In the space of a morning, Vicky’s life changed. She started the day happily married, with a wonderful infant son and a doting husband. By lunchtime, her husband was dead and her child missing.
DI Jennifer Stone knows time is critical. She and her team need to find nine-month-old Harry quickly – but the case has reopened old wounds for her, reigniting a pain that had only just started to heal.
However, when people close to Vicky are hurt and her late husband’s estranged mother turns up, DI Stone suspects something may be going on behind the family’s closed doors. If she can’t figure out what, and soon, more people will die.
It begs the question; how well do you really know your family?
Scott Englefield grew up on the Isle of Wight. Despite being surrounded by idyllic beaches and woodland walks, he was often to be found with his head buried in a book. His love of reading endured into adulthood and now he spends his free time writing crime and psychological thrillers, often having to stop to fend off his cat James who believes his keyboard is the perfect place to sleep. He is in his mid-forties (and feels it) and lives with his wife, son and cat in the East of England. He grew a beard once – his wife hated it.
A police procedural at its best! The story follows multiple cases rather than one and I really enjoyed that. The police solved one case and another popped up. DI Jennifer Stone is back for the second book in her series but it can be read as a standalone. There are references to the first book but you are not missing anything if you don’t read it first. This book is an excellent mix of the DI’s personal life and her professional life. While things are going well at work, her personal life is falling apart. I throughly enjoyed this read and can’t wait to see where her story goes from here.
WOW!! Yet another absolutely gripping and addictive read by S. Englefield! This is the second book in the DI Jennifer Stone series, and while it can easily be read as a standalone, I highly recommend starting from the beginning because once you meet Jennifer, you won’t want to let her go.
The story wastes no time in pulling you in. Vicky starts her day as a happy wife and mother, but by lunchtime her husband is dead and her baby son is missing. The urgency of the case is heart-stopping, and DI Jennifer Stone and her team are racing against the clock. But as the investigation unravels, dark secrets, complicated family ties, and hidden motives start to surface — and the danger feels closer than anyone imagined.
I absolutely loved how Englefield wove the professional and personal sides of Jennifer’s life together. She is strong, determined, and clever, but also deeply human, with past traumas that add so much depth to her character. The multiple POVs worked brilliantly to give different angles of the mystery without spoiling the reveals. Every time I thought I had a handle on what was happening — BAM, another twist came along to prove me wrong!
The Isle of Wight setting was beautifully atmospheric, and I could picture every scene clearly thanks to Englefield’s vivid descriptions. It gave the book an extra layer of moodiness and suspense that made it impossible to put down. The pacing was spot-on: tense, emotional, and always propelling forward.
This is one of those books where you genuinely lose track of time because you just have to keep turning the pages. Shocking twists, heart-pounding suspense, emotional depth, and characters you can’t help but invest in — it has everything I want in a crime thriller.
S. Englefield is fast becoming one of my absolute favourite authors in the genre. I cannot wait to see what’s next for DI Jennifer Stone and this outstanding series. If you’re looking for a crime thriller that’s as addictive as it is emotional, Back to Haunt You is an absolute must-read.
Back to Haunt You was incredibly creepy with a ton of twists that had me gasping and chomping at the bit to get to the conclusion. This was the 2nd book featuring DI Jennifer Stone but was completely different compared to book 1 titled The Only Child.
Here is my review for Back To Haunt You by S Englefield
I thought this was a brilliantly plotted and gripping British police crime thriller that hooked me right from the start of the book. Detective Inspector Jennifer Stone was a superb character whose character was really well written, well detailed and fleshed out with her family of a husband and a young daughter called Sophie, who went missing a few months earlier so the wounds were still fresh in her mind. Vicky and Tom weren’t coping very well with lack of sleep due to Harry waking up so often during the night and disturbing their sleep. They were both washed out and cranky. That morning, Tom offered to take Harry to the supermarket and the park for a few hours to give Vicky some peace and a few hours to herself. The trouble was he collapsed in the supermarket carpark and someone kidnapped Harry from the car without anyone realising it until a few hours later. DI Stone and her team picked up the case, harrowing as it was. I loved reading this story and the procedures followed by DI Stone and her team. They were all detailed so well and I was gripped by the story and the characters. The characters were described in detail, written with such realism and acted their parts so well in the story. I felt it was like reading several police reports combined by DI Stone. I liked the author’s writing style which made it so easy to get into the story. I really like the character of DI Stone. She seemed very genuine in her actions in trying to solve cases and managing her staff until her new DS joined the team. She didn’t like that. This is a series I could really enjoy and I can’t wait to read the next book in the series. I love police procedurals, especially British ones and this is set on the Isle of Wight which will be the first time I have read one set there.

My Initial Thoughts I was excited to carry on reading the DCI Jennifer Stone series as I really enjoyed the first book. The book starts of with drama straight away and had me hooked. I was intrigued to see how this one went but straight away I started to lose respect for Jenny and found myself not liking her character. Plot The plot was really mixed with this one. Onstead of one crime to solve like book one, it was several crimes and it all surrounded one person. Vicky. It was an interesting plot line but when it come to Jenny I felt myself losing interest and wanting it to move along more quickly. Characters As you probably guessed I did not like Jenny in this book. Following incidents that happened in book one, her whole character has changed and not for the better. She seems focus on nothing but when the next glass of wine is coming. The rest of her team are great and George is still doing amazing work beside her, but ultimately she takes things out on a team that are just trying to work. Vicky however seems like the nicest of people who lands herself in the centre of all these horrifying crimes. Recommend If you enjoy crime thrillers, then this could be the series for you. Favourite Chapter/s My favourite chapters were 25 and 33. Summed up in one sentence A spirally detective and a victim where all the crimes surround her. Overall Wrap up I enjoyed the fact that this book had several crimes within it and each crime a different variety. I am hoping if there is another book coming in the series that Jenny will redeem herself. Stars – 3.6 stars.

Back to Haunt You is an engaging and emotionally powerful crime novel that explores the bonds of family, the weight of loss, and the secrets people hide. As the second book in the DI Jennifer Stone series, it combines a suspenseful investigation with a heroine whose own history makes her both vulnerable and compelling.
The novel begins with a shocking tragedy: Vicky starts her morning as a contented wife and mother, but by midday her world has been shattered. DI Stone is drawn into the urgent search for Vicky’s baby, Harry, and the case forces her to confront painful echoes from her own life. What follows is a tense inquiry where strained relationships, hidden agendas, and unsettling truths come to light—raising the question of whether danger is closer than anyone imagined.
Englefield’s style is sharp and atmospheric, weaving together tension and emotion with skill. The dramatic opening grips the reader instantly, and although the tempo eases after the first chapters, the story remains absorbing as it builds toward its conclusion. The Isle of Wight backdrop adds colour and authenticity, while the cast of characters—especially Vicky and Laura—are drawn with care.
DI Stone is an excellent central character: determined, perceptive, and haunted in ways that make her feel real. Readers who enjoy psychological mysteries or crime stories with strong emotional undercurrents should find this a rewarding read. It’s a solid continuation of the series, and I’m keen to see what challenges lie ahead for Jennifer Stone.
Back to Haunt You by S. Englefield is the second novel in the DI Jennifer Stone series. As opposed to the first book, this one contains several mysteries that revolve around a single individual: Vicky Collins. It all starts when her husband dies suddenly after grocery shopping, and their son goes missing. From there, several unfortunate events continue to happen that are seemingly separate instances. DI Stone and her team have their work cut out for them with these cases.
I greatly enjoyed the atmosphere the author was able to create. I felt the emotions Vicky was going through, and found myself admiring how strong she was. In addition, I enjoyed learning more about Jenny's team and getting to watch them grow stronger together. Jenny, on the other hand, was a little harder to like in this one. It was completely understandable that she was still struggling to deal with the events that occurred in the end of the first novel, but I didn't like how she constantly snapped at her team nor how she was treating her family throughout most of the novel. With that said, towards the end I did feel myself finding that soft spot I originally had for her again. The mystery is this novel was excellent; I was invested in discovering why all these events kept happening around one person. I look forward to seeing what will happen next.
I recommend this novel to anyone who enjoys a suspenseful police procedural. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Back to Haunt You is a gripping and emotionally resonant thriller that plunges deep into the complexities of family, grief, and the shadows we try to outrun. As the second installment in the DI Jennifer Stone series, it delivers both a compelling mystery and a richly layered protagonist whose personal pain adds depth to every decision she makes.
The story opens with a devastating twist: Vicky begins her day as a happily married mother, only to lose her husband and her infant son by lunchtime. DI Stone is tasked with finding nine-month-old Harry before it’s too late, but the case stirs up painful memories from her own past. As the investigation unfolds, secrets begin to surface—fractured relationships, hidden motives, and the chilling realization that danger may be lurking within the family itself.
Englefield’s writing is taut and evocative, balancing suspense with emotional nuance. The pacing is relentless, yet never rushed, and the twists are genuinely surprising. DI Stone is a standout character—resilient, intuitive, and haunted in a way that makes her deeply human.
For fans of psychological thrillers that explore the darker corners of domestic life, Back to Haunt You is a must-read. It’s a story that asks: how well do we really know the people closest to us? And what are we willing to uncover when the truth threatens everything?
With thanks to S Englefield, the publisher and NetGalley for the ARC.
Back to Haunt You by S. Englefield is a taut and emotionally charged follow-up that blends family tragedy with a chilling mystery. What begins as an intimate portrait of domestic life is shattered when sudden loss and a child’s disappearance set off a high-stakes investigation. At its heart, the novel is about love, loss, and the desperate search for answers when everything safe and familiar is ripped away.
Detective Inspector Jennifer Stone once again anchors the investigative side of the story, her determination and flaws adding grit and humanity. Englefield skillfully balances her procedural expertise with the raw grief and confusion of those left behind, creating a narrative that feels both urgent and deeply personal. The setting continues to add atmospheric depth, grounding the suspense in a world that is at once idyllic and menacing.
The pacing is brisker here than in The Only Child, with a sense of immediacy that pulls the reader through each chapter. While some dialogue can feel a touch heavy-handed and certain emotional beats are revisited more often than necessary, the tension rarely falters. The mystery unfolds with satisfying twists, and the emotional resonance ensures that the stakes feel real at every turn.

Having devoured the first instalment of the Jennifer Stone mysteries by S. Englefield, I was very happy to plunge into the second “Back to Haunt You”. Once again, the pace is brisk, one crime is successfully solved before another starts to spread its web. Vicky is a happily married young mother before her world falls apart. Her husband dies unexpectedly and her young son is kidnapped…..from then on, a series of tragedies, seemingly unconnected, keep the team busy teasing out threads of inquiry and leading to unexpected conclusions. I spent the first section of the book convinced I had the culprit….only to be proved firmly wrong and was then glued to the narrative as the drama unfolded. Jennifer Stone is a wonderfully drawn character who while carrying memories of previous trauma, is trying to balance her work and home life. Unfortunately some questionable behaviour, forces her to confront her problems and her struggles are so well described, that despite it all we feel empathy and become invested in her plight. The supporting characters are strong and the plot is twisty and exciting. Highly recommended for lovers of police procedural mysteries. Thanks to BookSirens for the ARC and this is my honest review. Bring on number three!
Another fantastic book! The second instalment in the DI Jennifer Stone series gripped me from the very first page. We meet happily married Vicky, whose life unravels in one day after the sudden death of her husband and the abduction of her nine-month-old son, Harry. DI Stone, grappling with her own demons and a struggling home life, leads a frantic investigation that twists and turns at every corner. The case forces her to confront personal demons from her past, adding an extra layer of psychological conflict to the plot. The pace is expertly controlled, starting fast, slowing to build tension as the team works through the next shocking element, and then racing to a shocking conclusion. The team is full of interesting and loyal characters, including the introduction of a new sergeant, Laura, which adds yet another emotional conflict for Jennifer to tackle. With complex family secrets spilling out and a plot that keeps you guessing until the final moments, this book is an absolute must-read. You won't be able to put it down. I can't wait for the next installment! I received an advance copy and this is my honest opinion.
1 I am a grammarian. Grammar matters to me. Two characters, including a main one, said “me and so-and-so” rather than “so-and-so-and I” repeatedly. One at least was college educated and should have known better. 2 The plot twist in this irritated me because it was too much like the plot twist in the first book in the series. I don’t want to give anything away, so I won’t say more. 3 Jenny seems to have only the ability to grin in a “wolfish” or “predatory” way, as evidenced by how many times these words appear. It makes her sound mean and cruel. She could be fierce or triumphant without being the other things. Something to consider. I need to like the main character. (She can be flawed, of course, but I need to like her.) 4 Similarly, everyone’s eyes “narrowed” an awful lot throughout the book. Isn’t there another way to say this? Peered? Scrutinized? Considered? I liked the story. I think it would have benefited from a good editor and copyeditor (or different ones). I am not sure I will read more in the series. I was annoyed repeatedly while reading this one.
This is the second in the series and it looks like the whole series is going to be a cracker if the quality of the first two books are anything to go by. What starts with the death of a man and the abduction of his baby son soon escalates. I was wondering where the book was going with the solving of one crime so early but I need not have worried with the way other events transpired.
Overall this was quite a complex read with the author leading us down various trails and hoodwinking me along the way. There's so many twists here and I loved how the team were also left scratching their heads as they ran into dead ends. The addition of a new DS was good. I liked the impact it had on Jenny. We get to see more of Jenny's homelife after events in the prior book. You don't have to have read it already but I think it would be of benefit. The ending was quite sad and I wonder what lies next in store for Jenny and her team.
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
An excellent second book in the DI Jennifer Stone series, Back to Haunt You maintains the quality of the first outing and builds on the characterisation of Stone and her colleagues.
I have to admit that I was somewhat concerned when the initial case seemed to be resolved inside the first quarter of the book, and I wondered how the remainder could maintain the level of tension. I need not have worried. As the story draws out into multiple seemingly unrelated crimes surrounding the victim, along with Stone's increasingly fraught personal life and some strain with a new work partner; this book becomes an easy page-turner.
Reading the first book (The Only Child) will give some background into Stone's mindset, especially regarding her personal life, but it's not absolutely required as this book easily works as a stand-alone. Having said that, read the first book anyway - it's just as good as this one.
Many thanks to the author and BookSirens for arranging the early copy on which this review is based.

Tom and Vicky are raising their nine month old son, Harry, and are chronically exhausted. After a particularly bad night, Tom decides to take Harry with him so Vicky can relax a little. The next thing Vicky knows is her husband is dead and her son has been kidnapped.
This book is faceted in that there are multiple crimes that take place after the kidnapping and during the investigations a lot of drama, trauma, and secrets are revealed. There are a few twists that you won't see coming resulting in a chilling climax and conclusion.
I like the way the storyline incorporates the professional and personal lives of its key players so you get the human element alongside the professional persona.
I didn't realize this is the second book in a series, but it can be read as a standalone. I look forward to more books in this series and going back and reading the first book.
Thanks to the author, publisher, and NetGalley for an ARC of this book.
Psychological thriller that keeps you on edge!! This is the second DIvStone book. I really enjoyed the first where we are introduced to Amelia, Jenny and George. Jenny and George are back and working on the case involving Vicky and her family.
Vicky is put through the mill in this. The initial scare of losing her son was bad enough but what unfolds next is just a constant nightmare.
I like that this has a few questionable characters in to throw you off the scent and keep you guessing. I have a suspicious mind so everyone was a suspect to me 😂🤣
Vicky does seem to hold her own throughout despite everything that happens. I think I'd have asked the police for a safe house had I endured the things she'd gone through. The bad guy wasn't obvious and you could understand the motive in the end.
After reading (and loving) this author's debut novel back in Feb this year, I absolutely jumped at the chance to read this second book in the Di Jennifer Stone series.
We're back on the Isle Of Wight with the gang and this time DI Stone is thrust into a case that brings back memories of a more personal nature.
Still struggling to juggle her work and home life, as well as trying to process the events of the case, DI Stone faces a tough time.
Once again, we see a complex and ever changing case that gives us plenty of opportunity to follow the leads and create our own theories about what happened - only to find that there are twists heading our way that keep us guessing.
I really liked the way Stone tackled the case, directing her team well - but a new face in the group brings new challenges ahead.
This is well plotted with some really interesting characters.
There's lots of potential for future storylines especially as we explore the team's personal lives along with the cases.
The writing style draws us in from the start and I love the mix of the character development alongside the individual cases.
This was another great read and I think I'm full invested in Thai series now - I hope there will be many more books to come in the future.
DI Stone and her team are tasked with the kidnapping of a young boy, a hit and run, a murder, an arson attack, a burglary and everything connects to Vicky who seems to be at the centre of it all.
The author writes with great description and detail which brings the characters and the setting to life throughout the pages.
DO Stone is a complex character and in book two of the series we see the professional mask vs the personal mask. which is in full self destruct mode you witness her spiralling out of control with her poor decision making and self medication to numb the trauma of her past experience.
Having just returned from a trip to the Isle of Wight it was nice to read of some familiar land marks and the island defiantly sets the scene for the vivid descriptions written by the author.
Prior to reading book 2 for this tour I also read book 1 and both books are excellent. What clear from both is how intriguing the whole storylines are and how family is at the heart of it all, with secrets, dysfunctions and lies to discover. Di Jennifer Stone herself has a complicated family life and although you can read each book as a standalone they do giving a better insight into the personal lives of the recurring characters. The plot is very cleverly woven together and keeps you on the edge of your seat, the suspense is top notch. I’m now a big fan of this series and cannot wait for another instalment
Thank you @zooloosbooktours for having me on this tour #SENGLEFIELD #BACKTOHAUNTYOU #zooloosbooktours
This is the second book in the series following DI Jenny Stone, who lives and works on the Isle of Wight, in both her professional and personal life. It was nice again to read about places on the Isle of Wight local to me which brought the story to life, and I particularly like how the author brings in Jenny’s personal life into the story. Most of the story was engaging, although it did feel a little slow at times. Some more twists and turns would also add to the story to make it feel more exciting; however, I did enjoy this police procedural overall and look forward to any further instalments.
I received an advance review copy from BookSirens for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
An excellent 2nd book following DI Jennifer Stone. Located on an island off the coast of England, this installment follows Vicky, a young mother whose husband dies from a heart attack. Tragedy follows her as she struggles to face her life raising her son on her own. First, the baby is kidnapped, then her SIL is injured. As more incidents piled up, Jenny is fighting her own battles in her personal life. Will she be able to pull herself together in order to help this young woman? A great thriller that shows the difficulties of combining home life with a very demanding job. Love the development of character, the intriguing storyline, and the twists that you won't see coming. Thanks to BookSirens for the ARK of this book.
I think Mr. Engelfield's stories get better and better. I loved The Only Child, but Back to Haunt You provided a deeper look into DI Stone's personal life, while not neglecting the central mystery. Mr. Englefield covers the procedural details quite well, but never forgets that the human element is most important. His writing captivates the reader from the first page and doesn't let go. I found myself reading much later than I should have been and resisting any interruption that required me to put the book aside. I can't wait to see what he has in store for Jennifer and her team. I will be watching closely for the next book. I received a review copy from the author via BookSirens, and this review reflects my honest and voluntary opinion.
This book surprised me in that there was more than one crime in play throughout it. And, probably because I was reading as Halloween approached, I was waiting for some ghost or deceased person to be doing the haunting.
DI Jennifer Stone was an interesting protagonist as she was severely challenged in both her personal and professional life. She may be flawed, but she is tough and dedicated to solving the cases.
It is a solid police procedural with plenty of twists to keep you guessing. It is the second book in the series, but it works well as a standalone. The fact that it did not leave me wanting to read the first book made me think it was worth 4 stars, rather than 5.
I received an advance review copy for free and am leaving this review voluntarily.
Back to Haunt You is the 2nd book in the DI Jennifer Stone, which is a well written police procedural with a gripping plot with twists and turns. Vicky starts the morning as a happily married mum of one, but by lunchtime she’s a widow and her baby is missing. DI Stone knows time is critical, however she is still struggling with the past events which involved her old DS, so when a new DS is assigned to her team she’s not happy. Can she put the past behind her and concentrate on her current case.
A really enjoyable read, however I felt the ending was a little rushed. I look forward to reading more in the series.
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Although I didn't love this book quite as much as the previous one, it was still a really enjoyable read. DI Stone is brought into investigate a missing child, taken while his father lay dying in a supermarket car park. As she investigates, more people close to the mother are hurt..what secrets is she hiding? Being set on the Isle of Wight was great as I recognised a lot of the places, and could imagine clearly where the action was taking place. The plot moves along at a good pace, and Jenny is a likeable if flawed main character. Thanks to Book Sirens for sending me an advanced copy to read and review.
A mystery, suspense thriller with follows the case of a dead husband and his missing child. This is the second book of the DI Jennifer (Jenny) Stone series but it can be read as a standalone. As always, I appreciated the depiction of police procedure. While I enjoyed this read, at times the foreshadowing was too direct as opposed to providing hints that made sense later upon the reveal. Some aspects of the events regarding Jenny were quite predictable, as they relate to the fallacy of work vs. life balance, but I understand why it was presented alongside this particular case.
Thank you to BookSirens for this complementary novel in exchange for my honest review.
Holy Crap!! Back to Haunt You had me hooked from page one😳📖 This book was such a rollercoaster. Emotional, dark, and full of twists that kept me on edge right until the end😬💔
I felt every ounce of Vicky’s panic and heartbreak💔😢 One moment her life is perfect, and the next, it’s completely shattered. The tension builds so fast, and DI Jennifer Stone is such a strong, layered character🔥 You can really feel her determination and the pain from her past creeping in.
It’s one of those stories that makes you question how well we really know the people closest to us👀 The family secrets, the lies, the emotional twists. It’s all there, perfectly woven together.
The flawed detective might be a trope in thriller novels, but I find this done extremely well, in a really human way.
This novel is shocking in the way that the mother at the centre of the mystery is hit with allll the difficult and tough events - highly emotional. In turn, this mystery reflects back at DI Stone her own failings and perceived own failings.
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
I found it written in a really engaging style (for such difficult topics) that will encourage me to read also future novels in this series
