3.5 stars!

I've been a fan of Glen Krisch for a few years now, so when a free copy of Arkadium Rising was offered to me in exchange for an honest review, how could I say no?

This is a post apocalyptic tale wherein a group called the Arkadium purposely brings about the end of the world as we know it. It turns out that this group has been around since nearly the beginning of humanity itself. It also turns out that they are not the only ancient group in town. THAT is what set this book apart from other PA tales.

I liked the characterization in this book, most especially the two brothers Jason and Marcus. They are related, but not alike. Marcus, being a part of the Arkadium himself is all gung-ho while Jason wants nothing to do with it. (Which may have something to do with what Marcus and the other members do to bring about the end times; hint: it's not pretty.) Marcus wants Jason to be the scribe/record keeper of the event and Jason just wants to get away.

There were a couple of characters that irritated me: Delaney, sleazy and psychotic girlfriend of Marcus, got on my nerves. And although I did love the character of Jason, at times I found him to be a little wishy-washy and repetitive in his thinking.

Overall though, I thought the story was interesting and it did have portions that made it unique. While I had issues with a few of the characters, the story did get to me and I'm looking forward to reading what's next for the Arkadium.

Let me start off by saying that I am not a fan of the post apocalyptic genre. To be honest, it began and ended for me with Richard Matheson's brilliant I AM LEGEND.

And then, along comes Glen Krisch. I have been a fan of the man's writing since I first read WHERE DARKNESS DWELLS. Now, I will happily follow him wherever his writing takes me. He's that good and getting better with every word he writes.

This tale is no exception, concerning two brothers, separated by all the usual things that come between siblings.....and a doomsday cult with a hands on approach to the Final Days, and a chilling vision of a bleak future for the human race.

Brimming over with spot-on characterizations, all the thrills and chills anyone could ask for, and the promise of more coming, this novel is a must-have for anyone who enjoys excellent writing.

Highest possible recommendation!

Arkadium Rising is the story of two brothers, Marcus and Jason Grant, different as night and day, as many brothers are. What sets these brothers apart is one of them has played an important part in bringing about a new post apocalyptic world.

Arkadium Rising is the first in the new Brothers Keeper series from Glen Kirsch. Although, close to 350 pages long, the story does little more than set the stage for things to come. It does a nice job in establishing the strained relationship between the brothers and introduces the reader to a number of important characters along the way, but we are left in the dark when it comes to the organization responsible for the destruction of civilization and what's to come.

Arkadium Rising is a character driven story of survival in this brave new world, a world without power, with a few notable exceptions. It's a story that is epic in scope and with this being the first segment in the overall Brothers Keeper saga, you get the feeling the writer has barely scratched the surface.

This quote on one of the main characters state of mind pretty much sums things up. "Kylie shifted on her feet, feeling the effects of no sleep, little food, the weight of a seemingly endless string of tragedy. Her mother had totally lost her marbles. Her dad was missing. Her trailer and all of her earthly possessions were most likely burned to cinders. And now Monique was dead. And to top it all off, they were running away to... she hadn't the foggiest idea, and were now part of a group of... what? Survivalists? Armed militia? A frickin' cult?"

Arkadium Rising is Glen's first work to be published by JournalStone. it will be available in a variety of formats on their website on December 5th, 2014, but I did notice the Kindle version is available now at Amazon.com.

3.5 rounded up to 4

I recently read and enjoyed Where Darkness Dwells and the author offered a copy of this book so I jumped at the chance.(I did go and buy a copy later)

The first book of a planned PA trilogy, the story concentrates on two estranged brothers. One just trying to make his way through life and the other a leader of an eco-cult determined to return the earth to nature. The Arkadium has infiltrated every aspect of current society and triggers a global event while coordinating small groups for local acts of terror.
Initially the story is fairly black and white but as we progress there are more nuances added and by the end you aren't completely sure which group might actually be the big bad. Being the first part of a trilogy there are quite a few questions left unanswered but the author does a nice job of whetting your appetite for what lies ahead.

A good start to a story that has piqued my interest.

I have made no secret in the past of my love of the writings of Glen Krisch. I make no apologies for it and after reading his latest book, Arkadium Rising, I intend to start shouting it from the rooftops again.

Marcus and Jason Grant are brothers. Jason the sensible one holding down a steady job and doing the chores for mom and dad, Marcus the younger, rowdier one driven by a life of crime and drugs. No one has seen Marcus in a long time when his ex-girlfriend Delany comes looking for Jason. She has heard from Marcus and wants Jason’s help to go get him. When they find him, Marcus seems to be the leader of a band of religious fanatics who all seem to be members of some strange doomsday cult. Marcus and his band are to set in motion a process that will end the world as we know it. Jason has to decide whether to run from Marcus, or run with him.

And there ends what I can say about this book without giving too much away. This is the first book in a trilogy that fans of Mr Krisch like myself have been waiting for with bated breath. The end result is a story that still gets you holding your breath from cover to cover.

It’s a story about the end of the world as we know it. A post-apocalyptic novel if you like. That’s not all it is though. This first part of the trilogy sees us introduced to the main characters in the story but when you start reading, don’t be expecting them to all make it through this first third. This is written in such a way that you grasp the different personalities very easily. There is just the right amount of time taken to introduce each individual so that you think you have known them for years. As it flits back and forwards to different groups at different times, it fits perfectly together. In the run up to the conclusion of this portion of the tale, it reaches fever pitch and raises many many questions leaving you wondering where it will lead to and who will be involved and in what capacity. It’s a wonderful cliff-hanger ending but at the same time would work as a stand-alone novel. One that leaves you thinking about it for a long time when you finish it.

As well as being a novel it raises so many questions about the society we live in today and the type of people we walk amongst. It will make you ask questions of yourself, about your behaviours, your desires, everything that you take for granted and the direction your life is taking you. The biggest question of all is asked near the ending – is what you have believed in all your life the right and true way? I can’t wait for the next instalment to find out.

It’s dark. It’s thrilling. It’s edge of the seat stuff. It’s harrowing at times and enlightening at others. It’s Krisch.

Highest recommendation with 5 big stars.

Arkadium Rising is the story of the vicious, cruel murder of our world. It grabs you by the scruff of the neck and shakes you, keeps you off balance and re-evaluating your opinions from chapter to chapter, and then it drops you off the edge of the last page wondering what happened and demanding to know what will happen next. I hesitated to read it at first, as I hate the idea of a mass murderer using the preservation of nature as an excuse. Don’t worry; Glen Krisch doesn’t make it sound like a good idea, and he doesn’t use the theme to mock environmentalists, either. It’s a story about people, and it’s up to the reader to decide who is crazy, who is sane, who is cruel and who is kind. In particular, it’s the story of two brothers, Marcus and Jason, who stand on different sides of the destruction, on pretty much everything, but who depend on each other in the horrifying world of civilization destroyed. There are other characters who make us care about their survival, their faith and their relationships with each other, from a cat with a cowlick to a darling old lady with dementia. It’s like a nightmare ride on a roller coaster in the dark, disturbing and compelling, and these characters are riding along with you.
If you absolutely can’t stand cliff-hangers, you may have to wait for the rest of the series and read them all at once, but even my daughter, who swore she would do this from now on, hasn’t been able to pass up a good story. Buy it now. Read a couple of chapters and then decide. Then we can all discuss what’s going on in the story and where it might go while we wheedle Mr. Krisch to hurry up and give us another volume.

I began ARKADIUM RISING knowing it was promised as a trilogy and prayed it would not end in the fashion so many authors are wont to do; leaving the ending open with a cliff-hanger. Krisch pulls off a stand-alone novel with a great ending and just enough left unsaid for a reader to pray for another.

When I originally read the short story Glen Krisch wrote that inspired this novel, I thought, ‘what a great idea for a novel and such a waste on a short story’. Obviously, the author felt the same as he has written a superb novel of the strange relationship between two brothers, opposites of the same coin as well as not; the apparent collapse of mankind and a spooky religious order responsible for it, and well fleshed out characters that elicit a wide range of emotion for the reader. There is (clichéd I know) mystery, intrigue, surprises, revelations, and a well thought out climax. There -is- no other way to describe it accurately.

It is not too difficult to suspend belief for a religious order to plot for millennia to destroy humanity and return the Earth back to nature, its manner, nor the fact that while the Arkadium accomplished their goal that they screwed it up. Some of the characters are a bit thin and lack back-story because the original group existed prior to the story, but they are minor players and adding to their characters would have made the plot slow. The main characters are well done and easy for the reader to become attached.

The quirks in the brothers’, Jason and Marcus, and their duplicitous personalities makes interesting reading and is the primary drive for the plot which in itself is evil. There is no shortage of bloodshed as it is indeed, the end of the world. The Anaki were sheer brilliance and reminiscent of the Norse Berserkers; humans taught to do nothing but kill and destroy indiscriminately. Seriously scary evil on top of everything else.

A delicious novel and I’m already craving book II.

I tend not to give 5 stars as it is usually felt to be too generous, but this is well deserving.

I received an advanced copy of this novel for an honest review.

Okay, truth time, it's actually been quite a while since I read this book and I swore that I had reviewed it, but apparently not. Bear with me, because it has been quite a while.

This book tells a post-apocalyptic tale of a cult plotting to revert civilization to a time before technology.

It wasn't a bad book, but I'm also not jumping to read it again to remember more details.

Arkadium Rising is the first book in the Brother’s Keeper series by Glen Krisch. It is the story of two brothers, one of whom is estranged from the family due to his drug addiction. When the story begins Jason is visited by his brother’s ex-girlfriend, Delaney, who informs him that not only is his brother clean, but that he has found religion. At first Jason is sceptical and despite knowing this he does not want anything to do with Marcus. His mind is changed, however, when the family receive some bad news and Jason leaves with Delaney to bring Marcus home. What Jason hasn’t been told is that Marcus is high up in the hierarchy of Arkadium, a religious cult that intends on bringing an end to life as Jason knows it.

Arkadium Rising is a fast paced and gripping read with a host of interesting and complex characters all with their own desires and beliefs driving them forward to survive in the new world that dramatically unfolds. There was a lot of violence and bloodshed as you would expect. The emotions running throughout the book were unfaltering and the existing (and new) relationships and connections between the characters made it feel very real.

As it is the first in the series the ending is left open, but without detracting from being able to enjoy the novel as a standalone. I very much look forward to reading the second book in the series.

I was given a free copy of this ebook in exchange for an honest review.

I don't do the whole synopsis thing when I review, you can find that in many different places, instead I'm more interested in the enjoyment factor of a book. This started slowly for me, I think mainly because I had read the short story it is based on and the first part is quite similar to the short, but by the middle of the book I was hooked and by the last few chapters I ended up staying up late because I couldn't wait to find out what happened next. I really like the different groups that were introduced separately and brought together, and I'm very intrigued by the back story of the Arkadium. One of the characters mentions the studying he has been doing about the history of the group, and I would love to find out more about that history in the next book - or perhaps as a stand alone book. The only thing that didn't flow for me in the story was the passage of time; it seems as though everything in the book happens in a matter of a week or two and there is a LOT of stuff that happens in that short period of time, I feel like things would maybe move a little slower after a societal breakdown but hey, I've never been a part of one so I could be wrong about that. According to the author's website a novella continuing this story will be released early next year - I can't wait to see what happens next.

Disclaimer: I received a free copy of this book for an honest review.

"It's a good day for the world to end." Krisch starts your heart pumping within two paragraphs of the book starting and keeps it going for the duration of this book. Arkadium Rising is a fast paced apocalyptic / RECENT post apocalyptic book which follows several groups of people including those who have religiously decided to finally take matters into their own hands and bring the world back to the stone age. By reverting the world back to their natural roots, pockets of survivors struggle to survive against miltant groups, each other and those who are still 'cleansing'. Arkadium rising is a story about religious cleansing, human nature in its most basic and ugly form, interpersonal family relationships and survival.

My only complaint about the book, besides some of the technical / scientific plot holes that I can ignore for a literary amusement point of view, is its ending. I know that it is clear that this book is a first in the "My Brother's Keeper" series, but Arkadium rising ended on a fairly large cliffhanger and without wrapping up very many loose ends. That being said, I'm looking forward to reading part 2!

For those on a pre/post/apocalyptic diet, Arkadium rising is not to be left behind.

Arkadium Rising (Brother’s Keeper) by Glen Krisch

I received this book free in exchange of an honest review. Librarything.com is a great way to be introduced to new talent.

And Krisch has talent! Once the characters were introduced, the action took off in such a run-away shock-fest. There are doomsday ideas and then there are the Arkadium, who have been planning for the end of civilization. Ultimately to become one with nature or some such rational.

So for all the years of planning and their explosive burst of their own “come to Jesus” society, they forgot to plan on the evil Power can generate so quickly and fundamentally to the deepest “new religious” core.

Strong characters, fast action, surprises. What’s not to like? Well, waiting for the next installment!

Interesting concept, but dragged too much. Plus, there were just a few things that seemed off, like why a girl he picks up outside of Springfield (must be IL since they are talking of crossing the river into STL) is attending Webster at the KC campus instead of the main one, and other local inconsistencies.

If you want a book where the end of the world as we know it happens, this is the book . Arkadium Rising has everything a great end of the world scenario needs, a hero, his brother who is short a few bricks and a fanatic, danger and lots of destruction.
