WAKING FOREVER (BOOK ONE)
Sara Glass, a successful thirty-five year old lawyer in San Antonio, leads a comfortable life. Then a near fatal encounter changes all of that, restoring vitality to Sara's life. Rachel Collins, a charming but reserved art dealer, saves Sara from a violent attack and their subsequent friendship quickly heats up. But Rachel has a secret and when her past threatens Sara, the two women explore a dark world Sara never knew existed—a world that will challenge her very notions of life, love, and death.

BECOMING FOREVER (BOOK TWO)
Homicide detective Ash Haines is not fazed by violence, but the brutal murder of a man covered in bite marks sends her spiraling into an unfamiliar world filled with danger and intrigue. The investigation leaves Ash more and more baffled, challenging her perceptions of reality while sending her into the path of Dr. Emma Atman, the beautiful Medical Examiner assigned to the case who has secrets of her own. As Ash digs deeper into the case, she becomes entangled in a violent and unforgiving underworld, forcing her to adapt or die.

DYING FOREVER (BOOK THREE)
As a down-to-earth professor of American folklore, Alison Bailey teaches her students that legends are a function of cultural memory, based in collective fantasy and fear. Her reality is demolished in a single moment of terror, replaced with a world of shadows and horrors as she discovers the folklore she teaches is based in truth. Now she is forced to rediscover the world with Bryce Whelan, the alluring stranger who has a bigger secret than Alison could ever imagine. As their feelings for each other grow, so does the danger they must face together. Now Bryce and Alison must mend relationships and form new alliances to face a most formidable foe.

They say it's good to try new things and I am so, so glad I put aside my 'I don't like fantasy' bias to give this series a go. I'm reviewing as a whole because after reading book one (or, truth be told, after getting a third of the way through book 1) I knew that I would have to read the rest.

I found the 'urban fantasy' setting of the series -- ie that some of the characters had paranormal abilities but that the setting was urban, famililar and recognisable (no surprises) meant that the 'fantasy' aspects could add interest than be a distraction. With so many other, more overt, fantasy novels / movies etc I find the constant thought of 'yeah but is that what it seems' to be distracting. In this novel I knew that I could trust the environment not to change (and even the characters with paranormal abilities were pretty obvious to the reader, even if hidden from other players in the book) and so I could relax into it.

Each book follows a similar-ish formula but I found them different enough that they didn't get boring in this regard. The main protagnoists are engaging (Bryce annoyed me a bit in book three but not so much that I didn't enjoy the book) and I particularly likely the various ways they found to overcome the obstacles standing in the way of a happy 'forever' after.

Book 1: 4.0 Absorbing introduction to the series and I really liked both Sara and Rachel as a couple.

Book 2: 4.5 I found the most enjoyable of the series -- the setting was familiar so we could jump into the action a bit faster. I found Emma and Ash the most engaging as our leading protagonists and, without giving too much away, particularly enjoyed the outcome for Ash -- it seemed very fitting with her forthright personality and found it reather easy to visualise what said outcome would do for what was already described as a very attractive body. *fans self*

Book 3: 3.75 Definitely the weakest of the three for mine. I didn't really connect with Bryce's character and I found it harder to believe the chemistry/attraction between her and Alison as much as I did Sara/Rachel or Emma/Ash. This book was also more action focussed than the other two and, as I'm reading these books more of action than romance (while appreciating the need to keep things moving) I found it a bit hard to connect.

The books could do with some tighter editing: I got sick of reading variations of character x 'chewing their lip nervously' -- brand names are dropped everywhere and a characters appearance (clothes wise) almost always described even when neither of these advance the plot in any way -- and there are a few typos etc. For a less engaging book, these may have been deal-breakers but, as it is, they were minor irritations to an otherwise very engaging, very enjoyable read.

If you're looking for something a little different from the standard lesrom faire, then I'd definitely encourage you to give this series a go -- even if, like me, you're not usually a paranormal / fantasy fan.
