Amethysts & Alchemy #2

Fire Opals & Family

Rate this book
My name is Delaney small-town pharmacist, certified pilot, and first-known genetic inheritor of supernatural pica. Hand-in-hoof with my emotional support pig, I travel the world tasting every mineral I can get my hands on, alchemizing their special essences into “parascientific” potions. Until recently, life was lonely but simple…

And then along came Heath Spencer, Disrupter of Solitude and Disseminator of Chaos.

Thanks to our recent discovery of ancient Hunnic treasure, we now find ourselves racing across Hungary to find Attila the Hun’s legendary golden tomb before a swarm of rival archaeologists gets there first. To make things exponentially worse, one of those rival archeologists happens to be Heath’s brilliant and beautiful ex-girlfriend, Julie.

Suddenly, being the first to find Attila’s long-lost tomb is no longer a matter of pride; it’s a matter of proving my worth. Because if Julie finds it before I do, I’m convinced Heath will realize he made the wrong choice. With so much at stake, I’ve got no other option but to rely on my parascientific powers more than ever before, taking risks that threaten far more than mere bodily safety.

It’s funny; I used to hate wet socks more than anything. Now – between danger, heartbreak, and glamourous tomb-raiding exes – I can confidently say wet socks are the least of my problems.
*I rarely say this for a sequel, but I loved this better than the first book! (How is that possible?!) Perhaps it’s because I went in already being familiar with Delaney, and her emotional support pig, Topie. Or, perhaps, it’s simply that Rachel knows how to write such magical words! I say the latter! -Goodreads review,⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

They're baaaaccccccccck! This time better than ever! This second installment in this series is even better than the first book (and believe me the first book is pretty amazing as well)! Every single word is with purpose and takes the reader through a checklist of emotions along the way. I live for books like this. -Goodreads review,⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

This book… it was wonderful. Rachel Rener has once again created a story that grabs you and drags you in (willingly, of course)! It’s truly a breath of fresh air in a trope-filled genre. This one stands out. Read it, you won’t be disappointed! -Goodreads review,⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Thanks Rachel, you're on a very short list of authors that has yearning slow burn down to a science (LOL OBVIOUSLY) that has me desperate for more. Also the last page of the book...BRILLIANT! -Goodreads review,⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Wow!! What a sequel! I absolutely loved this continuation of Delaney and Topie’s story!! The growth of the characters was impressive, the way Delaney and Heath grow together is heartwarming. A must read!! -Goodreads review,⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

I couldn’t put the book down! It was equal parts funny, had me on the edge and had me swooning. Heath is a total green flag of a man. -Goodreads review,⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Fire Opals and Family was a fantastic continuation of Amethyst and Alchemy. It was a fun and great adventure getting back into the world of Heath, Delaney, and Topie. Delaney goes across the country to meet up with Heath to join him in a competition to find Atilla the Huns golden tomb. Lots of archeologists, including Heaths ex-girlfriend Julie. Delaney questions herself and his feelings for her. You're in for a treat. This book is just as good as the first! Topie snacking his way through! Highly recommend reading!

ARC received from Rachel Rener in exchange for honest review.

After the events of Amethysts and Alchemy, Delaney Stone has found herself in a situationship with Heath. Are they a couple? Are they not? Delaney doesn't know, but she's finding being around him very *ahem* titillating. Whilst on a trip to Bolivia with Topie (Heath is in England on a different mission), Delaney discovers a new mineral, which of course, she tastes (Delaney has PICA, and has discovered a taste of a rock or mineral allows her to ascertain it's parascientific properties.) Unusually, she is unable to determine what the property of this one is. A call from Heath sees her divert from Bolivia to Hungary, with the purpose of finding Attila the Hun's tomb. Whilst there, she meets new people, including Heath's ex, and her jealousy causes her to base her hypothesis on an assumption - leaving her following behaviour skewed. What danger lays in wait for Delaney as a result?

I absolutely loved Delaney's character in Amethysts and Alchemy, and she absolutely doesn't disappoint in Fire Opals and Family. Her neurodivergence is so well written. Rachel Rener has taken the main issue of the PICA and made it the main plot point, but has also incorporated other aspects of difference - the unbearable feeling of certain clothing, the inability to understand sarcasm, a lack of understanding of her own emotions as some examples - which leave you in no doubt that Delaney is different. But at no point does she feel less than. She is fiercely intelligent, dreams big, is funny, and whilst she doesn't realise it yet, is capable of love. And despite her initial assumption that she must always be right, she will acknowledge that she's not infallible - more so in this second book of the series. Heath is having a good effect on her!

Delaney's relationship with Heath in this instalment feels very brittle to her, when in reality it's a lot stronger than Delaney understands. She is desperately jealous of Heath's ex, Julie, when she meets her, but is overwhelmed by the realisation that actually, she quite likes her. She is very much in camp "why would someone like him want someone like me when she's around?", and her scientific thought process means she's constantly looking for evidence as to why. This need for evidence leads her to making the absolutely terrible assumption that Heath wants her as the very best version of herself she could be - when in reality, he cares for her just as she is. This flawed thinking sees Delaney make some critical mistakes in trying to make Heath see what she thinks he wants to see, leading to a third act incident that will leave you stunned as you turn the pages. On Heath's part, he also experiences some jealousy when a geologist on Julie's team shows a keen interest in Delaney - who of course, is unable to read that and just thinks he's a nice guy. He is desperate for Delaney to see that she is everything to him as she is - and hopefully the trauma they go through in this book will go a long way to doing just that.

Topie, the emotional support pig, remains a scene stealer, with his favourite films on his tablet, his emotional support pig stuffie, his little boots (and the trotters he wipes on the mat), and his "Ree!" responses (reee-sponses? ba doom boom tssssh) to questions fired his way. He is absolutely adorable, farts overlooked, and he even wins over Delaney's mum, which I didn't see coming.

I loved the ending of this novel. It served so many purposes - showing Delaney she's not infallible, that she needs to take other people's feelings into account at times too, that events from her past aren't guaranteed to repeat again in the future, and that she doesn't have to feel less than others just because she is wired to think differently - she can be cherished for exactly who she is. And I think that is so important for neurodivergent people to read.

Fire Opals and Family is an excellent Romantasy novel that has the USP of a neurodivergent FMC, the USP of a magical (sorry Delaney, I mean parascientific) ability, the USP of an animal sidekick, lots of adventure and an MMC who would do anything for the girl of his dreams. I am so excited to see more of our favourite throuple in the next book, Hematites and History, and I will totally (im)patiently wait for that to arrive!

Thank you for giving me the opportunity to review this book!

This book is so amazing! It’s got it all, romance, mystery, excitement and a pig sidekick. In this book we’re back with Delaney and Heath (and of course Topie ❤️) as they search for the legendary golden tomb of Attila the Hun. There’s plenty of cave diving and excavation sites that at some points made me feel super claustrophobic. Delaney goes through a lot of feelings when confronted with heaths ex girlfriend. She battles how to understand her feelings and heaths towards her. It made me feel so sad for Delaney and want to go through the pages to give her a big hug that she would definitely hate. This book is so funny and witty, you may also need a dictionary because some of those words definitely got me 😅. Rachel has done it again with the amazing sequel!!!

Thrilling and Endearing!

Oh, we have waited for this book, and oh my, how we have been rewarded.
Rachel truly shines through in this masterpiece. Her craft has exponentially grown over the years and this just proves it.
Delaney, Heath and our beloved Topie all return in a smashing and superb sequel. The hunt for a long lost tomb and treasure, the joy of new love, and the absolute adoration that Topie has for Heath is just the tip of the iceberg.
Rachel writes about the emotional journey th take, together in their relationship, and separately, as they deal with their own issues and insecurities. The thing is though, it is super relatable to the average reader and will tug t your own heartstrings.
I personally, lost my dad right as the ARC came out, and honestly? Some of the emotional things I struggled with were helped with this book. It put into words, feelings that I couldn't, or didn't want to let out at the time. However, I desperately needed to, and not only was the story wondrous and thrilling, it connected with me on a deep, personal level.
I will never spoil a book, because the joy of experiencing it should be your own, but I will say, be ready for a roller-coaster of a ride. From South America, to Europe and close to Asia, to back home in the States, it is an action packed non-stop thrilling ride.
The best things are finding out about cool and rare minerals, as the nerd in me rejoices at learning any new knowledge.
So people, do yourself a favor. Grab this, immediately. Read at your own pace and enjoy the heck out of it. I know I did.

Rachel does it again with a fun vivid world of mystery and romance. Along with another great animal sidekick Topie. I definitely recommend reading the continuation of what happens in the world of Heath. Now I just need a Topie plushie to go with my Biscuit one.

*Please note, I was provided with an ARC version of this book by the author and am voluntarily leaving an honest review*

Delaney's adventures continue, only this time she really is channelling Lara Croft! Or is is Indiana Jones? This second book in the series might have the classic 'middle instalment' issue of no firm beginning or ending, but this deals with it in Empire Strikes Back levels of greatness, giving us a fab story, excellent character development, a good dose of humour and spice that... well, you'll see 😉

Delaney's character is made even more interesting in this follow up to 'Amethysts and Alchemy', as she comes across as something of a bundle of contradictions. Somehow she manages to feel right at home while being uncomfortable in a completely alien environment to her; she tries to 'logic' her way out of situations while being seemingly more driven by emotion, and while it's clear her past traumas have had a destinct effect on her, ultimately she seems more forgiving than I would have expected. It's definitely not a bad thing; it made her feel more complex as a character, even while the story around her continued at lightening fast pace.

But it's Delaney's confronting of her own vulnerabilities which really makes this story. Yes, she deals with things in her own neurospicy way, but all the way through you can viscerally feel the assault on her senses and her struggle to grasp what comes naturally to others. The illustrations of her thought processes were amazing, particularly when it comes to her relationship with Heath and the worries she has that she's not "normal" enough for him, and goodness did I relate to some of her thought spirals! I desperately need more characters like Delaney in my life!

As a history nerd, I love the underlying plot of the book. However, I could have done with so much more of it! It feels like we barely scratch the surface before we're off again, and IMO there was scope for so much more depth once the characters were in position. A slower pace would have given rise to so many more opportunities, in terms of secondary character development, that good slow burn romantic tension, discoveries of note and a steady build up to lead us into the next book. That's not to say I didn't enjoy the fact that this book was incredibly easy to read!

I'll add my voice to the cacophony of yelling that there is one particular scene in this book though that had my eyes popping. Damn, when the spice hits, it hits goooooood! And you might just find yourself tempted to steal some of her moves... 😉 I mean, if I had myself a Heath, I wouldn't be holding back either if it meant I got to keep him!

And I think that's what came across most for me; because of the writing, the POV and the acceptance of Delaney's thought processes, even you as a reader constantly feel that same niggling doubt that Heath will actually stay. I mean, I trust the author enough to hope that she wouldn't emotionally detroy her readers like that, and it seems clear to me that he and Delaney are end game, but nonetheless it's written so well that you really do get to experience being inside Delaney's head.

I'm already psyched for book three!

Good

A fabulous follow up to Delaney and Topie’s adventures in Amethysts & Alchemy, this time the two of them (after a short trip to South America) head off to Hungary with Heath. There they hope to find the tomb of Attila the Hun, while Delaney strives not to be intimidated by Heath’s old girlfriend who is an archaeologist working there!
Between her mineral experiments, and the desire to prove herself, it’s not long before Delaney finds her way into a little trouble…

Another fantastically original book in this series, Fire Opals and Family sees Delaney and Heath getting closer, as they both try to reorientate themselves with their new relationship status.
Topie provides us with some amusing observations of the porcine kind, while Delaney’s literal brain provides a few moments of hilarity too.
It’s a fantasy story, just this side of cosy, with an adorable sidekick, and intellectually stimulating main characters.
It’s an entertaining read that is sure to resonate with those who are a little neurospicy themselves, while the premise is a fun one to explore, especially if you like modern fantasy adventure tales.
I thoroughly enjoyed this second book in the series, and I am looking forward to seeing where Delaney, Heath and Topie head next.

As usual, Rachel Rener has created a world that sucks you in and refuses to let you go, filled with complex, lovable characters (even if I want to shake one or two of them sometimes— I’m looking at you Delaney Stone!) and a richly woven tapestry of plot and personality.

I sincerely enjoyed watching Delaney grow even more, building on her growth in the last book, and that growth was so beautifully tied into the wider adventure.

Of course I have to mention Topie, the spectacularly flatulent emotional support pig! His cute, quirky appearances definitely enhance the story, and I absolutely adore every time his name pops up.

Overall, it was such an amazing adventure to immerse myself in, very reminiscent of Indiana Jones or Tomb Raider. Maybe a dash of Evie from the Mummy. The underlying current of a neurospicy character learning how to navigate new relationships and finding her own self worth is a sweet counterpoint to the excitement of exploration and discovery. (Also I have to say the footnotes were a delightful addition that carried Delaney’s personality through hilariously at times). It was a hard book to finish, not because it was hard to read, but because I didn’t want it to end.

Book 20 of the year is an ARC of the sequel of one of my favorite books of 2024. I normally devour books by the queen, Rachel Rener, but I decide to savor this one like our FMC, Delaney, savors gems and minerals. (And yes I know I'm cutting this close since it comes out tomorrow... The ADHD has been ADHDing)

Delaney Stone is a neurospicy BADASS with magic... I'm sorry... With parascientific abilities. Her Pica is her superpower... Literally. She also flies her own plane, rock climbs, scubas, and owns her own pharmacy where she uses her superpower knowledge to create tonics for people that work way better than modern medicine. Oh not to mention she found a lost Hun treasure. And has a hot archeologist obsessed with her and has an adorable emotional support pig.

I am so excited we got to return to Delaney, Heath, and Topie for another adventure.

Thank you Rachel Rener for this ARC and I can't wait for the hard copy to add to my shelf.

Delaney and Heath, accompanied by her faithful piggy sidekick, Topie, meet up in Hungary to search for Attila the Hun’s tomb. A new-to-her mineral has her putting her life in danger as she feels the pull of something deep inside a cave toward a mysterious tomb. One fall and concussion later, Delaney finds herself in a hospital back in the states with Heath, Topie, and much to her dismay, her parents at her side with her body flushed of all heavy metals and minerals. She is forced to spend 24 hrs in her childhood home under concussion watch with her parents divulging all the typical embarrassing adolescent photos/stories to Heath. During this time, Delaney and Heath’s relationship grows, the found tomb is likely a fake and their adventures can continue.

Omg, I love Delaney. I’m not neurodivergent (that I’m aware of anyway) but I find her so relatable. She’s been burned by men in the past so she has a hard time believing that a wonderful guy can be into her and feeling like she has to be something she isn’t to keep him interested. Heath is definitely in the top 5 of my all time favorite book boyfriends! He loves Delaney for who she is, quirks and all. And this book has one of the BEST spicy scenes ever written! I love the rest of the plot in this book, combining history into their adventures and how it contributes to the story line. I absolutely cannot wait for book 3 to see where the adventure takes them!

Delaney and Topie's adventures continue in Fire Opals and Family. Discovering the magical properties of new minerals and traveling the globe looking for treasure with Heath, the greenest of green flag book boyfriends. 😍

After their stunning discoveries in a mine in China, Delaney and Heath are kind of celebrities in the mineralogy and archeology worlds respectively (much to Delaney's horror, because being perceived is the WORST). So their next step? Go to Hungary and search for the lost tomb of Atilla the Hun, of course.

And Li is back! He is the biggest cheerleader for the Delaney/Heath relationship, though his relationship advice has a tendency to baffle Delaney, who takes his turns of phrase far too literally.

Heath continues to be peak book boyfriend material. I seriously highlighted soooo many Heath quotes. ❤️ And we (and Heath) finally get to meet Delaney's parents in this book.

Thank you Rachel Rener for the opportunity to advance read!

I was so excited to ARC read this book, and let me tell you, I don’t know HOW she does it!
This book had everything I loved about the first in the series, and everything I DREAMED it could have! More Topie? CHECK! More Heath? Check! More Spice? Check! The way this author blends facts and magic is SEAMLESS! This book is also special because I’ve always collected rocks, and find tremendous joy in the discovery. All while appealing to my inner nuerospicy self. (Including feeling absolutely SEEN during awkward and sometimes jealous encounters.) As if I wasn’t already obsessed enough!
This is a must read if you’ve ever collected a rock, or had any neurodivergent ways. You will feel absolutely seen and appreciated here!

This second installment picks up right after Amethysts & Alchemy with all the same banter, wit, romance and adventure! I knew I was going to love the continuation of Delaney's story as she embarks into new territory with Heath.

Now that she doesn't hate Heath, her every encounter with him only adds to her infatuation and desire - unlike anything she has ever felt before. And of course this wouldn't be their story without the adventure of treasure hunting and mineral collecting with the star of the show - Topie, the emotional support pig who snacks his way through the entire epic tale!

Seriously, if you have not picked up any of Rachel's books yet - I highly recommend starting with Amethysts & Alchemy! This series is by far my favorite by her. 💚

How is it that every book I read by Rachel becomes my new favorite thing? I loved Delaney's solo (plus pig) adventure turned meeting up with Heath to fun archaeological adventure with (hopefully) new friends. I wasn't sure what the "family" aspect was going to be and I absolutely loved it. The last few chapters made me cry.

To top it all off, lots of personal growth for Delaney, and promises of more adventures. I can't wait!

Delaney and her emotional support pig Topie (aka Topaz) are back! Their sweet friendship is the emotional backbone for their latest adventure to Hungary in search of a lost tomb and treasure.

With her neurodiverse insecurities, Laney is angst-ridden to learn her love interest Heath’s ex-girlfriend is joining the archaeological hunt. Laney’s mutterings conjured by (false) ideas amidst Topie’s snorts, sniffles and farts adds to the hilarity.

The sequel is as good as the first book and shows the depths Laney will go to for love and family. I can hardly wait for the next installment!

ARC in exchange for an honest review: I can not express how much I loved this book. It had everything I could want: action, adventure, history, geology, humor, love, affection, ND FMC, Emotional Support Pig, and travel to exciting places. Oh, and don't forget the footnotes. They are hilarious!! I laughed, I cried, I sobbed, my heart hurt and expanded, and I fell in love with these characters all over again. It is beautifully written, with so many quotable parts. I want a friend like Delaney and Topie, I want to marry Heath (honestly, he reminds me of my husband) lol. I love all of Rachel’s writing, but this one may just be my favorite. I sat on the last chapter for days, because I didnt want it to end. I have notes for quotes, notes for things I want to look up, and notes for things to paint and draw. I want to reread it. I am so excited for the next book in the series. This book made me feel so seen, loved, and accepted. Holy relatable. <3

🌶️ 1.5/5 Spice

STOP if you haven't read the first book in this series, Amethysts & Alchemy, I highly recommend doing so before reading this book. The first one was amazing, this one is phenomenal! This is a Romantasy due to its magical realism element but it's also an action-adventure, tomb raiding fun time! My only complaint is literally that Laney's books/adventures are too short!

I absolutely love Delaney with my whole heart, and I cannot wait for more adventures with her, Topie and Heath!!!! Laney is a neurodivergent 'pharmacist'. She uses minerals and rocks to make special tonics for herself and others. A lot of this is explained in book 1. I have never had the voice in my head captured so well before. She struggles with social cues, conversations and masking among other neurodivergent struggles. I feel like I am Laney!

We follow our heroine and her sidekicks on an adventure around the world searching for Atilla the Hun's lost tomb. Our characters change, grow and learn how to be a couple together. We also get to meet Laney's family in this one! It's so neat to see where she came from! I hope we get to learn more! This book kind of feels like if Indian Jones was a girl, neurospicy and eats rocks LOL! Could also be like Lara Croft, and Evie from The Mummy too.

Heath is such a good man and green flag. He is aware of how Laney struggles and truly sees her.
If you're on the fence just pick it up and give it a try! Especially if you love Rachel's other books!

This is what I've been waiting for since I got my hands on the Alpha Reader Copy if Amethysts and Alchemy. I've read Laney, you are my spirit animal. Because Heath was right when he said you are a turtle in a hard shell but without the shell you are squishy. And we see the vulnerable side of you do much in this book. The side that has to prove herself over and over again to everyone but this time, to Heath. Because they are hunting down Atilla the Hun's Tomb. With Heath's gorgeous ex-girlfriend who Laney thinks is so much better than she is. So she must find the tomb first so they can win the grant money.

I love Rachel's writing. Having read the first book, I knew I was in for a blast with the sequel. Topie is my favorite support animal ever. I really wish I could get one now. I love the characters, the science, the romance, the angst. I especially love learning all about the minerals and where they can be found. I want to explore the locations. It was all so good. Topie is still the best emotional support animal to ever exist.

Heath is relationship goals for life. He’s so caring and understanding. I can’t say he’s perfect, but no partner is. I adore the way he is with Laney.

Laney struggles with new emotions in this story. I love how her brain works. How her thoughts process and how she goes about working on her hypothesis.

It was fun to see some of my favorite characters return and meet new characters. I hope to see more of Julie in future books. She has the potential be an amazing friend.

I do wish the adventure had a better … conclusion I guess but I am excited to see where it all goes.

Rachel, and therefore her characters Delaney and Heath, are much, much smarter than me. And it was made very apparent in this book 🤣 Topie, the 35 lb pig, led me to research if pig varietals are actually that size. I guess Rachel’s books will encourage me to continue learning so I can keep up with the depth of knowledge of her main characters.

However, my own inferiority complex aside, I really enjoyed seeing Delaney trying to figure out what she and Heath were to each other, and dealing with emotions in her logical way.

This book flew by (did I mention Delaney is a pilot), passing through multiple countries and introducing more stones and their parascientific properties. What a treasure hunt. I just can’t believe it ended the way it did *glares at Rachel*

Amethysts and Alchemy, book one, is for those who don’t feel seen or appreciated as they are. Fire Opals and Family, book two, is for those who still feel like they have something to prove to the world.

I don't even know where to begin. This book was such an adorable and sometimes nail-biting chapter in the Heath, Delaney, and Topie adventure. From the opening scene with Delaney's flying skills to the cliffhanger at the end... and all of the REEEEs and Laneys and character development in between. I am torn on the parents. I won't post spoilers. I will just say I understand both sides. I also love all of the research that goes into Rachel's books. I know she's already a smart cookie and it's probably minimal work she has to do to fine tune the details, but the history and mineral knowledge... it all reads so beautifully and flows with the storyline. Another homerun ma'am. Can't wait for the next one. ❤️

This book was amazing! The footnotes were hilarious 😂, the banter was perfect, Delaney's naivety was on point and Topaz steals the show once again! As far as sequels go, Fire Opals & Family did not disappoint. It built on Amethyst & Alchemy beautifully. It's not redundant or repetitive. Rachel does callbacks and reminders like no other author I have ever read before! She gently reminds reader's of things we may have forgotten if you chose not to do a re-read before the release. The new characters perfectly add to our faves. I personally have some new love-hate relationships. She gives us just enough of them to peak our interest but not enough to feel like they've overshadowed the purpose of this book. Which, ***** SPOILER ***** is not what you think it is. I love the little extras at the end and cannot wait for the third book!

Amazing story! I love Laney and Heath and especially Topie even more. My heart was there for Laney as she grappled with her feeling for Heath and her self doubt in her value to him. I also didn't like Julie when she entered the picture but she is not a bad person. I yelled FINALLY, YES! At a certain chapter that I won't spoil but it's HOT!
Loved seeing Laney with her parents and hope we get to see them again in book 3 along with Heath's parents.
I enjoyed all the historical knowledge about Atilla the Hun and crystal/mineral knowledge. Also the photos at the end of Laney and Topie were great! Again, I need a Topie so bad!
Recommend this series so much!! Go read it.

**ARC Reader, all opinions are my own!**

Delaney is a woman of many talents, but before we get into it, there’s one thing you MUST know. It’s “Delaney,” not “Laney” (barf). Not “D” (what?!). None of them! HER NAME IS DELANEY!!

Now then, now that we’ve gotten the necessities out of the way, Delaney is a woman of many talents. None of which involves interpersonal relations. She’s a certified pilot, she’s a licensed pharmacologist, she’s a rock and mineral aficionado, she's a pig tamer (though Topaz didn’t really need taming; he’s just the sweetest little oinker!), and she's a purveyor of potions. …waitaminit… potions? I thought she was a pharmacologist! She is! AND she has a deep and growing understanding of the various metaphysical and pseudoscientific properties of various minerals and how they can be used to benefit society. You know, no big deal. It’s just alchemy at its most fundamental. So what if it takes a tasting to really get a good idea of what each mineral can do? Once confirmed on herself (she’s her own primary test subject), she can create potions and tinctures, draughts and dribbles that’ll get ya right as rain! Of course, these are proprietary “naturopathic” tonics, not snake oil!

Just don’t make her talk to anyone. Kaythanxbye!!!

Inevitably, Heath, her heartthrob and world-renowned archeological anthropologist (who slings rocks on the side), will have her encountering new social situations… but with new minerals to find, sample, and catalogue, Delaney’s going to be ok. Now, where in Hungary can you get something WITHOUT paprika?

Amethysts and Alchemy is the first book in Rachel Rener (of Inked and Lightning Conjuror fame)’s newest series, and lemme tell you what! It’s SO much fun! The protagonist is neurospicy, and not just to belittle someone, but because that’s just who she is! She has pica (yup, eats rocks, has her whole life). Her emotional support porker, Topaz (Topie rocks!), is an actual character in the book, not just a comic relief, and the science-meets-magic of it all is just fantastic. I highly recommend this book, and its audio (also excellent) for the discerning romantasy/urban fantasy lover to enjoy! 10/10.

Delaney and Topie are back! Delaney is in Bolivia gathering a new form of halite in the Salt Flats when she decides to meet up with Heath in Hungary (taking a commercial flight instead of flying her own plane after a small miscalculation). When she arrives, she finds out that due to their discovery of treasure on the previous book, there now hundreds of archeologists all trying to find the burial site of Atilla the Hun first and claim their share of a prize. And it just so happens that Julie, Heath's ex, is one of the archeologists there. Now Delaney feels the need to push herself to prove she is worthy. But when she takes things a little too far, there are some dangerous consequences.
Delaney is the same quirky character we fell in love with in Alchemists and Alchemy. Despite being around Heath, she still doesn't pick up on normal cues and struggles to understand some of the things we take for granted, like body language. She struggles with finding out she can be jealous and she also struggles with her parents and that relationship. That was definitely an interesting dynamic to read and when you add in Heath it got a little humorous. Delaney learns a lot about herself and her family in this book and it was a lot sweeter than I was expecting! The real star of the book though is Topie! He can melt even the iciest of hearts! I can hear his adorable little "Ree" noise in my head!
Once again, we get amazing world building, esp in relation to all the amazing minerals and gems Delaney has or finds. It is written by someone who definitely knows all about the way these gems look (and taste?!). There are some tense moments that leave you wondering what did Delaney get herself into and how will she get out as well. You really feel her panic at not only her perilous situation, but when she has to deal with her family as well. The outcome I was expecting did not happen, but this book definitely left it open to another book and if that happens I would be very happy!

Well, Rachel's done it again. Every time I think she has written the BEST book ever, she just goes and tops it! In this second installment of the A&A series, there is absolutely no hint of "bad sequel syndrome". Everything is amazing from start to finish. Delaney and Heath develop their...companionship...while racing to try to find the legendary tomb of Atilla the Hun. Unfortunately, everyone and their brother seems to be searching for the same. When an old flame of Heath's comes into the picture, Delaney buckles down and prepares to do whatever it takes to prove to him that she is the better choice for a partner...even if that means risking her very life.

My favorite thing about this series, aside from the rock-nerd inside me screaming with glee at the geology facts and the history nerd in me squealing about the archaeological goodness, is that Rachel is able to add spice to the book without it overwhelming the story, and to do it in a way where everything is 100% natural, consensual, and the characters take it so slow with each other. They are so cautious and caring with each other's bodies and souls, and out of the multiple spice scenes, there is only one where they go "all the way" together. I love how the story highlights that the relationship is more about their love and respect for each other's minds and intelligence and strength of character than about anything physical (though they obviously love that too).

And of course, you can't have Delaney without her adorable ESP (Emotional Support Pig), Topie. He is there, in his full, gassy glory, stomping in his boots and swimming in his snorkle, making every scene just a little bit better simply by existing. 🥰

A note of appreciation for the audio version: the narrator is AMAZING!!!! She captures the essence of Delaney so well, but is also able to branch out to all the other characters - whether male, female, or porcine - and bring them all to life seemingly effortlessly!

Another great addition to the A&A series! You can tell that Rachel thoroughly did so much research to make sure this book was the most accurate in can be in every way - from foreign languages and translations, down to minerals and where to find them - honestly you'll probably come out of reading this just a little bit smarter haha
As far as the story goes, Delaney is so unique in that she's a neurodivergent character. It's so refreshing getting to read the POV of someone so relatable, and unafraid to be herself. (Even if that also comes with the anxiety and unease of the way her mind works - which can be a little stressful to read, but it sure is realistic). Now, Topie. Oh, Topie. What a wonderful lil sidekick, and still one of the best parts of this series. As an animal lover myself, this pig companion just really makes this book *Chef's kiss*.
The romance? Heath? AMAZING. It's so rare these days to see realistic and organic relationships - not to mention a very healthy one. They communicate, they reassure each other, they support each other, and this guy is just one of the best male characters I've read in a long time. The romance in this just feels like a warm, cozy, safe hug. So worth it.
Plus the adventure, the twists and turns, getting to go on this ride - I couldn't put the book down, literally, I read it in one (long) sitting.
So Rachel absolutely killed it again, and I can't wait for the next one!
