Den danske forfatter Jørn Riel (f. 1931) debuterede med romantrilogien "Mine fædres hus" (1970-72), men havde inden da rejst rundt i det meste af verden, blandt andet i forbindelse med forskellige erhverv. Jørn Riel var en del af Lauge Koch-ekspeditionenen (1951-53) og var efterfølgende udstationeret i Grønland i 10 år. Imellem 1964-71 arbejdede han hernæst som FN-observatør, før han omlagde sin karrierevej og blev forfatter. Riel har både udgivet store romaner såvel som små novellesamlinger, og i 2010 blev Jørn Riel tildelt Det Danske Akademis Store Pris, der udover hædersbevisningen består af 300.000 kroner.

Karya yang menarik. Aku dapat mengenali cara hidup orang Inuit. Persahabatan, kepercayaan dan 'survivability' ditunjukkan dengan tersusun dan menghiburkan.

terjemahan yang baik oleh Maria Salim. saya suka. jarang saya dapat membaca - lebih-lebih lagi buku kanak-kanak yang diterjemahkan dengan begitu baik dalam bahasa Melayu. gaya bahasanya tidak kekok atau kaku; seperti yang kita sering jumpa dalam karya-karya penerjemahan yang lain.
Selain itu, saya juga sukakan lukisan-lukisan dan gambaran-gambaran yang dibawa Helen Cann. Lukisannya hidup, berwarna-warni, serta mempersonakan. Beliau membawa kepada kita Greenland yang surreal; dengan beruang, rusa, orang Inuit, kapal, bongkah ais, dan laut yang sebiru imaginasi.
saya harap Maria Salim akan lebih giat menerjemah karya-karya sebegini ke dalam bahasa Melayu. Bonne chance!

So I loved this series as a child, but now I have second thoughts about them.
So this one wasn't actually that bad. But I have several questions. Does Liev really never miss his mother or siblings? Could he just forget about them like that? Also I find the message that the Inuit are better than Europeans to be annoying. Neither is "better" than the other, though I may prefer the Europeans, it is just the way I personally feel not because one is superior to the other.
Overall this was okay but not great.

Perkara pertama yang terlintas dalam kepala semasa saya membaca terjemahan novel fiksyen Terdampar (The Shipwreck) adalah animasi Jepun; Attack on Titan, berkenaan suku Inuit yang tinggal di kepulauan Greenland tidak tahu bahawasanya ada manusia lain selain daripada mereka yang tinggal di luar kepulauan tersebut.
Suku Inuit (memang betul wujud) sering kali dimomokkan bahawa makhluk yang tinggal di luar kepulauan Greenland merupakan makhluk jahat yang makan orang, mempunyai rupa pelik, sedangkan makhluk ini sama sahaja dengan suku Inuit iaitu makhluk yang berupa manusia. Yang membezakan adalah warna kulit, rambut, bahasa dan sebagainya.
Jalan cerita yang senang difahami dan mudah untuk dihabiskan dalam tempoh masa yang pendek disebabkan bukunya yang nipis. Terjemahan yang bagus dan ilustrasi berwarna menjadi nilai tambah yang paling mahal dalam naskah ini.

Untuk satu buku pengembaraan singkat, Terdampar memang cukup rasa. Rentaknya laju (dari satu situasi ke situasi yang lain), tapi tersusun. Jorn Riel tidak memanjang-manjangkan cerita halangan yang ditempuhi sepanjang pengembaraan dua adik beradik Apuluk dan Naura, bersama sahabat baru mereka Leiv. Konflik juga merupakan "konflik yang baik", tidak meleret-leret. Buku ini sangat sesuai untuk bacaan kanak-kanak dan awal remaja. Selain pendek (113 mukasurat), buku ini sarat dengan ilustrasi yang menarik menghiasi beberapa muka surat.

I thought this was a great little children's story about Vikings and Inuits, with a good balance between information about the historical setting and the action of the story.

Believe it or not,this book have been in my TBR for several years now ever since i bought it from Kuala Lumpur International Book Fair or we Malaysians commonly called it as PBAKL. I could not believe it that it took me several years to actually started reading this thin but richly illustrated book of only 113 pages!Anyway,the version that i am reading is the translated one, translated into my own national language, Bahasa Malaysia by ITBM or The Malaysian Institute of Translation and Books.
Overall,to me it was a nice and enjoyable story about the adventures and misadventures of an Icelandic boy named Leiv whose boat was shipwrecked due to heavy ice floes while on the way to Greenland from Iceland. Leiv went with a mission of avenging for his father's death but ended up befriending two Inuit siblings, Apuluk and his sister, Narua who rescued him.
To me this story is not only about friendships but more of cultural understandings between two different world/countries (Inuit and the Icelandic or between Natives and White people) and where each finally learned about each other's culture better and with understanding,then comes acceptance and embracing and respecting each others. Each one of them had their own misunderstandings and prejudices towards each other prior their fateful meeting. Leiv's people regarded the Inuits as weak or inferior people and vice versa, the Inuits thought the White people are evil spirits that came to harm them. But after living with the Inuits for years and learning about their culture and lifestyles, Leiv's perceptions changed. He praises and acknowledges the Inuits for being self-sufficient and for having strong survival skills amidst living in a harsh and extreme environment.

Jauh ke pulau terbesar dunia pembaca dibawa; Greenland. Di Greenland yang putih membeku ada sekumpulan manusia yang menggelarkan diri mereka Inuit dan tanah yang mereka duduk sebagai Inuit Nunat atau terjemahannya adalah Bumi Manusia.
Saya jalan-jalan juga di Greenland dibantu peta & foto google, aduh cantik, ringkas, unik & menarik penempatan manusia di sana. Tak pasti sama ada penduduk di Greenland kini adalah penghijrah atau penduduk asli seperti Orang Inuit, tapi pastinya itu bukan gambaran penempatan Narua & Apuluk dalam buku ini kerana mereka adalah puak nomad.
Penceritaan buku yang ringkas, memang sesuai untuk kanak-kanak. Konflik yang dibawa pada awal cerita selesai semudah melerai simpulan tali kasut. Nilai asas yang sangat diperlukan anak-anak; toleransi, setia kawan, rajin usaha dan kerjasama ditulis bersahaja umpama nilai-nilai itulah seharusnya ada bersama manusia sepanjang hidup hingga mati. Dapatan yang paling menarik dalam buku ini semestinya cara hidup Orang Inuit yang sangat dekat dengan alam, alam adalah rumah mereka, taman permainan mereka.
Terakhir sekali, buku terjemahan ITBM memang tak pernah mengecewakan. Lancar dan berkualiti.

J'ai lu une edition très récente. Celle-ci était illustrée par des dessins superbes.
L'histoire du jeune garçon est universelle. Un jeune viking blessé fait la rencontre de jeunes inuits. Ils se lient d'amitié et restent soudés. Le viking prend conscience que les inuits, ces 'être humains' considérés comme peu civilisés, sont autonomes, indépendants et forts. Ils se nourrissent de ce que leur apporte la nature alors que les viking sont dépendants de leur cultures et évélage. Il s'apercoit aussi que le bonheur réside dans la famille, les amités et les choses simples.

Plongés au coeur des règlements de compte familiaux à l'époque de l'Islande vers l'an Mil, on suit les aventures de Leiv, jeune islandais qui s'impose sur un bateau en menaçant de tuer son capitaine, ayant lui-même tué le père de Leiv. Tout est dans le résumé. Cette mise à mort remise à plus tard, Leiv devient suite à un naufrage un jeune Inuit (ceci expliquant le titre du livre) lors de sa rencontre avec Narua et Apuluk, deux frères et sœurs natifs. Jørn Riel a écrit trois livres, mais ceux-ci sont si fins (145 pages environ) qu'un seul aurait suffit, d'autant plus que l'histoire se suit comme si l'on passait d'un chapitre à un autre, si bien qu'ils se lisent tous trois d'une traite. L'avis est donc le même pour les trois : le livre décrit des paysages, un climat et un état d'esprit qui laissent rêver, et qui sont même choquant lorsqu'on les compare au monde fou dans lequel on vit. La simplicité de leur mode de vie nous font réellement se remettre en question quant à la stupidité de nos actes et habitudes.
Le seul bémol de ce livre, surtout pour ceux qui adorent les livres sur les modes de vie dans le grand Nord, est qu'il y a bien trop peu de descriptions à mon goût. En quelques pages seulement, pleins de choses se passent et j'aurais attendu d'un livre sur les Inuit de cette époque beaucoup plus de descriptions de la chasse, des constructions de leurs tentes et igloos, de leurs voyages, des rituels concernant les esprits etc.
Bien sûr toutes ces choses étaient racontées, mais avec trop peu de détails.
Je recommande donc ce livre pour la qualité du récit, mais je ne pense pas le relire, et me tournerait vers des romans plus descriptifs, si toutefois j'en trouve.

Set in Iceland and Greenland circa the year 1000, Leiv is a young Viking from Iceland out to avenge his father’s death. In the process he is shipwrecked on Greenland where his life is saved more than once by an eleven-year-old Inuit girl Narua and her big brother Apuluk. As the three children travel together and learn to communicate, they discover how different their lives and customs are, and we readers learn much about Icelandic and Inuit life and culture. Beautifully written, The Shipwreck is a combination of spare prose and elegant illustrations; highly recommended.

This book is available for independent readers from Barefoot Books. It is not long and it is full of great, realistic adventure. Leif sneaks onto a boat headed for Greenland. A shipwreck brings him into contact with two Inuit children, Narua and Apuluk, who teach Leif about life in their land. My son enjoyed this book. At times, the writing seemed a bit dry. But with polar bear attacks, shipwrecks, and frostbitten toes, there is a lot that appeals to a third-grade boy. He even asked for the next volume. Not sure if that's available yet.

I really enjoyed this story of a young Viking boy who is stranded among the Inuits in Greenland. Originally written in Danish, the English translation is an easy and fast read. It gives a nice peak into both Viking and Inuit cultures and lifestyles. There are some great messages about not judging others by outside appearances and what people truly need to survive. I really enjoyed this story and hope they translate the next three books into English as well.

For some reason, I'm a sucker for books (few as they are) set in Greenland and Iceland. I find the idea that people actually live, hunt, work, etc. in such inhospitable climates fascinating. This glimpse of Icelandic culture was originally published in Danish, years ago, but the English translation flows pretty well and the storyline is captivating. Hopefully looking forward to translation of the next 3 volumes!

J'aime beaucoup Riel. Cette trilogie n'est pas ce que j'ai préféré de cet auteur, mais c'est une belle histoire.
Un beau livre pour ados, d'autant qu'il existe dans une belle version albums illustrés.

This was a beautiful story accompanied by beautiful illustrations. It would be a great read aloud during a myths, fairy tales, and folktales unit. Good story of what makes people a family, with lots of information about life in the arctic.

Vikings! Greenland! Yay! But - it's somewhat ruined by the heavy-handed message of Aren't The Inuit Wonderful Because They Do Not Know War And So We Should Be Just Like Them.
