There’s no cure for terror! Gotham is in the grip of a citywide panic attack, and only Batman can stop the Scarecrow’s viral fear formula from falling into enemy hands. Meanwhile, Harley Quinn makes her ACN television debut...by taking station management hostage! New friends, new foes, and old flames collide as Bruce Wayne reclaims his cape and cowl—with a vengeance!—in the epic finale of Batman ‘89: Echoes.
Sam Hamm is an American screenwriter, perhaps best known for writing the screenplay for Tim Burton's Batman and an unused screenplay for the sequel. As a result of his work, he was invited to write for the Batman comic. The result was Batman: Blind Justice, which introduced Bruce Wayne's mentor, Henri Ducard, who later appeared in Batman Begins. Hamm's other screen credits include Never Cry Wolf and Monkeybone. He also wrote unused drafts for Planet of the Apes and Watchmen adaptations.
I love Batman. I liked the first arc of Batman '89. I enjoyed the beginning of this Echoes series. One word for issue #6: Rubbish. In more detail, confused, confusing, rubbish.
I stand by my previous statements that aside from the visual aesthetics, costumes (which are incredible), and casting choices, this really doesn't feel anything like the Burtonverse Batman at all. The characters don't act the same and the storyline is a confusing mess and very hard to follow. Batman makes absolutely baffling choices. This issue specifically had a couple of cool moments involving Harley, Catwoman and Barbara but even those were a little iffy.
Overall, I'm okay with owning this run simply for the sake of being a Batman comic collector, but I doubt I'll revisit them except for a glimpse of the art.
Don't recommend, unfortunately. Watch the two films over and over, instead!
This issue likely would have been a better read if it hadn't been a year and a third late (the first issue of this monthly 6-issue series launched November 28th, 2023).
