Read this while travelling India for a month and then Indonesia for another month… And it was so relevant to understand more deeply hinduism and the roots of these civilizations. Arjuna whom I consider the hero of this great story, is depicted very often, and gave the name to places and streets. The overall sexism is shocking in the book, but I chose to see it as a testamony of ancient times, and may it shock us and make us realise how far we’ve come and where we never wanna go back 🙏 The really big quality about this book is the use of great metaphors and symbolic actions, that makes it all very powerful and timeless :)

Comme Soundjata et Sindbad le marin, j'ai eu à lire ce roman (des extraits du moins) pour la fac et ai donc pu en parallèle assister à un cours à leur propos. En tant que livre scolaire, j'ai bien aimé cette oeuvre qui reste quand même assez complexe à comprendre de par le nombre énorme de personnages et des coutumes ou croyances indienne qui ne nous sont pas habituelles. Cela reste cependant agréable à lire et très fluide, j'ai bien aimé ma lecture.

A must read for anyone who wants to better understand Indian culture.
An excellent summary of the integral version (though I must say I did not read the integral original version!!!), with also extracts from the original verses of the poem (a huge plus for me). Only thing here : it is very black (Kauravas) and white (Pandavas). I read in parallel the shorter version of Carriere which has more nuances (characters with their faults and qualities), but no extract of the original poem.
Between both versions, the one of Demetrian is more moving, poetic, and more complete I assume.
