Let's start this off with an invitation to get some FREE books. No, you didn't read that wrong, we are talking about multiple free books. I love giving away free books because once people delve into the fast-paced mystery thrills I write, they go on to buy lots more.
When I wrote my first novel, Paranormal Nonsense, I was a Captain in the British Army. I would love to pretend that I had one of those careers that has to be redacted and in general denied by the government and that I have had to change my name and continually move about because I am still on the watch list in several countries. In truth though, I started out as a mechanic. Not like Jason Statham, sneaking about as a contract killer, more like one of those greasy gits that charge you a fortune and keep your car for a week when all you went in for was a squeaky door hinge.
At school, I was mostly disinterested in every subject except creative writing, for which, at age ten, I won my first award. However, calling it my first award suggests that there have been more, which there have not. Accolades may come but, in the meantime, I am having a ball writing mystery stories and crime thrillers and will claim to have more than a hundred books forming an unruly queue in my head as they clamor to get out.
Now retired from the military, I live in the south-east corner of England with a pair of lazy sausage dogs. Surrounded by rolling hills, brooding castles, and vineyards, I doubt I will ever leave, the beer is just too good.
Lyme Regis Layover by Steve Higgs is the 15th book in the Albert Smiths Culinary Capers series. Retired policeman Albert Smith and his 'assistance' dog Rex Harrison, having solved the Gastrothief case, were invited to Lyme Regis by one of the kidnapped chefs to sample their Dorset Knobs only to find the chef murdered with the local police calling the death a suicide. Albert feels it is up to him to investigate. Another fun mystery with Rex recruiting the local dogs to help. Rex is always the star and I love the bond that he shares with Albert. Even though this is the end of the Culinary capers series, I'm glad that Albert and Rex will be travelling through Europe for further adventures.
An exceptional, un-put-downable book, with murder, mystery and humour. With lots of twists and turns. A good ending to this series of books, can't wait for the next ones.
. Love Steve Higgs books! Always funny and interesting! Looking at their adventures through Rex's thoughts makes the tales even more enjoyable and the scrapes he gets into however innocently always give new insights into the new friends, whether they be dogs, cats or humans, they meet along the way. Rex's and Albert are a great team. I have loved the information and recipes about each culinary delight they encountered on their journey. I'd love to make that trip but without all the murders and kidnappings, etc. along the way. Thank you, Steve Higgs for the hours of enjoyment from getting away while reading your books!
I made it through the last book in this series. I have read all the books in the series, except for two that I haven't been able to locate yet. Although I have enjoyed reading about Arthur and Rex as they travel around England, I have been a bit put off by the number of typos throughout the texts. Also, for some inexplicable reason, the author kept changing the layout styles throughout the series which, by itself, is no big deal, but by reading so many books in the series in chronological order, the changes in the layout were obvious and a bit strange.
Like the other books in the series, this one is a mystery, a whodunit, that takes place in a culinary setting. And, like the other books in the series, this one contains some typos in the text as well as some layout issues. But, also like the other books in the series, if you like this type of story (and I do), you would enjoy reading this book.
This series of fascinating books hit a big note for me. As I am a recent widow of advanced years, who greatly misses my Irishman almost a year ago, (I also miss the biggest dog who ever loved me for seventeen years) my imagination was sparked. I loved all the characters brought in to his life, and as I still have my motorcycle, a pair of “itchy feet” and love a good puzzle, my family is not sure about my own next chapter. The spirit of Albert and determination of Rex are so wonderful and the plot twists are amazing with satisfying conclusions. Thank you so much Mr Higgs.
Though Albert and Rex finally got the Gastrothief, Albert thought his much disrupted culinary tour of England really needed at least one stop unencumbered by mayhem. Whoops! This is Albert and Rex. While Albert never causes any of the crimes that disrupted his tour, his “nose” for finding trouble leads him into more in Lyme Regis. If Steve Higgs hadn’t already promised further Albert and Rex adventures, I’d be bereft. However, I enjoyed this “final” (for now) adventure and can’t wait for more.
Okay, Albert and Rex got me through the pandemic lockdown. And helped me grieve the loss of a mostly beloved German Shepherd whom we had to say goodbye just as the world went quiet. I am sure Vince and Rex would have been pals. The happenstance of being a senior like Albert helped too. Testing new adventures and finding strengths you thought were all in the past was a pleasure. Not to mention the laughs. This series was a delightful find. Enjoy. Looking forward to the next leg of their journey.
I’ve read the entire 15-book series, and I have to say it was an enjoyable, entertaining read. Unlike typical cozy mysteries or crime thrillers, these books had enough good detective work to keep the reader engaged AND some heartwarming and humorous elements to lighten the mood. I frequently stopped to read a particularly enjoyable turn of phrase or description aloud to my husband after providing context. I can’t wait for the next series of Albert’s adventures. I honestly don’t know how Steve Higgs can be so prolific.
I read the series starting with book one, only knowing that the combination of a dog on the cover and a food tour of England would somehow intertwine with a new mystery series. I was already a fan of Steve Higgs' Patricia Fisher series and have enjoyed this one as well. Looking forward to the continued escapades of Rex and Albert in the upcoming new series. If you like light mysteries with PG rated plots and clever writing, give Steve Higgs' many books a try.
This actual rating is 3.5. Editing errors and many repeated sentences and passages, this is the best of all books I've read in all the series. This story had fun, suspense, energy! And guess what!!? A woman didn't almost pee her pants quaking with fear, no gross racial or sexual tropes as in almost all other of this author's books. While the culprit wad known pretty early, this story was well written and ended the series well. I'm finally impressed. This is the best book of all in this author's series.
As an author of clean, cost mysteries myself I'm always looking for something a little different in this category. I've just read the whole 15 books back-to-back and I give them all 5 stars. I love Albert and Rex equally, what a duo! We all have different
ways of writing a story and even though I cracked every case ahead of time it didn't take anything away. Looking forward to the next series! Favourite moment? The plane ride and the dog's comments! Least favourite our old guy getting clobbered a lot!
A Good Ending Baking. It can get a guy killed. And this time it does. A murder staged to look like a suicide fools everyone except Albert Smith. He knows better. In Lyme Regis with his faithful dog, the victim invited him to visit the seaside resort. Now he’s dead and Albert wants to know why. Albert and Rex get into trouble again. This time it wasn't the Gastrothief but a equally bad guy. I borrowed this book from KindleUnlimted. This in no way affects my opinion of this book.
The prologue is worth the price of admission. And Rex has a starring role. It's a rollicking race to catch the killer and the Pet Posse are ready to roll helping Rex in riotous scenes. Danger is everywhere. There is an amusing surprise when the paleontologist finally reveals his name. This series has been enthralling and this has to be the best ending to a series ever. Very Highly Recommended.
Oh, what a great end to Albert and Rex's culinary capers! One last specialty to try, the Dorset Knob, made by a man that Albert had just rescued from The Gastrothief's lair. Invited by that man, Albert and Rex arrive in Lyme Regis to find him dead and chaos abounds from there. Rex is featured, along with cohorts he picks up along the way, and he does a good job of trying to solve the situation. A great end to this particular series. I will be happy to see what their future adventures will be.
Wow , what an awesome last in series! Rex does his fair share in this one with a posse of pooches and other furry friends but this is serious sleuthing amongst the wit and humour associated with this series . Albert isn’t convinced that these people have committed suicide at all , it doesn’t add up so he goes all out to investigate with a new ally .
I received an ARC and reviewing in my own words voluntary
I just loved this series. I read all 15 and grew so attached to Rex and Albert I almost cried when I finished the last book. Steve Higgs made the animals in the series almost human. I enjoyed the interaction of Rex and all his buddies. It was nice to read a series with no swearing or gruesome details. I would recommend this set of 15 books to anyone who needs a break or who needs a bit of fun in their reading choices.
If you have not yet read Steve Higgs’ Albert Smith Culinary Capers series, you are missing out on one of the most entertaining reads ever. Do yourself a favor and get lost in these books — but do begin with Book 1, as they tend to build on each other. While you’re at it, check out Higgs’ other delightful series too. His Patricia Fisher books are fantastic. Steve is one of the best cozy authors on the planet!
Now that the story of the Gastrothief has ended, Albert and Rex could go home, but Albert decides to make one last stop first. One of the Gastrothief's victims, a baker, has invited him to Lyme Regis to sample Dorset Knobs, the famous rolls that got him kidnapped. Before they have a chance to visit the bakery, Rex finds a body at the foot of a cliff, and unfortunately, Albert will never get to sample the baker's wares.
What a wonderful time I’ve had with Albert and Rex and their adventures through Britain! I’m going there next year, and I might check out some of those oh-so-British villages!
These were very well written and clever stories, with some laugh-out-loud moments, usually Rex-related.
I hope there will be more stories set in Kent…kind of like Hercule Poirot getting mixed up in murder when all he wanted to do was retire and grow vegetable marrows (zucchini??).
Gutted this series is finished but what a way to go out - yet again Rex and Albert find themselves in the thick of things and unbelieved. in a race against time to stop another killing Rex and Albert find themselves right back in the Thick of it and seconds away from a fatal end . Sad to see this series end, going to wait patiently for the next Rex and Albert series but in the mean time im going to read some other books by Steve Higgs
I sat down to read a couple chapters as I was quite exhausted from my day. Before long, my eyes kept trying to close but I was so involved by the story I just kept pushing on--until I had the whole book read. If you enjoy Albert & Rex, you'll enjoy this story as well. Rex does shine and the tender bond between Rex and Albert will have you hungering for more. I loved the bones and all the good humor that abounds. Great read!!
Another rollicking good adventure with Albert and Rex. Author Steve Higgs captures the reader from the very first page and you don’t want to put it down! I enjoyed all of Patricia Fisher’s adventures and Blue Moon Mysteries before I started reading about Albert and Rex’s culinary tour of the British Isles. I was skeptical about stories about an old man searching for famous recipes and a German Shepherd that talks to other dogs and cats but I was very pleasantly surprised. Very fun reads!
Sad to have reached the end of this series. Each and every book was well written and kept you turning the pages. There are hints of more adventures for Albert and Rex and I will be watching out for them. I would recommend this series for any person who likes cozy mysteries, they are both light hearted and serious. A lot of thought goes into the characters and their interaction with each other. The descriptions of the locations are vivid enough to put you in the scene.
Perhaps returning home is a good thing On the final leg of an epic journey around the English and Welsh countryside, Albert and Rex, once again, find themselves in a pickle. This time things become quite a bit more dangerous. Sooo...perhaps going home, now, would be in order? Safe and sound and just relaxing for a change, perhaps? Great story and a fantastic end to an epic journey!
I love a mystery, and I love fun stories. Steve Higgs crafts great fun mysteries with perfectly imperfect characters that I just love to read! I started with the Patricia series, then discovered Albert & Rex. Very different, both wonderful. While I am waiting for more of those, I'll try one of his other series.
I will sorely miss Rex Harrison and his human Albert Smith. It has been a long time since I've had the pleasure of enjoying a series so much. Just enough thrills to keep you waiting but not enough to keep you from turning out the light and sleeping. And the characters are like family ..good and bad.
You just can't help loving the characters and adventures in these books. They are fun, lots of humor, and edge of your seat chases with Rex. Absolutely wonderful and well written.
I'll be getting books now from his other series to read.
These stories have every good thing a book should have: humor, adventure, mystery, compassion, and a grand grasp of a fine dog’s thinking. Yes, as years of owning and showing dogs; I’ve a good idea. Glad to hear they’re continuing and until the next series I’ll have to reread this one.
The ending to this series was great. This series & this ending book have been awesome. To have a police dog who is as smart as Rex is very entertaining. . . It is a great series more laid back because of Albert's age, but still, the mystery is there. And getting to who done it definitely keeps you on your toes.
