Ok, anyone who likes STEM and zombies, this novel is for you!
Stuck at the French Synchrotron as a humanity turns into a bunch of spleen eaters, a group of scientists try to survive and maybe even develop a cure for this new plague on humanity.
I enjoyed the story a lot, with its mix of grittiness, dark humour, and how it showcased the characters’ drive to survive and ability to think their way around obstacles. I did hope for a little more from the ending, and at times did get a little overwhelmed with the tech/chemistry bits that were beyond my basic knowledge.
Thank you to NetGalley, the author, and RH Publishing for a copy.
The Synchrotron: The End of the World Has Never Been This Incompetent By Ms. Rain Hunter 394 Pages Star Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Dread Factor: 💀 Trigger Warnings: Gore, zombies (but science-y), pandemic panic, questionable lab ethics, dark humor
What Did I Just Walk Into?
This was supposed to be a Nobel-worthy science experiment. Instead, we get spleen-hungry zombies, an apocalyptic meltdown, and a group of scientists who are one lab mishap away from becoming their own case study. Anna and her squad of highly-educated chaos goblins were just vibing at a fancy synchrotron, minding their palladium, when BAM—science unleashes the apocalypse. As you do.
Here’s What Slapped:
🧪 Science meets satire with absolute precision. If Michael Crichton and Douglas Adams co-wrote a zombie thriller, this would be it.
🧠 Anna is your new favorite scientist-turned-reluctant-action-hero. Smart, sarcastic, and wildly underprepared for the undead.
🧟♂️ These aren’t your average zombies. There’s a cure. There’s moral conflict. There’s a wrench. And there are deeply unhinged “I can fix this” vibes from every character.
🌍 The book doesn’t just give us guts and gore—it gives us a brain. It’s about survival, sacrifice, and whether saving the world is worth it when you’re stuck with these coworkers.
What Could’ve Been Better (But Didn’t Ruin My Day): Expect science jargon, moral crises, and absurdity. If you’re not into your horror served with a beaker full of sarcasm and human error, you might want to sit this one out. But if chaos-core nerd fiction is your thing? Strap in.
Perfect for Readers Who Love: 📖 Apocalyptic horror that’s self-aware 📖 Science gone horrifically wrong 📖 Team disaster dynamics 📖 Zombie stories with heart (and guts—literally) 📖 Scientists who should not be unsupervised
I had such a great time reading The Synchrotron by Rain Hunter. Thank you to NetGalley and the author for an eARC. To me this feels like a fresh take on a zombie apocalypse story. The story focuses on Anna and a small group of scientists working at The Synchrotron when the outbreak happens and follows their efforts to survive and find a cure for the virus turning humans into spleen eating monsters.
The humor is dark, which I found refreshing and entertaining. The characters are fully developed and each brings something special to the story. We’re talking about spleen eating monsters here, so there’s some gore, but nothing over the top. The characters are scientists, so there’s definitely some science in the plot, but I think it was just the right amount.
I can see some readers not being happy with the ending. I liked the way it ended. I can’t go into explaining why without getting into spoilers, but the ending felt right to me.
Synchrotron by Rain Hunter is a dystopian thriller set inside of a gigantic chemical experimentation lab in the south of France.
When a virus wipes out many of the staff in the complex, changing them into spleen-seeking zombies, a group of six scientists must bond together to try to survive and maybe if they’re lucky, find a cure.
It was particularly interesting watching the scientists try to balance ethical and moral dilemmas, as they devised their scientific methodology in their search for a cure.
Although this is admittedly, not my usual genre, I did enjoy this book. It was very fast-paced and the continual action held my interest through to the end.

Zombie Apocalypse and High Energy Physics - sounds like a textbook title, right? Well, it's definitely not: it's the premise of Rain Hunter's sci-fi horror novel "The Synchrotron"! The book is well-worth reading even if you don't like science all that much: it has a strong female lead, a large cast with a diversity of flawed characters, a bit of scientific jargon to make the plot sound believable, and an intricate plotline revolving around the meaning and the value of technological progress - especially when it creates spleen-eating monsters!
The book is great fun and never disappoints - except when it reaches the ending. It's not easy to explain why the book lacks closure - it may be a cliffhanger ending, or the author made the choice to go for an abrupt and ambiguous ending. Either way, it's definitely a bummer, and will probably affect the impact of the book in the long run, if there's no second volume.
That said, this is a thick tome terrifically plotted, with lots of dark humor and several intense moments of claustrophobia and survival guilt. The science feels concretely imagined, the explanations always make sense and are easy to follow, and the main character (who's also the narrator) is the perfect choice to tell this story through! Watch out for some light gore, though.
This book is insane and I loved it, science and zombies!! Firstly the pre-warning about the use of the F-word in this book personally it would have been used a hell of a lot more if I had found myself in the situation the characters do in this book.
Secondly I can’t quite put a genre on this book, it felt like a thriller come horror come sci-fi all in one book but it doesn’t matter what genre it is because it worked so well!
As some with a science background the descriptive detail and attention to detail was great and made it more realistic (what a horrifying thought) working through processes and never ending failures whilst trying to find a cure to the situation terrorising the world.
I think I hit most emotions in this book, it was a wild rollercoaster of a ride, laughter, sadness, stress for the characters, geeking out at the science and the small sense that given the madness in the world today I’m not sure I would be surprised if there was an outbreak of a virus causing people to become spleen eating zombies….
I loved the characters in this book all unique in their own way, not all bringing use to the party at all times. There is some kick arse women, so people that you like then hate and then there is Greg. Greg oh Greg what a T**T is all I can say about him.
If you like STEM, zombies, fast paced chaos or just a good storyline then read this book. I am hoping there is more to come!
The Synchrotron is a fast paced zombie apocalypse thriller with a great contemporary Sci-fi feel.
In the European Synchrotron, a group of scientists are trapped in the middle of a world altering disaster following the spreading of a virus that has turned the majority of the population into zombies who are hungry for spleens. So now, instead of taking part in a potential Nobel prize winning experiment, the scientists must place all their attention on formulating a cure for the virus.
But can they do it? Be sure to pick your copy up to find out.
So all in all, what a great read.
I must say, I'm not usually a Zombie novel type of reader, but i'm s glad I gave this a go as it was just brilliant.
It felt fresh and new in a world pretty much saturated with Zombie novels and films. But this felt different.
There's humour, some sadness and lots of really interesting science.
The characters are believable and feel real, the storyline is smart and clever, and will hold your attention to the final page.
For my full sensory review please visit my blog. As someone who enjoys true facts and figures, I enjoyed the accurate scientific parts which given the authors background does make sense. I found the narrative kept up its pace and the adventure is great. I found the science parts were written and explained well. I actually did not know that The Synchrotron is in fact a real place and I absolutely love books based on real places or events. You can get the real feel for the story.
The European Synchrotron is explained on the second page after the authors bio, these extra detail held me immensely to enjoy the book more. I was intrigued from the start.
I would have certainly loved this as a teen myself and I hope my kids do. This book is a keeper on our shelves and I highly recommend.
I was instantly hooked into The Synchrotron by Rain Hunter. The reference to one of my favourite Stephen King book made it even better! This thrilling sci-fi novel combines cutting-edge science with a gripping "zombie" apocalypse plot, featuring a unique twist: the infected devour spleens. Anna and her team of scientists are relatable, making it easy to root for them. The story is gripping, with an intense tension that kept me on the edge of my seat. I loved how the fast-paced narrative brought the science to life, I didn't want it to end! I need more! This book was thrilling page-turner that exceeded my expectations. I would highly recommend this book for fans of sci-fi!
Oh this book was simply brilliant, it was a roller coaster ride of a story with a mixture of science, horror and adrenaline following a group of scientists who find themselves fighting for whats left of humanity against a horde of zombies and a deadly virus. Running out of time, Anna and her friends faced the impossible choices between life and death, morality and cure. When the future of the world is at stake it makes you question, what are you willing to sacrifice along the way? I love books that make you question what would you do in a similar situation? I also agree with the dedication in the fact that in know way is 53 times enough uses of the f word when you are fighting for your life and the world as we know it.
A zombie apocalypse with a difference!! These zombies are spleen eating monsters and the world’s hope for a cure lies with a diverse cast of extremely flawed characters who face numerous personal and ethical dilemmas along the way.
There is a bit of science jargon but it felt right in the context it was used. It is nicely balanced with some fantastic dark humour and a little bit of gore.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book until the ending which was so disappointing. Is there going to be a sequel. So many things felt unfinished.
Overall a fantastic debut and a very entertaining take on a zombie apocalypse.
Thanks you to Love Books Tours and the author for the free review copy.
This book was intense in parts, humorous, and very different from other 'zombie' type books, although still gory. It's a dystopian, end of the world book with a virus that has turned some humans into spleen eating monsters and features a bunch of chemists trying to find a cure. I really enjoyed it and thought it was a great book. I liked the characters and felt connected to them and willed them all on to survive the monsters. I felt for Anna the most, I think, because of her relationship with the other members of ID26 and Steve. Even though it was the end of the world, they still had electricity, the Internet, and WhatsApp, so they could keep in touch with loved ones. I didn't like the fact it ended on a cliffhanger as now I need to know what happens!!
The Synchrotron by Rain Hunter I really did enjoy this book. I loved the cover and blurb of this book. The cover is simple. I got into it straight away. I love zombie books. I loved the writing style and the story. The only down thing for me was the techy speaking and chemistry bit. Otherwise, I loved it. I did like Anna, Louise, Tanya, Edsie, Dan, and Max. I was surprised by how it ended. I hope there is more to come.
I received this book as an arc, thank you for giving me the chance to read it! This book is not what I normally read, but I am very glad I took a chance and read it. It follows 6 scientist who are trying to survive a deadly zombie like virus. Their main goal is to try to find a cure. This book did have a lot of science in it, but it was worded and explained in a way that even I could follow along. And I do not know much about chemistry. I enjoyed the dynamic between all the characters, how they were all sooooo different but found a way to get along and work together. Oh, the ending!!!!!!!!!! Like- that was a good cliffhanger. I cannot wait to see what book reveals.
I really enjoyed this book. The story was excellent and moved at a good pace. It is a totally different take on the genre. Absolutely loved it. Definitely recommend.

Rain Hunter’s The Synchrotron is a masterfully told, inventive tale of the world’s end, not with a bang, nor slowly, but a “sizzle” that turns humans into the infected. Through the eyes of Anna, a visiting chemist at the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF) in Grenoble, France, the reader experiences the apocalypse, because Kay, a cross-wielding-and-God-calling optimist, insists her colleague record what happened and what they did.
The unlikely heroes of Team ID26, a motley crew of doctoral recipients and technicians focused on winning Nobel Prizes in material sciences, not making a cure, are ill-prepared to save the world. When their advanced research facility collapses into ruin, they have to adapt, or turn into spleen-eaters, identifiable by their milky white eyes and voracious appetite for the human spleen. The facility, authentically captured in a Dan Brown-esque style, becomes a Stephen King-level horror show, where a spray bottle (full of acid) and a wrench (meant for opening liquid nitrogen cylinders) are your best tools to stay alive in Anna’s harrowing “don’t-get-bitten-or-scratched” life.
With unforgettable characters, the Synchrotron showcases Rain’s exceptional ability to weave a horror story punctuated by relatable moments of comedy and drama between hard-hitting chills. The characters grapple with impossible choices, constantly choosing between death, morality, and faith, in their desperate search for a cure. Their realistic interactions pull the reader into their horrendous world of painful decisions and heart-wrenching consequences.
From start to finish, the story is a front-row roller coaster ride. Each twist, sharp turn, short lull, and sudden drop keeps you on the edge, eagerly anticipating what happens next. This is undoubtedly a great read, featuring genuine characters, a fascinating plot, and nail-biting action that fully invests you in the group’s goal to save humanity.
🧪 The Synchrotron by Rain Hunter – A Smart, Darkly Funny Zombie Thriller With Real Science What happens when the apocalypse begins in a particle accelerator? Rain Hunter's The Synchrotron is a bold, genre-bending novel that blends real-life science, dark humour, and a race-against-time thriller in a way that feels refreshingly original.
Set inside a European synchrotron—a massive research facility where cutting-edge X-ray experiments take place—this story doesn’t start with a bang, but with Team ID26 calmly working on palladium samples. Until a strange virus emerges. One that turns people into grotesque, spleen-hungry zombies. But here's the twist: these zombies might be curable.
At the heart of this virus-fueled chaos is Anna, a brilliant yet emotionally guarded scientist whose team must figure out the origin and potential cure of the infection—all while navigating dwindling food supplies, growing paranoia, and ethical dilemmas. This isn’t just about survival; it’s about science as hope, and humanity in crisis.
Hunter, doesn’t just slap scientific jargon on top of a zombie narrative. The science feels authentic, even poetic. Readers who loved the scientific realism of The Martian or the witty ensemble chaos of Station Eleven will find this book thrilling and strangely relatable.
🌟 What Makes The Synchrotron Stand Out: 🔬 Smart Science: It's not technobabble—it's immersive, accurate, and essential to the plot.
🧟♂️ Fresh Take on Zombies: Forget mindless gore. These zombies are a metaphor and a mystery.
🤯 Dark Humor: Think sardonic British wit under pressure. Hilarious and horrifying at once.
👥 Real Characters: Flawed, brilliant, anxious, sarcastic—like real people stuck in a bad situation.
Final Verdict: The Synchrotron is one of 2025’s most original post-apocalyptic thrillers. It’s got brains—both figuratively and literally. If you’re tired of formulaic zombie stories and crave intelligent, fast-paced fiction, this is your next read.
First off I would like to thank @rain.hunter and @lbt for giving me this opportunity to host my first tour stop ever and for gifting me this book for free in exchange for a review !
In this book you will be thrust into a post apocalyptic lab. With everyone outside their locked bubble infected they only have each other. Our main character… is a scientist who tasks herself and her fellow scientists with finding the cure to the virus outbreak. In order to do this they will all need to put any differences or grudges they may have aside and put their heads together. They will have to face their co worker zombies and make sacrifices of themselves where necessary. Is it possible ? Can they work together ? Can they really save humankind before it’s too late ?

🧬 The Synchrotron is a chaotic, clever, and darkly hilarious take on the end of the world. What begins as a routine high-tech experiment quickly nosedives into madness when six scientists accidentally unleash a virus that turns people into spleen-hungry zombies. 🧟♀️🔬💥 The world may be ending, but Team ID26 is more worried about lab results, Nobel Prizes, and keeping their limbs attached — barely.
Despite the doom and gloom, the book is packed with wit, sarcasm, and a lot of heart. 💡🧪 The scientists are not your usual action heroes — they’re quirky, brilliant, and wildly unprepared — but that’s what makes their journey so entertaining. From accidental breakthroughs to bizarre ethical dilemmas, their fight to save humanity is both absurd and gripping. 🧠⚗️
Rain Hunter blends satire and sci-fi in a way that feels fresh and unpredictable. 😅🛠️ As Anna and her crew attempt to reverse the zombie curse, they’re forced to question everything — from scientific responsibility to personal sacrifice. The stakes are sky-high, the mistakes are hilarious, and the commentary on ambition and failure is surprisingly deep. 🧫🚨
By the explosive finale, you’ll be laughing, cringing, and oddly inspired. 😳📉❤️ The Synchrotron is a must-read for anyone who enjoys end-of-the-world stories with brains — and not just the kind zombies eat. It’s messy, brilliant, and unapologetically weird in the best possible way. 🧟♂️🥼
Thank you for sending such an incredible book to me. From start to finish I was amazed by the world of Scientists 👩🏽🔬
This story focuses on a character called Ana and a very small group of scientists working. The scientists are working at The Synchrotron when the outbreak happens and this book follows their efforts to survive. They focus on finding a cure for the virus turning humans into spleen eating monsters.
What is the price of saving the world? This is the key question
This book is full of adventure and fun. It is fast paced but allows you to create a connection with each character. This helped the story to flow so well and I had the ability to understand the characters more deeply.
This story focuses on elements of friendship, the inner worlds of the characters and what it means to be a true scientist. I love taking part in STEMs as a primary teacher so this was right up my street.
This story included a 5* story line. The characters are scientists. What more could you ask for?
If you are searching for a book that is fast paced and will bring science to life … this is the one for you.
Thanks to Booksirens and Rain Hunter for a copy of this arc
Steve sucks all my friends hate steve. For me the highlight of this book was Steve and just how careless someone can be while still fitting into that hero archetype and was a nice subverting of classic tropes
Heres the thing about this book. I think to enjoy it the humor has to hit. It absolutely did not hit for me. If you like this type of humor maybe you’ll like it more than i did.
The other thing about this book is it gets real weird about China about 50 % in including a character asking if the virus in the book maybe is from eating bats, and casual uses of slurs for Chinese people. It was uncomfortable to read especially with the comparisons to covid
I can’t say I’d recommend this book to people even though its not the worst thing I’ve ever read I just found that section to be wildly off putting.
If you read this and did like it id say check out bat eater and other names for cora zeng for perspective on how this handling was concerning and the girl with all the gifts for a somewhat similar story.
The world has ended, zombies have taken over, and a group of scientists have decided to save the world- what would be better? I can tell you- this book!
The Synchrotron is equal parts zombie book, sci-fi, and pop culture references (hello, Armageddon!). On top of all of it, it has heart in the most unexpected ways. I really didn't think that I would be understanding characters through the morality and social justice that this book delivers.
Rain Hunter handles the entire book with such ease. The characters are highly relatable, even at their worst. Rain's writing is really easy to settle with- think cozy sci-fi horror here. The book is heavy on the science, which I really appreciated. It was really nice to see that the science scienced in the very best ways, even when the characters had to make the worst decisions.
Overall, this book feels like it was written for me. Altogether, it was a little nerdy, a little dark, and a little weird in all the very best ways.
This is one of the rare books that I read by postponing my sleep. The language was so lucid that I didn't realize how quickly I was turning the pages. If you're a fan of science, sci-fi, mystery, and all this stuff related to what scientists do (to put in simpler words), apocalypse situation, then this book is for you. I absolutely loved the characterization and the plot, and I could picturize every scene in the book. I promise this won't let you down.
