Love Potion

Rate this book
I’ve been in love with my best friend for years. It’s about time I do something about it.

Everyone knows I’m in love with my best friend. Except him. Jerryn and I are like peas in a pod, like peanut butter and jelly, like all things good that go together, but in spite of our bond, the romance has never sparked. At least not on his end.

I’m not exactly sure when I fell so hard for him, but it’s been ages since anyone else has even caught my gaze. He thinks I’m a serial dater with a packed calendar of casual flings, and I let him believe that because it’s safer than admitting the truth-  there’s no one but him.

As each of our friends move from single to committed, the urge to tell him how I feel grows. I have to be willing to put it all on the line, to show him that I know him better than anyone and I still want him, and that all the men who have failed him before were nothing but roadblocks to our forever.

I could be the man of his dreams. I just have to be brave enough to prove it.

Love Potion is book five in Last Call, a contemporary series set in the New Onyx universe. You can expect tons of pining, a dash of insecurity, secret feelings, grey-ace demi rep, a touch-starved affectionate bond, and finally two men realizing what’s always been right in front of them.

- Ace/Demi representation
- Slow burn

This is Book 5 in the Last Call series, and it's the story I wanted from the very start. I always wanted to know why Bane and Jerryn weren't a couple as there was obviously something there between them that was more than friendship, they always seemed closer than best friends. This is the story I've been waiting for and I wasn't disappointed. Jerryn and Bane's story was perfect for them. Jerryn needs the steadiness that only Bane can give him and just needs to realise that his best friend can be more than that, if he'll just be able to realise it.

Bane, for his part, has been in love with Jerryn and knows him better than anyone and I was here for Jerryn finally being able to vocalise his feelings about his sexuality and be secure enough to be able to explore everything with Bane. I love that both finally got everything they needed and they're just too damn perfect together, I was here for the whole story. This is the finale to the Last Call series and it's a perfect sendoff for the Mobys crew, it's been fun spending time with each different guy and seeing their very different stories. I highly recommend this series as I've enjoyed them all.

I received an ARC and this is my honest review.

Every so often, a series comes into your life that you both can't wait for and don't want to end. The Last Call series was one of those for me. From the beginning, you are immediately interested and invested in this found family of men who, for their own reasons, all end up jumping onto what seems like a wild idea to move to a smaller town and open a LGBTQ+ bar. Each of the men is at a point in their lives where they need a change. In the process of starting over, over time, they all find something else that had been missing in their lives - love. Each book in the series was better than the last, and in Love Potion, the final book, we finally see Jerryn and Bane get their happy ending.

Bane has been in love with his best friend since they met 20 years ago. Jerryn, for reasons he's only shared with Bane, doesn't feel like he's worthy of love. Everyone else can see that Bane is madly in love with his friend, and he finally decides he's waited long enough and believes that with risk will come reward.

Bane and Jerryn quickly became my favorite couple in the series. The way that Bane supports Jerryn as he struggles was achingly beautiful. The love and support between these two was perfection. I liked, too, that this book included struggles with sexuality that aren't often included in books, in this case asexuality/demisexuality, and explored them in a respectful way.

All in all, another five-star read from Mia Monroe. This can be read as a standalone, but to truly grasp the full picture and understand the characters better, I recommend starting the series from the beginning.

Sweet End to the Series

Well, that came around quickly - I feel like I only just read book 4.

A nice, sweet HEA for the only couple within the initial friend group - Bane and Jerryn.

Aside from the series set up, this is the shortest book, though it did feel longer than some of the others.

I loved the representation of Jerryn’s sexuality and Bane’s acceptance. It did seem a little repetitive to me throughout but I did enjoy getting to see them both acknowledge they were more than best friends.

Nice little round up of everyone at the end also.

I don't want this series to end!

This has been such a lovely series and Mia really did save the best for last. I'm always sad to see a series I love end; I know in theory all good things come to an end and there often really is only so much within one series that can be written but I come to really love the characters and don't want to see their stories end (even if they do so in the most amazing ways). That being said, I actually think this really was the perfect way to close out the series. Bane and Jerryn were the couple I was most excited for and initially I had wished they wouldn't be last because I didn't want their book to also have the sadness of the end of the series. I was so wrong though. Their book made this series finish on the perfect note. Bane and Jerryn kind of symbolised all the amazing things about all the couples in the series. Jerryn's journey of coming to accept himself and learn that he doesn't need to be anyone but himself. Bane's unwavering solidity in the face of Jerryn's self-doubt, his unwillingness to let Jerryn think he wasn't perfect just as he was, the patience of waiting until Jerryn was in a place to actually hear Bane. Both Bane and Jerryn are genuinely amazing people who were also good at their very core. They might not be perfect, they might not deal with things perfectly or see things straight away but they're good, kind, genuine people who are working towards something special. I also loved the round up at the end - if a series is going to end I want to feel like it ends solidly and this did. It felt complete... not that these guys' stories were over but that they were where they needed to be, with the people they needed to be with and truly happy. So I'm sorry we won't get more from these guys, but I'm so glad that Mia ended this the way she did and I can't wait to enjoy rereading them all!

this was sooooo good. i wanted more, it needed to be 500 pages. I COULD READ ABOUT THEM FOREVER. bane is THE man, like he is obsessed with jerr, he is what everyone deserves in a partner. and jerr is such a sweetheart, he deserves all the happiness in the world, all the time he spent looking for someone who could understand him and accept him as he is, only to finally open his eyes and see that he already had that man.

LOOOOOOOOOOOVEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE THIS SERIES.
10/10 would recommend.

“first of all, you’re not in my way. you’re never in my way”

“thanks for taking care of me”
“always, jerr. always”

“it’s you and me, jerr. always has been, always will be. no matter what”

“you want to kiss me?”
“always have”

“you’re the only person i want to spend my free time with”

“bane…”
“what, babe?”

“i got you”
“i know”

“this is forever. just us. you and me, jerr”

“jerryn, babe, i’m in love with you”

“i was never gonna fall for someone else when you’ve had my heart all along”

“being alone with you is my favorite part of the day”
“mine too, sweet stuff”

“you can do whatever you want to me”

“i fell in love with you the second i saw your sweet face”

“the easiest thing i’ve ever done is love you”

NO LIKE SHUT UP. SHUT THE FUCK UP. this man literally yearns for him while in the same room: ‘and it’s the way he looks at me like no one else exists. like right now. his focus is completely on me.’

anyways love, love, and love bane & jerr

‘Love Potion’ is a short and sweet best friends to lovers story. I felt sorry for Jerryn as he was so twisted up in his feelings regarding how he felt he fell short in relationships and physical intimacy that he was blind to what everyone else around him could so easily see. Although at times in discussions with his friends I did feel that he was willfully ignorant, which did lead to some frustration with his character. Bane was truly the most patient man in the world. He loved Jerryn for over 2o years, being his friend and wondering if he could ever take the risk to cross the line into more.

I was happy Jerryn got to a point where he truly felt he had begun to wholly accept who he was without trying to change. It was just a little sad it took so much heartache for him to get there from both the horrible words of his ex-boyfriends and the self-flagellation that would follow for him not being “normal”.

The epilogue giving us an insight to what the whole gang are up to was delicious. I will always run to read a Mia Monroe book, and this series was no different. This book is much less spicy than one might be used to from Monroe (due to how Jerryn identifies) but the emotional intimacy is off the charts and the switch from friends to romance takes center stage.

I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book.

1st person, present tense, dual PoV
Bane (42/43), co-owner of Moby’s Bar and Dining
Jerryn (41/42), co-owner of Moby’s Bar and Dining

This is a series of interconnected books and while it can be read as a standalone, the characters consist of a group of six university friends returning to the small town where they met to open a queer resto bar (Moby's), and this pairing has been teased since the beginning so without starting there you will be missing some context, but nothing that would ruin the story. There are a couple of references to previously established relationships (which aren't super spoilery). In the blurb it's described as being set in the New Onyx Universe which I haven't read and didn't really feel like I was missing out on anything.

I've been waiting months to read Bane and Jerr's story. It's been obvious to everyone around them and the readers of the series that they belong together. The crux of the issue has been teased throughout the series, but it essentially boils down to them not wanting to ruin their 20-year friendship. I did find it a little absurd that they let things go one quite this long without a confounding factor, but it is what it is.

The angle each of them is approaching the issue from is slightly different and I found Jerr's exploration of his sexual identity to be a pretty compelling read. His relief at finally landing on a label that suited him, gray-ace demi, was heartwarming and his best friend's steadfast support really cemented that these two belong together.

Bane not wanting to challenge the status quo of their relationship until push comes to shove was enjoyable as well. I loved how Bane decided to make his move and begin wooing Jerr only for Jerr to be a little oblivious because wooing is pretty much their default state. "Already dating" is a favourite micro-trope of mine and honestly I wish it had been played into a little more, lol.

I loved the relationship building and the closeness these two established and once they got on the same page I loved how they made their relationship work by communicating (finally!).

We finally get Bane and Jerryn HEA, which they definitely earned.
Their love story started many years ago but got pushed into a beautiful friendship. But now Bane is willing to take that risk and give his love story another chance. His feelings for Jerryn have not changed, only gotten stronger and is unable to contain them anymore. Jerryn had secretly wished for more than just friendship with Bane, but he felt broken and unworthy of being Bane's partner.
An unexpected blast from the past sets things in motion and gives these two a good kick to get their heads out of their you know what. Jerryn started to search for answers, ways to finally understand himself. His realization that he wasn't broken or unworthy, simply wired different, made me feel all kinds of emotions. Happiness for his realization, sadness for him ever feeling that, and anger that some people had reinforced those feelings. But never Bane. Bane always saw, really saw, Jerryn and knew he was so worthy of love. He fully accepted Jerryn, and was so patient (never pushy or stepping in to "solve the problem"), letting Jerryn set the pace and space he needed.
This story is full of emotions, healing, acceptance, and true love. It beautifully portrays people's struggle to understand themselves, how emotions can be felt/processed differently, but are worthy of love, respect, and acceptance.

Enjoyable, Cute Couple❤️

I enjoyed this book even though I haven’t read the series but it can be read as a standalone and I soon picked up on the previous couples who are all part of a beautiful chosen family, all best friends and I really enjoyed all the characters.

Bane and Jerryn had been the best of friends for twenty years and for twenty long years Bane had been in love with Jerryn, so no need to mention that this is a slow burn with years of pining. The author wrote Jerryn’s representation of his sexuality, he settled on grey-ace demi rep, sympathetically and I enjoyed seeing how he and Bane navigated it.

They are an adorable couple coping together with Jerryn's journey of self discovery and understanding his sexuality, coming to accept himself as he is and understand that being himself is ok. Bane was the only one in the group who knew of Jerryn’s struggles and why all his relationships failed and he was fierce in his loyalty and letting Jerryn know he was perfect just as he was and oh wow his patience.

These men thoroughly deserved their HEA and I felt the author wrapped up the series well, with everyone happy and settled and where and with who they were meant to be.

Very enjoyable.

I wanted to love this. I really did. I love friends-to-lovers books, and this is one I'd been eager to read after reading the other books before it.

I hate when I read several books leading up to the main one I want to read only to be really disappointed when I finally get there. This could’ve been a great friends-to-lovers book. The author could’ve written about Jerryn without having him go on and on about how he’s not or ever will be good enough. I understood where the author was going, but too much is too much.

I do want to say that I seriously applaud the author for the ace and demi representation, and how she wrote Jerryn’s struggles. His being ace and demi isn’t my issue. My issue is that she turned Jerryn into a whiny and unlikable character. I’d not be a fan regardless of how he identified or his sexuality.

3 stars because it was nice seeing the other guys, and I did love Bane.

I’ve been obsessed with the Last Call series from the start, and Love Potion was the perfect cherry on top. Jerryn and his best friend gave me everything I crave in a romance—years of pining, emotionally constipated feelings, and that sweet, sweet moment when someone finally reaches a tipping point and confesses. Chef’s kiss.

I laughed, I swooned, I may have yelled “Just kiss already” more times than I care to admit. The slow build between these two was so satisfying, and the quiet intimacy between them made my heart melt. It wasn’t flashy, it was real—and that made it even better.

Also, can we talk about how this entire friend group feels like family now? I’m not okay. I need a support group for readers who don’t want to leave fictional worlds behind. This series has been such a fun, emotional, love-filled ride.

If you love pining, vulnerability, soft moments, and characters who make you want to scream in the best way—Love Potion is your book.

I cannot tell you just how happy this book makes my Grey-Ace heart. It's stories like these that help people to understand themselves better.
I've been looking forward to Bane and Jerryn's story for ages, with everyone able to see that there was something there between the best friends. Getting to know them better in the book gives more insight and it's so sweet, though my heart really went to Jerry. As someone who has gone through thinking about how broken they are, it's a really mental and emotional ride. Of course, he has the amazing love and support of Bane.
It's a wonderful low angst, slow burn romance as two best friends work through their own feelings and thoughts to find their own HEA, and make sure it works for both of them.
A wonderful end to the series and I am so happy with how things have turned out for this group. No doubt it won't be the last that we hear from them.
I received an ARC and am happily giving a review.

Sad to see the end of this amazing series, place, and group of characters, but I'm sure we'll see them again in future book cameos. Bane & Jerryn together, such a sweet story. I felt bad for Jerryn so much, just wanted to hug him & maybe shake sense into him. Bane, on the other hand, is rock steady & strong & soft & sweet & perfect for Jerr. No, I don't mean Jerryn ISN'T those things, I was just glad he got out of his own way & saw things more as they were, as opposed to viewing through the shaded, obscuring lenses of jerks or society or anyone but HIM, trying to stuff him in a box of what's normal behavior. Glad he ditched that & realizes whatever works for him (& his person) is perfectly normal & right for him/them, and anything/anyone else doesn't get a vote. Another wonderfully swoony, touching friends to lovers story from Mia. Loved the series.

I love a story about someone discovering themselves, understanding their sexuality, and finding love amongst it. And that happening for an over forty - priceless.

Jerryn and Bane are an adorable pair of BFFs who spend all their time together and are not so secretly in love with each other. But Jerryn’s concern over his sexuality has clouded their ability to truly see what could be.

This story is all about discovery and acceptance - it’s sweet and tender, and I’m here for every lovely minute of it.

It warmed my heart to finally get their story and witness their HEA.

Love Potion by Mia Monroe is filled with slow-burn devotion and emotional depth. Bane and Jerryn’s relationship spans two decades, and every moment feels like a thread being woven into a rich tapestry of love, vulnerability, and hard-earned trust. Bane’s unwavering support of Jerryn—especially as Jerryn grapples with feelings of unworthiness and his own identity—was nothing short of soul-stirring.
Their dynamic glows with sincerity and mutual care, making them an unforgettable couple. What elevates the novel further is its gentle and respectful portrayal of asexuality and demisexuality—identities that too often get overlooked in mainstream romance. Seeing these struggles acknowledged and explored with empathy gave the story weight and authenticity.

Beautiful

Love Potion is a beautiful story. Bane and Jerryn finally get together after 20 years. But their path to get there is so adorable and sensitive. Jerryn is trying to find his own path with his sexuality. For years he’s felt like he was broken. Bane always being supportive, loving, caring, and encouraging, tells him he’s just perfect the way he is and he’s not broken. Just like Jerryn, we too are perfect just how we are. I believe this is one of many things Mia Monroe was trying to express in this story and this series. She did an amazing job with everything.
Characters-100%
Theme-100%
Storyline- absolutely 100%.
I also loved the drink recipes. They’re wonderful.
This book gets a 5 star ⭐️ rating.

I was so excited to hear that Jerryn and Bane would be getting their happy ever after. They have been friends for years and Bane has been in love with Jerryn from the first time he saw him. Bane, with the encouragement of their friends, finally decided that he would pursue Jerryn to be more than friends. As Bane was the only one who knew Jerryn’s backstory of his past relationships, he made sure that he was always a soft place to land as they worked on their relationship. Loved how they just worked with communication, cuddles and love. I love this authors works and looking forward to reading more.

"I feel like a teenager again, giddy with excitement that my crush likes me back."

I've loved everything about this Last Call series and it is so sad to see it come to an end. This book was such a sweet easy read and the perfect topping on the series. Mia did an amazing job of bringing each of these guys to life and finding each their perfect partner.

I feel like we've waited forever for Jerryn and Bane's story to be told. It took them 20 years to work out that not only are they best friends but that they've always been in love with one another. This one hit me right in the feels.

Thanks Mia for an amazing ride, I can't wait to see what is in store for us next.

Sweet-cute

If you haven't read the previous books in this series then please go back and do so before reading this one.

Bane and Jerryn have been attracted to each other for years, but insecurities and other relationships have gotten in the way. Finally Bane has had enough and refuses to miss his chance with Jerryn.

These two are lovely together and once they open their eyes, to what has been there for the last twenty years, the sparks fly. Jerryn had some fears, hang ups, and self doubt, but Bane is there to accept him and love him.

This is a lovely conclusion to this amazing friend group.

"Love Potion" by Mia Monroe is book 5 in the Last Call series. This book was totally worth the wait, Jerryn and Bane are the only two in their group that do not realize they are gone for each other. Watching them work to their HEA gave me all the feels. In typical Mia Monroe fashion, the story pulled me in and I did not want to stop until I was finished, sleep is totally overrated. One of the things I love most about this series is that since the guys work and live together we get to see a lot the previous couples. I am looking forward to what is next from Mia Monroe.

This is a sweet final book in this light-hearted series. The pairing has been hinted at from the beginning and although they have been best friends for twenty years the relationship development was quite slow-burn and cautious. I liked how unhurried, supportive and communicative they were once they decided to open up about their feelings. It was nice seeing more of the Moby's crew and learning more about a character who always seemed a little separate. It feels fitting that he gets such a cozy story.

Oh My Goodness! this is amazing!

I loved this so much! We waited for them for 4 books and this book 100% delivers! I loved everything about this book, especially how sweet and tender their love for each other was. I thought Bane was sexy and amazing - I loved watching him try to break through Jerryn’s insecurities. I identified with Jerryn and his struggles so much. I loved that even though they pined through 4 books we still had to watch them pine some more here. It was sweet and powerful and I loved them so much!

Love Potion - Delicious

‘All I can do now is hope Jerryn wakes up tomorrow without regrets and is still interested in pursuing more kisses with me. Then I can woo him, get him to see I’m the one he’s been waiting for, and level up our relationship. If that happens, I’ll be the luckiest man alive.’

Finally! 💞 Jerryn and Bane reach beyond their close friendship to seek out what they need in another - Love.

Mia Monroe sweetly completes the Last Call series with one of the most romantic books I have ever read.

What a fantastic ending to this amazing series! I’ve been waiting for Bane and Jerryn’s story and it definitely didn’t disappoint! My heart went out to both these guys for different reasons. They both deserve all the happiness and love! They’re just so perfect for each other! Bane has shown such patience and understanding for what Jerr has been through with all the wrong guys. I just love how tight these two are and are best friends no matter what! A beautiful story with self learning and love! Very highly recommend! UGH all the feels. I loved reading about these two and have been looking forward to it the entire series.

The pining Bane does for Jerr is both painful and incredibly sweet. One thing I kind of wished wasn't a thing was just how oblivious Jerr was throughout the entire series. Like how do you have a conversation about being together once twenty years ago and then just never revisit it?

Other than that, this story was incredibly sweet and I highly recommend not only this book but all the books in this series.

I'm so glad that Jerryn and Bane finally received their happy ending. This was a sweet novel, full of understanding and patience from Bane and a lot of personal growth from Jerryn -- actually from both characters. I learned a great deal about the Ace spectrum from this novel (as did Jerryn!) The found family aspect of this novel is truly endearing, and I love how everyone looks out for one another. This is the happy ending that Bane and Jerryn deserved.
