A truly worthy succcesor
Many times in dark fantasy books authors fall
Prey to the bridge book fallacy of trying to set up too many plot lines. This book not only escapes this pitfall but soars far above its predecessor by adding more emotional depth, superb action sequences, and expanding the lore in a poignant way. Can’t wait to see more!

A Bitter Thaw is a dark fantasy novel which follows a multitude of characters across a battle for power and dominance, often between men and gods.The dark tones are laid out in the prologue, giving the reader a sense of dread, and then very quickly the dynamics between soldiers and gods are unravelled, leading to some great early encounters.
I enjoyed reading of Akylaire in the early stages for his humour and determination as well as his battles alongside Baldana in an epic war. The turmoils of Fedmule really drove the plot and carried it far, as did the subplot with Zerasha and Sakkati. Fights between Fedmule and Itzal showed the brutality of the writing and the world, which gave me strong Witcher vibes. The focus on the gods however sets this book apart from other dark fantasies.
The lore is rich and deep, with references like the fall of Kana Balerrha revealed slowly as the story progresses or why the status of a godkiller is so important to the soldiers. I enjoyed the phrase ‘War is a warrior’s game’ as it summed up greatly the bloody and battle hardy story of revenge, sacrifice, power, and legacy.
