Storms and Spirits is a good, face-paced YA/fantasy read!
Storms and Spirits is the third part of a novella trilogy authored by Tamara Grantham. It's the story of June Brighton, an 18-year-old Hispanic girl with a sister dying of leukemia and largely absentee parents. June's "Shine" -- that is her superhuman ability -- is to hear heartbeats. In a previous installment, she is hunted down by "Revens," in essence, shadowy fighters and bounty hunters. One of them, Memphis Stone, befriends June and June's British friend and fellow Shine Naomi and recruits them to find the master of the Revens anmed, "le Teuer Revenant." Their journey takes them across the US, from New York to Lousiana and Canada.
The plot moves well with well-scripted dialogue and the writing lends itself to authentic feeling location shifts. The story has enough twists and turns to keep the reader interested. The love story between June and her former captor Memphis as well as June's Shine ability elevating from heartbeat observation to manipulation gradually progresses and feels organic. My only negative comments would be that one of the story's twists, which I'd hoped would end one way, got resolved in a deux ex machina sort of fashion with little explanation and there were some editorial mistakes here and there. A solid read all around..
LOVED THIS! This was the 3rd story in the Revens series for the Shine books, books 10, 11 & 12, and my fav of the 3 for sure. This one had so many tense moments and so much suspense. June, Memphis and Naomi are headed to New Orleans to track down Lavelle and stop him, if they can figure out how. There are so many crazy twists and it is such a unique story line. I found my self surprised and saying "NO WAY' a few times. I absolutely ADORED the ending to this book too!! Love loved loved it! These 3 novellas together make one novel length book, and together they make an amazing story!
As the author, I can honestly say this is one of my favorite books. New Orleans is such a interesting city. It's the perfect setting for a good ghost story. Researching for this book was almost as fun as writing it. The Myrtles Plantation has a violent past, and makes it the perfect inspiration for my fictional plantation, Magnolia Acres.
