Black Robert. The most feared of all King Edward's men…
When an English knight approaches the charred ruins of her sister's Scottish village, Gaira of Clan Colquhoun knows better than to trust this fierce-looking man. Yet, struggling to set her war-shaken world to rights, she has little choice.
Robert of Dent will see her to safety. He can promise nothing more. Never again will he make a vow like the one he broke years ago, even though Gaira's fierce resilience makes him long to protect her.
But what will happen when Gaira discovers exactly who Robert is?
Nicole first discovered romance novels hidden in her grandmother’s closet. Convinced hidden books must be better, Nicole greedily read them. It was only natural she should start writing them (but now not so secretly). If she isn’t working on the next book in her historical series, she can’t be found. No, seriously. Because she’s always working on the next story!
I have not read a medieval romance in many years. I was hesitant to read one since I have been on such a regency or victorian romance kick. Nicole Locke's book was a great book to get me started again. It tells the tale of Gaira of the Clan Colquhoun and the English knight, Black Robert, she falls in love with during the time of King Edward I and his wars with Scotland.
Nicole keeps you engaged in the story and the struggles the two have because of the differences in their lives and loyalties. I would suggest this title if you want to return to medieval times.

I don’t have adequate words for how much I love this book!!
There is so much I love about this, let me count the ways….
Riveting and edge-or-your-seat plot!
Ravishing and dashingly god-like hero, with some serious well-honed, wide shoulders (I really do have an unhealthy obsession with arms😄) who just happens to love black!
A fabulously sweary, determined, stubborn, proud and impatient heroine who sees (and rather likes, she’s not alone there) what lies beneath the warrior's black-clad layers!
A kick-arse enemy to lovers/ forced proximity while they travel together through dangerous highlands, love story!
Villians, friends (who appear later in the series) and three growlings, wanting to rip something apart; highlanders – my life is complete!
It’s perfection – that is all I can say, this book is perfect and now I am kicking myself for leaving it so long before reading it!
Why??
The Knights Broken Promise is the first book in the epic Lovers and Legends series, I have read them all but one; Bram’s story which is my next read, and I can honestly say this has shot right to the top as one of my favourites (it’s currently battling for a top position with The Knights Scarred Maiden!)
Robert of Dent, a legend in his own right, a man whose dark reputation is blacker than his favourite black shirt, the notoriously infamous, ruthless killing machine that is Black Robert, King Edwards's most revered and feared Knight. He has been sent to Scotland on the King's orders, ordinarily, I would be hissing at the invading Englishman for their treatment of the Scottish people, yet here I fell under Robert’s raw, brutal and monosyllabic spell as soon as I met him.
Honestly, there is something about a black-clad man wielding a huge sword that sets my heart a flutter!🔥
After hearing of the slaughter that his fellow English soldiers have done in the small village of Doonhill, Robert needs to see with his own eyes at what happened and when he does there is a palpable disgust and shame. Once there he meets a cauldron-wielding woman who isn’t afraid to clonk him around the head with said cauldron if he steps out of line. As the first meetings go, this one is very crash, bang and who the hell are you? Act first, and ask questions later!
In my opinion, this is always a good sign that the relationship between the lead characters will be good fun!
Gaira having fled the marriage her brother; the Laird, arranged for her, she flees to her younger sister Irvette’s only to find her beloved sister along with the entire village has been slaughtered and the only survivors are four children who have no one but Gaira to keep them safe.
So the sudden appearance of a huge armed Englishman, tramping about the place instantly puts her on edge, he survival instincts kick in she needs to keep herself and those children safe, plus she doesn’t trust that the man before her wasn’t a part of the massacre, hence the clouting him with a cauldron!
She does love that cauldron, LOL!
She soon realises that he is not like those who destroyed the village, he isn’t a black-hearted devil (though some would say he is the devil incarnate), she makes a deal with him and soon they find themselves on the road on their way to Colquourn land with four children.
The relationship between Robert and Gaira isn’t easy, there is so much that they haven’t told each other, they are both so guarded and there is huge distrust Robert has one hell of a secret that could put them all in danger if people discovered who he is. Yet, there is so much tantalizing chemistry between them, that the air crackles with brooding lust.
There are so many wonderful moments; the fight scene in the village, Robert showing his softer side with the children, Gaira putting all the men in their places; which included her growling brothers and not to mention some very saucy sexy scenes besides a lake (ouh la la)!
I have been in a proper Scottish mood recently, I’ve been binging on Scottish set Films, TV shows and books, especially when said books have strong Highlander characters, which this has in spades and very excited to read Bram’s story next, and then on to the Graham cousins.
This book gave me real Braveheart (without the disembowelling, obviously) and Outlander vibes, it’s dramatic, darkly evocative, sexy and full of raw, brutal emotion, tension, atmosphere and a sense of danger at every turn with Nicole Locke’s brilliantly compelling narrative.
I loved it, I can’t say too much about it, and I can’t recommend it enough!
Love this book! The dynamic between the two main characters is so much fun. Plus the heroine swears a lot Gaelic which really adds to the dialogue. The mood and setting feel authentic, which was nice. The author has clearly spent a lot of time studying the period. The heroine is no shrinking violet and takes charge of her fate but terrible circumstances lead her down a different path. The hero is trouble, moody but kindhearted. So many authors fall down the rabbit hole of turning the hero into a jerk, but not our hero here. The backstory for both characters in fully realized and the secondary characters are well written. Overall this is a fun read that really sweeps you off to a different time and place.
Black Robert. The most feared of all King Edward's men…
I actually read In Debt to the Enemy Lord first. But I liked Robert more. Aye! I love it when they are a bit of mysterious. And I could not not read this book with an accent.
This was the first book I have had the pleasure to read from author Nicole Locke and I absolutely loved it! I will definitely be reading her other books!
The Knight's Broken Promise is the first book in the Lovers and Legends Series. Robert of Dent is an English Knight fighting for King Edward in Scotland. Gaira of Clan Colquhoun is a young scottish woman who has run away from her betrothed to her sisters village. Robert and Gaira meet in the massacred village of Gaira's sister and oh my what a meeting...
This story was so much more than just a romance. Nicole did a wonderful job of pulling you into the story and I honestly had a hard time putting it down. I absolutely adored Robert & Gaira as a couple, two people who start out as enemies but under extremely harsh and unusual circumstances end up helping each other and eventually fall in love. With fascinating secondary characters, drama, humor and of course a fabulous romance this has everything you could want in a book. Highly recommend and look forward to reading the rest of the books in this series!

The Knight’s Broken Promise by Nicole Locke is a beautiful love story born from tragedy. Robert of Dent, is a hardened English warrior, known to all as Black Robert. Gaira is a Scottish lass with problems of her own, in a world where their two countries are at war. I adore the characters in this tale, especially the children! I adore the way Gaira curses! Watching them fall in love and become a family is so beautiful!
There is much to like in this book, and so much to dislike. Loved Gaira and the swear words she used (which I couldn't pronounce) that made me laugh; specially loved the children who made the story. Did not care for Robert till nearly the end nor the violence or the steaminess. Really was about 3.5 stars but rounded up.
A new author for me. Received her first three books of the Lovers and Legends series as Christmas gifts. Have enjoyed this book very much. Interesting characters set in a time when the world was changing too fast.
I enjoyed this medieval romance. Ms. Locke created a nice balance between the romance, the adventure, and the character development and descriptions of both the adults and the children in the story. The hero had many admirable qualities and the heroine was brave and independent.
Não prometeu nada e entregou tudo! A dinâmica do casal é super divertida, eles tem muita química e as interações com as crianças são fofíssimas e engraçadas, com aquele toque de romance medieval feito pra te entreter. Super valeu a leitura, dou 3/5 ⭐️
I was super nervous when I got this book out as it's based in Scotland like I am. Sometimes when it's not Scottish authors writing about a historical romance it doesn't always work.
During the reign of King Edward there existed a knight whose reputation earned him the name of Black Robert because of his deeds towards the Scots. After hearing of a carnage by some troops of the king's at Doonhill near Dumfries, Robert of Dent decides to go there to investigate the truth of the matter. Meanwhile, Gaira of Clan Coloquhoun has already arrived at Doonhill in the hopes of escaping an arranged marriage planned by her brother only to find everyone slaughtered and the village burned to the ground! Her sister, her sister's husband, gone! Where is their daughter? Finding the toddler under a bureau, Gaira sets out to bury the dead at night so that the other children whom she's discovered don't see them when Robert of Dent arrives. She doesn't know who he is but forces him to help her bury the dead, then take them to the nearest village and then decides he needs to help her take them home. Of course nothing goes quite like it's planned and Robert is recognized, her betrothed showed up to claim her and upon arrival on clan lands, the brothers want to kill him!
What made this a great story is the backstory of each main character. They should have been mortal enemies but circumstances forced them together and Robert saw something in Gaira that he admired. Gaira, meanwhile, didn't know who he really was but saw a man she could depend upon. Even under adverse conditions, they were there for each other and when the truth came out, it didn't matter. Set against King Edward's campaign against the Scots, this is an entirely believable story.
Scottish borders, Gaira of Clan Colquhoun comes upon the village she was fleeing to to find it in ruins and only a few damaged children remaining, when Robert of Dent also comes upon the village, while he investigates what soldiers under his command have done, he offers to help her get to safety. Romance ensues.
