A criminally insane convict. A haunted house. A shockingly twisted truth. Hillcrest House is where Annabelle Montague was killed, on New Year’s Eve, thirty years ago. Convicted of murder, her husband, Sir Edward Montague, has spent the last thirty years of his life in a high security unit for the criminally insane. Now, as part of an experimental treatment pathway, he has returned to Hillcrest House. Much like his rapidly deteriorating mind, the house is a derelict and wasted version of its former grand self. Inside the dimly lit corridors, lurking amidst the shadows and the dusty, empty rooms is the truth – and Annabelle. Under the supervision of two clinical professionals, one desperate for money, the other for recognition, the experiment begins. As it does, the unsettling rumours surrounding Sir Edward and Hillcrest House begin to surface. Is Sir Edward more dangerous and disturbed than anyone had realised, or is there something more sinister creeping about in the darkness at Hillcrest House? A story told from three points of view and over the course of two days, a twisted truth begins to unravel. Everyone has something to hide. Especially Annabelle.
Who killed Annabelle? That is the main question that this story poses. An old man with dementia and other mental health issues, a hero/villain, and nurses that are the witness to it all... That is what you are presented within this tale of horror.
I have read many of this author's books, and this one was by far my favorite yet. It was scary and had me intrigued and glued to the pages. The descriptions in this story were written so well that I could visualize and be placed in the story as it played in my head. I loved it.
The characters were real and down to earth, mostly, and easy to follow. The story line was so spooky at times I got chills. Another great story by a continually improving author.
I was immediately intrigued by the premise of this book and though it was short, it was a wild ride. I loved the different POVs and how it allowed us to see everything through each person’s eyes. So ominous & mysterious, and I totally didn’t see it ending the way it did. A great little thriller!
I have now read all three of Emma-Nicoles available books. Each one was a riveting read. This young author has talent! Suspenseful to the end...I did have a glimmer along the way, but this read had me on the edge of my seat the whole way!
I absolutely love this author, her books are incredible to read. This book was definitely very creepy and I just couldn’t stop reading it, I read it in two days. Scary, creepy and one of the best books I’ve read of hers. I hunger for many more books! I don’t want the experience to end. The two main characters were great,, and the plot had a lot of very anxious moments. The end was a surprise and I loved it.
This was a creepy and atmospheric read. I enjoyed the pace and the symbolism of the house , the ring, the key, and the final meal. Also the 'experiment' on a dementia patient was cruel and unusual in and of itself. If you like a creepy house read with Gothic undertones and the unexpected, this is a great little read.
Its not often that as I read, I am left with, 'what is going on?!' I can usually figure out the plot. But this one, wow, twisted. I didn't get it till the end! I think this is the third book from this author I have read. I'll be reading more of her stories for sure!
30 years ago, on New Year’s Eve, Annabelle Montague was murdered in her home, Hillcrest House, by her husband, Sir Edward, Who was then convicted and sentenced to prison in a maximum security unit for the criminally insane.
Now in the present day, returned to the scene of the crime by his Doctor, for experimental treatment, Sir Edward’s care whilst staying back at Hillcrest is overseen by Suzi and Jake, two clinical professionals.
The story is told by the three temporary inhabitants of Hillcrest house, a tale of murder, love, ghosts, black magic, and more..
The characters are well-defined, particularly the insane, Sir Edward.
Though this is my first book by this author it’s very easy to see that she has a deft touch in writing the macabre.
A dark, suspenseful, gothic and atmospheric story, the writing is excellent, the frights are described well, whilst the bringing together of the 3 voices telling their story is accomplished with aplomb, as the story ends with an extremely enjoyable yet evil end.
Supernatural twists and scares executed brilliantly , ‘Three’ is a tense, intriguing, haunting, brooding, chilling tale, a classic piece of storytelling.
After reading Emma-Nicole Lewis first novel, The Wishing House, I couldn’t wait to read more from this author, unfortunately, it was a bit of a wait, but certainly well worth it. Three is a gothic dark novel, that contains supernatural chills, Heart Thumping moments, and suspense to keep you wanting more. It was a great second novel and I am so happy to say that I have purchased a new kindle edition of Emma-Nicole’s third gothic novel A Shadow Beyond which is a time slip novel which I adore. Fans of Barbara Erskine, Susanna Kearsley, Pamela Hartshorne by Emma-Nicole Lewis.
This is the third book of Emma-nicole Lewis and I was looking forward to reading having enjoyed reading the previous two books. What can I say. I thought that it was a little long winded usually I can't put a book down but was a little disappointed in this one.
