Sixteen-year-old Cassi Dyson thought she had a normal life—until the day her world shattered. In a sudden, terrifying moment, two men seize her father right in front of her. Before they drag him away, he shouts a coded message to her—the warning changes everything. Soon after, a dimensional fracture scatters Cassi—and all of Earth’s citizens—across dimensions.

Separated from her family, Cassi awakens alone in Cimerrion, a world where the government sees her as a threat, where every move is watched, and any misstep could mean capture—or worse. Not knowing who to trust, she adopts a new name—Callasandra—but even that may not be enough to keep her safe. Assigned to The Camp, a monitored sector where sixteen-year-olds are trained, Cassi must blend in to survive.

When Joren, a charismatic and quick-witted fellow student, sees through her disguise, he brings her to the covert resistance known as the Antistasi. Desperate to find her family, Cassi turns to them for help and learns that survival means more than just concealing her identity—it means playing a dangerous game where trust is scarce, deception is everywhere, and escape may not be an option.

Callasandra Fractured by Stephanie Douglas is a dystopian, science fiction novel about a young girl traveling through dimensions. It slowly drew me in, picking up the pace as the story unfolded.

Cassi had been jolted awake by what sounded like a burst of thunder – the hair on her arms stood on end, and in her gut, she knew something was wrong.

That’s putting it mildly. She finds herself in a world called Cimerrion, where every move is watched. When rules are broken, ‘motivation’ is used. It depends on who is doling it as to how brutal it can be. At least, for a moment, she is protected from grave bodily harm. They want her unmarked until they decide what they are going to use her for, but there is one guard who has his eye on her and believes she may be a Disunited, a person from another world. If they knew she was also a twin, they may have been even more worried. There is a prophecy…Our control of Cimerrion hangs in the balance of the twin fates of our destiny.

The main characters are young and I love watching them grow and develop, working together. Knowing they can’t just sit there and do nothing, they become a part of the resistance and risk their lives to save those targeted for a life of slavery.

Stephanie Douglas has created a world of danger, but no matter how bleak things look, the characters still have hope. The pace increases as does the suspense, the closer we get to the end…and that ending. It’s a good one. I am looking forward to what comes next.

Also, for a unique reading experience, Stephanie has sprinkled QR codes for music so you can listen along with the characters. I did not choose the option, but it may enhance your reading experience.

My thanks go out to Stephanie Douglas for the opportunity to read and review Callasandra Fractured.

Callasandra Fractured was a story that instantly grabbed my attention, promising many things that I adore. As someone who is always eager for new science-fiction reads, I was especially eager to jump into a new world. While I can certainly see many people enjoying this story, it did not quite hit me in the way I had hoped.

I will be honest and say that I was a bit confused at the start of the story, and it did take a while before the pieces started to fall into place. This reflected the character’s experience well, but it did make it a little harder than I would have liked for me to be sucked into the story. I think this largely comes down to one thing for me – I wanted much more understanding of the science-fiction side of the story, and I was searching for this. My favourite thing about science-fiction is watching how all these pieces come together, how authors merge fact and fiction together into something believable and immersive. For me, there was never enough exploration of this element. This is very much a personal thing, however, and I am sure many will be deeply invested in the story and overlook this. After all, the story does offer a unique experience with the inclusion of QR codes to scan for a musical addition to the story. It certainly adds something extra to make it stand out, and I can see this working for many.

All in all, I can certainly see Callasandra Fractured being a hit for many. In the end, however, I think this story was a little more juvenile than I had initially anticipated and it left me wanting more from the science elements than was given. This is not a bad thing, it just means I was not quite the right reader for the story.

I won this book in a giveaway and after reading it in 2.5 days can say without a doubt that I am SO SAD THIS BOOK IS NOT MORE POPULAR. I am going to recommend it to all of my friends. A dystopian thriller that involves quantum physics??? Sign me the hell up. I also really loved the touch in the kindle version of the book with the interactive music experience. There was so much thought placed into this book. It also tackles some very important issues that are (especially) hot topics currently: human trafficking. Please please please pick it up and read it!!

I totally recommend this book to lovers of young adult fiction with science fiction tropes like alternate worlds and to lovers of dystopian books.
The prose in general is vivid and detailed; and it feels even more evident such as in scenes talking about makeup. The characters are all well-drawn as well, though many don't get enough attention. The female protagonist slowly gains strength, and that's always a good reading experience. Calling devices of punishment and humiliation ‘motivation’ tools was a nice touch. I also confess to hating some of the characters (particularly that Leonard; I could totally see myself motivating him!), and that is always a golden star for the book.

But I do think Callasandra Fractured by Stephanie Douglas is the sort of novel that should come with a trigger warning for scenes of torture. While I am being sincere about the need for a trigger warning, it is also a compliment to the prose as the author does a really good job of drawing vivid scenes of dystopian world.

This is a YA young adult science fiction novel that follows the life of a sixteen-year-old girl, Cassi Dyson. Her life starts taking strange turns after some strange men seize her father. Soon, she finds herself in an alternate dimension where she is separated from her family, and she ends up in a strange camp meant to train young adults like her. Reading about the role of entertainers in the alternate world somewhat later reminded me a little of the Hunger Games trilogy.

While there are some science fiction themes, there isn't much science in it. I think the thing that readers are more likely to remember about the book are the scenes of torture. I personally don't mind it, but it might be triggering for some. And they are feel even more disturbing as the torture, humiliation, and violence are being done to teenagers. Further, many scenes have them more or less naked.

“It’s time for you to disrobe and go to the Motivation Wall,” Sergeant Leonard commanded, his voice cold and detached as he turned away, rifling through a folder. Cassi hesitated, her stomach clenching at the thought of undressing in front of him. She remembered Raina’s desperate pleas and the traumatic and humiliating outcome. Cassi also knew firsthand what Sergeant Leonard could be like. Her own futile attempt to stand up to him had nearly cost her her life. If it were not for Lieutenant Sands, she might not have survived, and she doubted he would be rescuing her today. As she battled internally, Cassi caught Sergeant Leonard’s impatient glance from the corner of her eye. Summoning every ounce of courage, she took a deep breath, held it for a moment, and slowly began to remove her clothes—each piece feeling like a layer of protection being stripped away. Remembering that Raina had remained in her bra and underwear, she opted to do the same.”
Mostly though, it is a well-written book and I enjoyed reading it.

I enjoy reading science fiction books that blend multiverse or parallel dimension concepts, and Callasandra Fractured by Stephanie Douglas turned out to be a YA sci-fi dystopian thriller that delivered just that. It follows Cassi’s journey into another dimension, in a country called Cimerrion—governed by strict rules and constant monitoring that control individuals’ behavior and choices. The world-building reminded me of 1984 by George Orwell, mixed with the glamor and spectacle of The Hunger Games: Catching Fire. This blend works exceptionally well, especially when the author introduces themes of power, leadership, and a highly controlled economy.

The story begins at a fast pace, especially in the first few chapters. Though the narrative slows slightly later, the intense psychological tension makes up for it. The transformation of Cassandra into Callasandra—to blend in and avoid being identified as a “Disunited”—adds depth and suspense. The plot takes an unexpected and darker turn when the illusion of glamor fades, and the brutal reality of being an “entertainer” is revealed. Cassi must then fight to find her way back to her family before time runs out.

Characters like Marissa and Joren serve as Cassi’s emotional backbone, while the sadistic Sergeant Leonard adds a horrifying layer of tension that lingers throughout the book.

What stood out most for me was the unique integration of music into the story. The author collaborated with various artists to produce exclusive tracks, accessible through QR codes in the book. This was my first time experiencing something like this, and it truly elevated the reading experience—almost cinematic in nature.

One drawback, however, is the lack of scientific explanation, which is notable for a science fiction novel. For instance, Cassi’s shift from one dimension to another is vague and underdeveloped. It’s possible the author is saving those details for the sequel, especially since the book ends on a cliffhanger, leaving several questions unanswered. Also, I found Cassi’s character a bit weak and overly dependent on others. Aside from her efforts to adapt to Cimerrion’s rules for survival, her personal growth felt limited.

Overall, I appreciated the world-building and immersive storytelling, and I would definitely recommend Callasandra Fractured to fans of 1984 or The Hunger Games.

Welcome to the Lit-indie Files. Where I take a chance on small/indie published books and bring you the inside scoop!! - Dream Lair Books

I just finished Callasandra Fractured by Stephanie Douglas, a debut novel, and here are my thoughts.

When her dad was kidnapped right in front of her, Cassi didn’t expect the coded message out of his mouth would change her life forever. The warning scatters all of earth’s citizens across other dimensions.

Cassi wakes up in Cimerrion, a terrible place where everyone is under scrutiny, she's never felt more alone. Learning she has to conceal her identity the resistance realizes who she is… and what they need to do to help her survive.

Firstly… The ending? WHAT!! Is that it? Will there be a sequel? I have a million questions and a quiet fear that they won’t be answered. I do not like ambiguous endings and I really don’t like cliffhangers.

And how genius were the QR codes for the music? I’ve never done that before and I was excited every time I saw one on the page. You don’t have to do it but the Soundtrack-enhanced fiction writing might just be my latest obsession. I thought the writing was expressive and clever.

Cassi has to change her name and mixes her own name with the one she should have used and Callasandra is born. I enjoyed all the characters and they were well defined and relatable. I think the character development was probably the win with this book. I did find Cassi a tad underdeveloped in spots but I have a soft spot for her.

I have some things I don't think are great… This is a sci-fi dystopian novel. Cool but it was so vague on how the big sci-fi event even happened and why the dad was taken. Sci-fi needs the who, what, when, why, how circle to be complete and this didn’t happen for me and that did not sit well with me at all. Even if the next book explains it, there was not enough meat here for anyone who likes sci-fi to want to pick up book 2. There needed to be a taste.

I did read it in one sitting because I was invested in knowing more and hoping Cassi made it back to her mom and twin.

3.75 stars and if there is a book 2, I will pick it up.

Thank you for giving me the opportunity to read your book. I was thoroughly charmed.

A suspenseful, haunting story of survival.

If you are a fan of The Hunger Games, Red Sparrow, or Divergent, then you are going to love Callasandra Fractured. Cassi, a young teenage girl goes through such an amazing journey facing countless life threatening obstacles, simply trying to get back to her family. A cautionary coming of age tale that sucks you into the story from the first paragraph. I couldn't put it down! This story has so many correlations to the our own US political struggle with the truth, tolerance, the power of celebrity and political corruption.
The addition of music using QR codes is truly inspired! I found the music not only enhanced the reading experienced, but brought a whole other element of storytelling as the music performance itself is a tool used by the characters to communicate, spy and hide. The soundtrack is hauntingly beautiful and truly sets a mood each time it is used. I look forward to the next book and hope there is even more music!
In the year of the woman, during a stormy US political climate, Cassi and her friends are hope for a better future where empowered young women and men truly can make the world a better place! This is a story I would love to see as a film!
So....when is the next book coming out? That was quite a cliffhanger Ms. Douglas that I didn't see coming!

Callasandra Fractured by Stephanie Douglas
When I was invited to read this book, I hesitated at first. I am not a fantasy girlie. I prefer thrillers. I enjoy the pulse-pounding terror of devious plots and wicked characters. However, this story grabbed my attention with Stephanie’s ease of writing.

The musical elements that accompany this book were brilliant. I’ve had authors release the “soundtrack” they wrote the book to, but I’ve never experienced curated songs specifically written and scored for a novel. It added the most intimate, poignant depths to the storyline.

The musical elements will capture readers and bring a new experience to the reading journey. I was very impressed.

I got sucked into this storyline. The way things went from scary to deadly, to twisted and deceitful was brutal. The way a supposedly glamorous career role was making something so dirty was well done.

I love how Douglas incorporates relevant themes within her story, without making it “blatantly political”. She did make it powerful, and I applaud her talents. This well-written, musically crafted story will grab readers and pull them into worlds they could never imagine.

A haunting, beautifully fractured journey into identity and survival.

Callasandra Fractured pulled me in from page one with its lyrical prose and raw emotional depth. Stephanie Douglas masterfully weaves together themes of trauma, resilience, and the fragility of memory. The protagonist’s fractured sense of self mirrors the story’s shifting realities, creating a dreamlike tension that’s both unsettling and captivating.

If you enjoy thought-provoking stories that blend inner turmoil with elements of psychological suspense and speculative fiction, this one’s a must-read. A powerful, immersive experience that lingers long after the last page.

I LOVED this book – I read it twice! It’s a fast paced dystopian thriller that will make your heart race. I got sucked into the story immediately and lost track of time! The characters are fascinating - some are disturbing, some are inspiring - and the story is rich with intrigue and nail-biting/breath holding moments. It was very difficult to stop reading! I highly recommend it to anyone that loves riveting dystopian fiction. Also - the MUSIC was such an innovative idea! I like that it was optional (it doesn't automatically play, you scan a QR code) but it seriously added a whole new layer to the reading experience. It’s not an audible book, it’s music that is described as happening in the story that you can listen to as well. It really felt like I was IN the story, listening to the music along with the characters. And it really created an ambiance and a feel to those scenes. I’ve never even heard of such a thing before. Brilliant!
