In 1920s New York, uptown debutante Evie McKenzie can see that the world is changing. And while her parents may think she’s destined for a life of quiet conversation and polite society, she is determined to roar with the twenties—whatever the cost!
Evie knows she should really be getting her beauty sleep and dreaming of Roger White, the straight-laced Yale graduate her parents have chosen for her. Instead, she’s been heading out to the local speakeasy… and into the arms of dangerously charming Jack Taylor.
But when Evie discovers an unexpectedly wild side to Roger, he’s suddenly competition for smooth-talking Jack—and she has a decision to make. Should she appease her parents… or commit the ultimate rebellion? One thing’s for certain: Evie is going to have a lot of fun making up her mind…
I'm USA Today Bestselling author Delancey Stewart. My contemporary romances run the gamut of settings and setups, but they always deliver humor, heart and heat. It's a guarantee.
I write from my home in Denver, CO, where I manage a household full of boys and men. Okay, only one man. The hubs. But two boys. I mean, three if you count the hubs. (You see why I do words and not numbers. I was told there'd be no math in this bio. Someone lied.)
I grew up in California and have had more jobs than anyone on earth (personal trainer, pharmaceutical rep, copywriter, tech writer, marketing director, wine seller, elementary school teacher... I'm not kidding. The list. It goes on.) But the one I love the most is writing, in part because I get to meet people who love books and stories as much as I do! Please don't hesitate to get in touch to say hello, and don't forget to join my newsletter!
My decision to pick up Delancey Stewart's Prohibited! was purely self-indulgent. The cover caught my eye, but I really like the 1920s and jacket description sounded light and fun. My track record with new adult lit is decidedly hit and miss, but weighed against the modest length of the book, I figured I'd little to lose.
Historically speaking, there isn't an abundance of detail in this piece, but what's there speaks directly to the roar and buzz of New York City's jazz scene. Against all odds, Stewart creates a subtle ambiance, giving the book a distinct feel despite its brevity. Roger and Jack are fairly one dimensional, but I liked what Stewart did with Evie. Her sexual awakening paired with her growing independence and sense of self added a layer of depth where I'd not expected it.
Though only six chapters, Prohibited! proved a delightfully diverting piece and one I'd easily recommend to fans of Jax Garren.
What a wonderful era for the setting. 20’s life unfurls around you- and Evie wants to take advantage of everything the time has to offer – rather than settle into a quiet life. Prohibited is a prequel to a series set in the Roaring Twenties.
Evie is a natural flirt and enjoys time with Roger and Jack. Roger is the one her parents would like her to marry- but Roger is a charmer with a wild side. He seems so much more exciting. Who should she choose? I would be keen to read more in this series.
With many thanks to Carina Uk, the publisher, and Net Galley for a copy of this book.
PROHIBITED! is a prequel introduction to an upcoming historical series set in the Roaring Twenties that features Bright Young Things. It's a good teaser, it managed to give us firm insight to the characters and what they're like. Evelyn is a flirt, a little boy crazy, and a bit irritating sometimes but I guess given the state of things she's bound to be that way. Then there's this love triangle that is shaping up to be a risqué and dangerous as both suitors, Jack and Robert, are club owners and peddle alcohol which was prohibited during this time. I have a feeling that the first book's plot will revolve around this love triangle and I'm sure The rivalry between Jack and Robert will escalate and as both gives off this gangster vibe I'm sure it'll be suspenseful as well.
I wish the language was more authentic to the era and I'm hoping the next book will be more atmospheric. I do love the twenties and it would be awesome to get that feel from this novel.
This book was great! I love the Roaring Twenties with the flapper girls and the speakeasies. It's one of my favorite time periods. Delancey Stewart portrayed it well. I just didn't like the guy Jack that Evie was fooling around with. Gosh, what was she thinking? I'm glad she chose the right one in the end.
Great novella and start to a new series. I've never read from this era before and I'm looking forward. I'm not one for love triangles, but the way Stewart writes this, I'm thinking it could be a fun ride!!!
A great start to a Fabulous series! Evie is a New York Socialite during the Roaring 20's and has to navigate love and what her parents want from her. Vibrant characters and a colorful setting enchanted me from the first. Looking forward to more!
It was alright. Nothing great but nothing bad either. I wish we would have seen more character development but nevertheless I will read the second book.
This is the story of Evelyn McKenzie; almost eighteen years of age, and looking for some excitement in her life while living in New York City in the 1920s. She is the only daughter of uptown well-to-do parents who have her life mapped out for her, including her husband. The story is told from Evie's point of view, as she sneaks out of her bedroom window during the night to take part in New York City's underground scene. The story revolves around her desire for 2 men; who seem at first to be quite different, but as the story unfolds, they appear to have some similiarities. The story, although quite short, is well written, and I am looking forward to reading the next book in the series.
I was sent a copy of the book for review through Net Galley, as always, all opinions are my own.
I picked this up because out of every point in history I’m the most fascinated by the 20s. While the book is only 100 pages long, it manages to pack in a lot including a love triangle between Evie, Jack and Robert. Jack and Robert both have their dark sides, so I can’t wait to see how they develop as the series progresses. I think this has a lot of potential, but it's only 3 stars until the characters are fleshed out a little more.
Oh wow!!! What a fantastic and fun read!! Evie definitely has my attention! I love her view of life. She is young and wants to get out from what is expected of her. And I would say that she is definitely doing that! This is a quick & fun read! I can't wait for the next installment to see what unfolds in her life next!
