Rate this book
** BOOK #1 IN AN EPIC FANTASY ROMANCE SERIES **

Perfect for fans of A Throne of Glass and The Witcher, WHEN FEATHERS FALL is an epic romantic fantasy with friends to allies to lovers to enemies, Chosen One with a twist, slow-burn increasing spice, found family, and a sprawling world of magic and demons.

In a realm where power is inherited and destiny is predetermined, Princess Sorrena Faelan stands as the formidable heir to one of the most influential thrones. At thirty, her path seems unwavering—until she enters the Obsidian Keep for the Anama Trials. Within its shadowed halls, Sorrena confronts a labyrinth of treachery, forbidden desires, and dark secrets that challenge everything she believed about her lineage and herself.

Amidst the trials, Sorrena

Ravka Macmara: A disgraced Stormblade warrior from Varnokh, whose enigmatic past and uncertain loyalties make her an unpredictable ally—or a potential betrayer.

Rhydian Eonan: Her estranged childhood friend, whose intentions blur the line between rekindled affection and concealed motives.

Fenn Lockridge: The universally adored charmer who harbors an inexplicable animosity towards Sorrena, igniting a tension neither can ignore.

Drayce Valtair: Bound by an arranged marriage devoid of warmth, yet as their paths intertwine, surprising passions threaten to surface.

Guided by a mother as cold as the crown she wears and haunted by Maeron, a relentless trainer whose methods are cruel and twisted, Sorrena must navigate a world where the line between friend and foe is perilously thin. As a brewing rebellion threatens to engulf the kingdom, she faces trials that demand not only strength but the courage to redefine her destiny.

When Feathers Fall is the first installment in a gripping five-book series, weaving themes of grief, power, romance, and the subversion of traditional tropes into a dark, gothic epic fantasy.

Oh boy, do I love a good unreliable narrator, and Princess Sorrena delivers in spades! She's giving us major ice queen vibes on the surface, but N.M. Peterson drops these delicious little breadcrumbs throughout that hint there's SO much more bubbling underneath. Watching Sorrena navigate the Anama Trials while pretending she's made of stone and just staying alive with a target on her back. The character development potential here is off the charts, and I'm already invested in seeing this woman's walls come crashing down.

Fair warning though—this book takes its sweet time setting everything up, and I mean everything. Peterson is building a whole dang world here, complete with magic systems, political drama, and enough romantic tension to power a small city. If you're the type who needs instant gratification, this might test your patience. But if you're like me and love getting completely lost in rich, detailed fantasy worlds where the payoff feels absolutely earned? Buckle up, because this five-book series is going to be one heck of a ride!

*** POTENTIAL SPOILERS PROCEED AT YOUR OWN RISK ***

Omg. I finished it in two solid sit downs. SOLID 4 🌟!

Things I LOVED
🖤Ravka!!!
🖤The magic system - albeit a bit short lived in this book, ya just know things are gonna KABOOM in the next one(s).
🖤Ravens… I freakin’ love corvids.
🖤 Demons and dark entities.
🖤 Spooky vibes
🖤 Glossary, pronunciation guide, houses and their signal, attributes etc., and MAP - what fantasy person doesn’t get excited about a map…
🖤 Chapters have names - I’m SURE this was done on purpose, but I didn’t pay attention enough to catch a pattern, I just enjoyed the titles.
🖤 HEAVILY plot driven
🖤 Characters were relatively well developed
🖤 Echoplane and the visions and how they are tied together.
🖤 The twist!!! I knew that no good for nothing was BAD. 😉
🖤 The potential for 3…. THREE love interests?!

Things I’m picky about
🙈I wish there was more world building. I love a map… but I also love when regions are described in detail, however, there wasn’t much exploring of regions - so I can understand not having too much.
🙈 Sometimes - Sorrena was just so insufferable with the “i never made this choice” “i never had someone helping me” etc. meanwhile she has an inside cook/matron figure in the trials, she forms alliances immediately - and she is not as self sufficient as she thinks - BUT this is a me thing. She was much less insufferable than Violet for example from Fourth Wing (no hate!)
🙈 I get that things happened fast, but sometimes the plot and the trials seemed a bit rushed. Yeah they went from trials to straight up culling (hence the hunger games connection) but I wanted to be more in the moment with the characters.

Spice 🫑 : Two on page “scenes” with other times of provocative talk and suggestive themes, but I’m sure it will heat up.
Characters 4.5/5 ⭐️
Plot 3.75/5 ⭐️

Duet narration review- 5⭐️
Both narrators absolutely killed bringing this story to life. They covered so many voices without any slips, you can feel the emotion in their words, and they made this story I already love even more lovable.

I honestly don’t understand why this hasn’t blown up yet. The story is very well done, plot is engaging and well-paced, character growth and likability, witty side characters, thrilling love interests (3, there are THREE), and a relatable FMC. All characters are over 30 and emotionally mature, the spirit bonds have great personalities.

OG REVIEW- 5⭐️
“To those who’ve been gaslit by cowards, crushed by would-be kings, or caged by fear: You are not alone. You are not broken. You are not done. Fuck the tyrants. Light the match.”

This fucking dedication. YES. When I say I absolutely devoured every single word of this astonishing masterpiece, I am not lying. No skim reading here. And you might want to write down or highlight every chapter heading. Because the author may or may not have done something with those… but anyways.

This story.
These characters.
Chokehold.

The MC’s are in their 30’s. Hallelujah. A fantasy series with grown ass adult characters.

The fun in this is that I have no earthly clue where it’s going. I am itching for book two and book one hasn’t even released into the wild yet.

The banter is bantering. I fucking love Ravka as a side character and would 100% read a book about her.
•”I’m getting a stiff drink, and then a stiff man. Coming, hooker sauce?”

There’s a prophesy hinted at throughout, so my brain is working overtime trying to guess. I love that!
•”They will find, and they will fall, drawn together by fire, undone by shadow. And the stars will weep for what the earth has written: two souls entwined, forever lost to the blade.”

There are deadly trials where the Unbound battle to find their spirit bond and connect.
•”It’s not a Trial anymore,” she said. “It’s a culling.”

There is a soul bond, but they’re fated to die at each other’s blades in every lifetime.
•”When it comes,” he said, backing into the shadows, “you’ll choose them. You always do.”
“Them?”
“Your blood. Your crown. Your path.”
I took a step toward him, not realizing I’d moved. “And what will you choose?”
“You,” he said quietly. “Gods, Sor. I’ll always choose you. Even if it kills me.”

There is reincarnation, but memories are swiped and they have to find each other again every time.
•And in all my lives, he’d looked at me like this. Like I was the answer he wasn’t supposed to find. Like I was the sun in a cold prison. Like I was his salvation, and his doom, wrapped up in a body that he was dying to touch.
“Say it,” he whispered. “Say that you’re mine, and I’ll bring the world to its knees for you.”

There is a forced marriage, and oh man is he protective and delicious.
•”Sorrena Faelan,” he said softly, “I swear on my bond that you will not lose your freedom, your power, or your autonomy. You will rule at my side as an equal, and I will offer you respect and loyalty until I breathe my very last breath.”

You know how sometimes-yes, even in fantasy-you feel that emotional connection to a character? Sorrena Faelan is that character for me. She struggles to make friends because history has shown her that everyone only wants to use her. Including her mother, the Queen. So much of her story resonated with me.
•For as long as I could remember, my focus had been so solid and strong, my path laid out clear before me. Learn to fight, learn to lead, learn to persuade, learn to endure. Then the Trials. Then marriage and children. And then I would rule Thornwythe, my spirit bond at my side. Simple. But since the day I set foot in the Keep, my path had turned and twisted and warped into something I didn’t recognize anymore. What I wanted, what I truly wanted, had changed into something nearly unrecognizable too. The truth. Revenge. Yes, but now there were other layers, other needs aching to be filled. Loyalty. Friendship. Love. Fuck, even justice for everyone that had been kept down, the Order’s boot on their neck for lifetimes.

This story is a true work of art. It’s not spicy yet, but I can feel it coming for us in book two.

Thank you, Nicole, for sending me this ARC of your masterpiece to enjoy and leave an honest review.

This is an ARC review.

Do I regret reading this as an ARC? yes
Is it because I didn't enjoy it? Absolutely the opposite.

I have had to wait 2 days to write this review. Reading the last words, realising that Book 1 was over, the realisation dawned on me that Book 2 was the only thing that would soothe the devastation I felt at that moment and then sending me further into despair as I was reminded that Book 1 only comes out officially next week.

I loved this book from the first chapter. Even before that, the pronunciation guide already had me curious (and grateful)

The way you feel you have jumped straight into the shoes of the FMC but then slowly unfolding parts of her, her world, her companions. Layer by layer, each character comes into view, like they start as a 2D version and with every page slowly forming a 3D version, the words on the pages as their filament.

Dark and lovely all at once. You can smell the spice in the air though there has not yet really been a chance to taste it.

I really did love reading this book and I don't regret supporting it becoming a success as an ARC reader.

The way I hung on every word ❤️‍🔥 I rarely just sit down and slow read a book, but I didn’t want to miss a thing in this one. It’s not the same story that keeps getting told, making it unpredictable which I loved. I enjoyed being a part of the FMCs journey and challenges, friendships and romance. The mysterious MMCs who I immediately knew I would fall for, even though I didn’t know them yet 😅 You get danger and suspense, political intrigue, banter and tension, and a unique magic system. The way the spirit bonds act as magical familiars is magnificent. There is a lot of mystery and a lot to figure out which I LOVE in a book.

❤️‍🔥 Deadly Trials

This gives me the squad rivals and found family feels of Fourth Wing with a deep and dynamic plot with unique magic system in a world that feels like Romantasy meets dystopian.

Title: When Feathers Fall: Chains of Orenda (Book 1)
Author: N.M. Peterson
Genre: Dark Fantasy
Pages: 437

Rating: 5⭐️/5

“You’re nothing but shattered thing, crawling through the pieces, pretending you can still be whole.”

Sorrena Faelan was born to lead—heir to Orenda’s strongest bloodline, trained from childhood to fight, rule, and endure. Now, she’s finally stepping into the Anama Trials, the sacred rite meant to unlock her true power. But for Sorrena, the Trials are more than tradition—they’re her only chance to uncover the truth about her brother’s death, long buried under court lies and a cold, calculating Queen for a mother. Returning to Obsidian Keep, once her childhood haven and now a place of secrets, she forms unexpected alliances and rekindles a charged connection with Rhydian—the boy who once knew her best and now leads a rebellion. With danger closing in and a political marriage looming, Sorrena must decide: follow the future chosen for her—or burn it down and forge her own.

WHEN FEATHERS FALL (Book 1 of 5) — thirty, powerful, and finally stepping into the Trials that could change everything — she’s got way more on her plate than just unlocking magic. Sorrena’s thrown into tight spots left and right. I’m so here for the slow-burn chemistry between her and Rhydian — tension-filled, forbidden, and fated in the most delicious way! But she sees other options, and it makes everything feel more real (and low-key, I loved that! No need to lock it down yet — we’ve got four more books to figure it all out). Also, can we talk about Ravka? Total scene-stealer. Fierce, loyal, hilarious — oh, I need more of her! There’s found family, magic, trials, rebellion, and some serious emotional weight — grief, vengeance, identity — all wrapped in beautiful writing. And THAT cliffhanger? Ugh. Book 2 can’t come soon enough! Plus, the author’s dedication? It’s a full-on mic drop. Say less. I’m all in.

A big thanks to N.M. Peterson for providing me with a digital ARC of this book!

Releasing 06/26/25 on Amazon, KU and paperback.

I have received this as an ARC and I will provide my honest opinion in return!

When I read the tropes and the description, I found it to be similar to Fourth wing (cold mother in a high position of power, dead brother, being bound to a spirit and wielding magic from the bond), but, honestly, it is not just another version of the same story.

Summary: Sorrena is the heir to her Queendom. She must go through a series of trials to bind herself to her spirit and get her powers in order to take over as queen. She also wants to use this time at the Keep to find the truth about her brother’s death. During the trials, she makes nee friends and reconnects with an old one. When the trials are over, her mother arranges her marriage to the heir of another powerful kingdom. But things are not what they seem. Sorrena has been kept in the dark for too long and now she’s understanding that the stakes and forces at play are greater than she thought.

I really enjoyed this story. First, the FMC is 30! So that’s a nice change. There are trials, an arranged marriage, magic, a brooding love interest and lots of action.

The main reason why I didn’t give it a 5 ⭐️ is that I think the world the author is building is fairly complex and in the first half of the book I found it a bit less clear. I didn’t not quite understand why the swamp trial was so dangerous and what was the actual goal of it (just to stay alive I think). I didn’t understand why so many people around the FMC seemed to have such hatred towards her. However, I would say that this doesn’t prevent from following the story and enjoying it.

I thought it was very surprising. I like to make predictions and it never went where I thought it would.

I can’t wait for number 2!!

ARC given in exchange for an honest opinion.

Fantasy, trials, previous lives, bonding with spirits and a mean brother who takes pleasure in hurting the FMC, obviously.

The story has potential because it has a solid world building, an interesting magic system and some gruesome trials. And did I mention a former childhood friend who drifted apart only to reappear at the trials? And with whom there is longing? And tension? And there are visions of his from a former life when steamy-er things happened?

That's all good. What is better is the found family because FMC's read family sucks. Big time. So there's also that. And a husband at the end (we know she'll get one from the beginning, I didn't spoil it) but the character sure is unexpected. As is his behavior.

As I said, it has a lot of potential because I enjoyed all of the above. What I didn't enjoy was the fact that it seemed like too many things were going on. There's the sucky family that tortures the poor girl, the trials that are strenuous, a brother that died in shady circumstances, the rebels she meets at the trials, the former whatever, the spirit bond, the husband, other demons, secrets and it all seems too much. I think because all of it is happening at the same time and the answers that we get are sparse.

I feel as confused as I was when I began reading the book which makes me wonder that did I gain by reading the entire book when the majority of this will be answered in the sequel (hopefully).

Anyway, this will be available on the 26th of June so grab a copy and tell me your opinion. Thank you :)

When Feathers Fall by N. M. Peterson (ARC) review.

This is a solid 4+ ⭐️ for me. This is the first book in a planned 5 book romantic fantasy series. The writing is excellent and the world building is strong although I hope there is more of that to come as we’ve only scratched the surface here. This is a building book and the story as established thus far promises a lot more down the line.

The main characters have to go through a series of deadly trials and challenges to bond with their spirit who will guide and protect them as well as help them hone and use their magic. But this year something is very off during the trials.

Our FMC is 30, which is refreshing, but she’s still kind of naive though that’s really not her fault as she’s been sheltered and groomed into exactly what the cruel people in her life have made her. She experiences growth and for probably the first time in her life makes friends both male and female who see and experience the world very differently from her. She has also attracted some very dangerous enemies.

Power struggles, arranged marriage, past lives, looming war, an unsolved murder, interesting magic and an old friend who could possibly become more all clash here.

I still don’t really understand the regional magics and while there was so much going on I feel like everything is being pulled in a number of possible directions that have me very interested in the next books in the series.

Recommend checking it out! 📚

The beginning of an epic tale -
While an avid reader of all different genres of romance, I hadn't ventured TOO deep into romantasy as of yet, but when I saw the teaser and that the author was looking for ARC readers on threads, I was intrigued - that being said, Book One hasn't even been released yet and I'm already anxiously awaiting Book Two!
This foundation for what promises to be an epic, five Book journey gives us so much and yet has just enough teases that keep you turning page after page. Sorenna, the FMC, has the weight of the world on her shoulders - a cold, overbearing ruler for a mother expecting Sorenna to come thru the trials unscathed and with no complaint; a sociopathic, obsessive step-brother hellbent on ruining her chances a success at every turn; a beloved brother who's murder she secretly seeks to avenge. Despite Sorenna's strengths, she finds herself at disadvantages constantly and manages to get thru the Trials with the help of a rag-tag group of misfits who help her survive and find who she's truly meant to be - or at least steer her in the direction she needs to go in to get there.
When Feathers Fall has it all - battles, intrigue, found family, eternal soul mates and heartache, arranged marriage, badass women warriors, and more. I wholly recommend this book and can't wait for the next installment, because that cliffhanger...omg!

This was a fantastic kickstart to this series and I look forward to reading the rest of the installments. This is not your typical fantasy romance and is one focused on a powerful badass MFC in a world ruled by women and worshipped by men. I appreciate the set up for world building as there are a lot of aspects in here. The details are important, including the chapter titles which lead to something fun (take notes). I appreciate that the characters are older in age 30’s. The trails are a wild series of events set up to kill the weak and forge the strong. Sorrena surviving the trials and watching her character make small changes while her personality evolves because we know there’s so much more to her than meets the eye keeps you wanting to know more about her. There’s magic, surviving terrible men/abuse, bravery, revenge, violence, secrets, spirit worlds and more. I enjoyed the magic/spirit bonding to an animal spirit which added another layer to the characters personalities and their stories. The spirit realms, demons, evil spirit bonds, and overall magic kept me curious and intrigued. I’m rooting for Sorrena and impressed by her ability to uphold her choices, survive, and say to hell with everyone who’s ever wronged her or abused her. Brisgail is a cool spirit bond with powerful magic and I look forward to more of what she is capable of while bonded with Sorrena.

“Gods, Sor. I’ll always choose you. Even if it kills me.” 🫠😍

When I started this ARC, I told myself that I was gonna do a better job when it came to using the highlighter tool and taking notes… That was a lie; and it wouldn’t be the only lie that I told myself that night. When Feathers Fall captivated my attention so well that I was completely oblivious to my surroundings. Just when I thought I would be able to reach a stopping point or was telling myself “one more chapter“ another twist happened and before I knew it, it was 3:00 on a Friday morning, I hadn’t even had dinner and had to leave for work in 4 hours.

I love that Sorrena was written to be a little unpredictable, quick witted, and untrusting of others. She carries a lot of burden on herself, which is the eldest daughter I can relate to. She may be quick tempered, but she doesn’t always show it, but lucky for us- we get to see her thoughts; which had me chuckling because I agreed with her. We have a few MMC‘s that I’m hoping we get to learn more about in the second book but so far I have to say my favorite is Rhydian. 😍 He’s broody and mysterious, and overall the silent type and I love a broody MMC. From the beginning, I didn’t like or trust Maeron; I think he’s a little suspicious and an overall bad, poisonous apple.

I see an opening for possibly three love interests but I could be wrong since I didn’t see that final twist coming. I truly loved this book but now I have a longer wait for the next book. N. M. Peterson did a phenomenal job and I can’t wait to see what comes next.

Holy moly! This book was so beautifully written! The level of attention to detail to each character and to each characters backstory made it easy to follow along. Sorrena’s character is such a badass. The funny banter between characters and the drama in each chapter kept me engaged. And omgggg that cliff hanger!!! We need book 2!!! I need to know what happens to Sorrena and the prophecy!!!

Favorite quote: “This is Sorrena,” she said, loud enough to rise above the noise of the tavern. “She’s got a stick up her ass, but she’s working on it.” I nearly spat out my drink. “That’s how you introduce me?” 😂

PS: I think Ravka needs her own book lol

I was gifted an ARC, and I really enjoyed this book. I loved the character growth, there was 🤭 just enough spice, and lots of mystery.

Sorrena, our FMC, just wants to complete the Anama Trials, to bond with her spirit, and find out the truth about her brothers death. I absolutely LOVED her character growth. She learns humility, but doesn't let it overrule her emotions.

Rhydian, her childhood best friend-turned "enemy", just wants his friend back. We watch them find their way back into each others' lives, but it's in a way neither of them imagined.

If there was one quote to sum it all up....

" 'You're going to have to choose, the owl or the raven...' '...Choose, Sorrena. Before the wolves tear us all apart.' "

I cannot wait to read book 2! I highly recommend you grab this when it comes out on June 26, 2025!

I received this book as an ARC- the first ARC I’ve received, actually. And truthfully? I was blown away. Peterson is an incredibly immersive author, transporting you seamlessly into a gripping fantasy world. You get magic and mystery and conflict and humor, all wrapped up in the series pilot. My only complaint is that now I must wait for the second book!

When Feathers Fall by N.M. Peterson is a fast-paced fantasy epic with an FMC named Sorrena who is over 30 and the heir to a throne, grappling with an overbearing and cold Queen and Mother.

Throughout the book she attempts to complete a series of trials that will result in her spirit bonding, which will strengthen her, give her magic, and provide a guide to aid her in the next chapter of her journey where she finds herself torn between familial obligation and an upcoming war where not all is what it seems.

There is a torturous yet flirty forbidden romance/fated mate that our heroine encounters in her childhood friend Rhydian, but that also doesn’t stop her from eyeing up plenty of other males in her circle, which is refreshing and hot. Rounding out thus delightful story is a quippy and fierce warrior of a friend in Ravka. I can’t wait for the next one!

Okay. So. Apparently, I like pain. Because this book? It reached into my chest, plucked out my heart, gave it a little poetry lesson, and then crushed it softly. I came for the vibes, and left in a spiral, clinging to one emotionally unwell raven like my life depended on it.

The prose? Absolutely gorgeous. Like if grief put on a velvet robe and whispered secrets into a storm. Every line felt intentional haunting without trying too hard, emotional without being melodramatic, and so immersive I forgot I was supposed to blink.

The story is quiet in all the ways that matter. No constant explosions or over-the-top theatrics, just raw, unraveling emotion tucked inside a world so rich with magic and lore that it practically hums. I loved the political tension, the morally gray threads, and that deep, aching undercurrent of loss that refuses to be ignored. This is about identity, legacy, grief, and oh yeah soul magic and rage-filled raven spirits.

It’s fantasy, yes. But at its core? It’s about a girl trying to survive the people who were supposed to protect her. And doing it with grit, magic, and a whisper of vengeance tucked under her ribs.

Final verdict? 5 stars. No notes. Just vibes, trauma, and a new emotional support book. 🖤🪶

"This time, I came for blood."

Holy five rings of hell, what a ride! It's been so long since I've found a book that can truly hold my attention, and When Feathers Fall did not only that but also left me *dying* for more. The author's writing style is addictive—a true love letter to the craft. Peterson paints a vivid world, creating an incredibly immersive reading experience that I expect thousands will one day enjoy.

This book is best described as The Hunger Games meets The Witcher with a dash of Game of Thrones and The Golden Compass. The world-building is top-notch and easy to understand. I love that the characters are all in their late twenties and early thirties. The maturity of their actions and dialogue, compared to other books in the high fantasy romance genre, is noticeable and a total breath of fresh air.

The book opens at the Obsidian Keep, where Sorrena Faelan is preparing to begin the Trials. Set to inherit her mother's queendom, she must compete in a series of tests that push her to her physical limits but also force her to rely on the strengths of her mind. This is all to prove that she and the other participants are worthy of taking on their Bond, which is essentially a spirit guide who can increase their power.

And the thing of it is, these Bonds? They've been with our characters in every life. Yep, there's a reincarnation storyline, but the thing is, there's no guarantee things will go according to plan. Your bond can reject you, or you might not be strong enough in this life for it.

Also, the Trials are not always deadly, but in this round with Sorrena, there are dangers at every turn, and not everyone survives. Plus, she must keep her evil stepbrother at bay, combat political intrigue, and maintain the illusion of civility with her mother.

Good thing this woman is a total badass.

And then there's Rhydian...

"Say that you're mine, and I'll bring the world to its knees for you."

Sir, I beg your finest pardon? You think it's okay to come in here looking the way you do, and talking like that, and expect me not to fall in love? I don't mean to play favorites because there are three potential love interests in this book, but Rhydian is the one for me. I'm taking that man home. Could someone bring me a to-go box?

And THEN the other two had to come in and tug on my heartstrings. I'm super invested in all three, with one other love interest neck-and-neck with Rhydian by the book's end.

I cannot WAIT for the next book. We have prophecies to fulfill, queendoms to take over, a war to thwart, and Sorrena will need to choose who will one day warm her bed.

10/10 Audiobook!!

After finishing book one in the Chains of Orenda Series, When Feathers Fall, I am absolutely certain that there is going to be pretty epic world and magic system building at play in this series. The magic system is super unique and something I cannot recall reading thus far in my romantasy book loving journey. You have spirit animal bonding but it is not just something that is inate in every person or is "awakened" at a certain age. No in order to obtain your spirit bond you have to go through and survive the harrowing and deadly Anama Trials. The kingdoms in this book are in constant tension and locked in a battle to keep the peace between nations. The Anama trials are supposed to be a sort of power leveling tool but there are questions on if it is truly an equal playing field. Also this is a series with actual adult characters which I love. We've got main characters in their early 30's which is super refreshing and I can relate to alot more than how a lot of romantasy books in the very least the main characters start out as teenagers. The FMC Sorrena is a fierce spitfire who is slow to trust and slightly blinded to the trials of the rest of the kingdom due to being sheltered from a lot of information growing up. She also loves fiercly and is determined to complete her bonding and come into her full power so that she can find out exactly what happened to her older brother. I loved that we get to witness as she acquires new knowledge of her world and how that starts to reform her actions and reactions. You have multiple different MMC's and this may turn into a why choose sort of situation down the road but I am unsure yet. There was honestly so many characters, so many kingdoms, and such a new magic system that at times I felt myself trying to look back and reference things and try to sort out who was who and where they were from again. Luckily the author does include a lot of information at the beginning of the book for you to look back at for reference. I hope that in the next installments I can really connect with the other characters besides Sorrena and remember who is who. At the end of the book I still felt like I had no idea what was going on but honestly maybe it was meant to be that way and I am still very interested to see where things go in the next book. If you love games and trials, political intrigue, and unique magic you will enjoy this book. It does end on a cliffhanger so be prepared for that.

😘 Favorite Quote -

“The sky above was torn open, bright pinpricks scattered like shattered glass across velvet. Some of them shimmered with faint color—green, red, blue—like someone had spilled precious stones across the heavens.
“It’s beautiful,” I breathed.
“Yes,” Rhydian replied.
But when I glanced at him, he wasn’t looking at the sky. He was looking at me.
“What?” I asked, my voice catching in my throat.
“I forget sometimes,” he said quietly, “how beautiful you really are.”

When Feathers Fall by N.M. Peterson was a wild ride from start to finish! The mystery is what truly hooked me—I couldn’t stop turning the pages because I had to know what was going to happen next. The action scenes were intense and kept me guessing the whole time, never knowing who to trust or what twist was around the corner.

I really loved the main character—she's tough, opinionated, and not afraid to kick some serious butt. She's also not afraid to speak her mind, even when it gets her into trouble 🙂. Her strong personality made her feel so real and easy to root for.

Now let’s talk about the romance… It made me mad more than once, but it also had me blushing. There’s definitely tension between the characters that keeps you invested, even if you want to shake them sometimes! There is one spice scene, but it doesn’t go into detail, which I appreciated.

I absolutely adored the friend group—they added warmth, humor, and loyalty to balance out the darker, action-packed parts of the story. My only real complaint is that I wish there had been more world-building at the start; it took me a bit to settle into the setting. Also, I was lost a bit on some of the parts in the book.

Overall, this was a fun, gripping read with a strong female lead, a mystery that kept me on edge, and a romance that gave me all the emotions. I’m definitely interested to see where the next book takes these characters!

I picked this book up without knowing anything about it—and I ended up completely falling in love.

At first, it felt mysterious and dark, and I wasn’t sure where it was going. But as the story unfolded, something clicked. Sorrena’s journey grabbed me in a way I didn’t expect—and didn’t let go.

She’s 30, powerful, and raised in a world that expects her to follow a path carved by others. Watching her slowly break away from that, find her own voice, and claim her future was deeply personal for me. I saw parts of myself in her—her doubts, her strength, her quiet defiance.

The worldbuilding is lush and layered, filled with magic, history, and a culture that feels lived in. But what stood out the most to me was the heart of this book: a woman coming into her power, and the deep emotional connections she builds along the way.

There’s a tenderness to the found family in this story that truly stayed with me. A group of people, all cast out from different corners of the world, finding purpose and belonging together. It was raw, beautiful, and incredibly healing to read.

The romance is slow-burn and emotionally rich—subtle, honest, and full of unspoken moments that say everything. Even though it’s closed-door, the tension and yearning are unforgettable.

This book surprised me in all the best ways. It made me feel seen, empowered, and reminded me how powerful it is to grow into the person you choose to be—not the one the world expects.

I still think about it every day.
And I already can’t wait for book two.

✨ For fans of:

From chapter titles to little quips made, every word in this story carries weight. A weight that will either cause you to sink into the depths, or push you into the skies. When Feathers Fall is an incredibly well woven story, with descriptions so detailed you can envision every moment and movement. This book will have you on the edge of your seat the entire time.

This book takes absolutely no time to get into. I know some fantasy stories can have an adjustment period while you get used to the systems and characters. Not When Feathers Fall. You can dive right in.
The story is stressful in a fun way? It’ll have you on edge the entire time, worried what’s going to go wrong next, who will attempt to sabotage an already difficult task.
There’s definitely really good dialogue with lots of fun little quotables. The conversations feel real and not forced, which I appreciate. Sometimes books can have dialogue that feel more like an info dump than something an actual person would say. It also features amazing descriptions that let the reader feel like they are actually there witnessing it. I look forward to seeing fanart made.
I liked the characters quite a bit. There’s a healthy mix of characters you hope stay safe and ones you hope can get hit in the face with a chair. Villains you hope fail, heroes you hope succeed, misguided ones you hope find clarity, and everyone in between. The Main character keeps going knocked down but keeps getting back up, because she has no other choice.
All in all, absolutely fantastic story that is well written and captivating. I hated having to put it down to go to work or sleep. And I’m so excited for the sequel to come out!!

Oof that ending hit me like a brick wall, and that reveal was somewhat unexpected but also I never liked that girl so I’m not surprised, something was off about her.

If you’re looking for a new fantasy world to dive into filled with court intrigue, magic, trials and of course some longing and tension, you should check out this series. There is plenty of action in this first book as a majority of it is made up of the trials the FMC in order to earn her bonded that will allow her access to magic and gain her rightful place as heir to her throne. When everything in the trials is not as it seems, and there are plots going on within them, she must decide who she can trust and what side of all of this she falls on.

I loved all the banter this book was filled with between the FMC and pretty much every character. I love a snarky female best friend who’s not afraid to put her in her place so Ravka is easily one of my favorites. I also love a childhood best friend turned lover but they just can’t seem to overcome whatever is holding them apart which makes the tension super sharp between them. I can’t wait to find out what happens in the next book and how all this tension between the kingdoms that’s brewing will shake out. Overall my rating 4.7/5!

Thanks to the author and crowns and chaos or for the gifted copy, all opinions given are my own!

When I tell you this book changed me, I bloody mean it. The characters might be over 30 and I might’ve been an adult for a long time, but reading it felt like my inner child healed, witnessing strong (even if not crystal clean) female characters.

It’s so beautiful. So beautifully written, so gripping, immersing you in the new world so much that it’s near impossible to get back to reality.

Nicole will be huge. Mark my words.

The FMC is strong, both mentally and physically, confident, dangerous, more often than not - cold and calculated. She is not a helpless little child in an adult’s body.

MMCs are interesting, layered, flawed and varied.

Now, SPOILERS AHEAD!

I LOVED the somewhat reversed gender roles, the women ruling their queendoms, the men being perceived as less suited for leadership, Seraphine being ‘cold, unfeeling, vicious’ and Sor’s father being empathetic - SO REFRESHING.

Sor’s character development, understanding the common folk, was beautiful to witness. Description of the Veil, demons and fight scenes were gruesome, terrifying and such a good contrast to the other parts of the book.

Overall, amazing, 10/10, wish I could read again for the first time.

Sorrena entered the keep knowing her role as princess, and knew she wanted to find out the secrets to get her revenge. She was cold as ice, distant, with her walls up. But along the way through the dangerous trials, she makes not just alliances, but friendships that changes everything for her, even who she is.

The trials are dangerous with so many dying at every turn. Surviving isn’t the only thing she has to worry about. With so many secrets and so many things held back from her, she knows she has to do everything to change everything for the better.

In the beginning of this, I didn’t care for her too much. She was a bit dramatic but I did love how strong she was. But as time went on and she opened herself up more, I loved the person she was morphing into. Someone with empathy, and doing anything to find out the truth and knowing she could make a change.

Rhydian even though being brute, a bit serious, but lethal- is the perfect match for her. He didn’t like the cold person she had become after being apart from her for so long. But knowing everything changed with their bonds, they are destined to be together.

This was such a good book, I can’t wait to find out what else is going to happen, and what it all means by the chosen one, and what else is going to unfold.

When Feathers Fall caught my interest immediately. I was intrigued by the characters, the world, the magic…The magic is based on spirit bonds that bond to the same person every time they reincarnate which I thought was really interesting. The FMC is Sorrena. This girl has been through and survived a lot. She seems a bit naive but strong and purposeful in her actions at the same time. I really enjoyed that she was in her 30s which is uncommon. I’m not 100% sure who the MMC is. The book sets up 3 possibilities for Sorrena….definitely conflicted about who I want her with too. There are prophecies and “this happens the same in every life” occurrences. There is a lot of mystery in this book that I’m looking forward to seeing resolved. It seems that many of the side characters know that’s that Sorrena doesn’t and therefore we don’t either since the story is told from her POV entirely. I do feel that some of the relationships that were just starting to evolve leaped ahead and left me lost and wanting for more. Overall, I really enjoyed this one and can’t wait for book 2!! Thank you for the opportunity to read this one a bit early!
