In her mind, Jan is a modern-day Austen protagonist.

As a child, she created elaborate stories involving a pretend cattle ranch guarded by vegetarian dinosaurs and went on adventures with her stuffed teddy bear, creatively named Ted.

After getting out of college in four years (an astounding feat) she began a career in advertising and marketing. Extensive reading during work travel rekindled her imagination and her Rock, Paper, Scissors series was born. These YA Urban Fantasy books are full of action, snark and a hint of romance.

Now she writes full-time in her hometown of New Orleans. The city is its own character in her 22 book paranormal romance series. Those feature a variety of Supernatural Main Characters in search of love. An enchanted deck of tarot cards adds a unique twist to the interwoven storylines of her G.R.I.T.S. books.

Jan Mau Hill writes fast-paced books featuring clever and bold heroines. If that sounds interesting, she’s the author for you.

The good news? I'm moving to a new and exciting home. The bad news? Now I have to go through my soon to be ex-house, sort out all the junk I never should have bought in the first place and sell it on eBay while packing the rest in cardboard boxes. Stress city!

Lucky for me, along came "Unlawful," the 10th installment in my favorite paranormal romance series. Nothing melts stress away like tucking into a novel you know is going to be good.

This time, the heroine is Piper, a fae lawyer, who in order to help her sister must fake an engagement to her favorite frenemy, Rayne. Like all the MC's in this series, Piper draws a card from an enchanted Tarot deck—this time, The World—to help her find love, joy, and peace. Aptly enough, her non-corporeal helper takes the form of Atticus Finch from "To Kill A Mockingbird."

Piper will need the help, because to complicate matters more, she must take on a landmark legal case in Fairy. Here author Jan Mau Hill leans into Fae tropes as well as romantic ones, delivering a paranormal double whammy. The result is a fun and snarky scream of a novel, concluding with an HEA you didn't think possible until it arrives.

Just what I needed during this stressful time.

Another enjoyable episode of who is going to be the next couple in this G.R.I.T.S. series. In reading previous books and recognizing the characters, I would never have guessed that Lawyer Piper Turner, also a Fall Fae, would fall for PR Superman Rayne Givens, a Summer Fae halfling. The banter between these two never screamed romance to me and I really thought they loathed one another as they were uber competitive since high school. When Piper gets an email with some fake comprising pictures, she turns to her frenemy Rayne for help. What happens next can only be described as a whirlwind of epic proportions. From fake engagements, weddings, and danger lurking at every turn, to an enchanted fairyland, courtroom proceedings, to a bona fide engagement. Unlawful will keep you turning the pages to find out the next adventure on tap for these two. A light enjoyable read with so much detail that I feel like I’m right there in the Fae Underground. Can’t wait for the next book in this series!

The title of the latest book in the series is a strong clue to a pivotal moment in the plot. The climax of the story finds main character Piper, a lawyer, facing off in a courtroom battle against a bitter ex-lover and sinister forces with a despicable agenda. The serious issue at stake (I won’t spoil the plot) has implications for the entire Fairy community in New Orleans and beyond.

As if this wasn’t enough, Piper has to navigate a burgeoning relationship decades in the making. Solve numerous wedding crises as her sister’s maid of honor. And accept the help of an entity from the powers-that-be, taking the form (and voice) of the lawyer Atticus Finch from To Kill A Mockingbird (played by Gregory Peck in the movie).

Lots going on in this new book. I enjoyed the plot variety and the interplay between Piper and her childhood rival, Rayne, when their romance finally begins to blossom. Two thumbs up!

Piper and Rayne have a history of bickering and not getting along. When they have to work together and pretend to be engaged, Piper discovers maybe their bickering wasn't what she thought. With humor and wisdom, Jan Mau Hill draws the reader into a romance with depth. Her characters are well drawn and the book has humor sprinkled throughout.

I loved Piper's heart for others, even when that left her drained and overworked. Rayne's love for Piper was so evident, and he stood by her even when she discouraged him. I loved this story. The romance is very sweet and hits all the feels.

Thank you to the author for an early copy of Unlawful. All opinions are my own.

Another great entry in the G.R.I.T.S series. Piper and Rayne are thrust together again to deal with a crisis, but this time it’s personal. Piper has been personally attacked, possibly foiling her sister’s perfect wedding. She needs help from her competitive, frustrating, but competent frenemy Rayne. Can they solve the mystery of who has done it and why? On the trail, they find deeper mysteries at work, but also truths about themselves they don’t want. A risky trip to Fairy could force them to see the truth. A great read with wonderful characters.

I loved Piper’s story! It was a pleasure to learn more about the Fae. Piper and Rayne are two strong characters and I loved their interactions. Part of why I enjoy this series is that the peripheral characters are ones I’m already familiar with having read other books in the series. I also enjoy this series because the characters and world they inhabit is so well described I feel I could visit there. I’m ready to read more! These are my opinions after devouring an early copy of the book.

DON’T READ IN PUBLIC! I laughed out loud. Unlawful is a fun enemies to lovers romp that will leave you with a smile. Piper is a lawyer with control issues and Rayne shatters her control. This is part of a series but can be read standalone.

This was my first introduction to the G.R.I.T.S series. I think anyone can relate to Lawyer Piper that it's much easier and less vulnerable to help others and think logically and factually. But face to face with fate and love, how long can that denial last? The story is fun and the romance is slowly pulling you in. Rayne is that man! Sassy and grounding. I definitely need the rest of the series.
