Black Powder and Brimstone is a Mork Borg inspired (and compatible) ttrpg of brutal holy war, folk horror, demons, and mercenary flintlock fantasy adventure.

As expected from its Mork Borg inspiration, this game is brutal, violent, dark, and fun as hell. The art is awesome, and the layout is quite noticeably much easier to parse than Mork Borg. The world history and lore are rife with conflict, dark magic, and story ideas. The rules are light and the flavor heavy.

The main focus is building your pc group as a mercenary band, with rules for different levels of growth in that sense, but you can do whatever you want and ignore that and adventure as you see fit.

Black powder and magic rules feel unique to this game and can be both rewarding and devastating in equal measure.

There are rules I like tons, such as The Devils Luck, which can tip the hand of fate a bit in the player's favor, but for a price.

Also, even though it's brutal, it's also a tad bit more forgiving than standard Mork Borg (although not by a lot), which makes it good for longer campaigns instead of just one shots.

The world is rich enough to reward survival, so a longer campaign in it would be a blast. Character progression also adds some nice power and mechanical advantages to pcs that survive, which also makes for fun longer campaigns.

Still, it also works great for oneshots.

I really loved this book and am super excited in bringing it to the table to see what violent shenanigans we get up to.

I also hope Benjamin Tobitt publishes more books in this world.

This is a bad iteration of Mork Borg.

The edition is full of errors from what appears to be a complete lack of editing. Inconsistencies and errors are common in many TRPGs, as they're often a community or passion project-driven item, but there was somehow nothing done about issues identified during the Kickstarter.

The worldbuilding is, and I thought very hard to find the most respectful way to say this, very elementary. I'm not even joking, you are better off making up a generic dark fantasy setting and using the core Mork Borg rules. There are usable things within the book, but nothing worth the cost of the printing. MB is a great community and most of this is already online for free anyways. I love having physical reference material, and I was so upset to have this fall completely short of my expectations.

Save yourself the money and invest in any other book.
