Skinwalker Ranch fans, don't Skinwalker Ranch In the Shadow of the Ridge (Amazon) The difference between fiction and reality? Fiction has to make sense. –Tom Clancy I met Riley in a small tavern in Peru. As we were both ex-pats and enjoyed the same libations, we got to talking. One thing led to another and he told me he had a story he thought would make a good book. By this time, he knew that I had written and published a number of titles, primarily as a ghost-writer. Before our conversation started, he asked me if I believed in the paranormal--ghosts and spirits, that kind of thing. I told him I kept an open mind. That's when he told me about his experience on Skinwalker Ranch, the ranch property in Utah believed to be the location of a portal between worlds or into some alternate dimension, depending on your take on these things, and since the subject of a History Channel docu-series. He explained (and I already knew) that the property was purchased by one of the wealthiest men in America, Robert Bigelow, who bought it from a family that had experienced some fantastic encounters with alien entities, unidentifiable anomalies and disembodied voices. What is now general knowledge, Mr. Bigelow hired a team of scientists and security experts to both investigate the alleged paranormal activity and keep the property free of trespassers and thrill seekers. Riley then revealed to me that he was one of those security experts. His story tells of his own personal experiences and encounters, not only while working on the ranch itself, but how the entities he attracted interrupted his life some 500 miles away. The climax of his tale--and he tells it in a way that is so real and genuine that it is hard to deny--is his convincing recollection of having actually passed through the portal and to the other side--the only property guard to report such an encounter. Here for the first time anywhere and in any form is Riley's story. If you have read the other fantastic books written about Skinwalker Ranch, or are interested in the paranormal and the concept of portals, this book is a must read for you. Read and learn what's really out there!
This book was too short; I wanted to hear more of the narrator's experiences while employed as a security guard for the ranch. The story he tells is fascinating and detailed. I'd think it was almost too fascinating; however, I've read extensively about Skinwalker Ranch and there are some compelling similarities between his experience and those of others. Is it real? Who knows...but it's a great read!
Entertaining enough! Wanted to watch the documentary about the ranch but could not get thru it. This was an interesting perspective 2 read considering the narrator was a guard on the property who had no knowledge of what he was getting into.
This book is intriguing enough to keep you turning the pages and the story is interesting enough, if not a little less exciting than I was expecting after reading the original Hunt for the Skinwalker book. It’s supposedly retelling a true story but without spoiling the story, it ends up seeming quite unbelievable as part of it is basically the chilli cook off episode of the Simpsons where Homer trips out in a desert sees a talking coyote (coincidentally the same animal mentioned in the book).
I’d recommend it for anyone who can’t get enough of the Skinwalker Ranch, or anyone interested in light and casual spooky stories, especially about ghosts and spirits.
However, due to many spelling errors (has anyone checked to see if it makes out a hidden message? Seriously there’s a lot), and the fact it is hard to swallow as a “true story” I give it 3/5 stars.
As mentioned in other reviews, a proof reader would have been of service. The story almost reminded me of a high school composition. I do believe in the existence of a spirit world, but sorry, some of this seemed a bit fabricated. It definitely held my interest, and certainty served as a good suspense read, so I give it a three.
The book refers to the Bigelow time at the ranch. It's from a guard's experiences and some of it is 'normal' for the ranch including things like odd lights being seen, a strong sense of dread, portal(s), strange creatures and so on.
There's also the sound of drumming which is not usual as far as I've read. There's also the experience of something evil being near the bed the man was in and this not an unusual occurrence. (It was captured on video.)
There's also batteries dying (usual) and shooting at something strange with no damage to it at all (usual.)
What is very, very unusual is how the guard seems to have ended up in some other kind of reality, a one where he was missing for 80 hours of 'normal' time and the various things that happened to him during that time which were very much extremely strange.
That section alone makes the book worth getting and reading. Very, very unusual and very, very hard to even try to explain.
Seems most likely to be a work of fiction. And not a well written one. In saying that I acknowledge that often the truth is stranger than fiction. The main character has concealed their identity so there would be no way to verify if this person ever stepped foot on the ranch. It seems to me, at least, anyone with knowledge of skinwalker ranch could have written this. But I admit that all I truly know is that I 'know' nothing at all and I could be wrong. But I doubt that I am in this case. Seems made up.
I love the show, Secret of Skinwalker Ranch, so this was a must read. Riley’s story is absolutely insane. We know weird things go on at the ranch, but to hear a first person account of it actually happening, and the consequences back home, make for a wild story. Even if it’s not real, the questions remain of what is happening at the ranch, and why did stuff continue to happen after Riley went home to Las Vegas. A fun read, and a story that will stay with me for awhile
I read this as a paperback book but could not find the edition on Goodreads. The book was interesting. If it is true or not is really up to the reader. I believe one needs a wider view of the universe to absorb and connect with the "speaker" in the book. I personally believe the narrator was trueful as he saw events. The book was readable but not "high literature".
Passed along to my son, as he may find it interesting.
This is my second book about skinwalker ranch. As to whether this one, written by the security employee mirrored what was in the book by the scientist, i would have to admit that both are equally sincere and to the point of being believable. Even if untrue, one hell of a story.
I like the fact that this book was based on true events how true is not up to me to decide. It’s very believable if you’re looking for answers or even better questions This was worth reading. I wish there would’ve been more on what he told the author after the story ended.
I am fascinated with the story of Skinwalker Ranch and other places said to be linked with parallel worlds. I loved the style of the narration in recounting this tale of bizarre, intriguing and even frightening experiences on Skinwalker Ranch in a down-to-earth, humorous, matter-of-fact manner.
Actually had a hard time putting this down. Interesting topic, intriguing story, and well written to express the individual who experienced this’s point of view. Well done!
An incredible story. As a local Utahn, I've been to places similar to the ranch and although I've never experienced anything paranormal, I find it within the realm of possibility and (quite frankly) more implausible that such places wouldn't exist.
I thought this was a nonfictional read. Book was entirely feasible until near the end & then it went a little off. While I’ve read other “ski walker” books I think this went a little overboard. First part of book was great but last part not so much.
I find this book to be an intriguing tale and one to be believed. I personally think there is something strange going on at Skin Walker Ranch and it would be amazing to find out what!!
If you have read anything about Skinwalker Ranch, this should be on that list. I had yet to hear of this encounter. Well written and very believable account of some weirdness on SKinwalker Ranch.
Incredible account of a worker at Skinwalker Ranch in 2009. Wish the book had included map of ranch. Might have helped with description of all the places mentioned in the book. I liked the way it was written and will look for more books by Erick T Rhetts.
Short and fast read but a cool story all the way through ! Makes me jealous to an extent that I’m not the one telling the story ! Then again I also halfway wish I lived on skinwalker ranch. Hahaha
This was interesting enough to keep me reading but it was also slow and a little dull in places. It's still worth reading but the more popular Skinwalker books are better imo
While reading I was visited by the spirit of Carlos Castanada…very similar experience. Overall a phantasmagoric description of an altered state of consciousness. One would think that if these experiences at Skinwalker Ranch are true, why then isn’t every scientist demanding access to say nothing about the general public?
This was a really good book, even though I don't really believe a word of it is true. It was suspenseful, built tension very effectively, kept me turning pages one after another, wanting to know what happened next, and it was very well written in a way that if you could almost believe it.. The author manages to sound very credible, and though I assume he made the whole thing up, , he did an excellent job at telling a great story. There's just enough doubt to leave a lingering bit of wonder in a person's mind, could it have been true?
If a person takes this as science fiction, it's a great read. If one has read somewhat about Djinn, the happenings in this tale of Skinwalkers doesn't contradict either purported phenomenon. So if you're a person interested in stories of Djinn or Skinwalker phenomenon, you'll likely find this book of interest.
I have a bit of a soft spot for the paranormal stuff, and it really doesn't get more paranormal than Skinwalker Ranch. This book was a bit on the short side unfortunately, but contained a pretty engrossing story that fit well in with the existing lore. Would not recommend it unless you've previously read up on the subject, but it does well as a piece in the overall puzzle.
I didn't expect this book to be this good! I started reading it more for fun than as a believable story. But oh my...once I started reading I couldn't put it down!! It really got me thinking that there really must be something at that ranch!! It scared me a bit too.
I bought this book because I am interested in all things Skinwalker Ranch. I found it to be an enjoyable read. Was able to get through it rather quickly as it's not very long. To me, that's a plus. I don't need lots of filler I just want the story. And he gives you quite a story. Haha.
Interesting account of a fascinating experience. Sincerely told without any sad and suspicious attempts at some new age explanation. One of the better more believable tales of the infamous Skinwalker Ranch.
