it in one sitting! It was such an enjoyable read, and I’m sure that anyone who loved The Mindfck Series* will enjoy this one too. As someone who loved that series, I could see a softer version of it here—Fran reminded me so much of Lana 🖤.

•I liked Fran from the beginning. I even found myself sympathizing with her and thinking she was right... even before the full truth was revealed 🤫. I loved how much she cared for her husband—her love, her loyalty, and her protectiveness over him were so touching 💕. The part about her not being able to have children broke my heart 💔. Her fear of losing Gareth because of that felt so raw and real.

•As for Gareth, I really felt bad for him 🥺. He was struggling at work—being ignored by Steve and Darren 🙄, basically harassed by Cic and Isla 😒, and constantly buried in work by Vivian. I don’t think he stayed quiet because he was weak; I believe he genuinely thought he could earn respect through kindness 🤍. I stopped being mad at him after what he did at the end. That moment of regret, and what he was willing to do for Fran, showed how deeply he truly loved her 💘.

•Their relationship felt so real—their conversations, their moments together, even the tension between them 🥹. It was believable and emotional.

•And then there’s Angus—quiet, mysterious, and loyal. I loved him from the beginning 🖤. What he did for Fran near the end made me admire him even more.

•Now let me talk about Mit... the grumpy, angry, old cat 🐾. I cried so much when the vet told Gareth to take him home because he wouldn’t make it through the night 😭. That moment hit hard, especially since my aunt’s cat “Mino,” who I loved deeply, passed away the same day 🕊️. It felt personal.

•Oh, and I almost forgot to say how much I hated Cic, Isla, Steve, Vivian, and Darren 😤. I honestly wanted Fran to burn them all 🔥.

•Peryl and her dog were unforgettable too—what a pair 🐕!

•As for the ending—I liked it, but I wanted more! I imagined Fran and Gareth together with four kids (two boys and two girls), two dogs 🐶, and Mit🐱. That would’ve been perfect!

•𝙁𝙞𝙣𝙖𝙡 𝙩𝙝𝙤𝙪𝙜𝙝𝙩𝙨:
This book made me laugh 😂, cry 😢, feel angry 😡, and fall in love with fictional people and pets 🥰. If you love dark humor, messed up characters, and twisty relationships—you need to read this!

First and foremost, this is a debut novel, and I’ve got to give props where they’re due—I genuinely enjoyed it. I’m already excited to see what this author comes up with next.

If there’s one thing I will always fall for, it’s this: the female lead is a killer, the male lead is a detective, and they’re a couple. Absolute peak chaos—and I’m obsessed. Add in their grumpy old cat Mep, and it’s a full-blown recipe for delight.

What drew me to this book initially? That eye-catching cover and a title that practically begs you to pick it up. I was hooked before I even opened it.

Character-wise, Fran and Gareth were total standouts. Mep, of course, gets bonus points for being the surly cat we all secretly want. Angus was a fun addition, and I got a kick out of Beryl and her dog, Tony. I wasn’t overly attached to any of the other characters but that didn’t take away from the experience.

The writing style was witty and engaging, with plenty of dry, sarcastic, and twisted humor that had me laughing out loud.

One of my favorite elements was the dual POV, which lets us see the story unfold from Fran and Gareth’s perspectives—plus a surprise perspective at the end from a character you can’t help but love

Beyond the murder and mystery, the novel also touches on deeper, more personal themes—like Fran and Gareth’s journey through fertility and their hopes of starting a family. It adds a layer of emotional depth that balances out the darker elements nicely. Life goes on, even when someone might be hiding bodies.

So if you’re in the mood for a story that blends murder, mayhem, dark humor, a touch of heart, and a cast of characters both lovable and morally questionable (plus some truly excellent pets), this one might just be your next favorite read.

In the prologue to this debut novel, Fran Donoghue has just killed her grumpy, elderly neighbour in his own kitchen. Now she must get rid of his body and cover up the crime, all before her detective husband gets home from work.

With Gareth assigned to look at the elderly man’s disappearance, it becomes harder and harder for Fran to maintain her innocence. Told form both Fran’s and Gareth’s point of view, this is a fun romp of a humorous and smart cosy mystery. Fran is both hilarious and scary as the slightly unhinged killer who sees nothing wrong with killing those who deserve it and Gareth is so adorably clueless. Later in the book, a more serious note is introduced as we come to understand why Fran kills but returns to it’s former lightness with an unexpected twist at the end.

The idea is interesting, but I had trouble with the execution.

The writing is pretty good, so is the pacing, and the banter was fun, but the characters were weirdly executed.

For some reason, all of the women characters are awful persons with no redeeming qualities.

And the husband was especially difficult to understand, and his arc didn't really made sense to me. The guy completely changes his personality in the span of 50 pages.

It could have been better.

Thank you NetGalley and Storm Publishing for the digital ARC in exchange for my honest opinion.

I love a good female serial killer so when I saw the title I immediately requested the ARC. This was such a fun read too. I loved Fran’s character right off the bat. She had me laughing. It took me a minute to warm up to Gareth. At first I was thinking what does she see in this man??? But by the end I was cheering him on. I will definitely be on the look out for more books by the author.

I wish I could shout this from the rooftops: read this book! It has everything—biting dark humor, unapologetic flawed women, a rough-and-tumble upbringing, twisted family ties, crime, corruption, murder, court drama, ethical dilemmas, a gossipy neighbor, office politics… and the unforgettable Mep the Cat (a true icon).

I laughed. I was concerned. I cried. I was mad. This book dragged me through the full emotional spectrum—and it did all that in just 321 pages! It’s bold, sharp, and brilliantly told from two gripping POVs that keep you hooked and constantly guessing. Just when you think you’ve figured it out… twist!

The only downside? You won’t be able to put it down. Highly recommend!

Thank you Netgalley for the digital ARC. Finished this in two sitting and in less than 8 hours. I was intrigued from the very beginning. A female serial killer reminds me so much of the Mindfuck series. But the ending was predictable after a certain point in the story.

The blurb sounded so promising but the execution and delivery was underwhelming.

However, i don't mind spending half of my day reading this because of the dark humor and the pacing.

3.5, I support woman’s rights and wrongs

I really enjoyed “My wife the serial killer”. On NetGalley (thank y’all for the book) It's labeled as a mystery, but it more dark comedy with a side of romance and found family.

Don't go in expecting a huge plot twist Yk the killer and the reasons why pretty early on . The reveal is more of a drawn-out “how is this going to end" moment that makes you question certain characters. The characters are “redeemable”, (Not to me tho) but I couldn't like the male lead (Gareth) later on. The FMC (Fran) is a total badass, though and I loved her.

I personally disliked the ending, but I understand why the book couldn’t end the way I wanted. Ending Thoughts: a total mixed bag of emotions. If you like morally grey characters and stories that make you think as well as the mindfuck series, give it a shot.

I absolutely LOVED My Wife, the Serial Killer. I did immersive reading this round, and I don’t think I would’ve enjoyed this as much without the audiobook. The narration brought so much life to the story. I went in expecting a dark humor horror vibe, but it surprised me with so much more.

The first half had me laughing out loud, and Fran’s inner monologue was everything. I adored how much she loved her husband Gareth, and their relationship felt genuinely cozy. Also, shoutout to the cat. And when she threatened Gareth’s coworker for stealing his lunch? Iconic. 🥹🥺

Then things got more emotional. We already had Gareth’s POV early on, but in the second half, we really got to sit with him, and I loved it. He absolutely adores his wife, and his anxious, slightly awkward inner world made him so easy to connect with. He’s quirky, sweet, and honestly kind of adorkable. And when the reasons behind Fran’s choices came to light, it wrecked me. The balance between hilarious and heartbreaking was done so well. I wasn’t prepared to be this emotionally invested, but here we are. I loved the ending, and this is definitely one I’ll be rereading. Easily one of my favorite dark humor reads.

📌 What To Expect
• Killer wife
• Detective husband
• Morally gray FMC
• Dual POV
• Marriage of secrets
• Crime cover-up

okay first of all. this book? ate. I finished it in like two sittings because the tension? the drama? I was seated.

My Wife, the Serial Killer is exactly as crazy as the title sounds, and I loved every second of it. It leans into the madness with zero hesitation and hits the perfect balance between dark humor and 'ohmygod she really just did that?' moments. the ENTIRE time, I was like: 'yes girl, commit crimes and be cool about it!'

My queen Fran: she’s SO smart, so quick with the comebacks, always two steps ahead, and just a delight to be in the head of even when she’s doing deeply questionable things.

MEP!! the cat. if anything had happened to him I would've absolutely lost it. like truly, Mep's health was my priority, even with everything else going on.

Gareth’s sudden switch-up was weird though. like he went from 'Fran could never hurt anyone 🥺' to 'she definitely murdered that man and I’m calling the cops.' HELLO? it felt a bit out of nowhere. I get it, the evidence was there, but the shift was jarring. idk maybe his moral compass kicked in late?

I was living for the station drama-every character in that building was terrible and it was so satisfying to watch things spiral the way they did. Gareth finally getting his moment was sooo satisfying. also, I didn’t feel bad for any of Fran’s victims-they had it coming.

the epilogue from Beryl’s pov? chef’s kiss. I loved that old lady so much. 🥰 It was truly a delight, and wrapped things up in such a solid, satisfying way.

if you're into thrillers with a dose of dry humor, this one’s for you.

Married life can be murder… and I was so here for it 🔪💍😂

I genuinely didn’t expect to enjoy this as much as I did, but it completely won me over. It’s dark, it’s funny, and somehow still manages to be heartwarming in the weirdest, most delightful way.

The writing had me giggling more than once, and I loved how the full story unfolded bit by bit—just the right mix of suspense and snark. I was a little unsure about Gareth at first, but both he and Fran ended up being such well-drawn, oddly loveable characters. (P.S - I loved the cat!)

Overall, it was perfect. 👏 Totally satisfying, with just the right twist of dark humour and emotional payoff.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ – Darkly hilarious, unexpectedly tender, and a total page-turner. Highly recommend for anyone who likes their thrillers with a little chaos and a lot of character.

Big thanks to NetGalley and Storm Publishing for the ARC! 🙌

Fran Donoghue loves her husband. She loves her cat, Mep (barely clinging to life like a Victorian orphan). She also loves quietly murdering people who, in her very subjective opinion, really had it coming. Honestly, we stan a woman with hobbies.

My Wife, the Serial Killer kicks off with Fran taking out the neighbor via eyeball stabbing, and honestly? You will probably agree with her decision faster than you’re comfortable admitting. The real kicker is that Fran’s husband, Gareth, is a detective. And in a move straight out of the How To Blow Up Your Marriage in 10 Easy Steps handbook, Gareth finds himself unknowingly investigating his wife’s crime while she smiles sweetly over breakfast.

At first, this book is an absolute dark comedy blast. Fran’s internal monologue is dry, hilarious, and chaotic in all the best ways. She’s the kind of unreliable narrator you weirdly root for while side-eyeing your own moral compass. Gareth, meanwhile, is painfully oblivious for much of the story, walking around like the human embodiment of a warning label. The man couldn’t spot a red flag if it drop-kicked him in the face.

The pacing flies in the first half — snappy dialogue, genuinely funny banter, and plenty of those "oh no, Fran" moments that make you audibly gasp. The absurdity of a detective slowly closing in on his own wife while the family cat steals every scene is the exact kind of ridiculous I signed up for.

But once we hit the second half, the book stumbles. The tone shifts from sharp dark humor to something heavier and less focused. Fran’s backstory brings in trauma and infertility struggles that absolutely deserve space, but the transition fumbles the balance. At times it feels like the plot can’t decide whether it’s a murder comedy or a domestic drama, and both tones start tripping over each other’s shoelaces.

That said, it’s hard not to be entertained by this level of chaos. Fran remains a compelling little chaos gremlin, Gareth eventually earns some sympathy, and Mep the permanently-dying cat is honestly the MVP of the whole book. The concept? Fantastic. The humor? Surprisingly sharp. The execution? Wobbly, but still enough to keep me turning pages.

Which is why I landed at a solid 3 stars for sheer concept, the surprisingly funny ride, and, of course, Mep being the furry little scene-stealer we all needed.

I support women’s rights, but most of all, I support women’s wrongs.

2/5 stars

(Btw nitpicky critique: she was technically not a serial killer bc she only killed 2 people and the FBI defines a serial killer as someone who has killed 3 or more people.)

A by-the-book police detective married to a serial killer - what could go wrong?

I'll admit I liked the second half of this book a lot more than the first half, as it took a bit for both Fran and Gareth to grow on me. But this book was also unexpectedly heartwarming.

Fran is funny in a crass way, but I was rooting for her by the end. Gareth was driving me a little up the wall. He was such a stickler and kind of dumb for a detective. However, they both seem to have big hearts and are genuinely there for each other in a positive way. Mep was definitely one of the best characters - Fran and Gareth's old, slightly aloof cat.

I liked how the back story slowly unfolded. I would have liked a more conclusive ending. Sometimes, I find ambiguity so unsettling. (OK - most of the time.)

Recommended for fans of revenge stories with sweet spousal relationships.

I may have mentioned a time or two (have I? 🤔) that I like my thrillers dark. I also like my thrillers to have an injection of humour because, let's face it folks, we could all do with a laugh. (Yes, I know there's nothing remotely funny about serial killers, but this IS a work of fiction I'm reviewing, okay!) This gem of a book ticks both of those boxes in a delightful way. 🗡
I loved Fran. She didn't have the best start in life, but she didn't let it hold her back. She may be a killer, but she's intelligent, a great cook, and she has a wicked sense of humour. But, she's married to a detective in CID. 😮
I'm not going to tell you any more, plot wise. I will tell you that Gareth, (Fran's husband) well, that guy was full of surprises. 🗡
I loved My Wife, The Serial Killer. Fast paced, twisty, thrilling and witty, this was an absorbing read. 🗡

A fun British dark-comedy about a female serial killer and her husband, the detective working her case.

The first 2/3rds of the story were so much fun and well-plotted, but I think the third act definitely fell apart at the seams. I didn’t like some of the narrative choices made, and the characterisation seemed to fly out the window. However, the first 70% was so much fun that I can’t lower my rating too much.

Fran was a great POV to read from, even if I find her motive lacking. She’s witty, dark and definitely fucked up, but so interesting! Her constant assurances that she ISN’T a psychopath (okay maybe she is) were great and I loved the love she has for her husband. Gareth is the ultimate people-pleaser but also a great detective, unfortunately for Fran. His POV wasn’t as fun as Fran’s, but watching his obsession with the case evolve as the story goes was really interesting. Their marriage is absolute goals, which I can’t believe I’m saying about a thriller following a literal murderer.

Overall a fun read with THE BEST fictional cat in the world (Mep has my heart) but I do wish the last 30% had been edited or altered or just … different. :/

A darkly funny thriller, featuring twisted humour, a feisty female murder, her husband the cop investigating the case, and so many secrets to be uncovered.

I knew from the prologue that this was going to be a wildly entertaining read!

I really enjoyed Fran’s inner dialogue, their old cat Mep, and seeing Gareth wrestle with his personal convictions. The writing style made this an addictive and easy read.

‘Yes, if it came to it, yes, I would, of course,’ I said as quietly as I could, while trying to hide my irritation with her. I didn’t think there was the slightest possibility of it ever seeming likely that Fran had killed Mr O’Neill; that the loving wife I had been with for a quarter of my life had murdered this old man in cold blood.

The way I was so excited to get this ARC. Not only are the title and plot so up my alley, but the cover is absolutely BEAUTIFUL!

I was so invested in the potential cat and mouse chase plot, and while that didn’t seem to start till a good chunk of the way in, I wasn’t mad. I loved that we got to meet and learn about Fran and Gareth in their own POVs. I absolutely adored them as a couple and seeing their married moments from fertility issues to Fran dealing with Gareth’s coworkers over her lasagne (which I would do the same for my man, to be honest). Their marriage was definitely a highlight in the book for me.

And while reading this book, I genuinely didn’t know who to root for nor could I really predict how it would all end. I wanted Fran to get away with it yet I wanted Gareth to solve it. (But, my god, the final half or so of the book kept me on the edge of my seat! Gareth’s character development was top notch.)

I’d also die for Mep.

Thank you, Netgalley, for the ARC!

My Wife, The Serial Killer by H.J. Garbett is a gripping and twisty psychological thriller that kept me hooked from the start. The premise is chilling—what if your spouse isn’t who you think they are?—and the story explores that question in a tense and emotionally complex way. I really enjoyed the main character’s inner conflict and the slow unraveling of the truth. Some parts felt slightly drawn out, but overall, the suspense and character depth made it a strong read. A solid 4 stars from me, and I’ll definitely keep an eye out for more from this author.

The story of a detective who’s wife is a killer, told from both of their perspectives, this starts off great and is really funny and sharp in what is essentially a farce and a very entertaining one at that.

The problem I had with this one is the second half of the book where it becomes much less humorous and tries to fully explain the wife’s childhood problems while in care and it loses all its wit and charm of the first half and becomes a little boring as the tone of the book changes completely.

Throw in a pretty ludicrous ending and it takes the shine off what for 50% at least was lol and fun romp with great narration and humour. I think if the tone had remained consistent throughout, the book would have been all the better for it. A real book of two halves. 5 stars for the first half. 2 stars for the second.

Many thanks to the publisher for the ARC through Netgalley.

Fran is married to a detective and when a neighbor is killed, she is the last person to see the victim alive. But did she kill him? A crazy tale with dark humor and a gripping narrative you just can't stop reading. Wow!

This is fun in a macabre sort of way. It has been pitched as Dexter meets Schitt's Creek and I don't think I could come up with a better comp.

Fran has just killed her neighbour. Aside from the obvious complications involved in sorting that out, her husband is a police detective, and not too shabby at his job. Endeavoring to get away with the crime without her husband noticing anything amiss results in a not-quite-slapstick dark comedy. Also there's a creaky old cat, subsisting on pure spite.

This is the kind of book that I'll probably forget I read in a couple of weeks, but I thoroughly enjoyed reading nonetheless. I could quibble with some of the character development (I agree with the reviews saying the husband did a not entirely believable 180 on his personality) but it's not a story intended to be anything but silly fluff. I won't hold any inconsistencies against the book when I had such a fun time with it.

Definitely one for fans of the Finlay Donovan books and the Molly the maid series.

Thank you NetGalley and the publisher for giving me the opportunity to read this book early!
I really tried to like this book…
I loved the FMC, Fran. She is quirky, chaotic, and a bad ass. But her husband is kind of a pussy (I don’t have a better word for him) and he is hard to like.
Sometimes, the transitions between chapters, places, and conversations were hard to follow. I would think I skipped a page or two and be wondering what is happening?! It also doesn’t help that this takes place in the UK (I believe?) and some of the terms/slang are way different.
I wish that Fran and Angus would have come out and talked about the trauma they share in the beginning to make their relationship more understandable. They just talked around the trauma for 50 percent of the book. Like who is Edith?! Just come out and say it.
For me, this was a slow read that was hard to get into and stay hooked.
So that is why this book gets a 2/5.
