Falling for the monster who ruined your life?
Yeah. That wasn’t on my Terrafeara survival bingo card.

I’ve survived this world by making myself untouchable—sharp edges, sharper instincts, and zero room for mistakes. Down here, power is everything. And I’ve built enough of it to stay alive.

Then Varek shows up.

Commander of the Riftborn. Rebel leader. Walking, talking weapon with horns, silver eyes… and a bond to me I never asked for.

He says he saved me.

I say he destroyed everything.

Because Varek didn’t just claim me as his fated mate—he killed my husband to do it.

Now we’re stuck in the same city, the same war, and the same impossible pull that
won’t let either of us walk away. The rifts are getting worse. The rebellion is fracturing. And something bigger is coming—something that could tear every world apart.

We should be enemies.

We might be each other’s only chance.

Because in a world built on power, blood, and broken promises… love might be the most dangerous weapon of all.

Wow - That was an unexpectedly amazing read. I love Varek so much!

We first met Pax in Kael’s book and discovered he and Varek are fated mates - though we have no idea why they are not together. I love the big silent stoic type of MC so I just adored Varek to bits. All the things Varek endured silently and kept hidden from Pax, especially at the end when Pax stood at the edge deciding if he would stay or go and the way Varek was in so much pain but still accepted that it was their end - that was just so perfect. I was in pain reading it but I think the way Pax discovered what his leaving would do to Varek was not dramatic enough (am I a drama queen or what?)

I enjoyed understanding Pax and getting to know Varek. There was delicious slow burn and so much intense emotional tension I was so lost in the book. I don’t quite agree with Pax’s reasons why he never accepted Varek but at the same time I enjoyed that it wasn’t some fated mates insta-love thing.

I’m not a patient person so Caly’s story and Dawson’s situation left hanging in the air was a little annoying (I like things all clean and loose ends tied up at the end of the story).

I’m excited for Aelith’s story next and I really hope it goes back and starts when he first gets attached to Dawson

I forgot to add - I hope there might be a story for Hendroy

This series to me is more fantasy/ action driven than romance. There is a love story , a central couple but it’s definitely not at the forefront.

It would make a great sci fi movie franchise 🍿

Before diving into Book 3: Varek, here's the arc of my reading journey so far:

Book 1: Solan
Action-packed monster romance with strong Lily Mayne Monstrous energy.

The story throws readers straight into chaos as Earth and Terrafeara collide through dimensional rifts. Jack, his nephew Jamie, and their horses are forced to navigate a dangerous new reality filled with monsters, political unrest, and survival.

At the centre is Solan, a powerful red-skinned Riftborn warrior who becomes Jack and Jamie's protector. What begins as a reluctant alliance quickly develops into a mate bond.

Book 2: Kael
Expands the world while deepening the overarching mystery.

This book builds upon everything established in Solan. The focus shifts to Sonny, a rebel living in hiding, and Kael, the prince's fiercely loyal bodyguard.

The central conflict revolves around Kael's impossible choice between duty and destiny. He discovered Sonny was his mate two years earlier but chose to remain with Prince Aelith instead of seeking him out, creating a painful emotional wound when the truth finally comes out.

Book 3

“This story includes past domestic abuse, grief, violence, trauma, and complex fated mate dynamics.”

The book begins as if we have never left.

Commander of a rebellion, Varek, shares a bond with Pax. A bond Pax tells himself he doesn’t want because of his past trauma.

Pax has ended up running half the underground escape routes in the district.

For years they had barely spoke but are now back in each other’s lives.

It’s been TEN YEARS of angst!!

Varek must go back to Dathanor as the rebellion’s plans are progressing.

“The prince’s influence, Kael’s guard connections, Solan’s combat strength… and the research team working through the books from the citadel.”

Ohhh.
So Varek and Pax’s first meeting was Pax being brutally beaten up , not for the first time, by his husband Thomas. Varek suddenly appeared and shredded Thomas to death, right in front of Pax.

“Ten years since that moment. And somehow… despite everything… my life now is better than it ever was back on Earth.”

“Because Thomas had been a very special kind of brutal piece of shit. And for the first time in my life, I haven’t been living under someone’s shadow.”

Some asshole gives up Pax and now the royal guards have him.

The Queen. Serresta. I feel this is our first time meeting her ? She interrogates Pax. She wants Varek.

Ooh … she is vicious .

“Time blurs after that.
They come back.
Leave. ‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌
Come back again.
Each visit is the same.
Blows.
Pain.
No questions.”

Varek arrives with Prince Aelith and his mate Dawson , to exchange for Pax.

Oh that’s right , the bowling alley that is now the Rebel headquarters 😂

So the trade with the Prince and his mate was strategic infiltration. Clever.

We are reunited with previous characters, Sonny and Jack.

Artisanal alcohol that’s possible biohazard 😂

It is discovered that King Ithius, Aelith’s father, is the one who made / started the rifts between worlds. But why? And is the King actually still alive?

Pax finds out that since he arrived ten years ago, it trigged a monthly heat for poor Varek that caused pain because he wasn’t errr getting any during his heat cycles with his mate.

They bond, they bone and it’s orgasms for all.

Varek has a secret though. He will literally die if his mate leaves him. But if there’s a possibility of Pax going back to earth, Varek doesn’t want to take away Pax’s choice

Aelith staggers back from the royal court, broken and without Dawson. The Queen knows that he was passing information, and that Dawson matters to him.

The Queen seized Dawson and wants to exchange him for Jamie. Jacks 12 year old nephew. I have sooo many questions.

Aelith has become unhinged.

The Queen wants to control the storms , the rithborn. Bonded pairs mean amplified power and evolved abilities.

Wait whaaaat! Hold my xxxx. (Famous Aussie beer) The Queen believes she knows who her fated mate is.

There’s a medallion. A way back home.An attack by the Queens forces . There’s so much happening.

“And there’s no doubt left. Not a single shred of it.
“That’s home,” I say quietly.‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌
And for the first time since I arrived in this world, home is staring back at me. ‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌”

I’m an emotional mess right now.

Ok I stand by Jamie and Caly are mates. 😭

King Ithius is alive.

“Below us, the city continues its restless breathing. Beyond it, the Queen waits.
The king has returned, the balance of power has begun to shift, but there is still much to be done. Much to risk. Much that could be lost.”

Coming soon

Aelith (Monsters & Mates Book 4)

OMG HOW AM I SUPPOSED TO WAIT UNTIL
OCTOBER?!

Book overview
Dawson thought getting ripped through a dimensional rift was the weirdest thing that could happen to him—until a monstrous prince started looking at him like he hung the damn stars.

Prince Aelith was born to power, duty, and a kingdom on the edge of collapse. Falling for the chaotic, sunshine-bright human he’s magically bound to was never part of the plan.

But with rebellion brewing, bonds turning dangerous, and Dawson’s very survival tied to forces no one fully understands, loving each other might destroy them both.

Strange Dialogue

I’ve really enjoyed the first two books in this series. So I’m pretty disappointed that this one was such a flop. The plot itself is nearly non existent. There’s maybe 20 pages where something of interest happens and helps to move the story ahead, but other than that it’s a lot of just boring dialogue that’s hard to read.

I was prepared for Varek’s story to be tough since the introduction we got to Pax at the end of book two was not a nice one. What I wasn’t prepared for was for his story to be so boring. Where the two should have had loads of tension and conversations explaining their time apart and why they each did what they did, there was nothing. They danced around each other for like a minute and then Pax just randomly started to give in and accept the bond. I never felt a connection between them and the lack of quality communication between them made the whole thing feel really out of the blue.

The dialogue was another huge issue. The last two books were normal but why in this book does everyone speak in stilted, single word sentences? It was so strange and even the descriptions and internal dialogue were full of short sentences that tried way too hard to say a lot with nothing.

I found this book to be a complete drag and if I wasn’t planning on reading future books (that I desperately hope are more like books one and two) I would have DNFd it very quickly.

I am feral for this world! I love it, it’s so unique in its ideas and the hot alien men are just gorgeous to imagine. The imagery is so fun to read and think about.

I love the Aussie accents and slang too!

Varek is to die for in this book! He is so patient and kind and speaks so much unconditional love! He’s so strong but yet is so soft for Pax. The longing from both of them, and the soul crushing emotion in this book is so beautifully written!

It dives into trauma from past abuse in relationships and the quiet healing that comes after it. The doubt someone has within a new relationship and dynamic. And also choosing love again. It also demonstrates that love is patient. I loved every moment of Varek and Pax in this book!

4.25 ⭐

Varek is the third book in the Monsters & Mates series, and I would strongly recommend reading the series in order since the characters and overall story build on previous books (there is an overarching plotline).

Pax and Varek's story carries a lot of history, but having that background makes their journey even more impactful. Even though they're fated mates, there is no instant-love here. Instead, the story focuses on years of hurt, distance, unresolved feelings, unanswered questions, and emotional baggage. The slow burn is wonderfully done, creating a constant sense of longing and tension that makes every interaction feel meaningful. Watching them slowly build trust and find their way to each other was quite the journey. 🥺❤️

Varek was easily my favorite. 🥰 He’s the definition of the gentle giant: stoic and strong, kind, endlessly patient, and so devoted to Pax. What I loved most was that he never pushed for more than Pax was ready to give, choosing instead to wait, support, and love him from a distance until Pax was ready. His devotion is both heartwarming and heartbreaking at times, and some of the book's most emotional moments come from seeing just how much he quietly carries on his own. 💔
Pax, on the other hand... While I loved getting a deeper understanding of him, and his perspective adds important depth to the story, especially as it explores the lasting effects of trauma and past abuse, he also frustrated me at times. And while Pax's actions weren't always easy to agree with, his struggles felt understandable and realistic given his past. So the story is very much about healing, learning to feel safe again, and finding the courage to choose love despite past pain.

Alongside the romance, the worldbuilding continues to expand. I love this very unique world with its interesting and imaginative alien culture, great found-family, and humour. I really love coming back to it! 🥰

I shed more than a few tears reading this book, so it is safe to say it was an emotional journey. If you're a fan of slow-burn romances, second chances, and gentle, devoted characters, this one is definitely worth picking up.

Also Caly and Jamie 🥺💔 I really hope we get their story!

I received a copy of this book from Gay Romance Reviews, and this is my unbiased review.

Varek & Pax

"...they move with this horrible elegance that makes you understand exactly why so many species here fear them."

"...your existence changes the shape of mine. Permanently."

I will admit that it took me a moment or two to find my footing to get back into the story, because it's been long enough since I read Kael, that I couldn't immediately remember 100% of the details. But it only took me a couple of chapters to find my way again. This book is not a standalone and needs to be read in the order it's intended, otherwise there will be too much important background missing for context.

I was surprised at how sweet the inner monologue of Varek was. In the previous books, he seemed very serious and hard to read. While much of that was still true for this book, it was fun to see how his emotions bounced around and evolved as he kept himself in Pax's peripheral. And Pax's determination to not feel something for Varek was hilarious and entertaining. His protests never ended, but he grew closer and closer with Varek no matter how hard he tried to stay away or push him away. I know the fated bonds are difficult to predict and prepare for, and the others we've seen so far had different and difficult journey's too, but I swear these two were meant for the emotional upheaval we get in this story. When combined with the other pieces of the story, I have to say that this has been my favorite of the Monsters & Mates series, so far.

Varek was an emotionally powerful read, and I'm really interested to see where the story goes next, because it's just getting more and more intense as the series develops.

** "You've had your arm broken, been beaten for four days, and you're still healing. I'd say standing up and trying to interrogate people about interdimensional conspiracies is a pretty full schedule." 😂🥰

I received an authorized copy of this book and am volunteering my honest review.

i received an ARC from the author via GRR & this review only contains my honest thoughts and feelings about this book.💐

the book started with the main characters, varek and pax, knowing each other already.
it was under the 'prior reading is recommended but not essential' category but i felt like i missed a lot by not reading the previous books and having no context as to who the characters were! i think it should have been 'prior reading NEEDED'. i would have liked to know how and when they met and get ALL the context and the details, what we got was too brief and only one sided!

saying all that, i loved this book!!
i think it's my new favourite fantasy series! i should definitely catch up with the previous books ASAP and i can't wait for the next ones to come!!
i especially want to read jamie & caly's story👀 (when jamie is older of course)

plot wise AND character wise, i loved everything AND everyone, i didn't get bored for one moment (which unfortunately happens often).
i don't want to spoil it for anyone who might read it BUT i will say this: i love the infiltration trope and human males should be more like varek!
who doesn't love horns and SUPER gentle & fluffy giants with the inability to lie and the patience of a saint AND impossible tolerance to pain??😭

lastly, i don't say this often and i do hope i won't start saying it more, but KILL THE QUEEN.

becca seymour is a new to me author (even though i do have some of her other work in my TBR) and i'm so glad to report this book did not disappoint. i can't wait to read more from her!🖤

This is the third book in the Monsters & Mates series, and while the romance can be enjoyed on its own, I recommend reading the series in order to fully appreciate the characters and ongoing story. Pax and Varek's love story completely captured my heart. After ten years apart, carrying the weight of grief, guilt, and unanswered questions, these two find their way back to each other in the most beautiful way. The connection between them is undeniable from the start, but what made their romance so special was the patience and care Varek showed Pax every step of the way.
Varek never pushes, never demands. Instead, he waits, supports, and loves Pax from a distance until Pax is ready to take that next step. The longing between them was exquisite, and every scene they shared was filled with emotion, tension, and tenderness. Watching trust slowly grow into love made the slow burn incredibly rewarding. I adored how important they became to each other—not just as fated mates, but as two people choosing one another despite the pain of their past. Their romance was heartfelt, swoony, and deeply emotional. Combined with the found-family dynamics, danger, humor, and plenty of steam, this was a story that left me smiling long after I finished.
If you love second-chance romances filled with yearning, devotion, and a hero who would do anything for the person he loves, Pax and Varek's story is one you won't want to miss.

Pax has survived Terrafeara by staying untouchable — until Varek, the Riftborn commander who killed his husband, returns and claims they’re fated mates. Forced together in a collapsing world, they’re pulled toward each other even as war, worsening rifts, and old wounds threaten to tear everything apart. They should be enemies, but they might be each other’s only chance — and love may be the most dangerous force they face.

What stood out most was the care and patience Varek gave Pax, giving him all the space he needed to adjust to the mate bond even when Pax’s stubbornness dragged out the pain far longer than it had to. Their dynamic was fascinating, especially because Pax is such a strange mix of kindness, sharp intelligence, thoughtlessness, and tunnel vision, all wrapped into one complicated man. The story delivered plenty of danger and drama, not just from the Queen and her army but also from tensions simmering within the rebel forces. That layered conflict made the world feel unstable in all the right ways. A gripping, emotional read where two very different men navigate power, trauma, and a bond neither expected and somehow make it work. This was an MM story with mature content.

While this series does focus on a different couple in each book, it is designed to build upon the previous stories and needs to be read in order. There's a particular scene that won't have nearly the impact that it should if you just drop straight into this one. I will say that I do sometimes wish I read these closer together. There are some details and characters that I didn't quite remember when I picked this one up. I really enjoyed this one, especially after Pax returns to the site of the rebellion. It was great to see him interacting with some of the other characters we met previously. Varek is a saint with out patient he is when it comes to Pax. Pax has quite a bit of personal trauma and has definitely developed habits that may have served a purpose in the past, but don't help him in allowing to accept the bond that's in place. We really get to see him struggle with this and I loved it when he finally decided to fully trust and accept Varek. Varek is amazing and has a lot of weight on his shoulders.

The spice in this one is fairly low but I do think that the connection is there. This one does end with a WTF moment and it's not quite a cliffhanger but I definitely want to read what's up next! I really love this series and think these two are a great addition!

Third in series (Monsters & Mates), best if read in order. Paranormal/sci-fi. Fated mates. Second chance. Hurt/comfort. Found family. Slow burn. Mostly single POV/Some dual POV.

After ten years apart Varek is back in Pax’s life, the missing mate that had killed Pax’s husband right after Pax had been stranded in a brutal foreign world. Now Varek is the leader of a rebellion and Pax has been surviving helping people escape to the rebels but still keeping his distance from Varek, which doesn’t seem as important as it did before.

Can patience and self-sacrifice be any more swoony than the way Varek treats Pax? Every moment Pax and Varek are on page together there is so much tension, as Varek respects Pax’s choices and allows Pax to come to him when he is ready, regardless of the bond between them. I really enjoyed this story, the building of something between Pax and Varek, the secondary characters that are important pieces in the overall plotline, and how emotionally important Pax and Varek become to each other. There is danger, steam, friendships, humor, and love and I am seriously invested in this world and the fated mates as they strive for their HEA’s. 4.5 rounded up

I really loved this book so much. I will advise even though it's not recommended, to please start with book one things are interconnected, and I feel you should read if you want the full story of all parties involved. This is book 3 in the Monsters & Mates Series.
In this book we finally get Varek and Pax story. I do love how the back story was given to help explain some of the reactions pax has.
I will say Varek I love so much, he reminds me of huge gentle giant teddy bear. He is just so strong and tough but with pax he is so sweet and soft and very gentle.
I will say there is no Insta Love which I liked to see and the slow burn was just right.
I will say even though I didn't always agree with the way Pax reacted or did thing i did feel for hist struggle to struggle with everything he went through.
Overall, this was a great book I have read the complete series and absolutely love it. I did love how this one ended when Pax mad Varek promise to never loose what they had together and Varek said i will never allow it. This is a top tier series I'm honored to have found and read.

Despite the length of this book, I read through this action-packed story in one sitting, unable to put it down. The plot and characters are intense, the world building is detailed and the writing is good. The only reason it lost a star is for some sections in the book that felt repetitive or drawn out. I liked the slow burn romance between Pax and Varek, as well as the eventual steam. Pax spent 10 years avoiding the bond, but once he succumbed, he did it fully. Varek was very careful to make sure that Pax made his own choices every step of the way, refusing to influence those choices with any information that might have swayed them. I found the MCs and the rebels in Dathanor to be very likable and I enjoyed a lot of the humour.
The Queen is really terrifying and coldly calculating. Just a warning, I found the torture scenes very difficult to read; you may feel the need to gloss over that section of the story if it's tough for you too. There are a couple of good twists in the story. I'm very much looking forward to the next book, as I'm dying to read about Aelith and Dawson.

I've been loving this series and the world Becca is creating. In this third book we learn a lot about such world, and I am hooked, it's intriguing, original and interesting. Regarding Varek and Pax story, I was curions and looking forward to it, as we met them in Kael, and we know they are fated mates but are not together. Both Varek and Pax are fascinating characters, they have so much guilt and doubts, I was happy to read them resolving their issues and getting into their relationship. However, for my taste, the love story between Varek and Pax is too slow burn, and we don't have enough of them really together. And while the story is "angstier" than the previous ones, I needed a few chapters to get into the story. I think I would have enjoyed it better if I had reread Kael just before as a lot of things from that book are mentioned but I had forgotten them ;-)

This is the third book of the Monsters & Mates study and while technically it could be read as a standalone I do not recommend it.

I got an ARC and this is my honest review.

Pax has survived living on Terrafeara through instincts and hard work. He has a partial bond with Varek after he saved his life, killing Pax’s husband in the process. He had no intention of falling in love with Varek. The rifts are worse and the power struggle is worse. To make matters even more strenuous, there is nothing the enemies won’t consider in their efforts to get what they want. These two will need each other to survive.

Varek is amazing in so many ways. He appears to be controlled but he has his tells. He can be very blunt and expresses things in a way that makes you smile. While their bond is there, Varek does not force Pax to complete that bond. Pax is not sure what he wants. He lost his husband and is not sure what his next step should be. This is an amazing series, populated with some unique individuals. It is a world where humans are the aliens. I could not help but fall in love with Varek and Pax. Try this one and see if you fall in love as well.

✨ 8/10 ✨

Becca Seymour does it again. This is my second MM Romance of hers and I was not disappointed.

A rift takes away Pax from Earth to a different dystopian planet where an evil Queen uses humans as slaves. He becomes a freedom fighter but along the way meets this other general, a purple alien, who is also against the queen and apparently, his mate.

The plot is verywepo written. Despite it being a third book in the series, it can be read as a standalone. I was able to pick up the themes very quickly. I liked the lead as well as the side characters - they are well planned, with back stories, humanizing them.
What I would have liked more is scenes between Pax and Varek - more of them bonding and being together.

But definitely go for it if you like MM, Alien dystopian romance with a slow burn.

I literally screamed NO at the book at the climax scene - I was that immersed into it 😂

Thank you @authorbeccaseymour and @hottreepublishing for this copy!

This book definitely moved the overall plot along quite a bit, but the relationship between Pax and Varek didn't feel like it had enough attention?

I did really like Varek and Pax together, but they spend so long apart, or Pax denying their bond, that it felt like their actual relationship was squeezed in around the rest of the plot. I did like how they felt each others emotions but couldn't read each others thoughts or communicate telepathically!

Jamie's role was so sad!! I need to know more asap because I need a story for Caly and I'm keeping everything crossed that these two are mates....

I also really liked that Pax is originally from Coventry - that's literally down the road from me!

Looking forward to Aelith and seeing more of the plot unfold after the events at the end of this one...

Surprising. Now I’m actually at a loss for words, because I’m still completely taken aback by the story and its emotional depth. I knew a lot would happen plot-wise, but I didn’t expect the emotions.
That’s why I read. Okay, not THE reason, but one of the top five. These two characters pulled me in so deeply that I felt dizzy, and time and again I really had to fight back tears.

We always assume that when we find the one who’s meant for us, everything will be simple. I love this story because it showed me that things can sometimes be more complex, and that the price of knowing, experiencing, and loving the one who’s meant for you can be high.
But it also remains gripping because this world rarely lets you catch your breath. My heart recoils from the brutality every now and then, but it is also reconciled again.
A heartfelt reading recommendation for those who know what it means to recoil and how hard it is to “unlearn” that.

Review for (Monsters & Mates-3) Varek by Becca Seymour

How can anyone think of falling for a monster that ruined their life? Well, read this book, and you will find out. Pax has gone through a lot but has survived and made his life what it is now. I loved the way this author explained this world they live in. I felt Becca Seymour wrote this world so well; I felt like I was in this world along with the characters. I have to say, till around a year ago, I hadn't read many monster stories, but I have to say I have become addicted to them as I read more and more of them. The way the world is written is just so fantastic. I felt so much for Pax and what he went through, but he needed Varek in his life to help him see his life wasn't over and that he could let him in. This is one of the books that I didn't want to end. I wanted this story to go on much longer. I need more stories in this world for sure.

Book 3 in the Monsters and Mates series can be read as a standalone, though now I do wish I would have read the series in order because I'm hooked and going back for the first 2 books.

This world is so captivating and interesting. Monsters and humans are fated mates, I mean tell me more. The characters are complex and layered. It was easy to get into the story. The overarching plot and romance were balanced well together.

Pax and Varek had so much delicious tension. I enjoyed that just because they were fated mates, their relationship wasn't automatically a given. There was a slow-burn gradual development that, to me, felt so satisfying with all the yearning.

Tropes:
Paranormal/Sci-fi
Monster + Human
Forced proximity
Knotting
Second chance
Fated mates

This is book three in the author’s Monsters and Mates series and features the human and alien monster pairing, Pax and Varek.

I so wasn’t expecting this one! The thought that our MCs were separated for ten years when they’d already forged the first two bonds broke my heart; I wanted ‘em to be together right away without all of the drama! I DID love their HEA when it came but I would’ve preferred it without the long separation. (I know, I know, I’m a lightweight and I know it but that’s okay, it takes all kinds of us😄.)

If you’re looking for a romance with a mated pair and don’t mind that that particular pair is a human and an alien monster and mind even less that their love was delayed for a decade, this book might be for you… they do need to be read in order, however, but it’s no hardship as it’s a really cool concept so check ‘em out! 4.25 stars

Becca Seymour has created such a rich atmosphere in this series. Everything is so vibrant and clear in my mind. Varek and Pax in the last book had me thinking this one was going to be full of angst, but honestly, if I had to describe it in any way, it’s about selfless and gentle love. Pax’s last relationship was abusive and the number one thing Varek does is whatever Pax tells him to do. For ten whole years he stays away from his mate, and when things change he lets Pax set the pace. It’s so beautiful.

The ending was jam packed with plot points and I’m dying to see what happens next. Especially with Aelith and Dawson who seem like polar opposites but hopelessly devoted to one another. This is truly such an excellent series.

Thank you GRR for the ARC. This review is honest and voluntary.

This is my favorite series of Becca's. I love it so much. The world building is incredible and the characters are so well-shaped and complex.

This story finds us back with Pax and Varek, who have been circling each other for 10 years since Pax was pulled from Australia and dumped into this alien world. Varek and Pax have known that they were fated mates the entire time, but Pax was not ready to be that for Varek yet.

After we found out that they were mates but not together at the end of the last book, I was DYING to know their story!

It was a much more complicated and nuanced story than I was prepared for. Poor Pax! Poor Varek! I am so glad that they were able to heal together.

Now, we are left with so many questions. Aelith's mate Dawson is with the queen. Jamie and Caly. The KING! I need to know! Like right now! haha :)

4.5/5 stars 🌟

It’s such a great book ! It’s a story about being in a healthy relationship after surviving a really toxic one. The importance of choice and consent is central. Varek and Pax are soulmates, and it was interesting to see them getting closer with time because at first, Pax is still reluctant to be more. I haven’t read a monster romance before, and let me tell you, the spice was hot ! Definitely reading one again in the future. Overall, the writing was amazing and the story beside the romance really enjoyable.

I just recommend to read the first books of this series before reading this one. I did not, and I regretted it a little. It felt like I missed out on the first ten years of their story.

The description drew me in. I have not been reading this series but I will go back and read the previous books after having had the chance to get into this one. This was crazy. The situation was crazy for Pax who finds himself mated to a being that he would not have chosen and because of how they got connected Pax does what he can to resist the pull. But the overarching situation, the danger all around them causes Pax to re-evaluate and to realize that maybe the pull between them is right. Varek was a decent fellow. He gives Pax room as they work their way to where they need to be. The times they find themselves are precarious and it is interesting following along as even that does not keep love from finding its way. I am now looking forward to going back and then for the next book in the series to see how things progress.

We're three books into Becca Seymour's Monsters & Mates series. And life on Terrafeara hasn't gotten any more comprehensible. I'm still in the "Say what..." phase. But that's how I felt while reading the Fangs & Felons books. So, I'm just going to put it down to writing style. Or that these aliens from alt-Earth are just so......alien.
That being said, I enjoyed "Varek". Varek is the strong, stoic, silent type. Pax does keep him angsty, gnawing on the scenery. Lots of slow burning heat. Pax wasn't exactly cruel. Just like Varek wasn't exactly a doormat. And that near awful, almost ending? Lots of emotion there.
The worldbuilding was good. Odd, a bit quirky. After reading the first couple of chapters a few times, I was able to keep up with the plot. And definitely want more.

Loved being back in this world 🥰

The world building is so well done that I felt immersed in it completely. Every nuance, every action, every emotion and for every moment I was made to feel that I was there. Varek and Pax didn’t have an easy road to their HEA, it was ten years in the making. Pax’s previous relationship was abusive and controlling so Varek always ensures that Pax has complete control of his choices, even if that is to Varek’s detriment. This story is about healing, a quiet tender love that blooms over time and two souls that are destined to be together. The backdrop to their romance is a villainous Queen still misbehaving and doing villainous things, a plot twist or two and hints of what’s still to come. This series is so well done and I can’t wait for more.

Varek is the third book in the Monsters and Mates series. It can be read as a standalone novel, which is what I did, and I had no trouble at all.

Due to an anomaly that occurs during storms, rifts open up that transport people from one dimension to another. And, coincidentally, they find their destined mate there.

This book tells the story of Pax, an Australian who is sucked into one of these rifts along with his husband. By a twist of fate, his husband dies, and Pax meets his destined mate, Varek, but they spend 10 years apart.

All of this takes place against the backdrop of a rebellion against the Queen of the planet and dimension to which he has been transported. I loved it so much that I’m going to read the first two books.

I received this ARC from GRR for free in exchange for my honest review.

This world is new to me and so is this author. I’m going to have to go back and start at the beginning of this series because the world-building is what really sucked me in.

Varek and Pax, our couple, are fated mates but they’ve been apart for 10 years. That’s because Pax needed the space and as you’ll find when you read, Varek always wants to give Pax what he needs. Even when Pax fights him which is often. Their love story was one of healing and working through past trauma while making the conscience choice to love.

This book is well written with excellent pacing. 5 stars from the wonderful world building, the exciting plot that moves along nicely, and the romance that’s like a warm hug.

This is the third book in the series and I think it's the most 'angsty' read so far. It was definitely an emotional rollercoaster and, because Pax was so resistant to accepting the mate bonds, they spent a lot of the book separate, hence the angst. I liked both of them as individuals but they were stronger together and the little bit of chemistry we did see was smoking hot! Varek's chapters were brilliant and I only wish there had been a little bit more from him. I enjoyed the continuation of the world building - Caly and Jamie had me near tears so I hope there's more to come there. I'm looking forward to Aelith's book next and I'm excited to see where the plot moves to after the revelations towards the very end.

I received an ARC and this is my honest review.
