Will Grohmann (December 4 1887 - May 6 1968) was a German art critic and art historian specialized in German Expressionism and abstract art. He was known as the "godfather of modernism".

Though the text is now older, Grohmann crafted it closer to the time of Klee’s death, so it reads as fresh. He is clearly a passionate observer of the artist and brings much insight, speculation, and connection between the pieces over time. What may to the casual observer look like pictures of patterns, squares, black lines, or even some kind of tribal hieroglyphics, they take on deeper meaning once the text is absorbed and Klee is understood in historical context. The book deepened my understanding and enjoyment of this important artist.
