"I haven’t always been a writer. My parents are writers and my brother is a writer, and I resisted that as long as I could. When I was 17, I hopped in a band’s van and I went on tour for a summer, and that was it, that was what I wanted to do. I ran a record label for 10 years, a small indie punk label. I did everything in music that you can do that doesn’t involve having musical ability. Eventually the music business, probably in a similar way to comics, will just start to break your heart, and I realized one day that I kind of hated music. I was resigned to thinking, if I’m going to be involved in music forever, I’m going to hate it for the rest of my life. I just stopped. I stopped having any sort of business with music, any involvement.

I read comics my whole life, so I just naturally fell back into another medium that is marginalized and hard to make a living in."

Just not what I signed up for anymore, really. We’re not even fighting vampires anymore. We’re always fighting Darkseid. At least I liked the stuff going on with Damian, “Batman”, Black Alice, Deadman, and Alfred. I’m not familiar with the character(s) from the backup story but I just KNOW this has Doom Patrol shenanigans written all over it. Cool and fun even though I didn’t fully know what was going on.

I am loving the continual buildup for this and the jaw dropping revelations…even if some people could be a bit more forthcoming with information…looking at you Constantine. And I continue to love the backup stories and the peculiar corners of the dc universe they are able to explore, this one really caught me off guard following Shade, the changing woman, especially as I know next to nothing about that world. But it was overall quite enjoyable. We pickup directly from the last issue as Scott Free steals Cyborg’s jet and goes right for what was once coast city…only to immediately run into vampires Raven and Ghostmaker. Fortunately Steel and Lobo are also there representing the human side to pull Scott in for a joint meeting of the councils…immediately adjusting his perspective to realize how serious this is that these two groups are working together. Elsewhere in Gotham city, Alfred and Ra’s continue to rip their way through the city following baby deadman’s directions to Arkham Asylum’s basement where they find none other than Black Alice holed up with some apparent magical items protecting her. She is has been holed up here the entire time alone and is completely drained of energy and magic, so until she can get her hands on a source of magic to steal…she is useless to them.

As Scott is brought to the secret sanctuary he is given some food and an update in the situation with Darkseid, but even aware of this situation the last thing he wanes to do is kill. But Orion and the rest of the New Gods are here as well and present a solution outside of killing as Darkseid is actually opening to a meeting to talk now. Scott is not buying into the idea that Darkseid just wanes his son back, Orion of all people understands the hell that awaits Scott if he returns. But the other heroes, like Kara, appeal to Earth becoming his home as they know he wouldn’t want to see it destroyed either. Scott storms out of the room vowing to die before returning, but as he steps out he gets to spend a quiet moment with his daughter…until Ollie cuts through it. He was left out of the meeting because he doesn’t play well with the biters. But he got right down to it, they both know what kind of guy Scott is and that he will ultimately help but if he wants Ollie’s advice…if he had the power to destroy the worst thing in the universe he would take it…but Scott isn’t like Ollie and that may cost them Earth. Scott then found a peaceful spot near the sanctuary to watch a possible final sunrise with his daughter, there Alfred and Baby Deadman join him to speak. Alfred comes with a simple cryptic message…don’t trust them. When prodded further about who exactly…Alfred clarified Scott’s people, as they are not what they seem. Scott agrees, as the only person he has left is his daughter. Hilariously deadman then chimes in, freaking Scott right out as he has no clue who deadman is. Scott slips away with a final warning from them to be wary as he is important and the life of his family is as well.

Over in the Bronx, Ra’s has tracked Damian to a gas station where he is resting. Ra’s has found him as they need his help, more specifically the Hellblazer needs his help in tracking down a specific vampire…and an alliance has never stopped Damian before. A day later and Damian delivered on the favor, showing up to meet Batman and Black Alice with vampiric Klarion all tied up with his tongue continually cut out to prevent him from casting any spells. Alice gets to work draining the magic from Klarion’s body, and once she is done Damian immediately stakes the little bastard. That could be a mistake in case Alice fails…so she better not screw up.

But the day of the meeting between the alliance and Darkseid has come as they all show up on the doorstep of the hall of justice where he has taken up residency. They are forced to bow, leaving only Scott Free and his daughter standing. But as this is occurring killer moth gets a call from cyborg. Vic has finally reached dinosaur island from Atlantis and he has an urgent message…the new gods were on the island and now EVERYONE is dead. The new gods swapped sides. This hits killer moth like a truck has he tries to stay calm and alert Grodd to this revelation as they need to leave NOW. But it’s already too late, as Darkseid has Scott Lois attempts to organize the rest of the deal so he will leave…but darkseid refuses as his only goal is to wipe them all out and now he has the aid of all the New Gods! Suddenly he orders the attack as ALL of the new gods descend onto the group. Darkseid was actually able to convince high father that the disease of the vampires cannot be allowed to spread through the galaxy and they must all be wiped out here. Supergirl immediately beats Orion into the ground for this betrayal, but Grodd orders her to leave the scene now. If she falls here they have all lost and she must leave to find their queen and the rest of the survivors so they may fight another day.

As we quickly interrupt this chaos to check back in on black Alice, she is able to channel all of her magic to reach out. She suddenly erupts and falls back down believing that she has failed…but she is more powerful than she believes as before them now stands Doctor Fate, Spectre, Phantom Stranger, and the spirit of John Constantine! The heavy hitters are BACK!! But as the issue comes to an end, Scott stands in one of Darkseid’s hands with his daughter in the other as he pleads for his father to stop. But the disease corrupts Scott as well and Scott has forgotten where he has come from if he truly believes he will be brought home safely after running away. Darkseid wanted him solely to remind him that he can never escape from home. As the issue comes to an end the fighters look on in horror as darkseid bursts Scott apart in his hand. But this is still mister miracle we are talking about, and with all the warning he was given ahead of time…I fully believe he can escape this.

But then we get into the backup story and the wildly depressing world of shade the changing woman surviving the end of the world with her friends. She is taking the two of them to a location where there are rumors of a hero sanctuary. Along the way if they come across vampires, Shade uses herself as bait to lure the vampires in, having them drink her blood to succumb to the effects of her powers, finally allowing her friends to easily stake them…kite man didn’t stand a chance, lol. But things are bad, Shade continues to use herself powers to fill her friends heads with feels of hope and to let them sleep peacefully, killing herself in the process. But there are worse alternatives, shade the changing man appears to her to show her what he has done with his friends. He has put them to use in his establishment where he puts images of horror and madness into their heads to get a great blood high. I’m not exactly sure if changing man has been changed into a vampire himself or if he is feeding his friends to vampires, but it’s not a good situation. But all hope is lost for the changing woman when her group finally arrives to the supposed hero sanctuary…to find it destroyed and abandoned. Her friends immediately begin to freak out and she is left with no other options other than to take them to the changing man’s domain to keep them safe. It may be hell here as well, but it’s a hell she knows.

Awesome issue to be honest. I get some poeple get turned of by Dakrseid getting the spotlight, but I think it works exceptionally well here because the main, themes, about corruption and who is going to become a monster (not necessarily a vampire) are still great. He even managed to turn the to his side by using vampirism as a scapegoat. I thought it was great because even characters like Kara, who have given their lives to save the Earth, find themselves udged unworthy, which to me make push them towards their own corruption in the form of their now-only-alllies.

I missed this series, even when the story is probably at its weakest, it is still so far above most comics. That ending took me by surprise.
