At the heart of the Maricean Empire, a shadow is growing. Plague and Tyrants loom over the land with promises of greatness yet to come, while ordinary citizens face increased suffering and fear.
Amid this darkness, twelve-year-old Lavender just wants to lead a peaceful life with her mother and her best friend El. But when she's caught up in sudden havoc, she learns that her place in the world is destined to lead her along a more dangerous road. For Lavender is a witch, who can summon the power of flame to come to her aid—or to burn away her enemies. And as revolution brews in all corners of the empire, she's going to learn just how big a fire can be lit by the tiniest of sparks.
This incredible fantasy novel catches you from its first page. It is visually stimulating (through words) with incredible dialogue. The twists and turns in the story are perfect. Tension builds and at times is relieved with some much-needed humor. It’s an age-old “good versus bad” struggle told in a very new and imaginative way. It is well worth a read. It’s hard to put it down - so plan to set aside enough time to finish it in a day or two!
Witch Hunt: Birth by Fire is a captivating first novel by Katrin A. M. Klutho. It's an interesting combination of fantasy and dystopia, with a big dash of magic. The characters were portrayed with both their strengths and flaws, which made them human and relatable. The main themes were love, friendship and acceptance of the characters differences. As I was reading I found myself caring about Lavender, El and Josephine and rooting for them to succeed. They all grew and matured during their trials and adventures. This book is a wonderful read and I believe it would be great for young adults. Keep on writing Katrin and share your talents!
